Description of activities and learning

[edit]

Each of the programmes have their objectives (listed on grant page). This section will describe how the activities during the second quarter lead contributed towards their fulfillment.

Educational Programme

[edit]

Educational Program

Goals met by this activity

The goals of the education program is to expand the knowledge and inform larger share of the population about Wikipedia and all Wikimedia projects. Moreover, another goal which is primary in the educational program in schools and educational institutions is Wikipedia to be used as a tool and referent source of information but in the same time participants of the program to improve and contribute with the adding and improving content. This quarter with the beginning of the new 2018/2019 school year we have expanded the education program to tw0 levels: 1) activities such as editing classes with training carried out in three schools: Josip Broz - Tito Grammar School, "Krume Kepeski" primary school and another new primary school "Goce Delchev" in the town of Negotino in south-central part of Macedonia; 2) editing competition started since 15th of November in "Josip Broz Tito" High school

Some considerations

Considering the beginning of the new school year and the successful introduction of the educational program in another new primary school the overall results, outcome and metrics of the Education Program in this quarter show very significant increase and success of 102 participants out of which 95 students participated on organized editing classes with 266 newly created and 2 improved articles out of which 140 newly created during the editing class activities with content provided from the respective learning and teaching materials

Wikipedia lectures and training

Goals met by this activity

The main goal to expand the knowledge and inform larger share of the population about Wikipedia and all Wikimedia projects we decided to accomplish with lectures and training provided to specific interested groups and institutions. Thus, Wikipedia is introduced and used to a group bounded by common interest which in the same time contribute by providing content and information from their field of interest and specialization. This quarter training and lectures about Wikipedia were organized in 3 different institutions, in National and University Library "St. Clement of Ohrid", "Pedala" social center and with children at social risk at their house shelter.

Some considerations

Considering the growing interest for using and editing on Wikipedia in general public and especially in these institutions especially at National and University Library "St. Clement of Ohrid" by their users and employees we have organized two training events there and two more training each in "Pedala" social center and in house shelter for the children in social risk with total number of 20 participants who have contributed by creating 24 new and improving 4 exiting articles.

Wikiexpeditions

Goals met by this activity

Our Wikiexpeditions regularly visit different regions of Macedonia with a daily plan, photographing villages and towns, their houses, landmarks, important places, museums, and monuments. Many images are taken, and most of them are used in articles that are created or greatly improved by the knowledge gained on the expeditions and subsequent material researched to provide substance to the articles about the places or landmarks. The expedition reports, as well as articles on various settlements and their monuments and heritage are then shared on our special Facebook group dedicated to the Wikiexpeditions as well as our mk.wiki group page which provides greater outreach to the public.

Some considerations

In this last quarter two Wikiexpeditions have been organized by which the goal set for six Wikiexpedition to be organized in the year was accomplished. As it was case in all the Wikiexpeditions previously in this year on the Wikiexpedition to Kopačka another new volunteering member has joined the team which made this year the biggest growth of new participants included in the project.

Geoexpeditions

Goals met by this activity

By this activity we aimed to discover as much as possible unknown or less known geographical locations and features in Macedonia on remote places with difficult access. The fourth geoexpedtiion aimed for speleological exploration in Poreče continued in this quarter as well as with several field trips which were realized with aim to cover other caves and caverns in the surrounding areas of western Macedonia and smaller mountain areas in eastern and western Macedonia.

Some considerations

The team included highly skilled and educated members who are working as teachers, one of which is newly registered and another contributing member involved in the educational program thus improving the connection of this project with other programs and projects from the annual plan.

Editing competition

Goals met by this activity

With the editing competitions, we are joining forces to create as many articles as possible within a certain longer time period. A jury then decides the winners, who are awarded. This quarter we organized 1 editing competition on the topic about Islands, whereas the editors have been editing mostly creating new articles about the islands in the world. The topic was primarily chosen with the goal to cover the gap of lacking articles about the islands in the entire world.

Some considerations

Considering our aim to reach the number od 100.000 articles on Macedonian Wikipedia and improving their quality we decided the topic of the competition to be "Islands" due to their large number over several thousands which will enable creation of several hundreds of articles on Macedonian Wikipedia.

Editing weekends

Goals met by this activity

With our editing weekends, we encouraged Wikipedians to devote more of their free time in writing on relevant topics for the duration of a given weekend. Considering that and having in mind the aim to reach the number od 100.000 articles on Macedonian Wikipedia in the last quarter of the year during the colder weather seasons we had increased pace of organizing editing weekends hens we held 7 editing weekends where 30 users participated creating 64 new articles, improving 20 and creating 1 templates which indicates that we met the goal.

Some considerations

Considering our aim to reach the number od 100.000 articles on Macedonian Wikipedia and improving their quality (to be as much close to the other most developed and numerous Wikipedia's language editions) and to cover information fields that are lacking of articles and content we decided the topics to be:"Botany", "Papal Bulls", "First World War", "Nordic mythology", "Museums", "Poland" and "Bodies of Water".

Editing days

Goals met by this activity

With our editing days, we encouraged Wikipedians to devote more of their free time in writing on relevant topics for the duration of a given day. Considering that this last quarter we had increased the number of organized days with 6 editing days where 29 users (14 different editors) participated with 79 newly created, 4 improved and 9 created templates we met the goal.

Some considerations

Considering our aim to reach the number od 100.000 articles on Macedonian Wikipedia and improving their quality (to be as much close to the other most developed and numerous Wikipedia's language editions) we chose the topics to be, as follows: "Mountain passes in Macedonia", "Deserts in Eurasia", "Geological periods", "Egyptian Pyramids", "Punctuation marks" and "Lines of the public transport in Skopje".

Edit-a-thons

Goals met by this activity

The edit-a-thons aim to increase community spirit in working towards a common goal on a certain topic that has been agreed as being of importance. Quality is improved both by covering missing topics and by extending existing articles. In this last quarter we held 2 edit-a-thons with 2 different groups of students most of whom 15 newly registered users who have been introduced as new members to the community. With these 2 edit-a-thons we have accomplish the goal set in the annual plan for organizing 6 regular edit-a-thons in this year.

Some considerations

Regarding that this type of activity is organized somewhere outside with a group of newly registered or less skilled and familiar users in accordance with the interested groups we chose the topics, days and venues for the edit-a-thons. In November we have organized edit-a-thon on the topic of Psychology for the second consecutive year with the students of the Faculty of Philosophy and in December within the program of the exhibition of images by the Macedonia-Poland photographic cooperation we have organized an edit-a-thon on the topics related with Poland with students of Polish language on the Faculty of Philology. On the two edit-a-thons the participants have created 40 new articles.

Wiki City

Goals met by this activity

With this activity we aim to provide a chance for a groups to visit a city in Macedonia and take photographs of its landscape, main streets, squares, city center, important buildings, institutions such as municipal buildings, schools, churches, museums, courts, neighborhoods, notable landmarks etc. that are not covered with pictures on the Commons Wikimedia neither on our expeditions. This quarter the project continued with the second organized visit of the towns of Delčevo, Pehčevo and Berovo in eastern Macedonia. As in the previous tour this tour has also been organized by bicycle crew "Milton Manaki" which regularly make tours visiting cultural and natural sites attended by cyclists who are also amateur and semi-professional photographers sharing a lot of decent quality images on the social media.

Some considerations

Due to the difficulties in the process of uploading images an editing event was organized for the participants of the two WikiCity tours organized in Kočani and Vinica in August and Delčevo, Pehčevo and Berovo in October but it was also open for the broader public interested in photo sharing and uploading images on Wikipedia. In nearly three hours the participants firstly started with uploading dozens of images from each tour and then proceed to use them in the articles about the towns visited. Two of the participants with their images have created completely new articles. This provided another possibility to connect this project with other projects and contribute to the growth of users and content creation on Wikipedia.

Photohunt

Goals met by this activity

The aim of this project is to enrich articles or create new ones by participants who will visit a place such a geographical location, venue of a concert or cultural happening in order to take photographs that will be used to enrich the content of Macedonian Wikipedia. On this third quarter we had 3 photohunts granted and conducted by 3 different participants with 62 images uploaded so far.

Some considerations

Considering that the participants on this projects are on different level of skills on working on Wikimedia projects the pace and the results of the outcome and usage of the images taken my vary by a different user. Photohunts in this quarter for the first time included a pictures with aerial views taken from drone, visit of wineries and public object of a municipality in Macedonia.

Wikisketch Lessons

Goals met by this activity

Wikiskatch lessons have started as a new kind of activity intended to grow up the knowledge of Wikipedia by providing quick and fast training for working on Wikipedia by creating and editing articles, uploading images, doing a research on highly skilled individuals who are not yet contributing users on Wikipedia. The participants who have been instructed for editing and working on Wikipedia are carefully chosen primarily from the acquaintances known to have a higher degree of knowledge on a certain topic digital marketing, economy, demography, software programming, real estate, mountaineering and geography, sports, literature, mechanics and engineering.

Some considerations

he instructions are given directly and individually with a person in a time span between 30 minutes and hour where the participants are given a sketch of a Wikipedia articles which they follow as a pattern in creating and editing new articles by their own choice with the support of skilled editors who show them editing with the three main tool editors: coded, visual and the translation tool with mandatory embedding image, hyperlink and references. In this quarter we had 10 participants who have contributed by 26 newly created and 4 improved articles.

Wiki Loves Food 2018

Goals met by this activity

Same as in the previous year on the 1st of November, we opened Wiki loves photographic contest, that we decided to focus again on the food, but this time with a broader scope with international cuisines from all around the world along with the traditional Macedonian and regional dishes and cuisines. The outcome of the participants and the number of the uploaded images although lesser than the previous year reached the goal in prospect of participants involved and the content created.

Some considerations

According to the feedback answers of the previous Wiki Loves Food photographic contest organized last year, some changes have been made namely introducing two categories for the contestants for images with professional and amateur quality about which five awards are provided.

Exhibition "Poland through photographs"

Goals met by this activity

Exhibitions are public events where we present content of Wikimedia projects comprised of images with QR-codes links to Wikipedia articles to show to the broader public and thus inform them about our work and having a chance to attract new volunteers or establish contacts for possible future cooperations. In this fourth quarter we organized the Exhibition Poland through photographs on the same pattern as the exhibition with Brazil in the previous year. The project was included in the annual plan All of the images have been printed with QR-codes of links of the articles on Macedonian Wikipedia, which have previously created by the Shared Knowledge employees and members of the Macedonian Wikipedia community. The next day, on 8th of December, in the morning the exhibition was attended by 10 students of Polish language on the Faculty of philology in Skopje who have afterwards participated on the edit-a-thon which was organized on the topics related with Poland. Exhibition of the images lasted for a week in the center for culture "Kočo Racin" in Skopje.

Some considerations

The images which depicted natural and cultural heritage were the winning in Wiki Loves Contests in Poland attracted significant attention and also provided a chance for connection with other project events such as edit-a-thons and editing weekend thus contributing to the significant increase of the content creation in the entire working activities in this year.

Partnerships

Wiki Industry

Goals met by this activity

The principal goal of Wiki Industry project is to make visits to industrial capacities and document the manufacture and production process in different industries as well as the final products, equipment, machinery. Additionally, the aim of this project is also people involved and employed in the industries to be familiarized with Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects in informational and educational, non-commercial and non-marketing purposes. In this quarter we have organized visit of companies and production plants in Ironwork and Metal Industry.

Some considerations

Having in mind the developing economy of Macedonia the outcome and impact of this project providing information and knowledge about specific industries, production process, machinery and notable enterprises gives support for the industries, education and incentive to entrepreneurship. The visit of Ironwork and Metal Industry covered a significant lack of content in this prospect.
