Converting C13_WMDE_Test09_13102? campaigns to use CentralNotice throttle feature

[edit]

Hello, this is just a notice that I'm unlinking blank banners from the C13_WMDE_Test09_131022 and C13_WMDE_Test09_131023 campaigns, and setting the campaign throttle to 6.7% for both. This should not affect banner allocations.

Update: Sorry, I see in the logs that you'd already done this for C13_WMDE_Test09_131023... Thanks!

Err, and note also that this bug is currently affecting the GlobalAllocation display for your campaigns: https://wikimedia.mingle.thoughtworks.com/projects/fundraiser_2012/cards/1131

Temporary rights

[edit]

Hello Kai, I've noticed that your temporary rights here on meta already expired some time ago, however, I noticed that you just recently used them again. Do you still need the rights? If so, I'd like to formally prolong your term, if not I'd like to remove the rights. Please let me know. Regards, -Barras talk 14:21, 1 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Kai. I have removed your CNA rights as they were set to expire today. Should you need them again, feel free to open a new request. Best regards. -- M\A 12:14, 1 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Prototyping parameterized banner content?

[edit]

Hi Kai,

I had an idea for a potential improvement to how banner content is edited in CentralNotice, and thought I would run it by you for a second opinion. I see that in https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:CentralNoticeBanners/edit/B16WMDE_01_160927_ctrl you're already transcluding a javascript file MediaWiki:WMDE_FR2015/Resources/DesktopBanner.js using a parameterized call. I believe it might be beneficial to parameterize the entire banner HTML payload, so that the banner content looks something like:

  {{MediaWiki:WMDE_FR2015/Resources/Layout/ControlDesign
    | background = 'blue'
    | banner-closed-cookie-custom-value = 'BA01'
    | ....
  }}

Then, cloning banners to A/B test is much simpler, error-resistant, and it's clear which parameters we're customizing in each banner instance.

Let me know what you think! Thanks, Awight (WMF) (talk) 19:47, 4 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Awight (WMF):, thank you for proposing this. Our fundraising tech team has been talking about how to improve banner management during the campaign as well. We came up with the idea to factor out certain modules into templates (such as the progress bar, the close button, or the form itself). The idea is to parametrize the modules to pass e. g. the color to it. We also discussed your idea to do this on an even higher level and liked it for its clearly arranged approach. With the need of having every banner still working after a test ended, this does not seem practicable, though. We are testing in very small steps and every little change would need to be parametrized, which will likely end up in having a lot of parameters. Especially the HTML code and the styles are changing very often, so we think we will just factor out our javascript code into parametrized templates.
