  • The #SheSaid campaign is in its final month, concluding on December 31st 2024! This 5th edition has already seen impressive contributions with around 7000 articles created or improved.   • The hosts for the upcoming Wiki Indaba conferences have been announced. The Wiki Indaba 2025 conference will take place in the Republic of Congo, hosted by the Wikimedians of Republic of Congo User Group, from 7-9 November 2025. The 2026 conference will be hosted by Wikimedia Cote d’Ivoire in the Ivory Coast, and the 2027 edition will be held in Tanzania, hosted by the Wikimedia Community User Group Tanzania. Information on scholarship application and program proposal submission will be communicated in due time.
  • Please welcome Willy Buloso, the new Senior Program Officer for Sub-Saharan Africa. Willy brings a wealth of experience from ECPAT International, where he served as Regional Coordinator for Sub-Saharan Africa. With expertise in education, human rights, and community-led initiatives, Willy is passionate about advancing the movement's goals. Based in Nairobi, Kenya, he looks forward to connecting with grantee partners, learning about their work, and providing support.
  • Wikicelebrate celebrates Chabota Isaac Kanguya who was honoured during the year-end edition of Afrika Baraza, a platform for African Wikimedians to connect and collaborate. Starting his Wikimedia journey in 2011, Chabota's resilience and dedication have resulted in over 27,000 edits, amplifying Zambian and African narratives globally.   • The deadline for Wiki Loves Africa Rapid Grants applications is December 1st, 2024. These grants provide funding for local organisers to plan events supporting the 2025 photographic contest. If you’re planning photo walks, edit-a-thons, or other community engagement events, don't miss the chance to secure funding.   • The 7th edition of WikiChallenge Ecoles d'Afrique, a writing competition for students aged 8-13 in French speaking Africa, launches on January 2nd, 2024. Organised by Orange Foundation and Wiki in Africa, the competition will span 12 countries, including new participants Liberia and Botswana . Recognised for outstanding contributions to Open Education, the WikiChallenge continues to empower young learners across the continent
  • Wikimania 2025 is heading to Nairobi, Kenya, for its 20th anniversary with the theme “Wikimania@20: Inclusivity. Impact. Sustainability.” Scholarships are now open until 8th December 2024, covering travel, accommodation, and registration for the conference happening 6th-9th August 2025.   • The annual Wikimedia Hackathon will take place in Istanbul, Tukey from 2nd May to May 4th 2025. This in person event, organised by the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia Community User Group Turkey invites participants to collaborate, learn and innovate together. Scholarships covering travel and accommodation are available for eligible participants until December 10th, 2024.   • Wikimédia France is hosting PatrolConf on Saturday, November 30th, 2024, from 1.pm to 5 p.m UTC via videoconference. This event is designed to enhance skills of patrollers on French Wikipedia. Registration and further details are available here.
  • Volunteer committees play a vital role in the Wikimedia community, offering leadership and support through various roles such as administrators, advisors, and stewards. Several committees are seeking new volunteers including the Ombuds commission, and Case Review Committee. Applications are open with the deadline being December 2nd. For more details, click here.
  • The Wiki Women* Task Force, formerly the Wiki Women* Collective, is forming a global steering committee to drive initiatives aimed at closing the gender gap on Wikimedia projects. The nomination process has been extended to December 10, 2024, to ensure diverse regional, linguistic, gender, sexual orientation, and ability representation. If you’re passionate about advancing gender equity and have the skills and experience to contribute, we encourage you to apply.   • The Wikimedia Foundation’s audited financial statements for the fiscal year end June 30. 2024 are now available. This marks 19 consecutive years of clean audits for the Foundation. Additionally, the inaugural report for the standalone Wikimedia Endowment and the Enterprise financial report for the same period has been released.

  • Help enhance the visibility of the amazing images from the Wiki Loves Africa: Africa Creates campaign using the ISA Tool! From October 1st to November 30th, you can participate in this fun, multilingual campaign to add structured data to over 14,000 images. Prizes include internet bundles or Amazon gift cards!   • The annual Open Education Awards for Excellence recognises outstanding contributions in the Open Education community. One exciting finalist is the WikiChallenge Ecoles d'Afrique, a writing competition for students aged 8-13 in French-speaking African countries, organised by Orange Foundation and Wiki in Africa. The project engages students and educators in sharing knowledge about their local environments.
  • Volunteer committees play a vital role in the Wikimedia community, offering leadership and support through various roles such as administrators, advisors, and stewards. Several committees are seeking new volunteers from October to December 2024, including the Affiliations Committee (AffCom), Ombuds Commission, and Case Review Committee.   • The 2024 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees election saw 6000 participants across 180 projects. The top four candidates, Christel Steigenberger, Maciej Artur Nadzikiewicz, Victoria Doronina, and Lorenzo Losa, will be officially appointed after a successful background check.   • Wiki Loves Ramadan is calling for passionate volunteers to fill key roles for its global campaign.   • Wiki Loves Monuments 2024 is in full swing, marking the 15th edition of this annual photography competition. This year, two new countries, Cyprus and Libya, have joined the many returning nations participating. The international competition runs until October 31st, 2024, and encourages photographers to submit their best photos of monuments from participating countries. To be eligible for prizes, photos must be self-taken, uploaded in September or October, freely licensed, and feature an identified monument. Participants must also have an active email address on Wikimedia Commons.
  • As we conclude Wiki Loves Folklore 2024 and the Feminism and Folklore 2024 Campaign 2024, we invite you to share your experiences by completing the feedback form by November 10, 2024. Your input will help shape the future of these campaigns.

  • The jury for the 2024 Wiki Loves Africa photography competition has selected its shortlist, showcasing the best images that celebrate Africa’s cultures, landscapes, and people. You can check out the stunning shortlisted photos in a special video on our YouTube channel
  • The Africa Wiki Challenge team is thrilled to announce the winners of the 4th Africa Wiki Challenge, themed "Educate Africa: Nurturing minds for the 21st century." Congratulations to the overall winner, User:DaSupremo, and all other deserving winners! Special thanks to the international jury and all 1,230 editors who contributed to this year's success.
  • Wikimania 2024 in Katowice, Poland, wrapped up on August 10th, with many sessions live-streamed and now available on the Wikimedia Foundation YouTube channel. Sustainable Development Goals were a key focus, and we’re excited to announce that Wikimania 2025 will be held in Nairobi, Kenya, followed by Paris, France in 2026.
  • User:Graineahumus proposed a new project called Wikiwebsites—a "Library of Free Projects" covering art, science, architecture, and more, all under Creative Commons and other open licences. Your feedback is welcome.
  • The Charts Project has officially kicked off to enhance data visualisation on MediaWiki. This initiative focuses on updating the Chart extension, which lets users create and embed charts and graphs within wiki pages. The project aims to restore and improve these visualisation tools.   • The Campaigns Product & Programs teams have launched a new consultation to explore WikiProjects and other collaborative efforts on wikis. They seek to understand their effectiveness and gather feedback on how to improve these experiences. Your input is encouraged and valued.
  • Wikimedia is excited to participate in Round 29 of the Outreachy program, running from December 2024 through March 2025. Outreachy offers paid, remote internships aimed at supporting underrepresented groups in tech. If you have project ideas, whether coding or non-coding, submit them by September 11th.   • Update on Wikimania 2024 Programming Call for Proposals. All applicants have been notified of their submission outcomes. Please check your email (including spam folders).   • The Core Organizing Team invites you to register for Wikimania 2024. Key Dates to note: In-person event registration deadline: 26 July 2024. Online event registration: Open anytime. Event Details: Dates: 7–10 August 2024. Location: Katowice International Conference Centre (in-person) and Eventyay (online).
  • The Wiki Student Summit 2024 took place from July 16th to 18th in Arusha, Tanzania, gathering students from various backgrounds for discussions, workshops and networking.   • The Wikimedia Community Resources Team is pleased to announce the upcoming Rapid Fund and General Support Fund cycles for the fiscal year from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025. Rapid Fund Timelines:
    • Mid-July: Information on changes to the Rapid Fund program, aligned with WMF’s Annual Plan for 2024/2025, will be shared.
    • Fiscal Year 2024-2025: There will be 5 Rapid Fund Cycles. Timelines are available on Meta-Wiki. Campaign leaders should ensure their campaigns are listed and notify the team if any are missing. The Rapid Fund's budget portion will be announced by the second half of July.
    • General Support Funds Timelines: Timelines for General Support Funds rounds are published on Meta-Wiki. Note that some regions will have different deadlines for simple renewals versus new applications.
  • Florence, a dedicated member of the Wikimedia community for 22 years, was recently interviewed for the summer edition of Vikidia's newsletter. In the interview, she shares her extensive experience and insights gained from her involvement in the Wikimedia community. She also discusses the WikiChallenge Ecoles d'Afrique, a writing contest aimed at engaging African school children in contributing to Wikipedia.
  • On July 13th, Arabic Wikipedia volunteers celebrated the 20th Arabic Wikipedia Day. The preparation for that day started around 6 months ago by a core team selected from the Arabic community. On the day itself, Individuals and user groups united to enhance Arabic content on Wikipedia through various activities. Additionally, Dr. Yahia Mer Alam from the Arab Academy of Damascus conducted a live course on Arabic writing skills, with the help of some Arabic Wikipedia volunteers. The course is now available on YouTube for anyone interested in improving their writing.

  • We are excited to announce WikiConference Nigeria 2024, the national event for Nigerian Wikimedia contributors. This inaugural conference, taking place from September 12-15, 2024, in Abuja, Nigeria, offers a platform to learn, connect, and share experiences within the Wikimedia community.   • The #WikiForHumanRights campaign aims to provide access to neutral, fact-based information on human rights and sustainability, including the Right to a Healthy Environment. In honour of the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Wikimedia communities are invited to contribute knowledge that helps create a sustainable future.   • Join the Wiki Loves Earth 2024 Photography Contest. Capture and share stunning photos of local natural heritage and scenic landscapes from May 1 to July 31. Organised by Wikimedia chapters, this international competition invites participants to upload their images to Wikimedia Commons.   • The Wiki Loves Women team is thrilled to announce the 5th edition of the #SheSaid campaign! Last year’s success saw 5555 new articles and 1766 improved articles across 18 languages.   • The upcoming Language Community meeting is on May 31st at 16:00 UTC. Sign up here.   • The Community Tech team will release a refreshed Community Wishlist Survey with “Focus Areas” on July 15, 2024. This approach allows developers to address multiple wishes by solving underlying problems. The wishlist will remain open year-round, allowing volunteers to submit, review, edit and discuss wishes in any language without needing to know Wikitext.   • Want to change Wikipedia? Apply to be a candidate for the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees election by 23:59 UTC on May 29, 2024. Four Trustees will be elected this year.   • The Call for proposals for the 2024 Francophone WikiConvention is extended until May 31. Submit your communications from April 15 to May 31. The event will be held in Quebec City, Canada with public conferences on November 2-3 and pre-conferences for scholarship recipients on October 31-November 1. Proposals can include project presentations, case studies, workshops, panels and more on themes such as governance, education, GLAM, equity and environment.   • Exciting News from the Ombuds Commission: The recently concluded application period for new commissioners for 2024-2026 has been announced. The Wikimedia Foundation expresses gratitude to the dedicated volunteers stepping forward to contribute. This committee will comprise thirteen members and one Steward-Oberver.

  • The Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee Charter has been officially ratified! A total of 1746 contributors participated in the vote, with 1249 expressing support for the Charter. The democratic process also allowed for valuable comments, offering insights and perspectives.   • Wiki Indaba 2024 is set for October 4–6 in Johannesburg, South Africa. The Wiki Indaba 2024 team invites volunteers to join the Scholarship Committees. Applications are now open until March 15th. Notification of successful applicants is March 20th.

  • The Wiki Loves Africa 2024 international media contest theme has been announced. The 10th edition will hold under the theme, Africa Create. All intending local organisers have until 1st November 2023 to apply for a rapid grant.
  • The Wiki Science Competition 2023, an international photo contest for the sciences, launches on 1st November. Entries are welcome until 15th December 2023. Please participate.
  • The Wiki Loves Women 2023 SheSaid campaign has kicked off as of 1st October and will run on Wikiquote until 31st December. Make sure you participate in documenting quotable quotes from women across the world.
  • WikidataCon 2023, the conference dedicated to the #Wikidata community, is taking place on October 28-29, online all around the world and onsite in Taipei. You can now register for the conference!
  • Registration for the GLAM Wiki 2023 conference happening in Montevideo, Uruguay on 16th, 17th and 18th November, is now open. Please register for the conference.
  • You’re invited to review and comment on the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees selection rules package until 29 October 2023. The selection rules package was based on older versions by the Elections Committee and will be used in the 2024 Board of Trustees selection. The rules package includes campaign rules, voter eligibility criteria, and the voting method, platform and timeline.
  • The CEO of the Wikimedia Foundation, Maryana Iskander has once again shared some very important updates with the Wikimedia community. Remember to read the update. She has also invited us to sign up for on- and off-wiki options between October and February, including individual conversations with herself, Trustees, and other Foundation leaders.
  • The Afrika Baraza working group is inviting, for the second time, all members of the African Wikimedia community to review the Africa Agenda draft and provide feedback. The draft is available in English, Swahili and French. Please review and provide feedback if you haven’t done that.

  • The Wiki Loves Monuments 2023 contest has launched for this year’s edition. Please endeavor to participate in documenting monuments and heritage across Africa and beyond. Entries are welcome until 31st October 2023.
  • The WikiIndaba 2023 Core Organizing Team is inviting Wikimedia communities across Africa to apply for micro-grants of up to $300 for local community events happening in sync with the conference in Morocco. The application deadline is October 8, 2023.
  • WikidataCon 2023, the conference dedicated to the #Wikidata community, is taking place on October 28-29, online all around the world and onsite in Taipei. You can now register for the conference!
  • The WikiWomenCamp Core Organizing Team invites you to submit short (3-5 minute) videos highlighting your projects, initiatives, or efforts that have made a significant difference in addressing gender gaps.   • The Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C) draft charter is now ready for your review. The U4C Building Committee is inviting feedback about the draft charter. The deadline is 22nd September 2023.
  • Do you want to help spread knowledge about OpenRefine, and support Wikimedians and their partners by using OpenRefine to contribute to Wikimedia Commons and other Wikimedia projects? Then you should apply for the OpenRefine-Wikimedia train-the-trainer online course which will run from November 2023 until April 2024. You can apply until 15th September 2023 to join the course.
  • The Wikimania 2023 Core organising team would like you to take a survey if you participated in person or online. Respond to the survey to share what worked well and what could be improved.
  • The EduWiki Conference 2024 core team would like your input on this annual conference. Fill out the survey to shape the next EduWiki Conference.
  • Wikimedia is participating in Outreachy Round 27 internship program. Outreachy's goal is to support people from groups underrepresented in the technology industry. Interns will work remotely with mentors from our community. Mentors are invited to propose projects that Outreachy interns can work on during their internship.   • The Movement Charter Drafting Committee (MCDC) has concluded its first community review of the methodology draft, which will be used to ratify the Movement Charter in 2024. The timeline of the next steps of the methodology is provided too. The Movement Charter Drafting Committee will incorporate the feedback and share an updated version of the ratification methodology in August 2023.

  • Save the date for this year’s LD4 Conference on Linked Data: July 10th through July 14th, 2023.   • Wiki Loves Earth 2023 international photo contest has started, and announced the special nomination “Human rights and environment”! In 2023, Wiki Loves Earth international photo contest again supports the initiative WikiForHumanRights, which partners with the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). Its goal is to raise awareness of nature protection and human impacts on nature. When we protect the environment, we also protect the fundamental human rights we all have rights to water, life, food, housing, and other fundamental rights that rely on a clean, healthy environment. And this year, the contest accepts photos not only from the countries where the main contest is going but also from the whole world! It run twice a year–from May to August and December to March.   • Wikimania 2021 team has given updates regarding language support. With the new changes, speakers will not need to provide an English transcription for their pre-recorded sessions.

  • The Wikimania scholarship program is now open until 30th July 2021. This year, scholarships will only be issued to Affiliate Organisations, who will then distribute to their respective community members. Read more here
  • The WikiIndaba Steering Committee in conjunction with Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda have announced that WikiIndaba 2021 will be hosted virtually from 5th-7th November 2021. The team would like to understand people’s preferences for this virtual edition, so you can fill this survey by clicking here before 30th June 2021.
  • The Art and Feminism Call for artists to create an original, open-license work which helps to visualize #ArtAndFeminism is open. Up to two selected applicants will receive a 2000$ (USD) artist fee each for their work. This is to celebrate the Global South. The call is limited to artists located in regions where the curators of the call reside: African countries, Brazil, India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Deadline is August 16 2021. Learn more here

  • This year, a total of 45 communities will be organizing the 2021 WPWP campaign from about 40 countries. The campaign starts on the 1st of July and closes on the 31st of August 2021.
  • The Wikimania 2021 Pre-conference is going to be held in Tanzania. It’s scheduled for a Saturday and Sunday, either the third week of July or first week of August 2021.
