Women’s Month in Wikiclubs
[edit]In March, the "Women's Month in Wikiclubs" project was held specifically for Wikiclubs, which is dedicated to the unofficial women's month in Armenia, which lasts from March 8 to April 7. Within the framework of the project, the members of the Wikiclubs had translated articles about famous women of the world from other language Wikipedias into Armenian. Thanks to this project, the number of articles about women has increased on Armenian Wikipedia. The project was held as a competition. The winner received a gift and a certificate provided by Wikimedia Armenia, and 4 other participants received certificates. During the project, 25 Wikiclub members created 104 articles with a volume of 1,736,882 bytes
Wikiclubs
[edit]As of March 31, there are 156 registered members in all 7 active Wikiclubs (Goris, Ddmashen, Lernapat, Kirants, Koghb, Hatsik, and Jermuk). Wikiclub members continued the wikification of materials from the “Agricultural Encyclopedia” (“Armenian Encyclopedia” Publishing House, 2015) which was released under the Creative Commons BY-SA 3.0 license. Wikiclub members either created the missing items of the corresponding pages in Wikidata or linked the created articles with already existing items. Within the frames of this project 53 articles with a volume of 134,198 bytes were created in March. Since the launch of the project 463 articles, 1,200,497 bytes have been contributed to Armenian Wikipedia. The project will continue in April, as well. Wikiedits
[edit]Throughout February, out of 156 Wikiclub members 57 contributed to Wikipedia. In total, they have created 251 articles and made 1071 edits with a volume of 2,952,004 bytes. During the month of March, 47 Wikiclub members contributed to Wikidata, by making 303 edits in total.
Other events
[edit]Besides editing, the following events were organized in Wikiclubs:
- Hatsik Wikiclub members paid a visit to Saint Hakob Church and “Tsak kar” shrine. During the hike, the Wikiclub members talked about the shrines and sanctuaries in Hatsik and shot a short video. After the hike, they made small bunches of snowdrops to congratulate their mothers and grandmothers on March 8.
- On March 17, a Charentsian mood was felt in Hatsik's Wikiclub. The editors first got acquainted with Wikisource, learned how to find and read the book or work of their choice from Wikisource, and then they read famous Armenian poet Yeghishe Charents’ poems. Afterwards, they listened to the songs created on the basis of Charents’ poems and performed by the PROJECT LA.
- Goris Wikiclub members visited House-Museums of Yeghishe Charents and Martiros Saryan in order to create articles about them.
- The best Wikieditor of March was selected in Koghb Wikiclub, the winner received a certificate of honor. During the month a discussion was organized on the topics of “Current self” in order to reveal the negative and positive sides of Wikiclub members.
Teachers’ and Professors’ Wikipedia Training and Gathering
[edit]In March 2024, Wikimedia Armenia organized a Teachers’ and Professors’ Wikigathering, which was preceded by a training, the purpose of which was to familiarize beginners with Wikipedia editing skills, which would enable them to join the Wikigathering on equal terms with experienced editor-teachers.
The training took place both online, mainly for teachers from rural areas, and offline formats. 31 teachers participated in the training and it lasted for two weeks. During the training, they created 39 articles with a volume of 589,704 bytes.
The gathering took place at “Alpina” hotel in Tsaghkadzor, Armenia. 10 of the experienced teachers who applied for participation and 20 beginners selected by the results of the training, created 260 articles with a volume of 5,222,969 bytes during the four days of the gathering. All articles are written from the list of the vital articles.
A visit to the House-Museum of the Orbeli Brothers and the Kecharis Monastery complex was organized for the participants of the gathering. Apart from that, an intellectual game and bowling were also organized.
Collaborations with universities/internships
[edit]From February 8, Wikimedia Armenia started an internship of the senior students from three Armenian universities. Students from two faculties of the Brusov State University, faculty of English Language, German Language and Communication of Yerevan State University, as well as students from three departments of the Faculty of Humanities of YSU Ijevan Branch began their internship under the guidance and help of Wikimedia Armenia employees. 146 students registered on Wikipedia, learned to create articles on Armenian Wikipedia, and afterwards began creating new articles by translating from different foreign languages or using sources. Internships will end in March, and the results will be summarized that month. Throughout the whole internship of all university students, in total 500 articles were created with a volume of 21,779,992 bytes.
Brusov State University
[edit]During the internship 86 senior students from the faculties of Translation and Intercultural Communication and Russian and Foreign Languages translated 207 articles with a volume of 13,031,491 bytes doing translations from English, Chinese and Korean Wikipedias. Articles translated from English were from the list of vital articles.
Faculty of English Language, German Language and Communication, Yerevan State University
[edit]Five senior students from this university translated vital articles from English Wikipedia creating 14 articles, 891,362 bytes.
Yerevan State University Ijevan Branch
[edit]Students from this university continued their internship online. During the online meetings, students presented their work, made corrections to their articles in their sandboxes and the main space. Besides the online meetings, an employee from Wikimedia Armenia visited Ijevan, Armenia where the university is located and organized 4 trainings within two days answering questions, indicating the major and most common errors editors usually do and helping them publish their articles. Along with these activities, a special training was organized for part-time students from the Department of Armenian History and Social Sciences of the Faculty of Humanities. The latter internship started on March 7 and will last until April. By doing their translations from English, French, and Russian Wikipedias, as well as using Armenian printed sources, 55 students of the Departments of Armenian History and Social Sciences, Armenian Language and Literature, and Foreign Languages created and improved 279 articles, 7,856,139 bytes.
Wikimedia Armenia’s events on media outlets
[edit]Students from several universities of Armenia had a chance to do their internships at Wikimedia Armenia starting from February 8, 2024. The newsletter article describing these internships was published in the CEE Newsletter.
