Deleting page

I wish to delete this page, Grants:IdeaLab/Upgraded Blocked User Reinstatement System, that I created, but I am unsure how to do this. I tried using speedy deletion but it was taken down because there is a full take page. What are the other methods for deleting pages and how do I go about using them? Somebody has created an account using info@wikimedia.org email

The account DogDogg has been recently created based on info@wikimedia.org email. This was discovered by OTRS members, who use to receive OTRS messages on the said email. What is the policy, should this user be blocked? Thanks. CC Silenzio76 based on initial discussion. Gikü (talk) 12:21, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

Well they obviously don't control that address, which means they have self-compromised their account if it is true, they should be asked to log on and change their email address. — xaosflux Talk 03:53, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

How to participate if Discussions are being moved 3 Times

I know that it is important to Keep order about where what is discussed, but if a discussion is moved, couldn't a link to the new discussion as well as to the old one be mandatory? In this way if a discussion is moved twice it would be possible to provide a link to the current discussion as well as to the original. Also if the discussion is finally resolved you could find all the old ones and mark them as resolved too. Why this is here? Because my original suggestion was moved 3 times. ~~+~ —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 78.51.132.169 (talk) 12:10, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Click Through Picture

Hi, I dont know a lot about Wiki-Style, but I know how to upload a picture. But I need to link a website to the picture, but I have no idea how to do so. So when I Click a picture, I want to direct it to another website. My 2nd question is how to link a picture to another Wiki-Page, is that possible?

Thanks in advance. Charrel —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 78.51.132.169 (talk) 18:01, 24 January 2010 (UTC)

I was having problem creating new page in my wiki and I installed reinstalled three times to get same error back. According to this tutorail here "http://os.cqu.edu.au/courses/guides/gsmw/" a link to ' create page' should come up when we search a non existent topic, but in my case only 'help' shows up. not only that when i click on some of the links, it takes me no where. I am not sure where I went wrong. This is another way of creating new page "http://www.example.net/index.php/ARTICLE" where article is topic of my new page but

I do this.... it shows blank. SO I am assuming I ve gone wrong in config but I couldn't locate this. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 131.181.251.67 (talk) 23:48, 18 March 2010 (UTC)

Odd numeric function problem

I'm writing or rewriting a article in Spanish, but I want to make automatic calculation in FUSION temperature for a periodic table elements, in other words only enter Kelvin temperature, and automatically calculate Celsius temperature. And I can if I was writing English Article, but Spanish use "," (comma) as decimal separator and not "."(period) like English spokers use to.
Thats work if P_fusion=500.5 (English form of numeration)
{} K ({{#expr:{}-273.15}} ºC)
But does not work if I use P_fusion=500,5 and the other number is 273,15
{} K ({{#expr:{}-273,15}} ºC)

Te problem is that I trying to rewrite a Template, and every article that use the spanish notation for decimal numbers will have problems. And it's common that every number write almost in spanish use "," as decimal separator. And I think that not english languages use "," as decimal separator, because we use SI as Metric System —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 190.130.129.21 (talk) 01:28, 11 March 2012 (UTC)

ImageMap Problem with Text afterwards

Hello,

we am currently working on a MediaWiki about the event-driven process chain standardisation called www.epc-standard.org At the moment we are looking for extensions that may help the user experience. For that reason we want to use the ImageMap feature.

We are running the following versions: MediaWiki: 1.27.0-alpha PHP: 7.0.12 (cgi-fcgi) MariaDB: 5.5.53-MariaDB-1~wheezy ICU: 4.8.1.1

So the actual problem is that after I create a ImageMap, the followling text till the next footnote will be a link to the ImageMap Image. You can the this at the main page (https://www.epc-standard.org/collaborate/Towards_EPC_standardization) in the first Topic.

The code around the ImageMap:

"

Error: Image is invalid or non-existent.

"

The event-driven process chain (EPC)...

I have no clue, what problem it may be and I would be happy if somebody has an idea.

Searching for specific features

Hello good people!

I am looking into MediaWiki for at project but I would like a specific feature.

I would like to create a base template used on multiple pages. When changes are made to the template I'd like the used sites to inherit it. The template should only contain headers and tables with basic information and then I'd like to add information into the table on the pages.

Is this possible? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 87.116.22.2 (talk) 07:07, 27 September 2018 (UTC)

Self Promotion on Wikiversity?

Hello. Is self promotion or personal gain ever allowed on any Wikimedia projects? On Wikiversity the idea that some forms of self promotion and personal gain might be appropriate in an educational setting apparently can't even be discussed because Wikimedia Foundation prohibits it on Wikipedia and ALL of Wikipedia's sister projects? Is this True? Would policies needed to be changed here on Meta for some forms of self promotion to ever be acceptable on Wikiversity? How can policy changes at the Wikimedia Meta level happen? Where can they be discussed? I only ask this because in brick and mortar university settings some forms of self promotion are acceptable, and I think it would help Wikiversity thrive and really benefit all of humanity if policies were different. Thanks. Cheers and Limitless Peace! Michael Ten (talk) 01:23, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

Request for suggestions on "Advertise your project!"

Creating a Project page at https://meta.wikimedia.org was suggested by Eman235! of wikipedia. A page at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiDerivations has been created.
Facing certain issues, however. I didn't/couldn't (the reason is mentioned below) follow the mentioned route:

 1. Create an account and a user page on this wiki, so people can address questions to you.
 2. Create a page describing your plan: enter the project name in the box below and click the button.
 3. Link to your proposal from this page, below.
 4. Advertise your project! Good places to do so are on the Wikimedia Forum and the wikimedia-l mailing-list.

I first proposed a project, went on with it and created the project. The link is already mentioned earlier. Also follows later on, within this very post.
helpme I would've liked to create an account, but since it is a global account, I was afraid it might remove my Wikipedia User and Talk pages. So I haven't created an account and a talk page in wikimedia.
Since I didn't create an account, I can't follow the next steps after I created a project proposal page. Following the direction given:

 1. Link my proposal to the List.
 2. Advertise my project.

On these I therefore would like to learn. Seek help to learn.
I found that at the suggested url, if a link to the Section, New Projects, is posted, it creates a link with a phrase Special:MyLanguage inserted between https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/ and /WikiDerivations, whereas my link is straightforward: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiDerivations

Any suggestions?
The following part solved:Further, My Username in Wikimedia at the top of https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiDerivations is in Red. Also, hovering the mouse cursor on the username area says: Your user page (page does not exist)[.] Bkpsusmitaa (talk) 10:16, 10 December 2018 (UTC)

Proposed global block most unwelcoming to a new editor

Hi. I have over the last three weeks made many edits to many wikipedias which have been helpful, and repetitively requesting advice from other editors. I have been now suggested for global block because of one mistake i made "sockpuppetry" on 12.12.2018 - I did this because I didn't have the password to my old account and it was a closed email, and also I wanted my conflicts of interest to be clear.

I was honest from the start, and then English blocked me, well that's fine. But I then told all the other wikis what happened on English and they're perfectly fine and supportive of all my translations which have come at high cost to my person.

Why on earth has no one actually considered this or read any of the discussions? This I think is against all of the policies of welcoming new users.

Now just "global block for sock-puppetry" - why on earth? This is abuse of power in my opinion. E.3 (talk) 13:38, 25 December 2018 (UTC)

Also I note that my editing of the Tok Pisin wikipedia appears to be confusing. i contend that we let them decide that. I know thier culture far better than most other people in the world. E.3 (talk) 13:40, 25 December 2018 (UTC)

Finally, if you had not been so thouroughly unwelcoming when you had the russian freedom of panorama wrong, I probbaly would have improved MANY of your articles by this time. E.3 (talk) 13:48, 25 December 2018 (UTC)

I suggest that you stick to just a single account, wait for 6 months and then apply for unblock. See en:Wikipedia:Standard offer. Ruslik (talk) 20:17, 25 December 2018 (UTC)

E-Mail-Adresse @ Wikimedia-Projekte / Email address @ Wikimedia projects

Deutsch

English

Hello, per default single sign-on is activated for the sister projects. I can use local values (Wikipedia, Wikivoyage and so on) otherwise use central values from Meta-Wiki. But I can't use local email addresses with a global user account, right? Thanks & greets --Smarti (talk) 02:13, 13 January 2019 (UTC)

Global user page: Send email to user

For each wiki there exists a special page to contact user by email as far as I know (e.g. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:EmailUser plus user name). When I want to create a global user sub site, is there a possibility to include this contact form or link it in a flexible way? The global page should be inherited and customized at each wiki. So, is there a variable for local wikis? Thanks in advance. Bye --Smarti (talk) 02:46, 13 January 2019 (UTC)

Filme über den 2. Weltkrieg

Warum sind die Filme über den 2.Weltkrieg , die aus der UDSSR ,Jugoslawien , und anderen osteuropäischen Staaten kommen , rot unterlegt und die Seiten nicht verfügbar ???? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 3 Sternekoch (talk) 18:11, 9 February 2019 (UTC)

Moving a page from another Wiki

Is there a way to move a userspace page from another Wiki here to meta that preserves its page history? I realize I could just copypaste the thing, but I feel its origins are important. Darkfrog24 (talk) 22:46, 20 March 2019 (UTC)

As en.wn is not configured for transwiki import, the source wiki should do export to an XML file, and then this wiki should import that file. Perhaps listing the page name(s) is appropriate to confirm that this wiki is willing to import. --Gryllida 23:55, 20 March 2019 (UTC)
I consider it important to preserve the edit history. There was an accusation involved and this is a record of what really happened.
How do I Special:Export? Or do I have to ask someone else to do it? Darkfrog24 (talk) 00:32, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
The record of what happened remains available for consultation for administrative purposes regardless of deletion. It seems unfair to meta to use it as a storage area for a redundant copy. --Pi zero (talk) 03:16, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
Then undelete the essays and I'll keep them on Wikinews. If not, well, they cover conflict resolution techniques inspired by Wikinews but they'd work elsewhere as well.
Okay, figured out that Special:Export was a link, and it looks like it does what I want it to do. Trying to see if it will work with a Wikinews page... Darkfrog24 (talk) 03:42, 21 March 2019 (UTC)

You should use your main account to request help not from a bot account. You cannot edit the userpage of User:Xinbenlv bot because on Meta not all users are allowed to modify other users' userpages and there's a filter to enforce that. Therefore you should make the edit while logged in the bot account, no need of any settings. –Ammarpad (talk) 11:27, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

Suspicious accounts with Chinese characters created in Basque Wiktionary

Sorry for writing about this issue here, I am not sure where exactly should I be reporting this. Please send me to where this should be posted and I will do so as soon as possible.

Hello all, I wanted to reach you with an issue that worries me. For the last year a total of 39 suspìcious accounts were manually created in Basque Wiktionary, all of them named with Chinese or Japanese characters: (List of suspicious accounts)(List of recent manually created accounts) (Basque language has nothing related with these languages or with their characters). These accounts have made not a single edit nor any kind of activity inside our project, and looking for their overall Wikimedia accounts, the only project in which they are registered is ours. It makes me think they could be used in the future with malicious purposes, although it surpasses me to know how. I have not blocked any of these accounts as they have shown no reason for that action to be taken yet. I also have not made any further research about this situation more than what I have told you here, however I am sure many of you might have already become aware of this suspicious activity in other Wikimedia projects, and could know the reason behind this or how to proceed or what protocol to follow to face this. Thank you in advance, --Bengoa (My user talk) 13:18, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

I have email permission to share on Wiki the web archives of an elderly archivist, which email should I send it to please?

Does this archivist actually own the copyright? Or the materials are in public domain? Ruslik (talk) 16:58, 1 October 2019 (UTC)
My understanding is Yes, most of the material is clearly submitted as Own by ex pupils, school booklets for example, but I do understand and appreciate your question - for example if a pupil submitted a 1951 panoramic picture of the school pupils do they Own it? I myself traced such a photography company for a 1978 photo, enquired, but got no reply so where does that leave me? Also, the site www.eyemead.com/open.htm has been published many years. There is no previous copyright claims to my knowledge. Any advice appreciated! Gedgmoss (talk) 09:14, 2 October 2019 (UTC)
The archivist can only own the copyright if former pupils transferred it to them by a written contract. From your answers it is clear that this has never happened. Ruslik (talk) 20:22, 20 October 2019 (UTC)

Advice on "WikiProfessionals Inc" and other profile-management companies

Hello,

I received an email from someone at "Wiki Professionals Inc." I went to the company website and realized it is in no way linked to Wikipedia/Wikimedia. Can someone please tell me if this company is reputable? I am looking to research companies/consultants that manage page edits and creation of new pages that are trusted by Wikipedia/Wikimedia.

thank you Lara — The preceding unsigned comment was added by International CCS Knowledge Centre (talk)

@International CCS Knowledge Centre: Hello. You don't need to pay anyone to be able to edit Wikipedia; you can do it yourself. There are a few policies and guidelines - sometimes called "rules" - that you should consider when creating articles. I suggest using w:en:Wikipedia:Article wizard, while also considering the conflict of interst. I have personally never heard of this group ("WikiProfessionals Inc."), but generally, people must disclose that they have been paid to edit Wikimedia projects (read more at w:en:WP:DISCLOSEPAY). Not doing that may result in a block, as well as deletion of articles. So, if you still want to pay someone to create a page for you, you should consider asking them if they disclose that they have been paid to edit. We have had many cases, editing articles with different accounts and not disclosing their paid contributions; they've been blocked and sometimes banned from the English Wikipedia, and most (maybe all) of their articles have been deleted - see w:en:Orangemoody editing of Wikipedia for example.
In general, I think it's not a good idea to pay someone to create/edit your Wikipedia page, especially if they are going to break Wikipedia "rules". I strongly suggest reading w:en:Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies). If your company/organization is not notable according to Wikipedia guidelines, articles about it will be deleted, no matter who their creator is. Ahmadtalk 20:52, 11 February 2020 (UTC)

Border

If you write the background becomes white and a 1px border is placed around the file. Is it possible to add a 2px border and not have the white background in Special:Search? This means that files with transparent background will stay transparent. I would like this added to User:Jonteemil/global.css in that case. Thanks!Jonteemil (talk) 17:26, 3 March 2020 (UTC)

You can change the thickness and color of the border by overriding the definition of 'thumbborder' class. Ruslik (talk) 13:24, 4 March 2020 (UTC)

valve turning

i am shocked there is no page for this yet. i dont do much on wikipedia, but hopefully someone knows how to get a requested page started... just to clarify: https://cldc.org/valve-turners/

You are on a wrong forum. This is not English Wikipedia. Please, ask on en:Wikipedia:Help desk. Ruslik (talk) 13:03, 4 March 2020 (UTC)

Dealing with user who keeps adding poor quality articles to foreign-language Wikipedias

There's a user from the Thai Wikipedia who keeps creating poor quality machine-translated articles on dozens of Wikipedias whose languages he does not know. He has already been advised to stop, and has promised to stop, but still continues said behaviour. He does have fairly good contributions on his home wiki. What would be the best way to approach this? --Paul 012 (talk) 00:41, 19 February 2020 (UTC)

Is this user blocked on any wikis? Ruslik (talk) 13:55, 19 February 2020 (UTC)
Not currently, no. He's received warnings on some wikis, and a few of the created articles have been deleted, but most of them seem to have gone under the radar. --Paul 012 (talk) 14:37, 19 February 2020 (UTC)
This is still ongoing. User:Ruslik0, do you have any further suggestions? Or perhaps is there a better place to ask? --Paul 012 (talk) 15:03, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
Only to wait until the user is blocked on a number of projects. Ruslik (talk) 20:22, 16 April 2020 (UTC)

How to learn how to make templates

Hi, where can I find a tutorial, book or something like that to learn how to properly create and edit templates? I am an administrator of sc.wiki, and although we have managed to work, up until now, by adapting templates from other wikis, this has left us with an uneven structure, a patchwork that sometimes gives us problems that are quite annoying and take a lot of time to solve. We would like to resolve this issue.--L2212 (talk) 00:51, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

I think that you can use mw:Help:Templates. Ruslik (talk) 20:20, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
Ok, thank you very much! I will take a look at it as soon as possible.--L2212 (talk) 02:09, 24 April 2020 (UTC)

Essay

I've written a couple of essay drafts in my userspace here on Meta that I think could help Wikiprojects. What is the process for submitting them to the community so they they stop being a my-userspace essay and are listed as belonging to the community? I acknowledge (of course) that this means other users will be given the green light to make changes to them. Darkfrog24 (talk) 14:32, 23 April 2020 (UTC)

If its topic is appropriate for Meta, you can just move it into the main space. Please, do not forget to add it to Category:Essays and to use the essay banner. Ruslik (talk) 20:29, 25 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks. I remember checking to see if Meta hosted similar essays about a year back, but I'll check again just to be sure. Darkfrog24 (talk) 00:28, 26 April 2020 (UTC)

Inappropriate information and internal governance

On a smaller Wikiproject, I saw someone make a public talk page post that included speculation about another person's medical history. That Wikiproject does not have a written outing policy, and the WP:OUTING on the English Wikipedia does not include medical talk, but the post seems very inappropriate to me, the kind that should be deleted and not just reverted. I've seen milder posts deleted before. What I also see here on Meta is the policy that Wikiprojects are self-governing.

It is a very small Wikiproject, and the social dynamic is different from larger projects. It's early in the process but if the admins there decide to ignore this problematic talk page post, am I correct in thinking that there is no other recourse, and asking elsewhere will just waste everyone's time? Darkfrog24 (talk) 14:02, 25 April 2020 (UTC)

If it contains private information, it can be oversighted. Ruslik (talk) 20:30, 25 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the link. I'll read it regardless. EDIT: I just read it and it looks like Wikimedia stewards do have the authority to perform oversight on comments on smaller Wikiprojects. (The project in question is not named on the list the way the English Wikipedia and Finnish Wikipedia are.) My concern is making sure the comment is reasonably likely to be considered appropriate for oversight removal before bothering the stewards with this.
It contains speculation about private information, on the order of "I think this person has [specific mental health diagnosis]," with an "I think" type statement. It's also pretty darn rude, but if that were an oversight matter, they would be very overworked. Darkfrog24 (talk) 00:02, 26 April 2020 (UTC)

Who to contact regarding User rudeness

Who do I contact regarding a User whose feathers I seemed to have ruffled, when I tried to update/correct a place name spelling, from the Soviet era spelling to that which is the current and proper and current spelling being used by most of the world. I even referenced the current government website, which lists current placename transliterations... Which must've offended a certain User, who sent me a message, about having me blocked if I do it again! I don't appreciate being bullied, especially when my intention was to update and better Wikipedia content! Do I contact legal? Thank you, because this is a primary reason of why I rarely bother to edit. Thank you again. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by XTOC6 (talk) 20:13, 2 May 2020

Editing Wikipedia is a collaborative work so you have to be prepared to accept feedback and engage in discussion if your edit is questioned. It seems you you've already started that. You should be patient with that discussion and explain to them why you edit should stay. – Ammarpad (talk) 08:18, 3 May 2020 (UTC)

Dutch Wikinews

I have some questions for the Dutch Wikinews:

 • Is it possible to set the 'New Wikitext editor' as default editor (instead of the traditional editor), if there is consensus among the contributors?
 • Is it possible to enable the 'cite' function (to add easily sources of information) in the New Wikitext editor?

Greetings, --Astenas (talk) 00:07, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

This editor is currently a beta-feature. I doubt it is wise to enable it as the default editor. Ruslik (talk) 14:31, 9 May 2020 (UTC)
But why the 'cite' function doesn't work? Astenas (talk) 13:57, 10 May 2020 (UTC)

I have previously set up 2 factor authentication; now I have a new device and don't know what to do

I have a TOTP authenticator app. I have 2 factor authentication enabled. I have a few scratch codes left. The part I don't understand is how do the part where I get a QR code to scan with my app. Help, please? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 199.133.54.168 (talk)

The basic help

The basic help, for a newbie as me, it is to know where ask a question or suggest improvements for Meta-Wiki (as Cafe in Witionary, Teahouse in Wikipedia and so on). Finally, I could see it in the top of this page.

On the other hand, what about a newbie: namespace?.

The suggestion I wanted to put in the right place is: I need a "Add item to Wikidata" link in the lateral panel (left panel) in Tools (as in Wiktionary and other sisters). It would be in all sisters.--BoldLuis (talk) 11:44, 17 May 2020 (UTC)

All improvements in Meta-wiki should be suggested on Meta:Babel. Ruslik (talk) 20:43, 17 May 2020 (UTC)

Maybe a bug (Files on the Indonesian Wikiquote)

So I'm on the Indonesian Wikiquote. I uploaded this file on there (to the right), named File:Wikipedia Bahasa Indonesia beranda.jpg, which is, of course, redlinked. It is there in Commons (at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia_Bahasa_Indonesia_beranda.jpg) but is redlinked and does not exist on any other wiki, as you can see on the right.

I think this is a bug with Commons or the Indonesian Wikiquote. Can someone help? Dibbydib (talk) 07:38, 23 May 2020 (UTC)

Strange indeed, it looks like all new files uploaded on Commons shown as redlinks now. Reported on Phabricator. Anyway, now while writing this I can see your linked file here. Stryn (talk) 10:23, 23 May 2020 (UTC)

User rights logs not working as expected

Why is it that I cannot see the user rights logs entries on the Konkani sites: [1] and [2] , but I can see the entries here: [3] , [4] and [5] ? The Discoverer (talk) 08:11, 1 June 2020 (UTC)

@The Discoverer: This is because the logs are stored where the changes happen. Since these changes were made here on Meta, that's where the logs are stored, while if a bureaucrat or sysop changes any rights locally on the Konkani Wikipedia, it will appear in the local Special:Log/rights on the Konkani Wikipedia. I remember someone wanted the global rights log changes to be reflected in the local logs as well for transparency, but I don't think that wish has had a high enough priority that anyone has tried to make a fix for it yet. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 12:55, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for this explanation, Jon Harald Søby :) - The Discoverer (talk) 13:00, 1 June 2020 (UTC)

How to handle cross-wiki disruption

Hello. I'm looking for advice on how to handle cross-wiki disruption.

This has come up in the past, but this was prompted by Commons:Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by VivekAdivasi. These images might be within the scope of Commons, but they are being used inappropriately to add unsourced information to multiple Wikipedias. For example, based on machine translation, this edit at KO appears to be very inappropriate, but that's just one example, and I don't generally trust Google translate. Another complication is that the IP making this edit was blocked by checkuser at EN, but not at KO (it's a mobile IP).

Any advice, either specific or general, is appreciated. Grayfell (talk) 22:43, 10 June 2020 (UTC)

Another very inappropriate edit was made here: History of the article corresponding to Mongoloid at MN. Koji979 made an edit of +1119 (the 7th from above), which was reverted because of machine translation, then he apologized for the machine translation and inserted the map. The English translation of his text can be seen at this edit (I don't speak Mongol, but I suppose the text to be identical because the references to sources at bioXriv are the same), where he also inserted the map (in the 3rd paragraph of the diff, the text at the bottom of the diff). Similar edits were made by Koji979 and by IP's at more than a dozen different Wikis. --Rsk6400 (talk) 14:45, 11 June 2020 (UTC)
