Wikiclubs

In May, Wikimedia Armenia opened its 8th Wikiclub in the southern part of Armenia - Kajaran. As of May 31, there are 185 registered members in all 8 active Wikiclubs (Goris, Ddmashen, Lernapat, Kirants, Koghb, Hatsik, Jermuk, and Kajaran). Wikiclub members continued the wikification of materials from the “Agricultural Encyclopedia” (“Armenian Encyclopedia” Publishing House, 2015) which was released under the Creative Commons BY-SA 3.0 license. Wikiclub members either created the missing items of the corresponding pages in Wikidata or linked the created articles with already existing items. Within the frames of this project 26 articles with a volume of 54,150 bytes were created in May. Since the launch of the project 522 articles, 1,322,897 bytes have been contributed to Armenian Wikipedia. The project will continue in June, as well. In May, the second stage of the “Ahead of the Euro 2024” project started. It is dedicated to the UEFA Euro 2024 to be held in Germany from June 14 to July 14. In the course of this multi-stage competition project, Wikiclub members translated articles related to the European football championships from other language Wikipedias into Armenian (it can be biographies of European champions, football players who participated in the Euros, referees, coaches, European championships, qualifying tournaments, teams, stadiums, articles related to official balls, etc.). Thanks to this project, the number of articles about European football has increased on Armenian Wikipedia. Within the framework of the 2nd stage of the project, 19 Wikiclub members created 89 articles with a volume of 2,076,502 bytes. The project will have 4 stages and will continue until the end of July. Each stage of the project is competitive. The winner receives a gift and a certificate provided by Wikimedia Armenia, and 4 other participants receive certificates.
Wikiedits
[edit]Throughout May, out of 185 Wikiclub members 70 contributed to Wikipedia. In total, they have created 325 articles and made 1372 edits with a volume of 5,230,703 bytes. During the month of May, 60 Wikiclub members contributed to Wikidata, by making 523 edits in total.
Other events
[edit]Besides editing, the following events were organized in Wikiclubs:
- On May 18, Hatsik Wikiclub organized a workshop dedicated to the International Museums Day. During the workshops 8 articles on museums were translated.
- On May 9, Koghb Wikiclub members paid tribute to those who died in World War II by visiting their monument. Afterwards they created 6 articles about the war. The Wikiclub member with the most contributions in May received a certificate.
- Kirants Wikiclub members presented a report on energy saving, discussed how to save non-renewable energy sources.
Opening of Kajaran Wikiclub
[edit]On May 11, the 8th Wikiclub was founded in Kajaran, Syunik region. The president and staff members of Wikimedia Armenia, guests from the local municipality, staff of the Palace of Culture, Wikiclub members’ teachers and parents were present at the opening ceremony. Wikimedia Armenia employees got acquainted with the newly opened Wikiclub members and organized a workshop for them. The opening of the Wikiclub was covered on a TV station in the Syunik region. Kajaran Wikiclub is operating in the Palace of Culture in Kajaran and was opened with the support of the local municipality and financial support of the Zangezur Copper Molybdenum Combine.
“Wikipedia for Women” panel discussion
[edit]On June 26-30, Wikimedia Armenia along with the Friedrich Naumann “Foundation for Freedom” organizes a “Wikipedia for Women” wikigathering. To uncover the topics and content to be created and improved on Armenian Wikipedia and to discuss the importance of the creation of Wikipedia content on empowerment of women and their role in Armenian society a panel discussion was organized at the Wikimedia Armenia office on May 20.
Representatives from NGOs working with women and for women, people who were interested in participating in the gathering, employees from the Friedrich Naumann “Foundation for Freedom” and Wikimedia Armenia were present at the panel discussion. During the panel discussion content gaps on women related topics were uncovered towards which the overall project and the gathering is planned to work on.
Financial Economic Wikimonth 2024
[edit]On May 24-28, the Financial-Economic Wiki Gathering 2024 was held in Tsaghkadzor, Kotayk region of Armenia. In total, 24 people participated in the gathering. During the four days of the gathering, they created 308 articles on financial and economic topics with a volume of 9,290,044 bytes from the lists given on the project page.
During the gathering an excursion was organized for the meeting participants. During the excursion, the participants visited the Marmarik Reservoir and the cascade of waterfalls on the Meghradzor River. Many participants took photos of various natural elements and landscapes and uploaded them to Wikimedia Commons as part of the Wiki Loves the Earth contest.
Overall, within the framework of the "Financial Economic Wikimonth 2024” competition, 946 articles with a volume of 30,203,742 bytes were created by 41 participants. The 3 winners of the competition and the best new editor were awarded monetary prizes set by the Central Bank of Armenia, and 10 editors who had the best results received certificates from the Central Bank of Armenia and Wikimedia Armenia. Four more participants received special awards from the Deposit Guarantee Fund of Armenia and the Armenian Motor Insurers’ Bureau for creating thematic articles. The entire program, including the excursion, was financed by the Central Bank of Armenia
“Wiki Literary World” edit-a-thon
[edit]In May, “Wiki Literary World” (“Wikigrashkhar” in Armenian) edit-a-thon was organized by Wikimedia Armenia in collaboration with “Darak” publishing house. During the edit-a-thon articles on writers, literary characters and works and movies based on them were created.
Overall 23 Wikipedia editors created 117 articles with a volume if 1,152,153 bytes during the edit-a-thon.
All participants received certificates, books as prizes, and the most active ones received valuable books from “Darak” publishing house.
Wiki Loves Earth 2024
[edit]In May, 2024 Wikimedia Armenia joined the “Wiki Loves Earth 2024” photo contest.
There are 232 natural monuments of Armenia and their lists separated by regions of Armenia were available on the contest page. As a help, links to articles and a map of all the reserves and national parks in Armenia were also posted on the contest page.
During the month of May 46 participants from the community, out of which 14 were newly registered participants, uploaded 3150 photos of natural monuments of Armenia. In June, the photos will be filtered, all photos with low quality, without a code or with a wrong title will be removed from the contest. All the other photos will be sent to the jury.
Photo walks
[edit]Within the frames of the “Wiki Loves Earth” contest, on May 9 and May 19, Wikimedia Armenia organized two photo walks to different directions of Armenia. The first direction was Tavush region - Sartsapat Mountain, Shaghot Waterfall, and Dimats Mountain. 10 community members took part in this photo walk taking pictures of landscapes, nature monuments and animals. During this activity 350 photos were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.
The second photo walk wasShirak region - Lake Arpi and the national park around it. Lake Arpi is considered to be the biggest bird sanctuary in Armenia. 20 community members participated in this photo walk. The participants wandered around with small groups taking pictures of the lake, the national park, birds, landscapes, etc. As a result of this photo walk more than 500 pictures were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.
CEE Spring 2024
[edit]As per the tradition, from March 21 to May 31, Wikimedia Armenia joined the annual cooperation of Central and Eastern Europe called “CEE Spring”, the purpose of which is to support the creation of articles about each country in the region in each Wikipedia.
In 2024, 18 Wikipedia editors joined the cooperation on Armenian Wikipedia, who created 628 articles with a volume of 10,137,479 bytes on 21 topics from 33 countries of Central and Eastern Europe. 198 articles were written about women, 98 of which were created by participant User:Slava Sahakyan70, and 68 by User:ԳՄԱ1286. Five participants created 1-2.5 million bytes of content.
