Wikiclubs

As of September 30, there are 205 registered members in all 8 active Wikiclubs (Goris, Ddmashen, Lernapat, Kirants, Koghb, Hatsik, Jermuk, and Kajaran). Wikiclub members continued the wikification of materials from the “Agricultural Encyclopedia” (“Armenian Encyclopedia” Publishing House, 2015) which was released under the Creative Commons BY-SA 3.0 license. Wikiclub members either created the missing items of the corresponding pages in Wikidata or linked the created articles with already existing items. Within the frames of this project 30 articles with a volume of 141,227 bytes were created in September. Since the launch of the project 631 articles, 1,669,245 bytes have been contributed to Armenian Wikipedia. The project will continue in October, as well.
In September, the Western Europe Fall three-stage project the purpose of which is to enrich Armenian Wikipedia with articles about those countries which are not covered by the annual CEE Spring contest. The term Western Europe in this project is strictly conditional because there are North and South European countries included, as well. Overall, articles about 25 countries are created and improved. During this competition project, the club members translate biographies and articles on different topics - geography, sports, cooking, culture, art, literature, etc - from other language Wikipedias into Armenian. The project has three stages and will last until the end of November. At each stage of the project, the club member who is the most active and creates quality articles receives a gift set by Wikimedia Armenia, and four more participants are given certificates. The Wikiclub that shows the best result in the sum of all three stages will be awarded by the Wikimedia Armenia special award.
Within the framework of the project, 17 Wikiclub members created 109 articles with a volume of 1,211,391 bytes.
Wikiedits
[edit]Throughout September, out of 205 Wikiclub members 60 contributed to Wikipedia. In total, they have created 196 articles and made 856 edits with a volume of 2,594,045 bytes.
During the month of September, 53 Wikiclub members contributed to Wikidata, by making 233 edits in total.
Other events
[edit]Besides editing, the following events were organized in Wikiclubs:
In Kirants Wikiclub two Wikiclub members did a presentation on September 29. This time the topic was the “Harmful effects of tobacco.”
“Wikified fight against corruption” project
[edit]In September Wikimedia Armenia and Transparency International Anti-Corruption Center started a joint collaboration within the framework of the “Wikified fight against corruption” project. It included Wikipedia training during which Wikimedia Armenia employees introduced to volunteers how to edit Wikipedia and Wiktionary. As a result, the volunteers create wikicontent on the negative consequences of corruption manifestations, as well as the methods of preventing and/or combating them.
The training and editing workshops started in September and they will be continuous.
WLE winners and awards ceremony
[edit]In June 2024 Wikimedia Armenia joined the “Wiki Loves Earth 2024” international photo contest. The natural monuments of the Republic of Armenia are 232 and the lists separated by the regions were available on the contest pages. To help the participants find necessary information, the links to the articles on reserves and national parks of Armenia were also available on the same pages.
During the month of June, 37 participants from the Armenian wiki community, out of which 10 were newly registered ones, uploaded 3150 photos of natural monuments to Wikimedia Commons.
On September 17, the Armenian awards ceremony for the winners of the “Wiki Loves Earth 2024” photo contest was held at Wikimedia Armenia’s office.
The fifteen best photos of the Armenian contest and their authors were presented during the ceremony. They received awards and certificates prepared by Wikimedia Armenia and WWF Armenia.
30th anniversary of “Internet Society” NGO
[edit]On September 15, “Internet Society” and Wikimedia Armenia launched the already annual “WikiHay” campaign. The purpose of the campaign is to enrich Wikipedia with Armenian language content. This year the campaign is dedicated to the “.am” Armenian domain and the 30th anniversary of our partner and the sponsor of the campaign “Internet Society” NGO. Taking into account the above-mentioned, the sponsors of the competition have also prepared a special prize. Thus, besides the 12 prizes in different categories, the special “.am-30” prize will also be awarded.
The "Internet Society" NGO, which has dedicated 30 years to the development of Internet and the “.am” domain, has announced the enrichment of Armenian content in this field as the theme of the jubilee year of "WikiHay". The articles should be created and improved only from the suggested list. The campaign-contest will end on October 15.
Wikimedia CEE Meeting 2024
[edit]From September 20 to 22, 2024, the annual Wikimedia CEE Meeting was held in Istanbul, Turkey. The purpose of this annual meeting is to bring together the representatives of the Wikimedia communities from the CEE region in one place, to share experience and to present new ideas.
This year, from the Armenian wiki community, Arshak Shahenyan, the president of Wikimedia Armenia, Mher Bekaryan, the quality content coordinator, Davit Sargsyan, the event coordinator, and Mari Avetisyan, the grants consultant, were present at the meeting.
Within the framework of the CEE meeting, representatives of Wikimedia Armenia had meetings with representatives of other Wikimedia communities, trying to start collaborative projects. In particular, a meeting was held at the initiative and suggestion of the Wikimedia Users Group of Turkey, during which the possibility of cooperation in the format of an edit-a-thon was discussed. A discussion was held between representatives from Wikimedia Armenia, Wikimedia Ukraine, Wikimedia User Group Romania and Moldova and the Grants Officer of the Wikimedia Foundation regarding the International Medical Wikicamp planned for next year.
In addition to meetings and discussions, the president of the organization participated in a panel discussion on the implementation of educational programs, presenting the outstanding experience of Wikimedia Armenia in the implementation of educational programs, their impact and importance.
At the same time, Mari Avetisyan presented the "Wikipedia for Women" project, telling about the project's importance, target groups, goals and implementation process, as well as the results. The project and its results aroused general interest among the audience, and many questions were asked.
Within the framework of the CEE meeting, the representatives of Wikimedia Armenia also had the opportunity to meet with representatives of the Diaspora Armenian Wikimedians Talin Nayir, Haykanush Minasian and Diana Bulduk Yanardagh. During the meeting, the possibilities of cooperation between Eastern Armenian and Western Armenian Wikimedia communities were discussed.
In media
[edit]Wikimedia Armenia strives to present the projects and programs implemented by the organization to larger international audiences. For this purpose, two summer Wikicamps for teenagers and youth were presented for publication in the Wikimedia CEE newsletter. You can read the article here.
Community Meet-up
[edit]One of Wikimedia Armenia’s regular community meet-ups took place on September 6. The meet-ups are organized for organization members, staff and wiki community interested in WMAM activities. The meet-up was organized offline at Wikimedia Armenia’s office, as well as online via Zoom platform.
There were 12 offline participants and 7 online ones joining the regular meet-up. During the meeting, participants were introduced to the works done during the third quarter, the plans for the future projects and events, as well as the Wikimedia CEE Youth Group activities, in particular the youth conference planned for the next year. A number of current issues related to WMAM and the ongoing projects were discussed.
