Pacha Tchernof (talk) 07:02, 31 January 2022 (UTC)

Hello. I just signed in to Meta and I don't know what to edit. Can you assist me please? I promise to be a good user! ExpositionLaner2835 (talk) 16:24, 2 February 2022 (UTC)

Meta-Wiki is not a final content wiki. You probably rather want to contribute to some Wikimedia projects.
On Meta-Wiki, if you are fluent in another language than English, you may help with translation. -- Pols12 (talk) 18:43, 2 February 2022 (UTC)

Upgrade template

Hello. I think we should migrate Template:Stub and make it translatable. I made Template:Stub/sandbox using {{mbox}}. Could you please take a look? Regards, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 13:55, 26 January 2022 (UTC)

Seems me good. 🙂 I think you can go ahead and implement this new version (but please keep legacy version reachable so we can easily import previous translations). -- Pols12 (talk) 21:10, 31 January 2022 (UTC)
@Pols12: Thank you. I was planning on replacing the code, not deleting the page, so everything can be seen in the template's history (and slowly get those translations imported to the relevant translation subpages). Would you prefer that I move Template:Stub to Template:Stub/old instead? —MarcoAurelio (talk) 17:43, 2 February 2022 (UTC)
Replacing the code is fine, no need to move the page. -- Pols12 (talk) 18:04, 2 February 2022 (UTC)
Done. I'll start manually adding those translations now. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 11:56, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

Translation tags for Celebrate Women pages

Hi, could someone be as kind to help with the translation tags for the four subpages of the landing pages for the International Women Day?

Thanks! Ciell (talk) 11:36, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi @Pppery, Pols12, and 1234qwer1234qwer4:, if you would have time for this request soon, we would be very thankful. I have a CN banner on International Women's Day/Int. Women's Month on hold, waiting for first translations of these pages linked from the landing page of the banner. Ciell (talk) 09:56, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

Please mark page Translation_requests for translation, thanks. Stang 00:23, 16 January 2022 (UTC)

Done I have also moved the page to Meta: namespace; that page still could probably be improved. -- Pols12 (talk) 19:34, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
@Pols12: Do we have to move all subpages of this page to Meta: namespace? Thingofme (talk) 01:21, 26 January 2022 (UTC)
Probably, but I’m not sure: some pages are translations for other wikis.
We could also delete them, since these are outdated translations drafts which have now been moved or copied to their final location. -- Pols12 (talk) 12:27, 26 January 2022 (UTC)
I think this page should be marked as historical, as now we can prepare translate markup (in the past, there is no translate extension). I would move it, except for translatable pages. Thingofme (talk) 12:42, 26 January 2022 (UTC)

Meta:Translation administrators

Could a native speaker explain what "most translators" means in translation unit #6? It does not make much sense for me, IMO it should be just "translators". --jdx Re: 08:58, 11 March 2022 (UTC)

TU #4 – "translators are not toys". Shouldn't it be "translations are not toys"? --jdx Re: 09:21, 11 March 2022 (UTC)
I suppose that means "translators should not be toyed with by making them do useless translations" - useless because the translation-admin will shortly afterwards make changes again that render the translations obsolete already. --MF-W 13:32, 11 March 2022 (UTC)
  • “most translators”: actually, all users can help with translation. Only a little part of them visit regularly Babylon. Actually, this is more a village pump than a noticeboard. But I have no objection to remove “most” as you propose.
  • “toys”: idem MF-W: Translation admins “play” with translatable content, not with translation. So translators are impacted, not directly translations.
-- Pols12 (talk) 18:53, 11 March 2022 (UTC)
Translators will not translate in a loop because another has marked to translate a page several times. This comment follows the self-attribution of status. Agree with the opinions above: "most" can disappear. Cordially. —Eihel (talk) 10:44, 14 March 2022 (UTC)

Translation of global userpage

HEllo! I'm attempting to make it so that if someone views my userpage and their language isn't English, it'll automatically be translated into their own language. I want to know if something like this is possible, and if it is how do I do it? Blaze Wolf (talk) 18:22, 7 March 2022 (UTC)

Also, if this is not the right place to ask this please let me know where to go as it's not immediately obvious to me unlike on enWiki. Blaze Wolf (talk) 18:28, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
I see three possible ways:
  • To create a section per language, your visitors could go to their language from the TOC.
  • To create subpages for each language (User:Blaze_Wolf/de for German, User:Blaze_Wolf/pt for Portugese…) and add {{languages}} to your main user page.
  • To use {{LangSwitch}} inside the main page: the visitors will see the content in same language than the wiki, but they will not be able to see it in another language.
-- Pols12 (talk) 19:00, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
@Pols12: Thanks for replying to me Pols! I would create a section for each language or a subpage for each language, however my issue is that there are far too many languages for me to translate my userpage into each version (admittedly using Google Translate or deepL since the only language I know is English). I would assume there's no template that will translate it automatically? If there isn't one then I"ll probably just choose the top 5 or top 10 most common languages and translate my userpage into those (and possibly add something that says if they don't see their language listed to contact me here on MetaWiki). Blaze Wolf (talk) 19:38, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
No, there isn’t any automatic translation system, you have to translate yourself the content. -- Pols12 (talk) 19:45, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
@Pols12: Alright sounds good. Thank you! Blaze Wolf (talk) 19:48, 7 March 2022 (UTC)

Universal Code of Conduct/Initial 2020 Consultations/Japanese

Please unmark Universal Code of Conduct/Initial 2020 Consultations/Japanese for translation, because there are some oddities that make it not ready for translation. whym (talk) 12:07, 9 March 2022 (UTC)

I have discouraged the translation for now. -- Pols12 (talk) 13:52, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
While that page is being mentioned, someone should deal with the pending unmarked changes (either by reverting them or by marking them and making the corresponding updates to the translated version). * Pppery * it has begun 16:41, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
Last “tweaks” seem me useless, since the main i18n issues remain (e.g. full table inside a unique unit). A full rework woule be nice, but I don’t want to work on this page for now, since we’re waiting for a WMF review (cf talk page). -- Pols12 (talk) 20:44, 10 March 2022 (UTC)
I've reverted the edits and re-marked the page then. * Pppery * it has begun 00:23, 11 March 2022 (UTC)

Dear translation admins,

I have created {{lwp}} which generate an equivalent interwiki for a given Wikipedia page. Previously, we used to recommend to don’t add tvar arround Wikipedia links to allow translators to link to the equivalent page in their language. So we let [[:en:Creative Commons|license]]. I propose to now recommend [[{{lwp|Creative Commons}}|license]].

Main advantage is translation work would be much easier: translators wouldn’t need to open Wikipedia to find the appropriate title in their language. But Wikidata has some limitations (e.g. not always up to date).

What do you think? -- Pols12 (talk) 16:44, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

Shouldn't "ombuds commission" in the first paragraph and the page title be capitalized, as it is later in the text? For me "Ombuds Commission" is a proper name, just like "Board of Trustees" in the first paragraph. --jdx Re: 13:03, 5 April 2022 (UTC)

Translating a page display title

When we translate a page display title (from English to a different language), should we just put the language code at the end or translate the whole title? For example, if I'm translating "Categories:Issues" to Sinhala, should I translate as "Categories:Issues/si" or "ප්‍රවර්ගය:ගැටලු" ? Jacebrent1 (talk) 12:00, 12 April 2022 (UTC)

@Jacebrent1: Just throw away the language code. It is a sign for translators, not for readers. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 13:21, 12 April 2022 (UTC)
There is no real consensus. However, translation admins are able to disable title translation. So, if translation is enabled, you may (should, according to me) freely and fully translate it.
In my opinion, as a translator, you should ensure the full page, including its title, is readable in target language.
There have been some related technical discussions. -- Pols12 (talk) 14:05, 12 April 2022 (UTC)

Could we have Wikimedia_Foundation_Legal_department assigned for translation please? I wish to grasp U4C and other committees related to Trust and Safety per UCoC enforcement: it is to support ja language community who doubts if what vessel(s) which outline is so vague as body(ies) could realistically carry out the tall task of Enforcement Guidelines. Of course, we are forming such body(ies) as we proceed, and I wish when would be the best timing to start sharing the page among multiple languages? Cheers, Omotecho (talk) 11:02, 16 March 2022 (UTC)

I have marked {{Wikimedia Foundation Legal department}}, but main content comes from {{WMF Staff}} (you may use filter input to translate only units on first template). -- Pols12 (talk) 13:10, 16 March 2022 (UTC)
@Pols12, hi, thank you for fast reply. For filtering, I am not sure how to handle that. Will try and open tl:WMF Staff, then query /Legal (?) Omotecho (talk) 13:55, 16 March 2022 (UTC)
In Translate interface, there is an input field in top-right corner with “Filter list” as placeholder. There, you may type e.g. “General Counsel” to find relevant message (i.e. which one displayed on Template:Wikimedia Foundation Legal department). -- Pols12 (talk) 21:21, 16 March 2022 (UTC)
Wonderful to know how to narrow down the translation pair! I have used the very top right input field, which, as you know, the mother group will be the whole meta-universe, too vast to choose from.
I will cherish the gift you gave me, a flash light to see the bigger perspective. So appreciating, it means a lot for an analogue user like me esp a night after a major shake back of 311 Northeast Quake. Thank you so much, Dōmo arigatō, Omotecho (talk) 23:36, 16 March 2022 (UTC)

Translating empty categories

How can I know that I'm creating an empty category in my language before translating the category message? I was translating messages in the 'categories' group from English to Sinhala when I received a notification to refrain from creating empty categories. Jacebrent1 (talk) 06:21, 28 April 2022 (UTC)

I understand this is not very convenient. Yet, you can check whether a category contains any page visiting it. I mean, Category:Global policy proposals/si is a red link, but you’re still able to click on it. Doing so, you will see page and subcategory list. From any category page, you just have to append /si to the URL in your browser address bar.
You may also visit Sinhala pages and looking for red links in bottom category frame. -- Pols12 (talk) 20:11, 28 April 2022 (UTC)

I marked Movement Strategy and Governance/Newsletter/5, WikiIndaba conference 2021/Scholarships and Wikimedia Central and Eastern Europe for translation. Oldest pages proposed for translation

Since my previous listing of the oldest pages with pending changes was helpful at bringing attention to them, let's try a list of the oldest pages proposed for translation. Unlike before, user pages and template sandboxes are not included on this list.

  1. Serbo-Croatian Wikipedia, since April 29, 2021 (is tagged {{draft}})
  2. Training modules/wikidata/library and a bunch of other Wikidata-related training modules pages, since August 2021
  3. Template:WikimediaNEMTable/i18n, since November 9, 2021
  4. Movement Charter/Drafting Committee/Ideas, since November 27, 2021 (is tagged {{draft}})
  5. Movement Strategy/Updates/2021/49, since November 30, 2021 (is tagged {{draft}})
  6. Movement Strategy/Updates/init, since November 30, 2021 (is tagged {{draft}})
  7. Grants:Project/Rapid/Oral citation in Paiwan language, since December 9, 2021
  8. Indic Wikisource Proofreadthon March 2022/Rules, since December 10, 2021 (is tagged {{draft}})
  9. Grants:Project/Rapid/NANöR/Skill Development Needs Assessment For Arabic Wikipedia and Arabic Wikisource, since December 15, 2021
  10. Help:Table, since December 23, 2021
  11. Help:Redirect, since December 31, 2021

It may well be that some of these pages shouldn't be marked for translation (either because they are drafts or because the translate markup was indiscriminately copied from somewhere else), we still shouldn't leave pages sitting around in the backlog for months unattended. * Pppery * it has begun 02:15, 28 March 2022 (UTC)

I frequently check “Pages proposed for translation”.
  • I never mark a page with a {{draft}} or {{under construction}} template, to limit useless work.
  • About training modules, I would like first to work on the software behind them because the supported syntax is limited.
  • I have also skipped Help pages because I think we should take time to merge them into MediaWiki.org, in the same way it has been done for many other help pages.
Note we also have a new issue with grant pages. -- Pols12 (talk) 00:12, 31 March 2022 (UTC)

New list:

  1. Help:Interwiki linking, since January 9
  2. Help:Navigational template, since February 19 (is tagged {{draft}})
  3. Grants:Programs/Wikimedia Alliances Fund/Test-Rapid/Final Report, since March 9
  4. Movement Strategy/Culture of Documentation, since March 15 (is tagged {{draft}})
  5. WikiGap Challenge/Prizes, since March 16 (is tagged {{under construction}})

I am slowly clearing this backlog myself, but if anyone else wants to help out that would be nice. * Pppery * it has begun 19:18, 18 April 2022 (UTC)

Add latin version to

Hello, for the native name of Nogai is "Ногайша" used. But many Nogais in Turkey, Romania and other countries use latin alphabet and I will be happy when there is also the latin version: Nogayşa / Ногайша TayfunEt. (talk) 19:03, 11 May 2022 (UTC)

Nogai language is not supported on Meta-Wiki. Your request should go on Translatewiki.net support.
Though, note the configured script for Nogai is Cyrilic, per initial request. Using Latin for self-name would be inconsistent.
A solution could be to add a nog-latn language, but each page should then be translated twice (for each variant). -- Pols12 (talk) 21:22, 11 May 2022 (UTC)

Page move disaster II

Translation pages not updating after content deletion - T312293

Tracked in Phabricator:
Task T312293

It would appear that once a translation is deleted (e.g. Translations:Mailing lists/Overview/2/id) the corresponding main translatable page (Mailing_lists/Overview/id) is not immediately updated. This is not the usual behaviour, as the JobQueue(?) used to propagate the changes pretty quickly. I've filed task T312293 to inform of this. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 20:31, 6 July 2022 (UTC)

I have a hunch that the issue here is that all language=id translations for that page have been deleted which in turn means that the Translation extension has lost track of the fact that there once were language=id translations which produced Mailing lists/Overview/id. I will add this theory to the phabricator bug report too. -- BDavis (WMF) (talk) 22:02, 6 July 2022 (UTC)

Moving The Africa Narrative to the AfroCreatives WikiProject

Dear Translation Admins,

Please I would love to rename/move https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Africa_Narrative to https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/AfroCreatives_WikiProject while retaining the subpages across the translations it currently exists on.

If you would also deem it fit as per my role as a Wikimedian in Residence at the Africa Narrative to have the translationadmins user-level access, I will be glad.

I appreciate your time in helping out with this and every other thing you do for the Wikimedia projects.

Danidamiobi (talk) 14:11, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

Done, along with subpages The Africa Narrative/Countries and The Africa Narrative/Participate. --MF-W 22:14, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

I've marked the middle two pages for translation. For the first page it's not clear why a list of names needs to be translated, and for the last page it's generally against convention to make talk pages translatable. * Pppery * it has begun 03:42, 5 July 2022 (UTC)
@Pppery Thank you very much.
- The list of people's names are actually the list of local organizers. We still want to replace one more name there and I noticed removing that name was only reflecting on the English translation and not the rest. So if we add or remove a local organizer on the English Meta, we want to be able make that update on the other languages as well.
- For translating talk pages, can you help mark only the text paragraph or could you kindly advice the best practices for multilingual projects of this kind?
I appreciate your time. Danidamiobi (talk) 08:07, 5 July 2022 (UTC)
For the first page: I seem to have misunderstood you; anyway it appears Ameisenigel's already handled it.
For the talk page, I'm not following what you are trying to do. Is your intent just to translate "Have a question? Want to start a discussion? This is the place.", or also to translate talk page comments? If you are doing the former, the typical approach is to have the talk page transclude another translatable page, which I would be happy to set up. * Pppery * it has begun 13:21, 5 July 2022 (UTC)
Thank you so much. I can't stop saying this.
You are spot on. I meant just to translate "Have a question? Want to start a discussion? This is the place."
Please, could you also help me mark this section for translation?
https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=AfroCreatives_WikiProject/Afro_Creatives_WikiProject_%2Bfilm&action=submit#New_to_editing_Wikipedia?
Ameisenigel's has not marked the list of volunteers for translation as we still can't remove #Ceslause# from the list of the volunteers in French and Arabic.
Thank you. Danidamiobi (talk) 15:32, 5 July 2022 (UTC)
I've marked AfroCreatives WikiProject/Afro Creatives WikiProject +film#New to editing Wikipedia? for translation. The rest of what is going on here is too confusing for me, so I'll back out an let another translation admin watching this page handle it. * Pppery * it has begun 17:06, 5 July 2022 (UTC)
The talk page thing needs to be handled with templates, if at all. For now, I'd suggest to refrain from making more pages translatable and instead to focus on actually putting content into them (e.g. AfroCreatives WikiProject/Resources is still empty). --MF-W 12:27, 6 July 2022 (UTC)
I’ve set up Talk:AfroCreatives WikiProject for translation, but reworded the first paragraph to avoid the self-link, and dropped the second one, as thanks to DiscussionTools manually signing the messages should no longer be necessary (at least not for the vast majority of junior users, and seniors should already know to sign their messages). —Tacsipacsi (talk) 21:26, 10 July 2022 (UTC)
Actually, each change in source page must be marked for translation to apply to translation pages, whether it is inside translate tags or outside them. Content inside translate tags should then be manually updated by translators, whereas content outside translate tags is automatically updated by FuzzyBot. That’s why we do not include usernames inside translate tags: this would require translators to manually update each translation page, whereas FuzzyBot could update them automatically. --Pols12 (talk) 21:02, 13 July 2022 (UTC)

Translation moves, again

For reference, I have found yet another failed/incomplete translation move at Wikimedia Slovakia User Group/Reports/2013/Wikimedians of Slovakia/Reports/2013 (see Special:Permalink/18074873#Move_of_Wikimedia_Slovakia_User_Group). Since I have had some experience with this kind of issue from the two or three times it has come up before, I was relatively confident with it already; however, this time, due to an additional complication I did make a mistake which can be seen at https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikimedians_of_Slovakia/Reports/2013/de&action=history. This was because user AdiGHustler19 had posted a set of Slovakian translations onto a /de subpage, and while I had noticed that, I accidentally used the same script to move those translation units to match the new article title still with the /de suffix even after specifically excluding them to handle later at first. Noticing it midway, I then just deleted the unit pages (both the ones I had already moved by accident and the ones the script hadn't reached yet) which already had a translation at Wikimedians of Slovakia/Reports/2013/sk by a different user since the (actually) German translations of AdiGHustler19 appeared to be low-quality in a set of cases; the remaining translations by the user I moved to the correct /sk titles manually after marking them fuzzy. Sorry for the inconvenience; everything should be fixed now. ~~~~

Translation request

I tried to send notices via Special:NotifyTranslators about VisualEditor/Newsletter/2022/August (seven short sentences – could be the fastest translation job you do this month, if anyone's interested ;-) ). It doesn't seem to have worked. I got the usual completion notice about the messages being queued, but (hours later) no messages appear to have actually been sent. I'm not sure where to find the queue or how to figure out whether it's broken again, or if I just didn't do something right. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 01:36, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

I'm quite an active translator here on Meta. My question is, how can I get my own translations reviewed? Or is this not possible? Thanks for your help. Lois131 (talk) 09:59, 9 July 2022 (UTC)

You cannot mark yourself your own translations as “reviewed”. Anyone else can do it. Or, if someone edit your translation, you can then mark it as reviewed. -- Pols12 (talk) 13:20, 2 August 2022 (UTC)
@Pols12 Thanks, okay. But then it's what's above the translations on the left: State: In progress, Needs updating, Proofreading, Ready, Published. I usually mark translations as Ready. Thanks :) Lois131 (talk) 15:22, 2 August 2022 (UTC)

Grant editcontentmodel right for translation administrators

Greetings,

The Language engineering team has implemented a new functionality that allows translation of JSON content called message bundles. Message bundles contain strings in key-value JSON format representing a message group that can be translated. Each key represents a translation unit and the value is the translation unit source that can be translated.

For this feature, we’ve added a new page content model: Translatable message bundle. To create a message bundle, user’s can create a page with JSON content, and then change the content model to translatable message bundle. We hope that this will be used by volunteers to translate courses from WikiLearn, and in the future to provide localisation support for Scribunto modules.

Changing the content model requires the editcontentmodel right which is currently only available for administrators on Meta-Wiki. There has been some plan to enable it for other users but that hasn’t happened yet.

We would like to grant the editcontentmodel right to translation admins group on Meta-Wiki so that the message bundle feature can be utilized. We will go ahead and do this after one week if there are no objections.

APatro (WMF) (talk) 14:58, 8 September 2022 (UTC)

  • I kind of thought about this proposal when Meta:Requests for bot status/WikiLearnBot occurred. This could be a possible solution for 'WikiLearnBot'; it can be granted TA so I support this proposal. Kind regards, — Tulsi 24x7 15:22, 8 September 2022 (UTC)
  • Why can't users immediately create a page as a "translatable message bundle"? --MF-W 17:22, 8 September 2022 (UTC)
My tests reveal that creating a page directly with the content model as translate-messagebundle also requires the edicontentmodel right. See this proposal that requests that the existing editcontentmodel be broken down into two rights with one allowing users to create pages with non-default content models. APatro (WMF) (talk) 09:36, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
@APatro (WMF) so, fix that? — xaosflux Talk 13:33, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
..And not by needing another permission, by doing using the same functionality that is extant for SCSS, CSS, JS, JSON already. — xaosflux Talk 13:34, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
  • I would prefer T300497 get implemented and then translation admins get setcontentmodel instead on general principle of least privilege grounds, but I guess don't have a formal objection to this as is. * Pppery * it has begun 20:22, 8 September 2022 (UTC)
T300497 has been implemented and is available for use on Meta-Wiki. APatro (WMF) (talk) 09:21, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
Regarding the setcontentmodel right, there is no such right as of now. I think its being explored in T248294 APatro (WMF) (talk) 09:45, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
Oops, that was the link I meant to post, must have copy-pasted the wrong thing. * Pppery * it has begun 13:49, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
  • Proposal crossposted to Meta:Babel#Grant editcontentmodel right for translation administrators. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 09:48, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
  • It seems like this already came up somewhere else. The workflow to build these new pages should be build such that it works without needing this. A hook may be needed. For examples, pages can already be created directly in to other content models such as JS, JSON, CSS, SCSS. The workflow shouldn't require manually authoring a JSON page, then manually changing it to another content model - what is the benefit of putting this extra work in to this worflow? — xaosflux Talk 13:30, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
That all being said, I don't have a specific problem with TA's having changecontentmodel access here - but I don't like this workflow and don't want to have to give TA to everyone that needs to workaround this wonky workflow. — xaosflux Talk 13:33, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
My tests reveal that creating a page directly with the content model as translate-messagebundle also requires the edicontentmodel right which is disabled for normal users on Meta-Wiki. See: T85847
See this proposal that requests that the existing editcontentmodel be broken down into two rights with one allowing users to create pages with non-default content models. APatro (WMF) (talk) 14:55, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
@APatro (WMF) sure - today, I'm saying: fix that, just the same way that users can create pages in all sorts of content models already. Building out this entirely new content model should come with building out all the tools needed to support it. For example, if you go to create User:APatro (WMF)/apage.json, it gets made as a json page - not because you have a special permission, but because there is a workflow for that that just makes it work. Also don't see why you want users to create a page in JSON, then have to go and change it to TMB. Why not just make creating TMB's directly be a thing that doesn't require each project that would ever use this to have to worry about this? — xaosflux Talk 15:50, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
    Thanks for your input.
Adding this right to translation administrators is the first step to having this feature generally available. We are considering using the title suffix approach for future integrations but have not come up with a good pattern that would be suitable for e.g. for WikiLearn.
APatro (WMF) (talk) 15:17, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
Even if this were done, I doubt we are going to start making anyone that wants to contribute a translation in to a TAdmin, so how are translating editors suppose to even use this? Is there some documentation of the end user workflow (directions and procedures for contributing that worked in the lower environments) for this? — xaosflux Talk 13:36, 14 September 2022 (UTC)
The process would be similar to how we handle translatable pages.
The translation administrator prepares the message bundle. After that they change the content model of the page containing the message bundle to translatable message bundle. The strings in the message bundle will then be available for translators to translate. Individual translators need not have the editcontentmodel right. APatro (WMF) (talk) 14:25, 14 September 2022 (UTC)
@APatro, how does a Translatable-message-bundle page look, in read mode? If JSON is displayed as raw-text, I think this kind of pages should not be in main namespace. So creating a dedicated namespace would solve this issue. -- Pols12 (talk) 14:23, 14 September 2022 (UTC)
We want to provide translation administrators a general feature to create a message bundles for translation. While we will use this for WikiLearn for now, in the future, we will have more options to create a message bundle automatically.
Using namespaces or subpages is the plan for more use-cases we will have in the future, such as lua modules and gadgets but it makes sense to keep the WikiLearn courses in the main namespace. APatro (WMF) (talk) 16:44, 14 September 2022 (UTC)
We've created: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T317786 to improve the way message bundles are displayed and edited. APatro (WMF) (talk) 14:24, 16 September 2022 (UTC)
  •  Weak support lots of reservations above that this should be done in another way, but as this won't be needed by editors making translations, just those aleady doing the markup, not seeing a big problem. — xaosflux Talk 15:15, 14 September 2022 (UTC)

Why can't I use Google Translate?

I don't have many friends who speak other languages Toad4707 (talk) 03:11, 27 September 2022 (UTC)

Presumably because if readers wanted a Google Translated version, they could run the English text through Google translate themselves so doing it for them is counterproductive. * Pppery * it has begun 13:32, 27 September 2022 (UTC)
Because it produces poor-quality translations. We expect better translations from human translators. -- Pols12 (talk) 20:20, 27 September 2022 (UTC)

Could someone do something with this page? It's been pending translation admin action since June, and wasn't actioned when I brought it up in the standard oldest pages reports. * Pppery * it has begun 00:07, 20 October 2022 (UTC)

Given “On the format of this very page” discussion, I don’t want to handle such a messy page. I let WMF staff deal with that one. -- Pols12 (talk) 02:03, 20 October 2022 (UTC)

Come annullare l'iscrizione?

Purtroppo non ho sufficiente tempo per tradurre: desidero cancellarmi dalla lista, ma non ci riesco. Contrariamente a quando leggo, nella pagina Special:TranslatorSignup non è possibile cancellarsi. Grazie. Il Tuchino (talk) 05:35, 13 October 2022 (UTC)

@Il Tuchino: It’s not obvious, but you can unsubscribe there: just set all three languages to Choose a language, and you won’t get any notifications. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 13:14, 13 October 2022 (UTC)

Automatic anchors for translation pages

The Language team has implemented a feature to automatically add source language heading anchors to translation pages. With this feature manual anchors are no longer needed for the purpose of being able to link to a specific section of a translatable page.

This will be deployed here very soon, it's part of this weeks deployment train. Translation pages are not updated immediately to have these anchors, only when they are updated for any reason. We may consider running a script to refresh all translation pages eventually.

Please let us know if you notice any issues or have other feedback. This feature is tracked in https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T62544 Nikerabbit (talk) 14:26, 8 September 2022 (UTC)

Small correction: it's part of this weeks train (1.40.0-wmf.1), not last week's as I claimed. Nikerabbit (talk) 07:17, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, I am aware now and will track the new behaviour is satisfying avoiding manual duplication.

Ideas?

@Pppery and @Pols12, do you guys have any idea why "Meta-Wiki" and "Media-Wiki" appear in English on the translated versions of this template: Template:Project lists? ─ The Aafī (talk) 13:54, 9 December 2022 (UTC)

Done They were not marked for translation in main templates. Instead of adding them for translation, I have added MediaWiki interface messages as fallbacks. By the way, I have removed the local translatability for other project names: it is simpler to use interface messages instead. -- Pols12 (talk) 21:18, 9 December 2022 (UTC)
Thanks @Pols12. By the way, how do I add Urdu names for them as they happen to still appear in English. ─ The Aafī (talk) 05:52, 10 December 2022 (UTC)
That happens on Translatewiki.net: [1] and [2]. You need an account there. Pols12 (talk) 11:02, 10 December 2022 (UTC)
Thanks my friend @Pols12. I registered there and made some beginning translations but idk by when would my account be upgraded :) @Amire80 can likely help since they are a 'crat there. ─ The Aafī (talk) 17:08, 10 December 2022 (UTC)
@Pols12, this is still in English. I translated these terms more than a week ago on Translatewiki. ─ The Aafī (talk) 13:20, 19 December 2022 (UTC)
@TheAafi, translations have well been imported from Translatewiki.net. I now see them in Urdu in /ur subpage of the template and on transcluding pages. There was probably a caching issue. If you still see English terms, your browser has maybe cached the pages, so you need to force a full refrech in your browser. -- Pols12 (talk) 16:49, 19 December 2022 (UTC)

Please mark for translation

Hi,

I have added some lines to Template:Movement Charter/Sidemenu, can someone please mark them for translation so they become visible for the translators? Thanks! Ciell (talk) 08:59, 14 November 2022 (UTC)

Mark for translation

Can anyone please mark Project Korikath for translation? I want to translate it. Mehediabedin (talk) 14:21, 14 November 2022 (UTC)

Done -- Pols12 (talk) 22:00, 14 November 2022 (UTC)

@Pols12: Can you mark for translation to its template Template:Project Korikath/Nav also? I am going to translate both because I can't translate the Navigation bar. Mehediabedin (talk) 11:04, 20 November 2022 (UTC)

Done 🙂 -- Pols12 (talk) 22:23, 21 November 2022 (UTC)

¿Hay ninguna pagina para traducir? (Any pages to translate?)

Yo estaba preguntarse sí hay es un lista de pagina necesito traducir. ¿Esta ahí un? (I was wondering if there is a list of pages to translate. Are there ones?)

Please don’t mind my bad spanish

SikiWtideI (talk) 22:41, 19 November 2022 (UTC)

@SikiWtideI: Special:PageTranslation --Ameisenigel (talk) 07:54, 20 November 2022 (UTC)
  • Special:PageTranslation first lists pages which requests to be translatable, but which aren’t (yet).
  • You may use Special:Translate which defaults display last translatable units. Click on the “All” link in the top of the page to see all translatable pages with there progression in your language.
  • Finally, you may use Special:LanguageStats to see all translatable pages (sometimes gathered in Aggregate Groups) in a table, with their progression in your language.
Please note those 3 pages contain many outdated content with a really low translation priority. We do not have a serious priority handling. Pols12 (talk) 21:51, 21 November 2022 (UTC)

UI string question

I’m wondering what is the policy here for UI strings, since about 50% of the left sidebar is untranslated in my language. After much digging I found, for example, where the localized label for Research should have been defined, but there’s no option to create it. Then I went up to the English label and found

You do not have permission to edit this page, for the following reason:
This page provides interface text for the software on this wiki, and is protected to prevent abuse. To add or change translations for all wikis, please use translatewiki.net, the MediaWiki localisation project.

which is misleading, since I was on translatewiki and neither the message key nor the string “Research” is there. How do we get these strings translated? (I just checked German and they’re all translated, so this definitely should be possible, somehow.) Thanks! — Al12si (talk) 04:53, 15 December 2022 (UTC)

The normal location to translate user interface messages is indeed Translatewiki.net. However, the messages used on MediaWiki:Sidebar are wiki-specific and so must be translated locally. You may open an edit request on each message’s talk page, or give all translations as a whole at Meta:RfH. -- Pols12 (talk) 21:28, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
