Mittetulundusühing Wikimedia Eesti is the official local chapter of Wikimedia Foundation in Estonia.
As stated in the bylaws of Wikimedia Eesti, the main objectives of the organization are:
1) To support the collection, preservation and distribution of educational, scientific, cultural and historical data available under a free license, especially in Estonian and Võro languages and make more freely licensed information available about Estonia in other languages.
2) To support and promote projects which are managed by the Wikimedia Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization in the United States.
In our work, we focus mainly on the field of education. We also work heavily on promoting Wikimedia projects in Estonia and put special emphasis on media content (for example we organize international Wiki Science Competition).
For instance, in 2024 we arranged 9 article writing competitions, 4 photo collecting campaigns, and supported one copyediting competition. We held wikiexpeditions, supported students in Wikipedia article writing in schools and universities, arranged multiple gatherings (even the Wikimedia Hackathon was held in Tallinn in May), gave out community awards, and promoted Wikimedia projects. In the public policy work, we focused on SLAPP and FoP.
We partner with many organizations. For instance in the years 2022–2024, we are listed as a strategic partner of the Ministry of Education and Research in Estonia.
We are members of Wikimedia CEE Hub and Wikimedia Europe.
An overview of our activity is provided here.
