We welcome you to place a bid for hosting WikiConference India 2016. The bid consists of two rounds. The first round will be a simple round to encourage participation. The aim of the first round is to confirm the local community support and strength. The first 5 qualifying cities of the first round will participate in the second and final round of bidding with an elaborate plan.

First Round Bidding Criteria

  • City and proposed venue. This city should have at least a domestic airport.
  • Wikimedia signatures of active Wikimedia projects editors who commit to be involved in organizing this in your city.
  • Link to local village pump where the bid has been approved with community consensus (not mandatory but highly recommended).
  • Proposed overall budget to conduct an event with 500 registered participants (including the accommodation cost for 100 scholarship recipients for 3 days).
  • Prior experience conducting similar event(s)

Please do note that bids need to be supported by consensus from the community and the link to the discussion where this is forthcoming may please be indicated.

Nashik is an ancient city of India, located in the north-west region of Maharashtra. It is the administrative headquarter of the Nashik District and Nashik Division. Nashik is one of the most important cities of Northern Maharashtra. Nashik, in Maharashtra, is situated at a distance of 200 km from Mumbai (Bombay) as well as Pune. The city has become the center of attraction because of its beautiful surroundings and its cool and pleasant climate. Nashik has a personality of its own due to its mythological, historical, social and cultural importance. The city, vibrant and active on the industrial, political, social and cultural fronts, has influenced the lives of many a great personalities. The river Godavari flows through the city. Nashik has developed into an industrial, agricultural, religious, tourist, and educational center in north western Maharashtra.

Apart from successful companies, various startups are based in Nashik providing smart solutions related to the field of data management and Internet of things. Many social technologies related initiatives have been established in the city best example of which is Kumbhathon.

Most important to us, however, is the safety of the attendees. Attendees can come to Nashik and expect a safe and pleasant trip. The best example of Nashik’s competency was the flawless execution of the Kumbhamela.

Travel and transportation Details

The nearest airport is the Ojhar airport, situated at a distance of 20 km from Nashik.
Nashik railway station is one of the major stations of the Central Railway. There are a number of trains that connect Nashik to other cities and towns. The railway station is located at such an area, which is easily accessible from different parts of the city. Nashik is 185 km from Mumbai and can reach through NH-3 via Thane-Kasar-Igatpuri. Nashik is 220 km away from Pune. There are several private luxury video coach and state buses available between Nashik and cities like Pune, Shirdi, Aurangabad and Mumbai. Maharashtra State Transport buses connect Nashik to distant places of Maharashtra.

Auto rickshaws are readily available in the city with reasonable fare. Taxis, sumos, public and private buses are also available in the city.

By Air

By Road

To Reach Nashik by road, you will not only find state transport services but also private buses and other vehicles such as taxis. To get there, you either have to travel around 166 km from the city of Mumbai or 209 km from the city of Pune by road.

By Train

Railway station of this city is considered as one of the most important railway stations in Central Railway. Therefore, every train passing through that region stops at Nashik.

Wikipedia Workshop

Wikipedia Workshop:

Wikipedia Workshop was an initiative to bring community together to improve and edit Nashik page on Wikipedia so as the people visiting Nashik will get handful of information about the city. Along with the textual information, the community came together to click photos of Nashik and upload it on Wikimedia. These project was implemented under the supervision of User:AbhiSuryawanshi and Local Co-ordinator Santoshi Tiwari User:SantoshiWiki along with her Wikipedia Nashik club team.

Kumbhathon:

Kumbha Foundation is an organization which worked for the Holy Kumbh-Mela in Nashik. The community driven organization which started off with a few innovators and ideas to ease Kumbhmela- a large gathering of people, with the help of technology. Kumbathon successfully has implemented many projects during kumbhamela. Millions of people were expected to visit Nashik for attending holy kumbhmela.

Smart City Ideation Program:

The Maharashtra government has selected Nashik among 10 other cities in the state under the 'Smart City' project. Nashik Municipal Corporation and Kumbhathon came together to organize an Ideation program in Nashik. It was again a community effort. Different class of people came together to discuss Challenges and ideas to make Nashik, A smart city.(smart-nashik-ideation-program)

Thank you for supporting and encouraging Nashik Bid. As for the connectivity issues, Nashik is fairly equidistant from the north and south cities of India. Also it is just 128 kms away from Mumbai (by train). If travelling becomes an issue, how can we expect Wikipedia to reach remote areas?
Having the conference in a city like Nashik is a great way to do Wiki outreach.

Duty chart

Our work will be evenly distributed among large committee of around 36-40 volunteers which involves 20 online volunteers and 20-30 offline volunteers. We will work with national volunteers to designate tasks. Local team as well as kumbha foundation will provide on ground support. Kumbha foundation is a large organization and it will provide facilities and work hand. The roles will be widely divided as organizing committee,media and publicity committee, Travel and accommodation commitee, Security committee, Help desk committee, Food committee, Hospitality committee, Fun and Filler committee etc.

  • Punjabi Community is one of the fastest growing Indic communities right now. We know that this event being organized to access our performance and that we hope to apply for a Wikimania in India soon.
  • This will be a first of its kind conference in North India. Southern communities have been doing many events and conferences. This will be a chance to activate communities in North India and to build a strong Indian community.
  • Punjabi Wikimedians has recently received recognition from Wikimedia Foundation as the first User Group in Indic languages. We are a group of dedicated Wikimedians who are motivated by their love of Punjabi language.

  • Dr. Manavpreet Kaur represented Punjabi Community at Global Congress on Intellectual Property and the Public Interest, December 15-17, 2015.
  • Punjabi Wikimedians are going to organize a meetup in early January to select a delegate to represent the organization at Wikimedia Conference, Berlin from 22-24 April 2016. We will also be facilitating Wikimedians in filling their applications for Wikimania 2016.
  • Satdeep Gill, Charan Gill, Dr. Manavpreet Kaur and Nachhattardhammu have completed #100wikidays challenge. They were the first among Indian Community to complete this challenge successfully. Right now, Nachhattardhammu has started this challenge for the third time and Parveer Grewal, Bhairupa Satwinder, Gaurav Jhammat and Stalinjeet have taken the challenge as well.
  • Punjabi community members participated and helped in organizing Wiki Loves Food. At least 13 new images were uploaded by Punjabi Wikimedians during this contest.
  • One of our Wikipedians in Canada, Sukhwant Hundal is a Professor of Punjabi at University of British Columbia. Each year he gives credit based assignments to his students to write Wikipedia articles. Last year he had 8 students and this time 13 students are going to do that.
  • Paramjit Kaur is a Punjabi Wikipedian from United Kingdom. She works mainly on articles related to Punjabi culture and folklore.
  • Punjabi Wikimedians User Group received official recognition from Wikimedia Foundation on 18 November 2015. We have been doing various events and workshops before that as well.
  • Punjabi Community participated in Wikipedia Asian Month and two editors with more than 30 articles were chosen as Wikipedian Asian Ambassador from the Punjabi Community.
  • We have been doing collaborations with other Wikipedia Communities such as Afrikaans-Punjabi Collaboration and Esperanto-Punjabi Collaboration. We are also planning an edit-a-thon Saanjh to strengthen the bond between Punjabi Wikipedia and Western Punjabi Wikipedia communities.

We recently organized "Punjabi Wikipedia Two-Day Workshop" at Chandigarh, in which 15 active editors of Punjabi Wikipedia were given scholarships to attend the event and around 20 new editors joined from Chandigarh. We had many presentations and sessions on Basic Wiki Editing, ProveIt, HotCat, Content Translation, Visual Editor and other tools as well. We worked real-time and created 44 articles plus 18 entries on Punjabi Wiktionary as well.

We have also done many online competitions and edit-a-thons which have helped in improving Punjabi Wikipedia. Some of the examples are:

Upcoming Collaborations with International Communities

We believe in making a united Indian sub-continental community and we are helping in organizing collaborative edit-a-thons with communities from Nepal and Pakistan.

  1. Saanjh (15th January 2016 to 31st January 2016) is a collaborative edit-a-thon between Punjabi Wikipedia and Western Punjabi Wikipedia.
  2. Nepal-India Wiki-Friendship Edit-a-thon aims to improve the relationship between the Wikipedia communities from both the countries.

Workshops in Chandigarh

  • We are planning to have at least one Wikipedia workshop at the host institute to get students acquainted with Wikipedia. We can choose interested students to volunteer for the event as well.
  • We are planning to organize at least 5 workshops in educational institutes in Chandigarh to ensure more participation.
  • We also plan to do some workshops in other regions of Punjab which will help in attracting more participation in the Conference.
  • We expect to create more than 100 accounts during this period.

Wikipedia Indian Month, 2016

Wikipedia Indian Month, planned to be organised in April, 2016, is a month-long Edit-a-thon in all Indic language Wikipedias, in order to learn about the diverse cultures of India. It will help build collaborative relations and increase communication among different Indic language communities. Wikimedia communities from other countries are also welcome to participate in the event. This event is inspired by the successful completion of Wikipedia Asian Month, 2015, where Wikipedians from all over the world joined hands to build articles on Asia in their respective languages. Wikipedia Indian Month aims to involve more than 100 participants from 10 Wikimedia communities from all over the world and create more than 1000 articles in respective languages.

  • We will be having meetings with different organizations and institutes with hopes of possible collaborations:
  1. Panjab Digital Library has digitized a lot of books and many of them are in public domain. We will try to collaborate with them to get those books on Wikisource.
  2. Language Department, Punjab has published many important books. We hope to collaborate with them to get their content in Creative Commons License.
  3. We also plan to educate publishers about the benefits of CC licenses.

Ahmednagar is a small and equi-distant centralised place with educational hub city and Pune airport is just 3 and half hour away, Pune airport to Ahemadnagar taxi services would be easily available. Five majior districts of Maharashtra are equidistant namely Pune, Aurangabad, Nasik, Jalgoan and Bid besides Wai in western Maharashtra which is main place for Marathi Wishvkosha hub of encyclopedic writer of Marathi is also just a four hours journey from Ahmednagar.
Besides Ahemdnagar is easily accessible by trains from all corners of India since trains to Ahemednagar ply from Dhanbad, Nagpur, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Chennai, Goa, Delhi and many more places.
As location importance of the location is concerned is near by from education hub Pune, Ahemednagar is known across India for few things Ralegan Siddhi a successful model of village development Ralegn Siddhi of Anna Hazare is just an hours journey so as religios places like Shirdi which is well known for Saibaba, Besides one of the first literary acomplishment in Marathi language Dnyaneshwari was written by Sant Dnyaneshwar at Newasa in Ahemednagar district. Newasa is known for its archeological importance too. At the same time brief encyclopedia of Indian History "The Discovery of India" was written by India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru during his imprisonment in 1942–46 at Ahmednagar Fort.

WCI 2016 host city selection announcement

WCI 2016 host city selection announcement

The five member panel of jury nominated by the Wikimedia communities of India at large, has assessed all available information from the bids presented for conducting and successfully completing the upcoming Wikimedia Conference India - 2016 and from several interactive sessions through the internet relay chat, has asserted to choose CHANDIGARH as the winning host.

Of the three bids, the one from Ahmednagar was rejected at an early stage for lack of sufficient documentation and presentation. The remaining two cities showcased their bids in an attractive and thorough manner. The Jury adapted several parameters as shown below. Weightages are given in parentheses:

  • Thoroughness and degree of realistic projections demonstrated through the bid (6%)
  • Additional Financial support and cost efficiency (10%)
  • Available Infrastructure and logistics as projected (23%)
  • Previous Experience in conducting large scale Wikimedia-related events (10%)
  • Accessibility and facilities for inbound travel from different parts of India (6%)
  • Strength and dedication of the actual field team on ground (25%)
  • Potential outcomes to the advantage of Wikimedia movement in general and participating Indic communities in particular (15%)
  • Perceived Risks of abandoning, postponing or cost over-running of the program (5%)

The jury has appreciated the tireless efforts put into the bids by both teams viz. Nashik and Chandigarh. According to the individual members of jury, both bidders have scored neck-to-neck in each parameters. Chandigarh came up with a score of 72.91 % against a runner-up score of 69.69% by Nashik.
