Report of activities for 2024 - GLAMs and Culture
First quarter report (Jan-Mar)
A GLAM focus in Rio de Janeiro
WMB launched in September last year a specific GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) partnership strategy to attract new institutions to the Wikimedia Movement in Rio de Janeiro and as a consequence has significantly expanded our GLAM network in this city. This initiative aligns with WMB's strategy of "Fostering and diversifying partnerships for free knowledge in Brazil" in our 2023-2025 Strategic Plan. The main objective is to establish partnerships with institutions of different sizes and themes, aiming not only to increase the number of uploaded collections but also to address knowledge gaps and connect institutions more strongly with our local volunteer community.
We have established partnerships with prominent institutions, including Laboratório de Conservação de Documentos da UFFRJ,[1] Instituto de Pesquisa e Memória Pretos Novos,[2] Casa Museu Eva Klabin,[3] Carnavalize[4] and Museu da Umbanda.[5] We have sustained 15 partners in Rio de Janeiro.
Second quarter report (Apr-Jun)
Midiateca Capixaba open licensing guide
In December 2022, WMB, the Secretary of Culture of the State of Espírito Santo and InternetLab launched the project "Open Midiateca: Licensing and analysis of collections of Midiateca Capixaba", to create an open licensing policy for GLAM institutions within the Midiateca Capixaba network.[6]
The project resulted in a document detailing key definitions of Brazilian copyright law, including limitations, exceptions, and guidelines for digital collection availability on Wikimedia platforms.[7] This guide, a pioneering effort in simplifying copyright laws for Brazilian professionals in GLAM institutions, was created after analyzing 8,292 items from ten Espírito Santo GLAM institutions and will help GLAM institutions nationwide to contribute their collections to the open knowledge ecosystem.[6] [7] [8]
This initiative aligns with WMB's strategy to foster and diversify partnerships for open knowledge in Brazil, specifically the direction of establishing an action of advocacy for the protection and outreach of open knowledge in Brazil, at the pace it addresses legal uncertainties that hinder GLAM institutions from openly licensing their collections.[9] The project aims to help GLAM staff make Espírito Santo state collections available under open licenses on online platforms like Midiateca Capixaba and Wikimedia projects.
Third quarter report (Jul-Sep)
Amazonian Knowledge on Wiki
"Amazonian Knowledge on Wiki" is a project led by Wiki Movimento Brasil, with support from Creative Commons and Wikimedia CH. Its goal is to share information about the biodiversity of the Pará region in the Amazon. The initiative aligns with WMB's strategy to promote knowledge equity, as Pará was identified as one of the Brazilian states with limited representation on Wikimedia platforms and thus, subject of the Wiki Loves Pará initiative in 2023.
The first activity of the project took place in late August, involving 20 geoscience professionals and students in an event for open, collaborative mapping and documentation of the Zoobotanical Park at the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi.[10] The objective was to improve the park's georeferencing, including its entry points, ancient trees, and buildings. Both the museum and the group Meninas da Geo expressed interest in future collaborations, signaling the potential for long-term partnerships.
Fourth quarter report (Oct-Dec)
New horizons for Wiki Loves Monuments Brasil 2024
Wiki Loves Monuments Brasil has been organized annually by WMB since 2019. Every year, in the month of September, we receive thousands of photographs registering the Brazilian built heritage. In 2024, we received more than 28 thousand images from 25 Brazilian states (out of 27), contributed by 283 photographers, with 185 of them being newcomers to the photography contest. Together, those photographers managed to illustrate a little less than 2,500 monuments, half of which were illustrated for the first time in the Wikimedia projects.[11]
This year we invested into a new outreach strategy, with the organization of synchronous photowalks events in several cities throughout the country. The cities were distributed in the whole country, including several states capitals, such as Porto Alegre, Curitiba, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Natal, São Luís, Belém, Goiânia, Campo Grande and Cuiabá.[11]
