Celebrate African Women!

Celebrating African Women in Wikimedia is a special meetup and edit-a-thon dedicated to highlighting the contributions of African women in the Wikimedia movement. As part of the International Women’s Day celebrations, we will come together to share inspiring stories, exchange experiences, and collaborate on a weeklong effort to update citizenship data on women's biographies. This initiative aims to improve representation and ensure that women's contributions and identities are accurately documented on Wikimedia platforms. Join us as we celebrate, connect, and make an impact

Why does this matter?

Updating citizenship statements on Wikidata is crucial because it directly impacts the accuracy and representation of women’s biographies across Wikimedia projects. Platforms like Humaniki, which analyze gender gaps in Wikipedia biographies, rely on structured data from Wikidata to assess diversity and inclusion. Without accurate citizenship data, many women’s biographies may be underrepresented or misclassified, leading to skewed statistics on gender and regional representation.

Additionally, citizenship data plays a key role in knowledge equity—ensuring that notable women from diverse backgrounds are properly recognized and credited for their contributions. It also strengthens data-driven advocacy for closing the gender gap in Wikimedia, helping researchers and activists push for more inclusive representation in global knowledge repositories.
