CentralNotice/Request

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
(Redirected from CNR)

Start your request for a CentralNotice banner campaign here!

The aims of this process are as follows:

  • To improve community access to central notice through a clear and transparent process.
  • To improve best practice and ensure greater consistency in campaign implementation.
  • To improve communication around campaigns. Creating clear forums for feedback on campaigns, providing metrics back to campaigns and also a clear method for assessing community consensus for campaigns relating to advocacy.
  • To reduce potential clashes between campaigns

Requests must be made, at minimum, 14 days in advance of any campaign

Step #1 : Review the new 2024 usage guidelines for CentralNotice
Step #2 : Create your request
Step #3 : Include it on this page.
Step #4 : Add it to the calendar and check for conflicting campaigns in your period for language/geotargeting. Contact the organizers of the other campaigns to solve them!
Step #5 : Notify target projects and geographic affiliates. Add edit diff links to request.
Step #6 : CN Admin & Community feedback [7 days]
Advocacy/Payments: WMF Legal Review [21 days])
Step #7 : Approval/rejection
Step #8 : CN Admin sets up campaign (recommended to allow for up 3 days)
Step #9 : Campaign enabled

List of currently active volunteer CentralNotice administrators:
DerHexer Johannnes89 Martin Urbanec Vermont
For normal requests, a central notice admin will close the discussion. In the areas of advocacy, the stewards team may be called upon to assess consensus.

  • @Adoscam: Thank you for submitting your request. Before we can progress it, we need additional information because the request template was not completely filled.
    • From looking at the landing, this doesn't look like a campaign for improving articles but for organizing events. Is that correct?
    • You didn't mention the target language(s). French only?
    • Country would be France only, not French nor French-language countries, right?
    • The link to the banner is not very clear to me. Do you mean this banner code? It's made in Wiki code but we need it in HTML/CSS/JavaScript; however, I think that I am capable of converting it.
    • Lastly, you are requesting a campaign of more than 14 days duration. Please note that according to the new CentralNotice guidelines these campaigns require community communication. Please link to a notification of the French community where you also link to this request.

Description - We plan to distribute a survey to capture the challenges faced by new Toolforge users during their tools' set up process. Users with this profile are not active in (or generally haven't joined yet) public communication channels or mailing lists, and we don't have express permission from them to be contacted. If CN admins could recommend a more suitable communication channel, we'll of course evaluate the option.

The survey will help us gather initial feedback about these users' experience, and recruit them for future in-depth interviews to validate a UI-based solution we've been working on. All in all, the goal is to collect insights to inform the design requirements of a proof of concept (Phabricator task: T381266)

Metrics - We'd like to get at least 10 valid responses to the survey and recruit a minimum of 5 participants from the same target group to participate in future usability testing sessions.

Google forms can't be a landing page for a banner. Per CentralNotice/Usage_guidelines#Banner_requirements, "Wikimedia Domains Only — Banners must link only to Wikimedia Foundation or Affiliate-controlled websites, except when using officially approved surveys (see below). They should not include trademarks owned by for-profit entities." Also, please reach out to your colleague's at the Foundation to agree on the usage of CN for survey's. Non-fundraising campaigns need to be checked, approved and activated by volunteer CN admins, too. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 23:41, 3 December 2024 (UTC) PS: The request template should be filled at some point.[reply]
Thanks for the helpful comments! The request was updated: I added further details regarding our goals and reflected latest decisions (e.g., use of LimeSurvey, change in campaign dates). Conversations with CN coordinators and survey specialists are taking place internally to validate the request or – in lack of approval – find suggestions for alternative channels aligned with our limitations. SSanchez-WMF (talk) 21:28, 5 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Once your CN coordinators have created both the banner as well as the campaign in line with the mentioned guidelines, volunteer CN admins can take a look. The campaign duration looks reasonable and WWikitech is a project which rarely receives banners, so once we hear that the survey itself has been approved, we should be able to give our approval as volunteer CN admins as well.
@TAndic (WMF) fyi, I think the ping probably didn't reach you. Johannnes89 (talk) 18:57, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Johannnes89 and all for helping to guide this! I'll be working with @SSanchez-WMF to help on the survey side, and I agree this seems like a good candidate for a wikitech banner after discussing off-wiki with Sarai :). I assume this request may stay open into January as the team works to get all the components together (in case it's affecting the CN admins' workflows, no action needed for now). - TAndic (WMF) (talk) 19:51, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for submitting the request so early! I don't see an issue with volunteer CentralNotice admin approval as required by CentralNotice/Usage guidelines#Policies for Affiliates and WMF Staff. I want to point out though (as mentioned last time [1]), that I would expect WMDE CentralNotice admins to create both campaign and banner, instead of relying on volunteers (which is also what the CentralNotice guidelines ask for). Best --Johannnes89 (talk) 17:59, 2 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Johannes89, I am working on it. Christoph Jackel (WMDE) 10:29, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Johannnes89:, @Christoph Jackel (WMDE): This is a joint program of WMDE and WMAT, so I will handle the camapign and banner. I have written a notification to the community on de.wikipedia for this banner and also for the second campaign in January, CentralNotice/Request/wikidaheim2025, at Wikipedia:Projektdiskussion. As written there, I am new to this and I am not sure how to ask for approval from volunteer CN admins. --Manfred Werner (WMAT) (talk) 13:00, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. You can create both the banner as well as the campaign via the CN admin interface. Once you link the created campaign & banner on this page, volunteer CN admins can take a look. If no-one reacts, you can ping one of the admins mentioned at CentralNotice/Request, preferably (or Ciell who is not on the list, but also active and very helpful as well). @Johannnes89: could you please check this again? best --Christian Philipp (WMAT) (talk) 10:57, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the ping @Christian Philipp (WMAT)! We appreciate if @Manfred Werner (WMAT) creates the campaign & banner via the CentralNotice interface, once Meta:Requests for CentralNotice adminship/Manfred Werner (WMAT) is successful. It just needs approval from volunteer CN admins per CentralNotice/Usage guidelines#Policies for Affiliates and WMF Staff, but can be created & managed by yourself.
Per CentralNotice/Usage guidelines campaigns running longer than two weeks usually require community approval. Even if this is an established campaign, the unusually long duration should be discussed with the de(-AT) community.
Personally I think the duration might be ok, if the banner is running on a low impression diet and with limited traffic, in order to make sure it doesn't annoy editors (and readers) again and again for many weeks... Johannnes89 (talk) 18:40, 2 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have changed the start date of the campaign in January from 1st to 7th, also talked about it with Christian. It's because I am on vacation around new year's eve and have very limited internet access in this time, so it would be difficult to act if there are issues with the banner or the campaign. --Manfred Werner (WMAT) (talk) 13:22, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have two questions regarding the banner:

  • is it possible to only show the banner on, let's say, 5th refresh on the projects? We don't want to spam the users with the banner on every page, if possible; if not, showing on every page is fine.
  • this banner is almost definitely not dark mode compatible - can someone help me with that?

@Althair please note that CentralNotice/Usage guidelines require approval from your local community for banners running longer than two weeks (especially if the banners is also shown to logged-out users). --Johannnes89 (talk) 18:38, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Johannnes89: I notified 6 days ago/P and there was no clear opposition. Althair (talk) 00:21, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Johannnes89: Ping corrected. —DerHexer (Talk) 13:37, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Althair: Please notice furthermore that in Argentina, for example, there are up to four campaigns running as of now. Although one is scheduled end in November, at least CentralNotice/Request/16 días de activismo en Latinoamérica (ping @Cftoro (WMCL):) will also run until at least 10 December. Would it make sense to shorten your campaign to be started afterwards? Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 11:39, 26 November 2024 (UTC) CC Johannnes89[reply]
@DerHexer: I would be willing to shorten the campaign in Argentina or not do it in Argentina at all. Althair (talk) 16:32, 27 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Althair: Argentina was just an example. There are more countries overlapping. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 17:11, 27 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@DerHexer: If necessary, the duration could be reduced or the banner space could be shared with other campaigns. Althair (talk) 00:13, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Althair: So starting on 11 December would be fine with you? Then we can create the campaign. The community approval reads funny but in favour of the campaign. ;) Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 13:38, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@DerHexer: if it is absolutely necessary to put it on so late.... yes. Althair (talk) 01:19, 1 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Althair: No, it's not necessary. But I've already said that the other option is to find an agreement with Cftoro (WMCL) whether or not the two campaigns can run at the same time. We as CN admins cannot make the decisions for your two campaigns here, we can just tell you that there is a conflict and the options how to solve them. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 10:55, 2 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, yes, better to start on the 11th. Althair (talk) 16:21, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Althair@DerHexer, sorry for my late response in this. If you like you can reduce the time of CentralNotice/Request/16 días de activismo en Latinoamérica so that it appears "less" to people. These last few days it can be set as a low priority so as not to clash with other campaigns. Best, Carla Toro (WMCL) (talk) 15:01, 4 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't matter @Cftoro (WMCL): your campaign lasts much less, the one I proposed can start on the 11th without problems. Althair (talk) 20:41, 4 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry @DerHexer:, I undid the change wrong yesterday, it's not necessary.

Das ist ne Menge Text. Idealerweise wärs weniger (nur zum Vergleich: So sieht unser Template aus [6]). Aber wie bereits in der Vergangenheit (z.B. [7][8]) lässt sich das auch mit viel Text umsetzen. --Johannnes89 (talk) 20:14, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

As discussed: I changed and shortened the text of the banner. Please for desktop and mobile. Thank you.
Thanks, enabled, starting on December 6 as requested. --Johannnes89 (talk) 08:47, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Note that I've split the campaign into two (second campaign [12], second banner [13]) in order to be able to increase visibility for logged-in users in the first campaign (logged-out users still have less priority than the fundraising campaign which is currently running). • @Darafsh: Hey, sorry for being a bit late on this one. Please note some information:
    • According to the new CN guidelines, we kindly ask you to submit the request at least 14 days in advance. It is fine with this campaign.
    • Because the campaign is longer than 14 days, we need to ask you to communicate it to the affected communities beforehand (not needed for campaigns up to 14 days). However, since this is a well-known event, I make an exception here. Nevertheless, if you want to communicate it now that the campaign will happen and a link to the request page, I don't mind. ;)
    • The banner text you provided is English only. However, you requested it to be available in Uzbek, Kazakh, Russian, Kyrgyz, Tajik, Turkmen, Persian. — Before we can activate the campaign, please have the translation ready (you can submit them here, just change the languages). The same is required for the landing page, but I could see that this is already marked for translation and many languages ready; thank you! — Usually, I would add a link to the banner where people can add more translation, but I won't do this now because the number of target languages is limited.
    • I also had to change the banner design from upright to landscape mode because of the standard banner which is designed like that (because of the widescreen desktop PC's), and I made the full banner clickable, not just the one link in the center. I hope that's fine with you.
    • I have created the campaign and banner (preview). Please check everything, approve it and ping me so that I can enable the campaign (as long as the translation are available, I can approve them as soon as they are here). Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 13:07, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@DerHexer: I've changed the banner code a bit to have the Cyrillic logo be shown for Cyrillic languages. Can you check it please? Красныйwanna talk? 14:34, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Dear @DerHexer, Thank you so much for your help. We have translated the message into the targeted languages, and the changes you made are approved. Please proceed with enabling the campaign. Thanks again Darafsh (talk) 16:43, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Darafsh: Thanks, I marked the translation as published and enabled the banner. @Красный: No, it doesn't work like that in the banner source code (wiki markup is not possible). ;) But with the link to the Cyrillic version I could adjust the banner accordingly. @Both: Let me know when you have other logos, like a version in Farsi, etc. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 22:49, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Afek,

Great to have SheSaid back, and happy to help set up the campaign and banner.

Like last year, we will only enable the campaign for those languages in which the banner + landing page has translations. Can you please supply me with a list of these before the expressed starting date of the campaign? I will try and create a preview of the banner for you to check out over the weekend. Ciell (talk) 16:39, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Ciell,
Sorry for the late answer and thank you for your help.
The participating languages areː
Afek91 (talk) 09:50, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the list @Afek91. All of these start on Sept 1st?
Here is a preview of the banner, I tried to make it resemble the mock up above as much as I can. Please review and tell me what you think.
Meanwhile, you and the colleagues can start translations ahead of the start of the campaign here. Ciell (talk) 18:31, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also:
I am proposing the Wikipedia banner to start on Sept 2nd, because the WLM banners will also already go live on the 1st. Does that make sense to you? Ciell (talk) 18:49, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Yes all start on the 1st of september.
Okey with the banner and it all makes sence.
Cheers! Afek91 (talk) 17:36, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Great, I enabled both campaigns to start as scheduled. Ciell (talk) 16:03, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Afek,

Over the weekend I have been working to improve the SheSaid banners by shortening the participant pipeline (number of clicks they need to engage with the landing page). By creating individual campaigns and banners for all languages, the engagement is now much more direct. For this I reviewed all the languages and landing pages you have listed on the Meta page and collected them here in one overview with the information I need for the banners, and noticed that 5 languages do not have a landing page for SheSaid 2024: I have decided to not target these languages anymore, since I assume these are not really participating? No landing page means no available information for participants. For the 4 languages that I, after a month of running the translatable banner, don't have a local language version on the banner text available, they are still receiving the general banner they saw previously, but will still be send to Meta where the participant will have to look up their project manually (instead of being directed to their Wikiquote directly).

I hope this makes sense, please let me know if you have questions! Ciell (talk) 15:00, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

We'd like to continue the campaign from last year (request). The banner will only be running for two days before the first Wednesday of each month, and will be targeted to users with less than 100 edits. Jon Harald Søby (WMNO) (talk) 08:24, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@DerHexer you handled this last year right? Do you have time to coordinate again? Ciell (talk) 18:51, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, Jon organized it himself. I hope that he will do it for this year again. ;) And as far as I know, they want to reuse the campaign of last year. —DerHexer (Talk) 19:13, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, missed these messages. Yes, I can handle it myself. :-) Jon Harald Søby (WMNO) (talk) 15:33, 29 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
