@787IYO: I would like to ask you to check whether all the settings on the above proposal page are appropriate. Project namespace and Project talk namespace are empty now. --Sotiale (talk) 04:37, 16 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
Also "west Africa" is not a valid timezone. * Pppery * it has begun 05:14, 16 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
Also I have set our timezone which is GMT +1.787IYO (talk) 20:37, 16 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
That's still not the right format (it should be a country/location pair listed in w:List_of_tz_database_time_zones. I'm just going to assume you want w:List of tz database time zones#LAGOS. * Pppery * it has begun 23:20, 16 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
I have checked and have made the necessary inputs to the settings. 787IYO (talk) 20:36, 16 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
Still doesn't look quite right. "Project talk namespace" should normally be some constant prefix or suffix applied to the project namespace, but here "Fere Egan" has nothing to do with "Wikipedia". Them differing is technically possible, but it is weird. (Also you haven't set a logo, but that's fine - it will just default to the logo for the English Wikipedia). * Pppery * it has begun 23:24, 16 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
Good day, I have done as requested, please check and see if there is any more information needed. Regards 787IYO (talk) 10:19, 18 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
@787IYO: 'Project talk namespace' should be 'Wikipedia talk'.. Please correct it right now. --Sotiale (talk) 12:08, 28 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
I have done as requested. 787IYO (talk) 22:25, 28 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Request for Approval of Maithili Wiktionary

[edit]

I would like to bring to your attention that the Maithili Wiktionary meets the criteria for approval as per the Wikimedia Language Committee’s guidelines. The project has sustained activity, meets localization requirements, and serves a significant linguistic community.

Since the project is still awaiting approval, I kindly request the committee to consider its approval at the earliest. Your support in this regard will be highly appreciated by the Maithili-speaking community.

Looking forward to your response. DevGeekStar (talk) 09:27, 1 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately, you have no other contributors except for your contribution this month, and it was completely inactive until March 2022, when you became active. It is not possible to approve it at this time, but it can be approved if you can continue the project with enough of your colleagues. --Sotiale (talk) 15:20, 29 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Campidanese Sardinian elligibility

[edit]

Dear LangCom, I'd like to propose a reevaluation of Campidanese Sardinian, specifically Wp/sro, elligibility status, basing myself on the third requisite for elligibility, under the Language proposal policy: «The language must be sufficiently unique that it could not coexist on a more general wiki. In most cases, this excludes regional dialects and different written forms of the same language.». In this case, I argue that, since a Sardinian Wikipedia exists, and Sardinian is considered (at least taking into account SIL's ISO 639-3) a macrolanguage, a more general wiki already exists and is capable of accomodating Campidanese (check this for instance). — Garcez (talk) 14:16, 7 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Pinging some people that might be interested: @Liuxinyu970226, @L2212, @OoswesthoesbesGarcez (talk) 14:19, 7 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
I'm not a member of the Langcom, so I have no influence over this. Instead, I'll ping User:MF-Warburg, a more active member who can put it forth on the mailing list. --OosWesThoesBes (talk) 14:23, 7 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the ping, I also support the reevaluation for the reasons that were also explained on previous discussions on the matter (here: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6). In short yes, Campidanese, Nugorese and Logudorese are just different orthographies of the same language, often used alongside others like LSC for one or more of the many dialects of Sardinian. The Sardinian Wikipedia already has rules and templates to use all of these orthographies, and the people that use the Campidanese one write there. The Campidanese incubator is populated by a single editor that does not even speak the language, and is creating hundreds of copy-pasted articles (with empty sections, few informations and many, many orthographic errors) to transform Sardinian into a "constellation of wikis". Before the arrival of that user, the incubator had exactly 0 articles for years. There is no need to have separate wikis for different orthographies, and that would instead just damage the sc.wiki project. L2212 (talk) 19:58, 8 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
Agree with L2212, the eligibility of Campidanese, a dialect of Sardinian should be consider to revoked, as well as Votic. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 02:37, 10 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

It has been about 3 months since the current state of sufficient activity has been maintained, so I think you need to show more whether the activity is continuous. I believe that if the current activity is continued, it can be approved. Thank you for your efforts. --Sotiale (talk) 15:17, 29 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Sotiale is there any thing that we need to improve, cause i see that tagalog wikisource is approved recently. Thank you Agus Damanik (talk) 05:49, 18 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
I started a discussion about approval because I thought your project met the requirements for approval at the time I initiated that thread. However, none of my colleagues responded. The only advice I can give you is to increase the number of pages from the current number and to keep active. I will send a reminder email to start the discussion again. --Sotiale (talk) 08:42, 18 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Request for Apporval of Minangkabau Wikibooks

Hello Language Committee, the Minangkabau Wikibooks project has been active for 6 months and the community would like the project to be approved. The request for the approval has been made here. Thanks Zhilal Darma (talk) 08:41, 17 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

I am feeling very positive, but I need some time to review some factors, and I am busy right now. I plan to try to review it this weekend if possible. --Sotiale (talk) 08:46, 18 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
I understand, thanks for response. Zhilal Darma (talk) 10:11, 18 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
Discussions for approval have just begun. Good luck. --Sotiale (talk) 12:38, 28 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hello Zhilal Darma, if I go on your Main Page, I don't see any links to the existing books. In this state the wiki is not really useful to readers, I think. Could you add a listing of existing books? --MF-W 12:57, 28 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hello @MF-Warburg @Sotiale, thanks for response. I have added the existing book list on the Minangkabau Wikibooks Main Page. Zhilal Darma (talk) 06:42, 29 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
Please translate all of the 'Most important messages' section on this page. This is very important as it is a prerequisite for approval. --Sotiale (talk) 15:25, 29 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hello @Sotiale, all of the 'Most important messages' sections on this page have been 100% translated. Thanks Zhilal Darma (talk) 14:00, 30 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Ancient Greek is a “living”, “L2-speakers-only” language according to SIL

[edit]

Respected Sirs and Madams,

Hi!

Last year, we discussed the admissibility of an Ancient Greek Wikipedia. Amir E. Aharoni sent an e-mail to SIL (the organization which manages both ISO 639 and Ethnologue, as you know), asking to clarify why they classify Ancient Greek both as an “historical language” and as a “living language” (I have not "unarchived" our 2024 conversation because it was very long; let me know if I should do otherwise; for those who might want to read it again, it was titled “Classical languages”).

Since I did not receive any news, I have also tried to write to SIL, asking some questions, and they confirmed that “‘historical’ language does not imply ‘extinct’”. They also provided me with this Ancient Greek language card: grc language status is “code 9” (“second language only”), while “extinct” would be represented by code 10.

Here is their definition of code 9:

"Second Language Only status. While there are many languages that are used as second languages by large populations of speakers, the phrase “Second language only” is used to identify a specific category made up of those languages which are used as second languages but have no L1 speakers and generally weak or secondary ethnic or identity associations. These may include languages of special use, such as languages of initiation, languages of interethnic communication, liturgical languages, as well as cants and jargons. Most often these languages are given a status of EGIDS 3 (Wider Communication) but are identified in this way as well because of the absence of L1 speakers."

On the one hand, it is true that no one speaks just Classical Greek and no “modern” language; on the other hand, SIL is a bit too hasty when it describes the contemporary use of Ancient Greek as just "religious". In fact, Classical Greek is also used by classicists as a vehicular language: Today, it is possible to find classes taught in Classical Greek (even online, e.g. this reading and commentary in Classical Greek of the Apology of Socrates); it is even possible to learn other languages through Classical Greek, such as Ancient Persian: this is particularly interesting, because it is difficult to find classes of Ancient Persian even in “modern” languages.

For these reasons – along with those I have already expressed in 2024 – I’d like to ask you to revise your restrictive policy towards Classical Greek, and to admit the theoretical possibility of an Ancient Greek Wikipedia (maintaining firm that it must meet also the other admissibility criteria, before final approval). Thank you very much for your attention! Anaxicrates (talk) 18:07, 3 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
