First quarter report (Jan-Mar)

Addressing the Lusophone technological wishlist proposals with the Outreachy program

Dead link checker sample

Wiki Movimento Brasil has relied on the Outreachy program to implement technological requests from the Lusophone community. A program offering paid internships and support for underrepresented groups in the tech industry, Outreachy is an opportunity for interns to develop skills while contributing to open-source software. This activity is aligned with WMB's strategy under the axis of "(Re)imagining the socio-technical infrastructure of the Wikimedia Movement". Our aim in this program was to address a proposal from the Lusophone Technological Wishlist utilizing this space and resource.

In this context, we have successfully implemented an open version of the Dead Link Finder tool, capable of identifying broken external links on Wikimedia project pages.[1] With this project we have resolved the request that garnered the highest engagement in the Lusophone Technological Wishlist last year. The Outreachy program addressed the basic requirement of the request.[2]

Launching the Global Majority Wikimedia Technology Priorities

Cover for the WikiMove podcast episode

Wiki Movimento Brasil (WMB) and the Centre for Internet and Society - Access to Knowledge (CIS-A2K) have worked on a research project to identify and address the technology priorities of the Wikimedia Global Majority.[3] This initiative aims to create a multi-stakeholder action process to support these priorities. Our goal is to lead and collaborate with the global community to develop products and technologies that meet the needs of the Global Majority.[4]

The project aligns with WMB's strategy under the axis "(Re)imagine the sociotechnical infrastructure of the Wikimedia Movement." In this axis, it aligns specifically on "Research and identify needs of the Wikimedia Movement that can be addressed by developing or improving tools", "Collaborate with the Wikimedia Movement and with external stakeholders to develop open technologies that share the strategic direction of knowledge as a service" and "Act from a Global South perspective for global Wikimedia Movement discussions about access, user experience and innovation across platforms".

Through this research, we gathered diverse perspectives from Global Majority communities on their technology infrastructure needs, listed these priorities, and proposed changes and approaches for execution. In collaboration with various organizations and individuals, we identified ten major goals and challenges related to the Wikimedia Movement's socio-technical infrastructure and advocated for their prioritization within the Movement's activity plans.[3]

Wikidata IOLab

Wikidata IOLab session at the International Linguistics Olympiad in Brasília

Wikidata Labs are capacity-building workshops designed to train participants in integrating Wikidata with other Wikimedia projects, software, tools, and processes. The training was volunteer-led, with support and resources provided by WMB, which relates to our strategic directions to encourage community health through new communication spaces and integration between experienced volunteers, new contributors, cultural, educational, social organizations and other partners of open knowledge.

Wikidata IOLab took place during the 2024 International Linguistics Olympiad in Brasília.[5] Participants were taught how to edit language phonemes using a thematic app created for the event.[6] This collaboration with IOL and OBL enriched language-related information on Wikimedia projects. On the qualitative side, the participants were actively engaged and introduced to the open knowledge ecosystem. Quantitatively, 194 editors registered, with 206 people participating synchronously during the event, resulting in over 400 edits on 35 phonemes items on Wikidata.[7]

Wiki Movimento Brasil in the Wikidata Days Lisbon 2024

Presentation 'Wiki Movimento Brasil e projetos Wikidata em contexto GLAM'

The Wiki Movimento Brasil (WMB) participated in the Wikidata Days Lisboa 2024, an event focused on GLAM professionals and academics exploring Wikidata's potential in open data management. Held in November at the National Library of Portugal, the WMB team delivered two presentations and a training session, aligning with their strategic objectives of strengthening documentation culture and identifying the needs of the Portuguese-speaking community.

The activity aimed to share WMB's methodologies, processes, tools, and solutions for Wikimedia project contributions while expanding their professional network. During the event, WMB presented their approach to using Wikidata in GLAM-Wiki projects,[8] provided an introductory overview of Wikidata,[9] and conducted a workshop on QuickStatements and OpenRefine.[10] The outcomes included valuable knowledge exchange and the strengthening of connections with Wikimedia affiliates and institutions in the Portuguese-speaking region.
