Agenda

[edit]

Informal chat with no set agenda.

Can you please help me with advice on what WikiTranslate should be about. I find it very difficult. Natkabrown (talk) 08:33, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Let's change the pub!

[edit]

The "Shakespeare's Head" has internet and it's working! What do you think about changing the location for the meetup? Natkabrown (talk) 06:27, 20 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've never been there so I don't have a strong opinion, although I see that the meetup got moved there last time round. If it has as comfortable and has as good food as the Penderel's Oak, but with better internet, then I'm all for it. CT Cooper · talk 21:51, 22 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If changed, can we have a little more warning please? Last time I turned up at an empty Penderel's Oak. That's OK for relatively emergency changes (ie. no kitchen) but I'd prefer a bit more notice for this change. - AdamBMorgan (talk) 15:43, 23 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
What sort of notice is necessary? This meetup is three weeks away, and if a decision is made next week, that gives two weeks notice, which seems to be sufficient notice to me. If necessary, all those on the sign-up list could be notified of a change via their talk page. CT Cooper · talk 19:37, 23 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I agree this is adequate notice and functioning Wifi would make a nice change. Philafrenzy (talk) 11:16, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Don't mind where we have it, really. Obviously if the kitchen is shut at the Shakespeare's Head, then we can "be bold" and move again! FWIW, the SH is five minutes' walk from PO and closer to Holborn Tube. I had a nice roast there. --Ritchie333 (talk) 11:33, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Anything more than 24-48 hours notice would be fine. If a decision is reached, maybe call it at least one week beforehand. I don't check here every day and I have no mobile internet devices with which to check en route. I don't mind which place we go to otherwise (and, although I've planned to attend every meet this year, I miss a lot for various reasons so I don't think I have much right to vote on location anyway). - AdamBMorgan (talk) 19:22, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think we need to make a decision with it being just over a week to go now - so is there there anyone who wishes to raise an objection? As I said earlier, I don't have a strong opinion - but I would be happy to make all the onwiki changes and notify everyone on the sign-up list to prevent any problems. I'm presuming this is on a trial basis, with the results of the trial and resulting discussion determining if the move is permanent from Meetup 64 onwards. Meetup 63 is excluded since that's Wikimedia UK's fourth birthday party and the room downstairs has already been booked at the Penderel's Oak Pub. CT Cooper · talk 21:20, 6 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Stick with Penderel's Oak, because it is seven days away. Gordo (talk) 09:08, 7 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I had noticed - that is sufficient time with proper notification. Are there any objections about the actual choice of new pub? CT Cooper · talk 11:16, 7 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK. Change it. I have stated clearly it should not be changed.... Gordo (talk) 18:37, 7 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, for reasons I was not expecting, as the question has already been asked on what kind of notice was necessary, and the answer given was more than 24-48 hours, which we are way clear of here, or at least week - nobody really demanded longer than that. However, an objection is an objection, and I cannot ignore it; momentum has clearly stalled here and I'm not risking extensive drama over it. So I will start-up London 64 and put the trial on the table from the start there - time won't be an issue, hopefully. CT Cooper · talk 19:42, 7 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It's too late now. I agree, lets meet at Penderel's Oak for now. We can chat about changing the place for the next Meetup. See you all soon ;) Natkabrown (talk) 08:21, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think November has been fixed. The downstairs room at Penderel's Oak has been booked, and somebody is going to bake a cake. It is a birthday party! Wikimedia U.K. is four years old! Gordo (talk) 08:28, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
November is indeed fixed, however December isn't. I have pre-emptively changed the venue for that meetup as a result of this proposal, but if anything better is proposed in the October meetup and there is consensus for it, then it can be changed. However, once the November meetup is past and the sign-up list starts filling-up, the venue should probably be fixed for December so there are no complaints. CT Cooper · talk 14:05, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No strong views but if the venue is changed it should be said in a HUGE NOTICE, as many will otherwise go to Holborn on autopilot. Note that I have been trying to get a 2nd mid-week London meetup started for some months but keep getting sidetracked. That would certainly want to be in a different location, probably somewhere with south or west in the postcode - Victoria say. Johnbod (talk) 13:52, 12 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I would be interested in any second meetup location, as it probably won't be any more difficult to get to for me than Holborn. I have created the December page with a red notice stating that the venue has been changed. When it starts coming around I might individually notify previous attendants as well as ensure that a GeoNotice goes out with the correct location. CT Cooper · talk 20:53, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

About the meetup

[edit]
The Penderel's Oak in Holborn
Map
Location of The Penderel's Oak

London meetups are generally casual social events where we...

  • Drink coffee, beer, tea and some of us have Sunday brunch. Sunday roasts are no longer offered but they do a reasonable pizza now and have a range of other snacks and dishes.
  • Welcome guests from around the world and other groups which meet there
  • Chat about Wikimedia or any other topics
  • Experienced Wikimedians help out new editors and share experiences about anything from copyright to editing tools.

You can expect to meet some very keen Wikimedians; however, this is also an open invite for anyone interested in finding out more about Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects such as Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, and Wikisource.

New and prospective editors are also very welcome.

The pub is quite quiet and family-friendly on a Sunday lunchtime, so younger Wikimedians will also feel welcome and safe. Alcohol consumption is not compulsory!

Disabled access

[edit]

The pub has an accessible loo on the ground floor. There are some sections of the pub that are only accessible by steps, but we always meet in the main step free section, usually opposite the main doors.

Location: Penderel's Oak

[edit]

The Penderel's Oak is a Wetherspoons pub in Holborn.
Address: 283-288 High Holborn, London, WC1V 7HP (OpenStreetMap) (Google Maps)

It's easy to find us – we're usually the crowd with several laptops on the large tables straight ahead of you when you enter the pub. If not, then look for a tabletop Wikimedia/Wikipedia poster and laptops with Wikipedia stickers on them. Wikimania t-shirts can also be a good clue.

The Penderel's Oak is between Holborn tube station and Chancery Lane tube station. Farringdon station and Temple tube station are not too far. The pub is also within walking distance of Waterloo railway station (1.3 miles; 2 km), St Pancras railway station (1.2 miles; 1.9 km) and Kings Cross.

Several bus routes also go directly to Holborn station; if travelling from Waterloo, it is quicker to travel by bus than by tube.

Bike hire (TfL scheme) is in Red Lion Street, just opposite the pub.

Visit the TfL Journey Planner for more information about your fastest route.

Back-up plan

[edit]

In the rare event of a kitchen closure or another problem at the Penderel's Oak, the meetup will be relocated to the Shakespeare's Head – another Wetherspoons pub located nearby. To get there from the Penderel's Oak, when exiting onto the street turn left, then when walking past Holborn tube station turn left again down Kingsway, and after a short walk the pub will be found on the left-hand side.
