- WK? Whose Knowledge?
Whose Knowledge? is a global campaign that centers the knowledges of marginalized communities (the majority of the world) online, including in Wikimedia projects.
The Whose Knowledge? user group is open to all people – particularly those who identify as women, LGBTQI folks, people from the global South, and allies around the world – who are interested in addressing systemic bias on Wikimedia projects.
To join the user group, add your name below! And check out our volunteers page to signup for upcoming projects.
Bo̍k-piau
We are a global campaign partnering with individuals, communities, movements, user groups and other organisations worldwide to create, collect and curate knowledge from and with marginalised communities, particularly women, people of colour, LGBTQI communities, indigenous peoples and others from the global South.
Ua̍h-tāng
We are building bridges between Wikimedia communities that are aiming to address systemic bias on Wikimedia projects, and the individuals, communities, organisations and movements worldwide that hold marginalized forms of knowledge still missing from Wikimedia projects.
We do this by:
- Mapping opportunities and gaps in online knowledge
- Capturing data about systemic bias in content and participation on Wikimedia projects
- Collecting and curating resources and toolkits for addressing systemic bias
- Supporting content-creation and participation pilots
- Convening diverse stakeholders from both inside and outside the Wikimedia movement
- Media campaigns to encourage diverse forms of engagement, participation, and content creation

Li̍k-sú
The Whose Knowledge? campaign was conceived by Anasuya Sengupta over the course of 2015, and co-founded with Siko Bouterse in March 2016. Adele Vrana joined us in November 2017. We bring a unique combination of experiences, skills and approaches to this work: critical feminist scholarship and human rights activism, intersecting with a deep knowledge of internet technologies and online community organizing. Siko has worked with global online communities for over 10 years with an intent to build bridges and empower people to share knowledge. Anasuya has worked in India, the global South, and internationally for over 20 years, leading initiatives to amplify voices 'from the margins'. Adele has led business development and partnerships initiatives to help build a more plural and diverse communities in her native country of Brazil and globally. We met at the Wikimedia Foundation, where we have been supporting individuals and groups aiming to address systemic bias on Wikimedia projects for five years.
In September 2016, the Whose Knowledge? campaign was publicly launched at the Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID)'s 2016 Forum in Brazil with 5 Wikimujeres(WikiWomen) and nearly 2000 women's human rights defenders. The Wikimujeres delegation was supported by the Wikimedia Foundation. In March 2017, it launched the #VisibleWikiWomen challenge, led by coordinators Mariana Fossati and May Hachem, to bring notable women's pictures onto Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia.
