[edit]Metrics - Last year 1,260 articles were created during the campaign, and we expect a similar level of participation this year. Nearly 55% of participants reported that they learned about the contest through the CentralNotice banner, highlighting its key role in promoting the campaign. A similar results page will be published at the end of this year’s contest, featuring all relevant metrics and insights.

[edit]Central Notice admin comments
[edit]- @OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA): Thank you for your request. Since the last edition, the CentralNotice/Usage guidelines have been updated and provide much stricter rules for (fully) global campaigns. Technically, it's no problem to create the proposed banner, but there a couple of remarks before this campaign can be approved and enabled:
- Campaigns should usually not run for more than 14 days. Exceptions can be made (especially for established campaigns), but in that case local announcements should be sent to all targeted communities (e.g., through global village pumps and MassMessage). Local ambassadors for each participating country/language/affiliate are highly recommended. How do you want to handle involvement of local communities under these new conditions?
- Campaigns should only be shown to language communities where the landing page and banners have been translated. A couple of banner translations from 2024 are ready and could be copied to 2025. Furthermore, a link in the banner can invite people to help with banner translations which can be reused from the previous campaign. However, please provide as many translations as possible, for both, the banner and the landing page. Please note that all translations need to be approved by CentralNotice admins because of technical limitations which adds a lot of extra work on us. For that reason, we usually don't enable campaigns for languages that are not available yet. As this is a returning campaign, we might make an exception here, but maybe you can focus on some preferred communities. How do you want to handle translations of banner and campaign?
- Please note that Catalan communities have opted out from campaigns a) that are not translated into the local language, b) that are not announced on their local wikis.
- There are a couple of campaign scheduled for the same date (and language/country, which is all for this campaign as of now), including some large campaigns like Wiki Loves Earth, CentralNotice/Request/2025 annual review (UCoC EG/U4C Charter), CentralNotice/Request/Coordinate Me 2025 Wikidata contest, etc., please have a look at CentralNotice/Calendar. Usually, it's your duty to get this coordinated with the other organizers so that users will not suffer from banner blindness. Certainly, it is possible to find solutions for this but it should be coordinated as soon as possible.
- Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 23:14, 11 April 2025 (UTC)
- @DerHexer, Thank you for the helpful feedback!
- We acknowledge that our campaign qualifies as an established campaign. However, if crucially, it's fine to shorten the banner timeline to 14 days and/or shift it to more convenient dates to avoid overlap with other campaigns.
- From our side:
- We have submitted a MassMessage request for previous participants.
- We’ve also requested announcements on the village pumps of the relevant communities.
- The message includes a call to help with translations of the landing page and banner, as well as an invitation to join as a local ambassador.
- We’ve copied last year’s banner translations into this year’s campaign and are continuing to collect as many translations as possible — part of them is already in place.
- Lastly, I’d like to clarify:
- What exactly do you mean by “coordinating with other campaign organizers”?
- Should we reach out to each one individually to discuss shifting dates, or is there another form of coordination you’re referring to?
- Please let us know if further adjustments are needed. OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 16:38, 15 April 2025 (UTC)
- @DerHexer, hi! Do you have any updates on the banner state? When it's possible to be approved? OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 11:49, 22 April 2025 (UTC)
- @OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA): I suggest to have the UCDM campaign started after the UCoC campaign, on 2 May (until 12 May). There will be overlap with the Wikidata competition, but that cannot be avoided and has less overlap because of their limited targeting. Thank you for the MassMessages and preparations. Together with the copied translations for the banner and reaching out to translators, I think it's okay to proceed with the campaign implementation: Please find here the campaign and banner (preview). Please everything, approve it and ping me so that I can enable it. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 21:54, 22 April 2025 (UTC)
- @DerHexer Thanks for your comments. We approve the campaign and the banner. In case the start date of the campaign is postponed, is it possible to have it until 16th May? (2 weeks, and it will match with the end of the contest). OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 15:13, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, sure. I have changed it accordingly and enabled the campaign. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 16:03, 23 April 2025 (UTC)

[edit]Hi everyone! Just a quick FYI, I’ve requested the banner dates for one month, as we've done in previous years where the banner typically ran for the full month. Would it be okay to do the same this time? Since it’s for the whole month, I assume we can go with a lower rate as well. Thanks! --Carla Toro (WMCL) (talk) 20:29, 2 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Cftoro (WMCL): Campaigns longer than two weeks can be enabled when there is local community communication about that (i.e., no complaints about it). However, please notice that CentralNotice/Request/CEE Primavera 2025 partly targets a similar audience. Please make an arrangement between your campaigns and communicate it to the CentralNotice admins. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 21:47, 11 April 2025 (UTC)
- @DerHexer, thanks for the update :-). I've notified the community here. I saw that the other campaign changed the dates of the banner so its up until May 21st. We'll be ok with starting our banner campaign in that date and ending on June 8. Let me know if that would be possible. Thanks again, best. Carla Toro (WMCL) (talk) 21:50, 15 April 2025 (UTC)

- Hi @DerHexer:! The campaign looks great, thank you! In my message to the community, I mentioned the campaign and the banner (my mistake for not including the English version as well). The original message said, "as usual, a banner will be released (...)." I followed up with another post to highlight the banner specifically for Latin America, along with its release dates. Best, Carla Toro (WMCL) (talk) 19:00, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
- Oops, I must have overlooked it although I speak Spanish, sorry. =) Thanks for the addition! I have enabled the campaign. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 19:13, 24 April 2025 (UTC)

[edit]Now the banner code is completed (it should be displayed in 17 different language versions depending on the user's language setting) and also the geographical targetting is set. Please take look and let me know if it is alright like that or if something should be changed. I am not sure about the language switch of the banner, still looking into it. It is displayed correctly in English, but at least in the preview I can not make the languages switch. --Manfred Werner (WMAT) (talk) 14:41, 24 April 2025 (UTC) Edit: The language switch is working. --Manfred Werner (WMAT) (talk) 18:38, 24 April 2025 (UTC)

[edit]Hi,
I am not sure if you are running this for both logged in and logged out users but just to let you know, that there will be fundraising banners in Brazil until the 15th of April for logged out users. This would mean that logged out users will only see your banner after they have seen their max impression of fundraising banners. Since this is the second half of the fundraising campaign, many users might already be at the max impression for fundraising banners and hopefully will see mainly your banners. Best, JBrungs (WMF) (talk) 05:37, 13 March 2025 (UTC)

- Perfect, thanks User:Lilian Viana and DerHexer.
- I have now also created the campaign with the technical settings for the banner; please review.
- I have added both pt and pt-br language to be targeted, but am aware there are differences between these languages. Would you like to only target pt as requested, or also pt-br?
- I notice from the landing page, you'll have a kick-off event on March 31st. Would you like the banner to start the day before April 1, so people might join you for that event?
- After reviewing the landing page and the information given there, I think the campaign is best suited for logged in users only. When designing a landing page to activate non-registered visitors, often passive readers, the landing page should contain a very simple and actionable outline for the newcomers. Here that is not the case. I therefore propose the banner will only be shown to registered users (fyi @JBrungs).
- Please let me know if the campaign is good to go, and when you have questions or things should be changed. Ciell (talk) 10:09, 24 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Lilian Viana: As of now, the campaign targets all Portuguese speakers around the world on Portuguese Wikipedia, not only the ones living in Portuguese-speaking countries. Is there a specific reason why you intend to focus on these countries only? PS: The campaign still waits for your approval. :) Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 14:48, 1 April 2025 (UTC)
- Hello @DerHexer! Correct, the campaign focuses on Portuguese language speakers regardless of their country of origin. I approve the banner being presented. Do I need to make the approval in a specific location, or is it sufficient to inform you here? I apologize for my delay and the confusion; this process is new to me. Thank you a lot for all the patience Lilian Viana (talk) 13:32, 4 April 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @JBrungs (WMF), Sorry for my delay. Please, include pt and pt-br .
- If it's possibile we would like that non-registered visitors could see the banner. We are planning in-person activities in libraries, and the banner can help bring newcomers to these events and make librarians aware of and engaged in the campaign. If it's not possible, I understand. Again, I'm sorry about my delay. Thank you! Lilian Viana (talk) 13:28, 4 April 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @Lilian Viana,
- The campaign is currently running and will run for another week (finish next week Tuesday). Non-logged in users will see 10 impressions of a fundraising banner first and then will see your banner. As the campaign has now been running since mid-March, many people might have already had their 10 impressions and hopefully get shown your banner instead. Have a great campaign. Best, JBrungs (WMF) (talk) 04:30, 7 April 2025 (UTC)

[edit]- @EPorto (WMB): Am I assuming right that you don't use the local SiteNotice because this cannot process CSS as requested? Usually, targeting one project should be handled locally. Furthermore, this was requested as an unusually long campaign, even without a country limitation where I would have expected Brazil only, as far as I can see. Why is this intensive use of CentralNotice needed and what kind of cycles do you have in mind the banners should be shown during that long time? And where was this announced locally? I cannot even find it in your grant request. — Thanks for preparing the banner code which looks good to me. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 18:19, 31 March 2025 (UTC)
- @EPorto (WMB): The campaign date is getting closer. Can you give us some feedback for my questions, please? Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 21:35, 11 April 2025 (UTC)
- Hi, @DerHexer Sorry, My mistake on the duration of the campaign, Our policy is only to ask for a month for the banner, even when the campaign is running for three months. I'm amending the proposal. As far of the announcement, we announced yesterday and at the beginning of the month. The grant request links to our plan of activities, which contains the project, announced and approved in last November. Sorry for not facilitating the link previously.
- For the local SiteNotice, to be honest, I didn't know that that existed and am not sure how to proceed or if it would work?
- Thank you so much for your patience and dedicated work. Cheers, EPorto (WMB) (talk) 22:11, 11 April 2025 (UTC)

- @EPorto (WMB): Indeed, the competition has been announced but not that it will be conducted through a (CentralNotice) banner campaign. Please add a sentence about that (with a link to this page) to the general announcement. When this is done, please check the campaign and banner (preview). Please ping me with your approval so that I can enable the campaign (when it was communicated). Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 17:10, 12 April 2025 (UTC)

[edit]- @Xeno (WMF) and Keegan (WMF): I'm a bit confused by this request. Do you want us volunteer CN admins to create this for you? According to the CN guidelines, WMF and affiliate should be created by their staff and the volunteer CNA's just check that and enable the campaign. — However, the proposed settings are not so difficult so that I could help with the creation if need be. However, some remarks:
- Please note that Catalan communities have opted out from campaigns a) that are not translated into the local language, b) that are not announced on their local wiki.
- The proposed landing page looks very unclear to me. Are you sure that this is the right one? I cannot easily identify a call-to-action. I don't really know what you want me to do and why. At first, I thought that you were requesting a campaign for voting on the new changes (see “Metrics: voter turnout”).
- If the latter is true, a better targeting could make sense (minimum number of edits, etc.). But also for a call for feedback a minimum level of knowledge about our communities might make sense instead of inviting every newly registered account to give feedback on such a complex change.
- Please get some more information handy, the campaign is scheduled to start in a week! (And I will be travelling most of the time, just saying.) Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 22:01, 11 April 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks DerHexer, your kind assistance would be really appreciated (I'm afraid I'm not entirely clear on the process to create the banner itself! I will work to learn for next time...).
- this page Universal Code of Conduct/Annual review/2025/Voter information wasn't created at the time I submitted the request, but it is now. It will be updated also, before the vote - I think this is a better landing page.
- It probably makes sense to set the diet to the users that would more likely meet the eligibility requirements, such as at least 300 edits.
- this page Universal Code of Conduct/Annual review/2025/Voter information wasn't created at the time I submitted the request, but it is now. It will be updated also, before the vote - I think this is a better landing page.
- And it's fine if this doesn't launch right away, due to the short timing window and your communicated capacity - we appreciate your help! Xeno (WMF) (talk) 16:27, 16 April 2025 (UTC)
- @DerHexer: we should be good to launch, please let us know if there are further questions. The reason this was brought to the volunteer CN request is because this is on behalf of the U4C who are running this election, it's a volunteer project that we're helping facilitate and not a Foundation initiative. I hope that helps clarify the forum question. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 17:18, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

- @Keegan (WMF) and Xeno (WMF): I have created the campaign and banner (preview). I have adjusted the banner to make translations easier and set up the 300 local edits threshold. Please help with spreading the word about translations of the banner and landing page. The former I will check regularly so that banner translations will be quickly approved. Please check everything, approve it and ping me so that I can activate the campaign. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 21:34, 22 April 2025 (UTC)

In the future, please only use a copy of this banner and not older versions. :) Best,

- Am I right in assuming that you, Pharos and Jeremyb, will handle this campaign? Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 11:22, 22 February 2025 (UTC)
Hi Pharos, I had to disable both campaigns that were live since yesterday for WCNA.
- Per the phabricator:T388080 ticket, please ensure these and all of your future banners are compatible with the Mediawiki dark-mode settings.
- Also, please make sure to specify the campaign type in the drop down in the campaign settings to allow people to filter through their preferences the types of campaigns they see.
- Don't forget to list your campaign in the calendar and coordinate with others that might be targeting the same country/projects/languages. Currently the banner for International Women's Days is also running in the USA.
Best, Ciell (talk) 14:49, 6 March 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks, just noticed this now. I believe we've now addressed the issues that have been raised. Pharos (talk) 16:46, 9 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Ciell, @Pharos I'm sorry, but the new "dark-mode" supported banner has low contrast ratio (2.66:1) and fails WCAG 2.0 standard of at least 3:1 for web accessibility. The background grey has to brighten up to #CCCCC at the minimum to create sufficient contrast. OhanaUnitedTalk page 18:10, 11 March 2025 (UTC)
- Pharos has fixed the background colour, thank you. In the future, between a user preference (dark mode) and an accessibility requirement, accessibility requirement must take precedence. OhanaUnitedTalk page 14:47, 12 March 2025 (UTC)

A CentralNotice is the banner (front-end visual) + the campaign (technical settings): therefore, if your FunTech Team is going to create the campaigns themselves, I'd like to see the campaign and the technical settings before you enable. Ciell (talk) 17:53, 14 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Ciell I would not mind If you would create the campaign, but at the moment I am not sure if this is last approved version of the banners; to my understanding there have been some code changes after the first implementation. Therefore I am still waiting for this info. – So let me either get back to you either with the campaign settings of the FunTech Team or the go ahead, that you can create the campaign :) Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 07:47, 17 March 2025 (UTC)
- I am not 'big' for coding: if you'd like a full review I can ask another CN admin to do that. But because you choose to run a customized banner it is your responsibility to test it across all platforms. I just want to see the final banner and the campaign settings - I can do this myself if you prefer, but might not have time available before the weekend. Ciell (talk) 15:43, 18 March 2025 (UTC)
- I have no expectations that you will check the banners :) I realize that this is within our scope! - Unfortunately, I still don't know whether the current banners have been implemented. - At the moment I'm still hoping that WMDE/I will make progress here by 24.03. and that you can then release the campaign for the planned run (last minute).
- With every hour that passes, I assume that we will have to postpone the campaign period.
- Thank you very much for your work and availability despite the current situation. Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 13:43, 20 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Ciell
- I have an update \o/:
- I have now moved the start of the campaign back a day, so that ideally there will be less stress for you when it comes to the approval! Have a wonderful weekend! Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 15:44, 20 March 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for the updates, @Merle von Wittich (WMDE)! I have reviewed and enabled the campaign, the banner should go live tomorrow morning. Ciell (talk) 12:31, 24 March 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you! <3 Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 13:28, 24 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Merle von Wittich (WMDE) one more question: I notice your fun-team has set up the campaign including a sample rate of 1 for legacy hiding and impressions. I have never come across a sample rate like this, and learned (the hard way) that WMF sometimes uses history logging samples at a rate of 0,01%. Is your team sure a sample rate of 1 makes sense, and does WMF agree with it being used like this? Ciell (talk) 13:31, 24 March 2025 (UTC)
- I have to forward that question to @Kai Nissen (WMDE). Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 13:34, 24 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Ciell: Actually, this is something we set for all of the fundraising campaigns we run and it's part of the "muscle memory" when setting up the campaign. It dates back to a Central Notice introduction I received when I started working at WMDE in 2011. Thinking about it now, I'm sure we don't need to set a sampling rate at all, so I'll disable it. We measure banner interaction (and also banner display) using Event Platform. Kai Nissen (WMDE) (talk) 17:25, 24 March 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for explaining @Kai Nissen (WMDE)! Interesting that you received information about this during the onboarding almost 14 years ago: the Help:CentralNotice does not mention the 'special features' options, and I sometimes feel a bit in the dark on how the can be used. The small paragraph about banner history logging was only added recently. I'd love to learn more about this, if you ever have the time to write your experience down. Ciell (talk) 19:03, 24 March 2025 (UTC)

[edit]I am sorry for the late request, we will do our best to request the next banners 14 days before as per the rules. We are currently discussing the possibility of my banner admin request to take WMCZ banners out of your hands. Best, --janbery (talk) 16:10, 19 January 2025 (UTC)

[edit]- @Janbery:
- Shame on the late request! ;P Two kinds of feedback: The text is longer than in many other banners, is that intended? In my mobile preview, the “Zjistit více” button disappeared which removes the call-to-action; I don't think that this is a good solution.
- Anyway, you can find the campaign and banner (preview). Please check everything, approve it and ping me so that I can enable the campaign.
- For the second part of the campaign, please either ping me/the CN admins here or start a new request. We cannot set multiple dates and cannot promise that we don't forget to update the dates. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 10:32, 21 January 2025 (UTC)

- @DerHexer: Hello, it looks good, thank you! I made the text shorter as you suggested, please see the updated code. Best, janbery (talk) 21:51, 29 January 2025 (UTC)

[edit]@Johannnes89: could you please check this again? best --Christian Philipp (WMAT) (talk) 10:57, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the ping @Christian Philipp (WMAT)! We appreciate if @Manfred Werner (WMAT) creates the campaign & banner via the CentralNotice interface, once Meta:Requests for CentralNotice adminship/Manfred Werner (WMAT) is successful. It just needs approval from volunteer CN admins per CentralNotice/Usage guidelines#Policies for Affiliates and WMF Staff, but can be created & managed by yourself.
- Per CentralNotice/Usage guidelines campaigns running longer than two weeks usually require community approval. Even if this is an established campaign, the unusually long duration should be discussed with the de(-AT) community.
- Personally I think the duration might be ok, if the banner is running on a low impression diet and with limited traffic, in order to make sure it doesn't annoy editors (and readers) again and again for many weeks... Johannnes89 (talk) 18:40, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
@Johannnes89: @Christian Philipp (WMAT): I have written a notification to the community on de.wikipedia for this banner and also for the second campaign in January (CentralNotice/Request/GLAM digital spring) at Wikipedia:Projektdiskussion. As I am new to this I am not sure how to ask for approval from volunteer CN admins (I could ping some from the list of admins, but I don't know who is active). --Manfred Werner (WMAT) (talk) 12:56, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks. You can create both the banner as well as the campaign via the CN admin interface. Once you link the created campaign & banner on this page, volunteer CN admins can take a look. If no-one reacts, you can ping one of the active CN admins mentioned at CentralNotice/Request, preferably (or Ciell who is not on the list, but also active and very helpful as well). Johannnes89 (talk) 19:06, 11 December 2024 (UTC)
I have changed the start date of the campaign in January from 1st to 7th, also talked about it with Christian. It's because I am on vacation around new year's eve and have very limited internet access in this time, so it would be difficult to act if there are issues with the banner or the campaign. --Manfred Werner (WMAT) (talk) 13:22, 16 December 2024 (UTC)
@Manfred Werner (WMAT): Banner is activated, thanks. There was a problem last year with the banner conflicting with coordinates at the upper right corner of a page (difficult to see, not clickable), which I thought, I have fixed by adding some extra empty space below the banner. But obviously this does not work. Do you have a better idea to fix this? best --Christian Philipp (WMAT) (talk) 10:03, 7 January 2025 (UTC)

[edit]The campaign settings have been set [12] and the banner created [13]. CN admins, please take a look and let me know if it is alright like this. It's the first time I created a CN. Thank you! --Manfred Werner (WMAT) (talk) 15:36, 13 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Martin Urbanec:@Vermont: Hi, as I am new to this and also that kind of CN admin who is here in the role of a representative of an affiliate, I need and would like to ask you to take a look at the two campaigns I have set up - if they are alright (also technically, I am not sure about the close button here) and can be activated. Thank you! --Manfred Werner (WMAT) (talk) 17:37, 18 December 2024 (UTC)
- Looks good to me. I don't see a close button in the CN interface preview for some reason, but it works in the onwiki preview [14].
- Restarting the banner cycle every week effectively means users will see the banner 12 times which seems a bit much to me. I suggest either limiting it to two impressions per cycle (= 8 total impressions in 3,5 weeks) or extending the cycle a bit, e.g. to 67435200 seconds (1.5 weeks -> 9 total impressions). Johannnes89 (talk) 11:49, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you! I have reduced the maximum impressions to two.
- So, I am just asking again because I am new to this, what should be done now? Will someone activate the campaign?
- There is also another one I created that should have begun today, CentralNotice/Request/GLAM digital spring, but is still marked as open. --Manfred Werner (WMAT) (talk) 16:46, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks, I've activated the campaign, giving my approval as a volunteer CN admin.
- I suggest trying to ping volunteer CN admins again for the GLAM request (those without ties to WMF or affiliates like WMDE). Perhaps checking the different CN logs [15] helps finding someone active. The backlog at CNR suggests, that most volunteer CN admins are currently busy, but given that it's just about approving the banner + campaign you created, there should be somebody who can spend 5 minutes to do that. Johannnes89 (talk) 18:23, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks, I've activated the campaign, giving my approval as a volunteer CN admin.

[edit]We'd like to continue the campaign from last year (request). The banner will only be running for two days before the first Wednesday of each month, and will be targeted to users with less than 100 edits.
I can handle the administration of this banner myself, no intervention necessary from other CN admins. :-) Jon Harald Søby (WMNO) (talk) 13:12, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
