GLAM/OBC at Wikimania 2016
[edit]Ciao Esh, I'd like to anticipate to you that the staff here at Osservatorio Balcani e Caucaso would be happy to take part in Wikimania 2016 in order to present their experience with the GLAM OBC project and the impact of the collaboration with WM on their activities. Maybe it's still early to discuss it, but it could be a user digest presentation or another type of event. Best, --Davide Denti (OBC) (talk) 11:47, 24 November 2015 (UTC)
- Ciao, Davide. Sounds good! Soon enough WM-Italy will open the submissions. I suggest that you when they do (which surely you'll hear about), you make a submission about the project. There's a committee that decides what will be accepted or not, not me. But anything other than that -- you are welcome to submit here. Best, Shani (talk) 13:59, 26 November 2015 (UTC)

[Wikipedia & Education User Group] Updates: November 2018
[edit]Greetings,
Integrating Wikimedia with education is a powerful strategy for the outreach of Wikimedia projects. Realising this concept, a group of leaders promoted this and formed the Wikipedia Education Collaborative. After some time, this evolved to become a user group, officially recognised by the Affiliations Committee in June 2018. The user group had its first board elections earlier in September. In the process to formalise activities and give a shape the user group for long-term sustainability, we are now revamping our processes. Thanks for supporting us during incubation stages, we are now inviting you to formally join the user group by following the instructions on the members' page. Being a member will allow you to be a part of this wonderful collaboration and also do interesting stuff.
Kind regards
On behalf of Wikipedia and Education UG, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 11:44, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

- Dear Gerald, thanks so much, to you and to all the other candidates, for the courage and hard work it took to run. I also want to thank the facilitators, who did a great job in almost impossible conditions. I am excited and humbled to see the wide support from affiliates across the movement. I will do my best to represent and support all of you, and will especially work hard on better connecting with affiliates who chose not to vote for me this time. I don't take it personally; but rather see it as a personal challenge to change their minds and make sure they know I'm on their side as well. We have a lot of work a head of us, and as always, I'll strive to do it together. I look forward to going on this journey with all of you. With gratitude, Shani Evenstein. 13:10, 13 June 2019 (UTC)

Todo list
[edit]First of all, (belated) congratulations on your election to the board.
I read your candidate statement, and I'm very happy to see that you're focused on a lot of things the WMF really needs, particularly the focus on transparency and accountability (including FDC compliance). I was wondering if you've considered posting a "Todo list" (agenda, list of priorities...) of your major objectives to accomplish while you're on the board, and checking them off as they're solved, like User:Pundit did when they were elected. I think it would help give a sense of progress, especially for those who have the list on their watchlists.
Just a suggestion :) --Yair rand (talk) 21:18, 2 July 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks, Yair. I appreciate the suggestion! The short answer is -- yes, it's on my mind. The longer answer is -- I like transparency and lists, so I might just do something of the sort. At least that's what I was thinking about doing before. But first things first -- I'll have to be officially appointed, which will hopefully happen on August 14th. This will be followed by a period of on-boarding and better understanding how the BoT operates. After that, I'll be wiser about agenda, priorities and how to best communicate with the community. So, step by step... :) Best, Shani Evenstein. 21:54, 2 July 2019 (UTC)

Open Letter from Arbcoms to the Board of Trustees
[edit]Dear Board of Trustees,
This is an open letter from arbitrators and arbitration committees from across the Wikimedia movement.
We have followed closely the process of the creation of the Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC). We know that many small communities do not have a basic set of rules, so it's hard for new editors to have a good sense of what is allowed and what not. Additionally, we encourage the creation of basic rules of conduct for all wikis to ensure that nobody gets treated poorly. Editors in our communities wish to have an environment conducive to creating high quality content. We do not want to see editors discriminated against based on opinion, culture, sexuality, etc. Editors should be judged by their editing. In our experience, the global community and our projects will generally endorse rules that ensure no individual is a victim of discrimination or hounding.
However, we are concerned about the enforcement of the UCoC and concerned about how that enforcement will be viewed on our projects. The lack of formal consultation with projects before the board approved the UCoC means it risks being seen as imposed by the Wikimedia Foundation from above, rather than being seen as a legitimate community endeavor. Several of our projects have seen major damage and harm done when the communities have come into conflict with the Wikimedia Foundation (for instance dewiki with SUPERPROTECT and enwiki with FRAMGATE). We do not want that to happen with the Universal Code of Conduct as that could undermine the benefits it has to offer for projects without well-developed policies, systems, and experience for dealing with editor behavior. Recent changes to the timeline to allow for more consultation and discussion are a positive step.
It is therefore vital that projects with more sophisticated governing systems, like ours, be formally involved in the next step of the UCoC process. We note the recent call for a new committee to draft the second phase. At least one person with experience as an arbitrator, or similar experience dealing with complex and difficult behavior issues, should be added as a member of the drafting committee, and at least one additional person with this experience, or experience as a Steward, should be added as an advisor.
We understand that individual projects cannot be given a veto over the implementation of the UCoC. However, we hope that you understand that individual projects must feel committed to whatever enforcement mechanisms arise. Without this sense of investment and partnership the UCoC will ultimately fail. Mere consultation is insufficient. A formal process for ratifying the UCoC enforcement system is necessary.
The UCoC must also be a living document. The community is changing and evolving and so has universal behavior. We know that this is a different document than if it had been created 10 years ago, and we feel that universal norms will be different in 10 years. A way to amend the Universal Code of Conduct must be added, and this amendment process should build on lessons learned to date to ensure that communities and individuals have a chance for meaningful input before any amendment is adopted.
Wikipedia and other projects are only possible because of the hard work of editors at communities to create and maintain the incredible store of knowledge available. This path is longer, but hasty decisions and decisions that lack legitimacy in the eyes of the volunteers they effect could cause real damage to our communities and the work we do. In the words of the Wikimedia Foundation values, "Collaboration is not always easy. Sometimes we struggle. Working together is hard, but it’s worth it. We do it because it makes us stronger." We ask you to be stronger together with us.
Sincerely,
Signing members of the cswiki-arbcom

Invitation to participate in Universal Code of Conduct survey - WikiWomen's User Group
[edit](You are receiving this message as you signed your interest to participate as part of the WikiWomen's User Group)
Hello, my name is Mervat Salman, a UCoC Facilitator, Trust and Safety team.
As you know, the WMF Board of Trustees ratified the Universal Code of Conduct early in February. That's the beginning; the policy itself cannot be used if the enforcement pathways are not defined. The implementation and enforcement of the UCoC requires the continuous cooperation to define clear definitions of enforcement pathways and processes. This needs to be done in a way that does not contradict with the internal bylaws and codes of conduct currently in place, but rather to support them and complement their deficiencies, if any.
In this phase of the process, we would like to invite you to share your ideas, thoughts and concerns about the UCoC implementation, reporting and enforcement pathways using this survey:
Notice: This survey will be conducted via a third-party service, which may subject it to additional terms. For more information on privacy and data-handling, see the survey privacy statement <https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/UCoC_Affiliates_Survey_Privacy_Statement>.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact msalman-ctr@wikimedia.org.
Best regards,
Mervat (WMF) 17:00, 9 April 2021 (UTC)

Wikisporadic Newsletter: August 2021
[edit]Wikisporadic, an Occasional Newsletter for our Germinating Community.
- The Wikipore Day Unconference was held in July, with about 20 participants - see etherpad. A suggested path forward is the "movement tactic" of regular collaborations, like a Spore of the Month or a Feature of the Fortnight.
- Some newer proposed projects at Wikispore: STARDIT (using mw:Extension:Cargo), Works Spore, WikiCite. (Comment on their talk pages!)
- On Saturday August 14, there will be a Wikimania lightning talk on Wikispore and Innovating Free Knowledge at , followed a few minutes later by an unconference group session for Wikimedians Innovating New Genres.
(You can subscribe/unsubscribe from future notifications for the Wikisporadic Newsletter by adding or removing your name from this list.)
Feedback on any of these items is welcomed at your friendly Wikispore Greenhouse!

Wikimedia CEE Online Meeting 2021 submission
[edit]Dear Shani,
On behalf of the Wikimedia CEE Online Meeting 2021 programme committee, I am pleased to inform you that your submission "Implementing Wikidata in Educational Institutions: CEE Challenges and Opportunities" has been accepted as a lecture, and it was scheduled for 10:05 (UTC) on Sunday, 7 November (see the draft schedule). If you have not yet registered for the conference, please follow the instructions on this page. In case you have any additional requests or questions, do not hesitate to contact me or any other committee member.
Best regards.--Kiril Simeonovski (talk) 09:15, 21 October 2021 (UTC)

Board elections
[edit]Hello. User:Sj and myself are group contact for the Wikimedian for Offline Wikis UserGroup. In July, our UG will participate to the vote to select the 6 people short-list of candidates. If you find the idea agreeable, you are warmly invited to share your thoughts with the group members, either on the talk page of the group or on our mailing list. Note that this is not an obligation of any sort, but simply an option to get our UG to know you better. Thank you for your interest. Anthere (talk) 18:29, 18 May 2022 (UTC)

- Thanks, @EpicPupper. We are discussing this proposal and we'll get back to you. Best, Shani Evenstein. 16:40, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
Will you please consider answering all the Board election questions in writing?
[edit]Greetings, Board of Trustees candidate! I'm asking all of you to please consider voluntarily answering all of the community-submitted Wikimedia Foundation elections/2022/Community Voting/Questions for Candidates, instead of just the six top voted that the Elections Committee is asking you to answer on video.
Please see here if you are willing to indicate your agreement.
I'm also hoping you might respond to all 35 Election Compass Likert statements instead of only the 15 most endorsed. Thank you for considering these requests. New4Q (talk) 22:26, 26 July 2022 (UTC)
I have created Wikimedia Foundation elections/2022/Community Voting/Questions for Candidates/Sorted with an invitation for candidates' written answers there. I plan to do something similar for all the proposed Election Compass statements, including any removed from the endorsement list to which someone objected, but I will wait until after August 4 so we know how to sort them. Wikisporadic Newsletter: September 2022
[edit]Wikisporadic, an Occasional Newsletter for our Germinating Community.
- Oral knowledge We held a session on oral knowledge and Wikispore as part of Options Space at Wikimedia Summit 2022 in Berlin, looking at options with several African affiliates to link out to cultural topics from Wikipedia(s). Some African communities are already doing oral knowledge documentation like the Nigerian community working on oral history as well as the growing Mozambican community working on oral history documentation in Makhuwa language. This is a way to provide more sources as well as digitize some oral parts of their history.
- Wikidata integration There is a plan to install the new UnlinkedWikibase extension, advancing the vision of Wikisprout and full Wikidata integration such as use in infoboxes.
- Movement strategy Using the Cargo and related extensions on Wikispore, work is underway to create a demo of Movement Strategy activities, adapting Baserow data from Wikimedia Summit.
- Halloween event As a Wikidata 10th Birthday event, there is hope to collaborate at the end of October with Wiki Cemeteries User Group on Grave Spore (see discussion), for maps and in-depth coverage of individual graves.
