Wikipedia essentials
Step two of the student toolkit is about Wikipedia essentials. In this step, the students will gain a basic understanding of how Wikipedia works. Moreover, they will recognize the significance of Wikipedia as a platform for sharing knowledge and develop research, critical thinking, and writing skills. They will also gain a deeper understanding of the WikiWomen Project’s goals.
The contents of this step are divided into three topics: Wikipedia culture, reliability and objectivity and citation on Wikipedia. Regarding Wikipedia culture, it is important to note that for each language that Wikipedia is available in, a different group of community members administrate this. Thus the manner in which administration is carried outdiffers greatly depending on the language: for some (larger) Wikipedias, whole teams of people administer the contents, whereas for smaller Wikipedias there is only a handful of people who do this in their free time. When starting to write on Wikipedia, it is important to take into account the people on the other end of the computer who work on Wikipedia with you and it is important to treat everyone with respect.
