Hi, Nemo. I'm trying to figure out how to put the standard global contributions bar at the bottom of the Special:Contributions pages on my wiki (Judeo-Spanish or Ladino Wikipedia). I copied in the template from Simple English Wikipedia, and it's now sitting at lad:MedyaViki:Sp-contributions-footer. (I do have to translate it.) But I don't know how to get it to actually appear on the Contributions pages. Can you possibly help me? Thanks.

While I'm asking questions: How do I get the extension adding links to personal sandboxes installed on that wiki? StevenJ81 (talk) 17:01, 10 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
@Nemo bis: I think you were away when I first asked this, so I'm pinging to ask again. Thanks. StevenJ81 (talk) 19:42, 26 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Wishlist Survey template

[edit]

Nemo, I reverted your edit to the Wishlist Survey template. The survey is important for our team. I know that there are previous wishlists, but I don't think that our current survey should be haunted by old lists. The Community Tech team is new, and we want to set a standard process for how we define and prioritize projects. Pointing people to other pages will confuse the people that we're talking to right now, and I think it's disruptive. Please don't do that again. DannyH (WMF) (talk) 20:06, 11 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

DannyH (WMF), WTF is going on? Not only it's inappropriate to just cancel someone's edit because you simply do not like it, you have also protected the template so now it's impossible for non-admins to e.g. make it translatable so that people who do not speak English could understand what it says. --Base (talk) 20:39, 11 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Base, good point. I wasn't thinking about the translations. I unprotected the template. DannyH (WMF) (talk) 20:49, 11 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks :) Full protection is a harsh way of stopping something and it stops not only unwelcome stuff. --Base (talk) 21:06, 11 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, you're right. Total overreaction on my part. DannyH (WMF) (talk) 21:08, 11 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for off-topic. Elitre (WMF), there's such a nice button "Add topic" at the top. Could you please use it for adding new sections, rather than editing the bottommost section and putting new header there. The latter way confuses those people whp watch the page. E.g. before I actually looked here I was sure that you commented on the section above (since that is in edit summary). Thanks ^_^. --Base (talk) 21:37, 20 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

CONTENTLANGUAGE

[edit]

Hi. Any idea why such an edit helped? The content language shown in page info was correct, but apparently the magic word did not work. While the template, which as I understand just uses subpage name by default, seem to work. Is it some known bug, or perhaps I have mistyped something so it didn't work? --Base (talk) 19:04, 29 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

What future IdeaLab campaigns would you like to see?

[edit]

Hi there,

I’m Jethro, and I’m seeking your help in deciding topics for new IdeaLab campaigns that could be run starting next year. These campaigns aim to bring in proposals and solutions from communities that address a need or problem in Wikimedia projects. I'm interested in hearing your preferences and ideas for campaign topics!

Here’s how to participate:

Take care,

machine translation

[edit]

I do mean to lump Google and all other machine translation, speaking as a linguist. Translation is far more involved than most people realize, and since we humans still dont really know how human language works, there is no way to program a machine, which still functions fundamentally differently from the human brain. For example, machines cannot take context into account and so will often give the wrong translation of a single word, when there is more than one possibility. In addition, languages often divide abstract concepts differently... the less related the two are, the more likely this is to happen. I dont mean to say that there will never be adequate machine translation, but we are a long way from that.Thelmadatter (talk) 13:42, 8 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Mass message

Watch-Wiki - translate extention

Hello Nemo_bis,

thank you very much for the note about the translate extention at the forum on watch-wiki.org! We are currently working on the translation of our landing-pages to build up the different language-wikis. There is a lot to do. We look forward to everybody who wants to help us, or who knows someone who could help.

Help decide the future of Wikimania

[edit]

The Wikimedia Foundation is currently running a consultation on the value and planning process of Wikimania, and is open until 18 January 2016. The goals are to (1) build a shared understanding of the value of Wikimania to help guide conference planning and evaluation, and (2) gather broad community input on what new form(s) Wikimania could take (starting in 2018).

After reviewing the consultation, we'd like to hear your feedback on on this survey.

In addition, feel free to share any personal experiences you have had at at a Wikimedia movement conference, including Wikimania. We plan to compile and share back outcomes from this consultation in February.

With thanks,

I JethroBT (WMF) (talk), from Community Resources 23:46, 12 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for help

[edit]

Thanks for the help on the new project concept Reporter's Notebook. I see job one is to search prior and existing proposals to check for dupes, overlaps, synergies, etc. Thanks for the Wikijournals lead.

Is there a way to get a listing of project title and project description extracted from the New sister project proposal template fields to facilitate review of all other projects? Getting the category(s) tagged would also be great. Eg rows of:
project title | project description | category(ies) tags

would be great for skimming. Thanks! Rjlabs (talk) 23:16, 17 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Probably not. Nemo 08:33, 18 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Notice of removal of global bot status from one or various accounts of yours

[edit]

Hello Nemo bis. You are being contacted as owner of one or more accounts flagged with global bot status. This is to inform you that pursuant §1.1.4 of the global bot policy as amended by this RFC one or various of the global bots which you operate are inactive in the terms laid out by the global bot policy. As such, global bot status from those account(s) have been removed. This message is being left on Meta-Wiki and on your homewiki. We thank you for your work as global bot operator. If you have any questions or concerns, you can raise them at the Stewards' Noticeboard on Meta-Wiki. Best regards. —MarcoAurelio 11:34, 27 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Future IdeaLab Campaigns results

I'm happy to announce the results of your participation, and encourage you to review them and our next steps for implementing those campaigns this year. Thank you to everyone who volunteered time to participate and submit ideas.

With great thanks,

Global bot

[edit]
This message is being left on your talk page at Meta-Wiki and those of your home wiki(s). Sorry for the duplicates.

Dear global bot operator: Some days ago you received a message in which you were informed that one or various accounts you hold lost a global bot flag because of inactivity. Due to a mistake, messages informing about this were not sent before removal took place as policy mandates. As such, if you think your bot will be active again on global bot duties, you can request the restoration of the global bot flag on the stewards' noticeboard at Meta-Wiki within the next two (2) weeks after this message has been posted. Please note that this removal was purely procedural based on inactivity. If you have any questions, you can reach me on my talk page at Meta-Wiki. Please accept my apologies in advance for this. Best regards. -- MediaWiki message delivery (talk) on behalf of MarcoAurelio at 18:11, 2 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your message of 2014. I don't, however, see why not having contributors who upload a lot of content that needs deleting is a problem for a wiki. I agree, I've been missing your voice in those discussions. -Pete F (talk) 00:46, 25 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
I think I won't consider subscribing to wikimedia-l again until I read a public apology by Austin to me, Odder and the list subscribers for the facta nefanda. Such an apology, rather than lies and stonewalling, should of course contain reassurances on the future transparency of moderation actions and concrete guarantees on the non-censorship of the list. For now, I don't consider it a productive use of my time to submit myself to the mailing list's dictators nor to give a contribution to the discussion which is evidently not so valued by the list subscribers; other lists are more productive.
In the meanwhile, I try not to read the archives. I consider myself mostly healed, but sometimes I can't resist reading some messages (only 925 in the last 5 months according to my browser history). When the unfortunate happens, I comment on the wiki or (for friends) by private email. Nemo 11:15, 28 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Revisione informatichese

[edit]

List of Wikipedias without local media files

91.9.98.208 02:07, 18 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Interesting list, nice to have its own page. You can help with this by yourself: just transfer appropriate files to Commons and mark with {{delete}} the local copies. Personally I like to help with the future uploads, mostly; your is a valuable, complementary work. Nemo 16:45, 18 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

In Robin's list (hopefully soon sortable), if there are 0 local files and no license, then "Soft-disabled" could be changed to "Disabled due to lack of MediaWiki:Licenses"? E.g. ia.wikipedia.org could be changed. Do you know, how this could be done? If not, could you research it? 91.9.123.222 21:07, 18 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Why would you do that? MediaWiki:Licenses can be edited any time, the configuration is more stable. Nemo 21:11, 18 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
The iawiki policy on images says that only Commons is to be used. There is no need for soft-disabled. 0/fully is the tightest config for non-closed wikis. Who can change that config? 91.9.123.222 21:26, 18 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
For wikis where the policy already prohibits local uploads, just request a configuration change to fully disable uploading. Nemo 21:37, 18 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Could you help me, and do it for iawiki? The ia:Wikipedia:Politica pro le uso de imagines is active since 2007 [2]. 91.9.123.222 22:14, 18 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Done, but I can't always be the one who asks disabling local uploads. ;-) Someone else has to make such requests too. You could create a throw-away account for the purpose if you don't want to edit as a registered user. Nemo 22:20, 18 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Great. I understand. For throw-away I would probably need a throw-away email address too, since the last time I tried to do something in phabricator I was asked for an email address. Privacy should be better respected. Anyway, that is another playground :-). Back to zero local, I find http://wikistats.wmflabs.org/display.php?t=wp&s=images_asc pretty helpful as it also has a count-column. Currently there are 39 with zero, including Aydghe with -10. Next DB update should list ~12 more. Thanks for all your work on this, I see your name in many places related to this. 91.9.123.222 23:13, 18 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Maybe a better brand: Zero local media files. http://wikistats.wmflabs.org/display.php?t=wp&s=images_asc now has 52. 91.9.123.222 00:40, 19 March 2016 (UTC) ... with the 20 wikis just filed to Nahid, 72 is close :-) 91.9.123.222 02:45, 19 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Removing zeropedias at Local uploads policy/taking stock [3]. More can be removed if Nahid has processed the 20-wiki-request from last night. 91.9.104.102 10:29, 19 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Requests for transfer to Commons

[edit]

All other files in the respective wiki were checked (please confirm each, they can then be made zeropedias):

Have you tried using toollabs:commonshelper? I don't fancy processing such requests on my own. Nemo 10:55, 19 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Needs OAuth. Would really like if you could do these, so they can be set to zero. Nahid already helps with deletions, so I don't want to ask him. 91.9.104.102 12:41, 19 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Those that have less than 1000 articles and are not closed might soon be all zero local. I worked through List of Wikipedias/Table#100.2B_articles. After 00:00 the table will display more zeros, thanks to Nahid. 91.9.104.102 17:04, 19 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
I now asked Nahid for these two transfers. 91.9.104.102 22:43, 19 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Upload config

[edit]

At https://tools.wmflabs.org/robin/?tool=uploadconfig , gomwiki is the only zerowiki that has upload enabled. 2 admins, 47 active users. Could become problematic easily. 91.9.104.102 13:37, 19 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

You should propose locally that upload be disabled and then we file the request of configuration change if nobody disagrees. Nemo 13:48, 19 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Before that, I would like to understand Upload config (page started). Robin's tool has several values that are not documented in the page. 91.9.104.102 17:40, 19 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Meaning of zero

[edit]

I thought zero is an easy concept in the context of natural numbers. Talk:List of Wikipedias/Table#Wrong file count - Special:Statistics differs from Special:ListFiles. Something critical for Phabricator, is it there already or is there another wontfix-text? 91.9.110.98 23:41, 20 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Phabricator

[edit]

1) dawiki went zero today, but counter has "2", similar to eswiki that has "1". (list) Could this be made a task in Phabricator? 2) Removing files from closed wikis - is this a task for Phabricator? 91.9.112.211 14:33, 30 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

1) yes, but better not make one request for a single wiki so I asked a few at phabricator:T131306; 2) definitely not, this is a content matter for the community: you can propose at Wikimedia Forum and if there is consensus ask stewards at SN. Nemo 20:10, 30 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
1) add nn, they have more files than the counter shows. 2) What community can a closed Wiki have? @SN Nahid left a message [4] that seems to indicate the SMWT people cannot delete files in closed Wikis. Temporary re-opening (via Phabricator?) might be a solution. 91.9.120.12 09:56, 1 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
What is the reason for not adding nn? 91.9.103.209 02:48, 4 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
1) nn doesn't fall in the criteria I indicated in the bug and it's never wise to change site requests radically after creation. If you also want to correct non-negative file counts with errors higher than 1, make a list and we'll file a request. 2) I confirm my answer above. Nemo 07:27, 4 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
1) negative + manual. nn is manual. Your statement is illogic. 91.9.115.36 12:46, 8 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
1) As you didn't want to add it to the Phab Task, Dereckson has been asked on MW user talk and he announced to run the script for nn too [5]. 91.9.124.73 11:01, 9 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
1) You wrote "criteria I indicated in the bug". I did check nn against description. Now I just saw the task name "Reset file count statistics on a few wikis with negative/off-by-one errors". That also falls under the "criteria ...". My claim of illogical was illogical. 91.9.127.25 12:08, 11 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Wiki.png

[edit]

Can you make a list and count showing which and how many Wikipedias still have a local Wiki.png? 91.9.107.250 17:34, 20 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

I like local Wiki.png. Nemo 13:54, 21 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Any local file may have a name of a file in Commons. Any name collision can result in false inclusions or other kind of references if done via Wikidata. Therefore any local file is preventing easy use of Wikidata. Apart from dynamic infoboxes there are also automated lists, e.g. in iawiki ia:Special:Contributiones/ListeriaBot, would probably not be save with local files. 91.9.102.160 09:27, 24 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Urdu Wikipedia

[edit]

Hello. Thank you very much!Thank you very much! for highlighting copyvio and unused Urdu Wikipedia files on Urdu Wikipedia. While most of the files asked by you have been nuked, there are some files while are in use / Wikipedia screenshots / historical logos, proposed symbols, etc which I found difficult to delete and hence I listed them in my talk page. These possibly require other treatment (either retaining as it is for fair use or movement to commons, depending the nature of the content, which we will see after some time). If there is anything else, plz discuss it on my talk page there. --Muzammil (talk) 18:41, 21 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

WMF:R:LP - anniversary

[edit]

Today it is the ninth anniversary of wmf:Resolution:Licensing policy. 91.9.100.23 06:57, 23 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the note. I'll feast when the resolution will be actually respected. :D Nemo 07:05, 23 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
roa-rup has 467 files, more than 50% unused. Is there a list of Wikipedias showing the unused files? Maybe there are more such cases. Switching to zero makes control of LP easier, just a number to watch. Actually, it is a lot of time wasting. All files could go to files.wikimedia.org and be managed by a WikiBase. Commons can be retained as a brand for Free Content. The current Commons system of storing information about the files is complicated: categories, templates, plain text, info in the files itself. I feast when the following are merged: Commmons (shared files, namespace File), Wikidata (shared data, namespace Item+Property), Source (namespace Source), Meta (shared [global] user pages, namespace User) and all other WMF public file storages. 91.9.100.23 09:23, 23 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Dreaming off. non-free.wikimedia.org would be a solution for several smaller wikis. Why was that not done? 91.9.100.23 09:54, 23 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
I'm not interested in making fair use easier. Your comment is more suitable for the proposal NonFreeWiki. Nemo 14:59, 23 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
@sentence 1: Interesting. I am personally fine with having all non-free stuff deleted. That would probably mean company pages without logos (e.g. Coca-Cola) and leaving out many Coat of Arms. Person-photos will become free, so I would not care here. @sentence 2: I found that after posting. In the talk page some people proposed to open up Commons and just tag files there, to reduce number of deletions. After deleting, no ordinary user can review the file anymore. BTW: I come from iawiki. They don't even have local data in infoboxes anymore, they only use Wikidata and that means all images in infoboxes have to come from Commons. Ideally one could also stop local categorization-tags and maybe delete all local user pages and user boxes. So people can focus on collaborative content instead. And all dab pages are at "X (disambiguation)", almost all X redirect to that page. Annual Plan draft

[edit]

Hello, Nemo.

Your cleanup in translation and punctuation have been very appreciated, but please do talk about substantive changes before making them, as per the request at the top of the page. I've explained my removal of your addition on the talk page. Personally, I think percentages may make sense, although I think probably a different percentage makes more sense. But it's important that we sync changes in the document, and discussing them will make sure that we all agree on what those changes should be. --Maggie Dennis (WMF) (talk) 13:59, 2 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

wow, you know very well, AGF is marketing to sell to the newbies. the WMF exhibits all the adversive kiss-up kick down, of the average admin. they want to be in charge but not responsible.
it's all well and good to create our circles of AGF at editathons and off-wiki, but we should not expect the cynical veterans will ever adopt such a culture. they've had 10 years. the revscore will automate edit "quality", if the human admins let it, Slowking4 (talk) 01:58, 31 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Merging IdeaLab proposals

[edit]

Hi - I see that you're merging a number of similar ideas that have been submitted for this month's Inspire Campaign. I respectfully request that instead of merging, you first post on the talk pages of relevant ideas to see if the creator and participants are in fact interested in this merger. Otherwise it can appear that people are endorsing an idea that they have not. Also, since unlike Wikipedia pages each of these ideas has a specific individual listed as creator, it can appear that they have created an idea different than they actually intended. Re:What did I say

[edit]
  • I don't know what the page contained, but most of the proposals I see are not about harassment in any way; should they be deleted/moved/closed too? It would help to tell people that this space is not meant to reiterate eternal discussion on perennial proposals. Nemo 15:34, 5 June 2016 (UTC)

In answer to your question, my proposal was titled "Accept that this is beyond our control to affect in any meaningful way" and then when on to stipulate that this was not something we could fix with a giant idea drive because the fault is with human nature, not the Wiki-X projects operated by the foundation. Apparently, that was not good enough for the inspire campaign, so when the idea was removed from the campaign for being 'not quite what we were looking for' or some other similarly phrased bs like that I took the hint and voluntarily asked for it to be deleted. I had no strong desire to be put in the silver medal group for having told a harsh truth, and if the meta community is going to be so very selective about what gets included in the idea drive by employing segregationist strategies to keep the unwanted ideas out then I want know part of this "inspire" campaign. Its just easier to accept that this is how things will get worse than to fight against the machine. In one sense though I proved my point: while not quite harassment human nature caused my idea to be weeded out for being "unhelpful", so if that foreshadows the way this inspire campaign will end then the only thing the idea(s) implemented from this idea drive are going to inspire is a lot a adversity among the community. TomStar81 (talk) 03:35, 11 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Translatewiki bug

[edit]

Hi Nemo,

Sorry for comtacting you here rather than on Translatewiki in the bug, but Translatewiki won't let me - the reply buttons there only give me an endless loading symbol...

This is the bug:

https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Thread:Support/Auto-locks_the_wiki_database_if_the_sysops_are_all_inactive_for_some_time#Errors_when_importign/exporting_a_po_file_51231

And this is the answer I was trying to post:

I just grabbed a fresh copy of the PO file, translated all new strings that contain the word "categorization" and uploaded the result at once. I got the usual success message. However, when I look here:

https://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Special:Translate&group=mediawiki&language=gd&filter=%21translated&action=translate

The strings are not translated. For further testing, how long does it usually take for the changes to show up?

I got a series of "translation changed" emails on 11 August for strings changed by akerbeltz, so something seems to have worked on that date.

Thanks, Nikerabbit used that URL for phabricator:T143889. According to the statistics, the job queue is not empty, so it may take some hours or days until the import is done. I see one edit already got imported: [11]. If in a few days you don't see all your edits, email Nikerabbit with your PO file. Nemo 10:05, 29 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Question

[edit]

Hi, I asked this on the WikiTeam irc channel but my connection dropped. I saw you uploaded a lot of Wikis so I figured maybe you'd know. I was wondering if there's a way to update an xml dump? Not resume one that's incomplete but synchronize a complete dump with the latest data on the live wiki? I'm using the dumpgenerator Thanks, Acer (talk) 10:05, 8 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

By the way, WT dumps Acer (talk) 02:01, 10 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

I don't think they intended to re-enable the API. I suspect it was a side effect of upgrading their MediaWiki infrastructure. That project is dying, the only languages still active are English, Japanese and German and even then a growing percentage of edits are from spam bots. Ideally I don't want to just leave all this material in the dumps, I'd like to incorporate as much as possible into Wikivoyage but it's not an easy task. That was my main interest in doing the back up. I hadn't planned on archiving other wikis but what the heck, I'll do it, at least the ones that were never downloaded. But I'll ask your help with something in return, and this was quite the coincidence, but take a look at these: voy:Wikivoyage:Travellers'_pub#FYI_-_Links_from_Commons and Commons:Village_pump#In_other_projects. I want Commons categories to link back to Wikivoyage articles. The way it's set up, Wikivoyage {and WP) link to the categories on commons through Wikidata but get no backlinks in return. I was looking on phrabricator for a ticket about this and saw you were involved in a number of similar sister link issues. This is my first time on phab so if you could help keep an eye on it I'd appreciate it, I opened a ticket here PS: You never answered my question above about updating XML dumps, thanks. Acer (talk) 13:33, 10 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

I meant that I have a 65 GB xml dump on my HD now. If say next month I wanted to archive WT again, is there a way to only download the new revisions/articles and incorporate them into my existing dump or would I have to download all of it again? Is there such a command for the dumpgenerator? Acer (talk) 13:53, 10 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi,

You’re getting this message because you participated in the 2015 Community Wishlist Survey and we want to make sure you don't miss it this year – or at least can make the conscious choice to ignore if it you want to. The 2015 survey decided what the Community Tech team should work on during 2016. It was also the focus of Wikimedia hackathons and work by other developers. You can see the status of wishes from the 2015 wishlist at 2015 Community Wishlist Survey/Results.

The 2016 Community Wishlist Survey is now open for wishes. You can create proposals until November 20. What is your way? Which 10 to 50 WPs you would like to restrict next? 77.180.156.154 07:29, 17 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Yellow are 6: sd*,sah*,pms*,th,pa,ro and red are 11: mr*,te,my,ms*,bs,ba,as,als,ml,ur,tt. Of these 5 are restricted: sd is restricted and has no local files, sah, pms,mr are restricted, ms disabled local uploads in 2016.
That leaves 12, Yellow 3: th,pa,ro Red 9: te,my,bs,ba,as,als,ml,ur,tt. When do you plan to have your next round of restricting? Would it be possible to include ksh,pfl which have no local files but are unrestricted? 92.230.143.142 07:44, 26 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
We need to propose locally that they disable local uploads and see how they react. Nemo 07:48, 26 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
You are maybe better in communicating on local Wikipedias. But if there is something you would like to be done by others, please say. Out of 295 Wikipedias there are 70 that have upload unrestricted. It may influence the way of talking, the 12 mentioned before are GSwiki: pa,my,ba,as,ur,tt Opt-out: th,ro,te,bs,als,ml. And the zero Wikis ksh,pfl are GSwikis and have 2800 and 2000 articles - these two might be the easiest. 85.179.111.62 11:53, 28 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello Nemo,

I'm asking you to reconsider your post on the talk page of Wikimedia Foundation Board noticeboard/November 2016 - Statement on Healthy Community Culture, Inclusivity, and Safe Spaces.

While everyone, including you, has the right to an opinion about Wikimedia Foundation, your comment as written seems like a poor way to start a discussion about building a healthy inclusive community.

I would appreciate it if you would remove the comment. And add back something that would move the discussion forward in manner that would aid in building a health community. Right now the wording is overly negative and way too broad to be useful. Sydney Poore/FloNight (talk) 21:10, 8 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Wikiquote universal mission

[edit]

Hello from ru.wikiquote. I am a sysop there and after numerous structured rules of Wikipedia it’s hard to make some sense of the almost absence of the rules in ru.wq, and a really small and polarized community of active users — 1 sysop, 2-5 experienced users (more or less) with really different points of view on the mission of wq, number of anonymous users and newbies not even bothering to answer, which is making hard to get to the consensus on new rules. There is a number of problems there, most of which, I guess, you have already overcome or, at least, acknowledge and have some ideas on solving. If there is a better place to ask (for what I’ve seen, most of meta topics have almost no activity, but I may be wrong on this point) — I won’t be offended if you send me there. :)

The main problem is, having read different topics on meta, en.wq, little of it.wq and mailing list concerning development of Wikiquote chapters, I can hardly see anything similar to wikinews’ mission or wikipedia’s five pillars (except for it.wq, which I personally like, but it’s local, not the centralized decision). What is the purpose of WQ? It seems, that every language chapter is trying to figure it out on their own. Is it really so, or are there any universal rules, which must be followed (except for copyrighted material, which is obvious)? Most of other questions are based on this one, because introducing some point of view to a community, the usual answer is «it’s only one point of view and it is wrong». All the following are based both on ru.wq experience and controversies in other chapters.

  • AFAIK, there are controversial opinions on original research:
    • should we use only already cited quotations (If it ain’t cited, it ain’t a quote) or is it ok to choose the excerpts ourselves?
    • is it ok to provide research for the origins of quote if there are no secondary sources (either reliable or none at all)?
    • is it ok to comment on translation, when there is a better way to express it? Translations are usually narrowed due to the necessity of one point of view or artistic value, but we here can provide many, showing more than one possible interpretation.
  • What are the universal principles for inclusion of the quote?
    • Are any authors/works fine, or just notable due to consensus in local wikipedia? For example, should there be a page of a not notable novel of notable author?
    • Threshold of originality is very debatable by itself, but, some trivial statement by a notable person could be valuable to characterize the person or its views. E.g., statements of psychologist, not being anything new, could illustrate his/her professional approach.
    • Usually it’s hard to explain to over-active users, that it’s not ok to make pages like «Table» and include every mention of the table in the poetry and literature (I guess, similar to the french case), or is it really fine?
  • Neutrality: is it ok to make pages on some «hot» topics like current conflicts, politics or religion, showing only one point of view, and if it’s not ok, whose burden is it to add the quotes «from the other side»? Or which percent of good/bad quotes is ok?

There is a lot of other questions and nuances, but each of them, one way or another, gets into the «it’s not a rule» or «you’re an idiot» dead end. A basic set of principles would be just perfect…

P.S. Great respect for all the job you’ve already done and still are doing, it’s really impressive. — GreenStork. 12:52, 5 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

I don't have time to answer all your points now, but have you read Neutral point of view on Wikiquote? Nemo 17:56, 9 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
It's no hurry - if we managed to get some things for more than ten years, it's not a problem to wait for some weeks or months. :) Of course I've read it and I think it would answer some of my points in a way I personally completely agree, but the issue is that it's the essay, and not the universal policy (kind of cornerstone I'm looking for), therefore, debatable. Nevertheless, I should give it a try and see what will happen next, thank you. — GreenStork. 10:39, 10 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Wikiteam

Hello. Is it possible to update a dump backup made with dumpgenerator.py? Thanks analyst1996

Yes, see the tutorial on how to run the script and upload files. If the item already exists on archive.org, you'll need to use the manual process and pick a different identifier/item title. Nemo 17:52, 9 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Actually i was talking about updating a wikia downloaded using dumpgenerator.py. Similar to how httrack can update an existing wikia. Not uploading it on archive.org. Thank you . Analyst1996
Sorry, I don't understand: do you want to update the Wikia wiki itself, that is edit its online content (for instance by importing something), or do you want to download the current content of a Wikia wiki to an up to date dump? If you just want a newer dump of some Wikia wiki, just tell me the name and I'll do it for you; but it's easy, see the tutorial linked above for instructions and ArchiveTeam tips for all the details. Nemo 09:00, 11 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hey. Me again. Here is what i mean. Say i downloaded a dump of a wikia using dumpgenerator.py some months back.now i want to update the existing dump that i downloaded. Is it possible? I did not see a update existing dump function. It is similar to how httrack can update a website previously downloaded. Speaking of httrack is it possible to only download the main namespace with httrack? Thanks analyst1996

No, it's not possible to resume a partial download (yet). Just download the entire wiki from scratch, is that a problem? Httrack has no knowledge of namespaces and it has a completely different purpose, are you sure you know what you're doing? What are you going to do with the local copy? Nemo 14:33, 11 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

i am going to use the local copy for reference purpose when i don't have internet. Which is most of the times. So httrack is no good. What about special:export? Can i simply select the category and download the necessary pages? By the way the category i am talking about has over seven thousand pages. Will that be a problem? Also i am not talking about a partial dump. I am talking about updating a complete dump with the new contents. Thank you very much for the help. Sorry for bothering. Analyst1996

Seven thousand pages is quite little, you should be able to download them in less than a hour. But how do you browse them? XOWA? Wikitaxi? Nemo 18:19, 11 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia library

[edit]

Hi Nemo. I noticed your comment on the recent WMF blog post Wikipedia builds a digital library system, and have left a comment myself (waiting for moderation). Can you tell me why the WMF doesn't just buy subscriptions to a full range of journals and buy access to an ebook library - just as universities all over the world do? Why are we begging for free scraps from the publishers' tables for a really second (or fifth) class service? --Anthonyhcole (talk) 00:04, 23 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

RE: Talk page deletion

I only deleted the page because it was a redirect to the archive, which made discussion impossible. I don't archive talk pages myself because of the flow/wikitext difference, and don't plan to do so anyway. Mainframe98 talk 08:33, 13 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Wikisocial

[edit]

Ti fidi di me?

Ciao --Caulfield (talk) 15:13, 4 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Instructions at WMF wiki need updating

[edit]

As a (relatively) recent editor of wmf:Wikimedia official marks/Word mark creation, I'm wondering if you could edit that page again to fix the instructions about logo creation as discussed at Foundation wiki feedback#Regarding wmf:Wikimedia official marks/Word mark creation#Preparing files for upload and Template talk:New wiki request#Another problem: Project logo. In particular, it appears that the recommended logo size should be "either 135×135 or 150×150 pixels". - dcljr (talk) 06:02, 20 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

wiki di luglio 2003

[edit]

  • No, non ho php 4.3

possibile?
