Start your request for a CentralNotice banner campaign here!

The aims of this process are as follows:

  • To improve community access to central notice through a clear and transparent process.
  • To improve best practice and ensure greater consistency in campaign implementation.
  • To improve communication around campaigns. Creating clear forums for feedback on campaigns, providing metrics back to campaigns and also a clear method for assessing community consensus for campaigns relating to advocacy.
  • To reduce potential clashes between campaigns

Requests must be made, at minimum, 14 days in advance of any campaign

Step #1 : Review the new 2024 usage guidelines for CentralNotice
Step #2 : Create your request
Step #3 : Include it on this page.
Step #4 : Add it to the calendar and check for conflicting campaigns in your period for language/geotargeting. Contact the organizers of the other campaigns to solve them!
Step #5 : Notify target projects and geographic affiliates. Add edit diff links to request.
Step #6 : CN Admin & Community feedback [7 days]
Advocacy/Payments: WMF Legal Review [21 days])
Step #7 : Approval/rejection
Step #8 : CN Admin sets up campaign (recommended to allow for up 3 days)

What is the purpose of the campaign? How will you measure the success of the campaign?

Description - WMDE offers editors of Wikipedia a range of support. This includes but is not limited to trainings, funding for their own projects, organising of events and so on. This support is not known by quite a few volunteers of the German Wikipedia. With this campaign, we want to make people aware of the WMDE community portal. The community portal presents the different aspects of Wikimedia Deutschland's work

Depending on the targeting, users receive a different landing page. The banner, which is aimed at inexperienced users, refers to learning offers from both WMDE and the community. The banner for experienced users refers to a page in the community portal that presents the various training courses.

Metrics -

We hope that the WMDE Community Portal site will become more popular. It is therefore of interest to us that the “News” page in the portal in particular is observed by more users.We will also track whether the campaign has a (positive) influence on the editing behavior of users who we refer to as occasional editors. The tracking is secured by our in-house data unit.

Discussion

The campaign will be announced on the German Wikipedia in the course of next week. This will also allow the community to submit objections or communicate requests for changes. The link to the communication will then be added here.

    @Oscar .: They are too much apart, I would go with two separate notifications. I think that a short message to both village pumps will be sufficient. And with the CentralNotice, a separate Watchlist-summary doesn't seem to be so much needed. But that's up to you. Description - Wiki Loves Folklore, an annual international photography contest hosted on Wikimedia Commons from February 1st to March 31st, serves as a global initiative to amass a diverse collection of media. The primary objective is to contribute content to Wikipedia and other online platforms, all under free licenses. The contest focuses on capturing and showcasing unique images that represent and document the intangible cultural heritage of various communities worldwide.

Structured with both national coordinators and an International Team, the campaign ensures comprehensive coverage. National coordinators, responsible for organizing Wiki Loves Folklore within their respective countries, play a vital role in fostering local participation. Simultaneously, the International Team steps in to organize the contest in countries lacking designated national coordinators, thereby addressing the representation gap within the Wikimedia ecosystem.

@Tiven2240 There is no problem with displaying the banner for the Feminism and Folklore 2025 article writing contest. However, there is currently no community consensus to show the WLFB contest banner (this specific banner). @খাত্তাব হাসান WLFBD is a Wikimedia commons project related to photography. The users via this banner are landed on Wikimedia Commons and not Bangla Wikipedia. This Banner clearly mentions that it will run in Bangladesh and not only on Bangla Wikipedia. That means any user irrespective of any Wiki Language edition accessing Wiki projects in Bangladesh user can see this Banner and go to Commons to upload. Please note that this was last year's decision about the folklore commons photo contest banner organized by two banned wikimedians. There is no consensus to show the folklore commons photo contest banner on Bangla Wikipedia. (However, note also there is no restriction on organising and giving banner for feminism and folklore wikipedia article writing competition on Bangla wikipedia.) @খাত্তাব হাসান I don't know if you read my previous messages well. It clearly seems that there is a false claim in the name of community consensus here. There is no indication on the pages that the event WLFBD or FNFBD is banned on Bangla wiki. Both the events are running successfully and that gives us motivation to run the banner in Bangladesh region irrespective of any Wiki Project like commons/wiki/etc. My sincere request is to keep local disputes on local level. Hi Johannes, den Haken bei "unangemeldete Benutzer" bitte rausnehmen. Kampagne richtet sich nur an angemeldete. Beim Bannertext bricht es komisch um, kannst Du einen Umbruch nach Satz 2 erzwingen, so dass an logischer Stelle ein Umbruch entsteht? Nach den Korrekturen kann es dann gerne enabled werden. B. in Luxemburg keine einzige Person, die in der deutschsprachigen WP aktiv ist, oder ist Dir schon mal jemand begegnet? ;D Da wir mit Neu-Ulm aber z.   • @Adoscam: Thank you for submitting your request. Before we can progress it, we need additional information because the request template was not completely filled.
    • From looking at the landing, this doesn't look like a campaign for improving articles but for organizing events. Is that correct?
    • You didn't mention the target language(s). French only?
    • Country would be France only, not French nor French-language countries, right?
    • The link to the banner is not very clear to me. Do you mean this banner code? It's made in Wiki code but we need it in HTML/CSS/JavaScript; however, I think that I am capable of converting it.
    • Lastly, you are requesting a campaign of more than 14 days duration. Please note that according to the new CentralNotice guidelines these campaigns require community communication. Please link to a notification of the French community where you also link to this request.

    • Yes it is not a campaign. But rather a call for participation before the campaign which starts in March 2025.
    • Yes the language is mainly French. If we can add other languages ​​to allow other communities of other language versions to see, that would be a good thing. It is up to *you to see what would be more effective.

Description - Wiki Loves Folklore, an annual international photography contest hosted on Wikimedia Commons from February 1st to March 31st, serves as a global initiative to amass a diverse collection of media. The primary objective is to contribute content to Wikipedia and other online platforms, all under free licenses. The contest focuses on capturing and showcasing unique images that represent and document the intangible cultural heritage of various communities worldwide.

Structured with both national coordinators and an International Team, the campaign ensures comprehensive coverage. National coordinators, responsible for organizing Wiki Loves Folklore within their respective countries, play a vital role in fostering local participation. Simultaneously, the International Team steps in to organize the contest in countries lacking designated national coordinators, thereby addressing the representation gap within the Wikimedia ecosystem.

Description - We plan to distribute a survey to capture the challenges faced by new Toolforge users during their tools' set up process. Users with this profile are not active in (or generally haven't joined yet) public communication channels or mailing lists, and we don't have express permission from them to be contacted. If CN admins could recommend a more suitable communication channel, we'll of course evaluate the option.

The survey will help us gather initial feedback about these users' experience, and recruit them for future in-depth interviews to validate a UI-based solution we've been working on. All in all, the goal is to collect insights to inform the design requirements of a proof of concept (Phabricator task: T381266)

Metrics - We'd like to get at least 10 valid responses to the survey and recruit a minimum of 5 participants from the same target group to participate in future usability testing sessions.

Google forms can't be a landing page for a banner. Per CentralNotice/Usage_guidelines#Banner_requirements, "Wikimedia Domains Only — Banners must link only to Wikimedia Foundation or Affiliate-controlled websites, except when using officially approved surveys (see below). They should not include trademarks owned by for-profit entities." Also, please reach out to your colleague's at the Foundation to agree on the usage of CN for survey's. Conversations with CN coordinators and survey specialists are taking place internally to validate the request or – in lack of approval – find suggestions for alternative channels aligned with our limitations. Once your CN coordinators have created both the banner as well as the campaign in line with the mentioned guidelines, volunteer CN admins can take a look. The campaign duration looks reasonable and WWikitech is a project which rarely receives banners, so once we hear that the survey itself has been approved, we should be able to give our approval as volunteer CN admins as well.

  • @SSanchez-WMF: this banner only displays for Help:Toolforge subpages and not the whole wiki, correct? If yes, I think it would make sense to display at 100% coverage (or a similarly high coverage).
  • I've reviewed the survey and banner (direct link button with privacy statement linked in banner, similar to the 2024 WMDE wikidata survey) and it is approved from the WMF side. Sarai needed some JS magic, which got more Foundation staff involved, including me - so I thought it didn't make sense to ask for volunteers' time anymore. @SGrabarczuk (WMF) I don't want to be overly bureaucratic and from our comments it was basically clear, that we agreed with this campaign, but I want to point out that the new CentralNotice/Usage guidelines (which were revised by CN admins & WMF staff) require volunteer approval for all campaigns with the only exemption being fundraising banners.
If you / other WMF members believe this takes to much time, we should probably start a discussion about further exemptions. But the way the approval guidelines are currently written doesn't leave a different option than asking volunteer CN admins to give their final approval to a prepared campaign + banner (it's of course approved, see my comment above). Hi, as per @Aktron's comment here, this banner should be only shown on Czech Wikipedia. I've made the mistake when copying the last year's request where it is specified for the banner to be shown in Czech Republic and Slovakia, but only in Czech language. Description - WikiPortraits is hosting a Wikipedia Day event at Park City, UT, US, during the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. Although coordination is occurring on enwiki, there will be Commons and Wikidata presentations. enwiki already has a Watchlist geonotice.

Is it possible to do the State of Utah, US? At w:en:Wikipedia:Geonotice/list.json, we are using "corners" : [[38, -109], [42, -114.1]] for our coordinates.

Thanks for the ping @Christian Philipp (WMAT)! We appreciate if @Manfred Werner (WMAT) creates the campaign & banner via the CentralNotice interface, once Meta:Requests for CentralNotice adminship/Manfred Werner (WMAT) is successful. It just needs approval from volunteer CN admins per CentralNotice/Usage guidelines#Policies for Affiliates and WMF Staff, but can be created & managed by yourself.
Per CentralNotice/Usage guidelines campaigns running longer than two weeks usually require community approval. Even if this is an established campaign, the unusually long duration should be discussed with the de(-AT) community.
Personally I think the duration might be ok, if the banner is running on a low impression diet and with limited traffic, in order to make sure it doesn't annoy editors (and readers) again and again for many weeks... Johannnes89 (talk) 18:40, 2 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have changed the start date of the campaign in January from 1st to 7th, also talked about it with Christian. Looks good to me. I don't see a close button in the CN interface preview for some reason, but it works in the onwiki preview [18].
Restarting the banner cycle every week effectively means users will see the banner 12 times which seems a bit much to me. I suggest either limiting it to two impressions per cycle (= 8 total impressions in 3,5 weeks) or extending the cycle a bit, e.g. to 67435200 seconds (1.5 weeks -> 9 total impressions). Thanks, I've activated the campaign, giving my approval as a volunteer CN admin.
I suggest trying to ping volunteer CN admins again for the GLAM request (those without ties to WMF or affiliates like WMDE). Perhaps checking the different CN logs [19] helps finding someone active. The backlog at CNR suggests, that most volunteer CN admins are currently busy, but given that it's just about approving the banner + campaign you created, there should be somebody who can spend 5 minutes to do that.
