Agenda

[edit]

The meetup will be an informal gathering with no formal agenda, but please feel free to add any topics that you'd like to raise for discussion.

Some suggested topics of conversation might be:

  • Wikimania updates
  • Wiki events in Scotland
  • Wiki events in the rest of the UK and around the world.
  • Copyright/Copyleft stuff
  • General Wikipedia editing stories and questions
  • Future possible Wiki/GLAM projects
  • <add additional suggested items here>

What we discussed

[edit]

A notable subject of conversation was Wikimedia UK's strategic priorities for the 2025-30 period, the deadline to give feedback is the end of September 2024. Everyone seemed content with the current 6 priorities but what came through strongly was a need to add a 7th priority focused on community support; suggestions focused on practical things WMUK could do to support initiatives by chapter and Wiki community members such as contacting organisations on the behalf of event organizers to gain access (such as organizing GLAM initiatives or photography competitions) or helping support community health initiatives like sponsoring meetups. Another suggestion was helping editors gain access to research material to write Wikipedia articles similar to the Wiki Bookshelf project.

About the meetup

[edit]

This is intended to include any interested Wikimedians who find themselves in Edinburgh or can make their way to Edinburgh on the day. Anyone who has attended previous meetups in Glasgow or Edinburgh encouraged to return to meet new faces! It will be a social gathering for Wikimedia enthusiasts, where we...

  • Have a bite to eat and a drink.
  • Chat about Wikipedia and any other topics we fancy!
  • Explore how we can encourage others to engage with Wikipedia and arrangements for future Edinburgh Wiki meetups.
  • Maybe edit a few Wikipedia articles or contribute to other Wiki projects.

This is mainly a casual social event. You can expect to meet some very keen Wikipedians and some newbies. However this is an open invitation to anyone interested in finding out more about Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, projects re-using Wikipedia, and other collaborative wiki projects. Feel free to come along and raise these discussions!

We intend to host the event on every second month, always on the last Saturday of the month, starting at 11:15 am. However people are free to arrive later or leave early, it is a relaxed social event.

Although the location opens at 11:00 am the event will start a little later at 11:15 so the cafe's staff have some time to setup after opening.

Location

[edit]
Map
Location of the Shrub Cafe' at the Zero Waste Hub at 22 Bread Street, Edinburgh.

The Shrub Coop cafe is extremely accessible via train for those travelling from outside the city via Waverley station, and via bus for Edinburgh residents. It offers food, drinks, and WiFi and should give us plenty of room to meet and have a chat after work!
