27 (talk) 05:24, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

Turkish Wikipedia problem
[edit]Hi, I do not know English. Turkish Wikipedia is growing problems. Solution required. I'm not happy.--İncelemeelemani (talk) 22:37, 27 November 2012 (UTC)
- RFC is disfunctional in general. In the last four year, I only remember one instance when the problem was actually resolved. Just forget it. Try to solve the problem within the project. If it is impossible, but the majority is still unhappy - fork the project and leave WMF. Sorry, I can not suggest any better solution. This is how things look now.--Ymblanter (talk) 08:33, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

Global sysop
[edit]Who is this global sysop who "consistently fails to demonstrate understanding of basic principles of Wikimedia projects"? Might be useful for him or her to know that there are concerns with what they are doing ;-) Ajraddatz (Talk) 14:16, 26 February 2013 (UTC)
- Not you, do not worry. Well, they know they have issues, and they know my opinion about it, and I think pushing it more would be stalking. I am not prepared at the time to request the desysop, so I decided to keep it as general as possible to illustrate the point.--Ymblanter (talk) 22:09, 26 February 2013 (UTC)
- Fair enough. When you posted the comment an outcry went out among a few of the global sysops, so I though I'd better check up on their (and my) behalf :P. I would recommend ensuring that the person knows, though - I know of cases where someone thinks that the person knows of the concerns, but they actually don't. Thanks, Ajraddatz (Talk) 00:22, 27 February 2013 (UTC)
- I will think about it. Right now I do not immediately see how I can do it without causing more drama, and I do not want drama (and actually I hate drama). If I come across some reasonable way I will do it.--Ymblanter (talk) 11:45, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

Fundraising translation feedback
[edit]Hey Ymblanter,
I wanted to ask for your help. As you may be aware we have been running banners on many language wikis. We have a lot of new content this year and I really want to conduct a thorough review of our translations. This is a combination of feedback from the community, readers, donors as well as those with professional translator experience. This will help us ensure the highest quality of translations used in our messaging.
To help us out with this I wonder if you would be willing to give us feedback for Russian using This Link
Simply follow the simple instructions on that page and if you have any questions feel free to contact me on my talk page.
Many Thanks

Letter petitioning WMF to reverse recent decitions
[edit]The Wikimedia Foundation recently created a new feature, "superprotect" status. The purpose is to prevent pages from being edited by elected administrators -- but permitting WMF staff to edit them. It has been put to use in only one case: to protect the deployment of the Media Viewer software on German Wikipedia, in defiance of a clear decision of that community to disable the feature by default, unless users decide to enable it.
If you oppose these actions, please add your name to this letter. If you know non-Wikimedians who support our vision for the free sharing of knowledge, and would like to add their names to the list, please ask them to sign an identical version of the letter on change.org.
I'm notifying you because you participated in one of several relevant discussions. -Pete F (talk) 22:25, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

“Not be blocked on more than one project”
[edit]Hello Yaroslav.
The last time I explicitly requested your real-time help was in March 2014, but now I have to do it again.
Please, make some sympathetic comment at Wikimedia Forum #“Not be blocked on more than one project”. Not to say I’m afraid of mockery by stewards and other Meta regulars, but if they mass-pissed on this idea, then it may be recorded as “rejected by the community” which would create negative future consequences. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 16:01, 26 April 2018 (UTC)
- I am no fan of SergeyJ, but he was merely replicating dickish habits of ru.Wikipedia because was not familiar with better examples. Don’t put much blame on this single person, please. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 16:37, 26 April 2018 (UTC)
- Well, you know my relations with the Russian Wikipedia but it would not be possible to block someone there who never contributed.--Ymblanter (talk) 16:40, 26 April 2018 (UTC)
The bblack side of en.Wikipedia
[edit]You should see this not to have involvement with any piece of the muck Incnis_Mrsi dug out. But to be more cautious next time, bragging about alleged incredibly high discipline among en.Wikipedia admins. The site initially was on a higher level of civilization than e.g. Commons, but en.Wikipedia all but lost its ancient appeal of transparency and accountability. Not far away into the future and it will converge with ru.Wikipedia and so on. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 17:14, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
- I never ever do two things - go into CU business and OTRS business. I believe I will live longer if I do not mind their business.--Ymblanter (talk) 19:43, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
- Everyone here chooses what to do—or do not—relying on own criteria. No problems with it. You may ask me to intervene into stuff which is connected to check-user busyness; but of course never in ru.Wikipedia. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 19:43, 7 June 2018 (UTC)

You can vote from November 16 to November 30. To keep the number of messages at a reasonable level, I won’t send out a separate reminder to you about that. /Johan (WMF) 11:24, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
USB-C - cross-wiki vandalism
[edit]https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q20026619&diff=777699801&oldid=777670376
You protected the page in the vandalised state. Maybe you can fix the descriptions for
- Swiss German
- Indonesian
- Spanish
? "USB Type-C" is an alias, not a description. And in German (incl. Bavarian) the common name is, as in English, USB-C. 77.0.218.248 15:38, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
- Why do not you discuss this with the user you were edit-warring with?--Ymblanter (talk) 16:50, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
- He tricked another user into deleting the talk page: fr:talk:USB Type-C [1] and vandalized Wikidata. You protected his vandalism. He tricked a further user into deleting the WD talk. On several other Wikipedias his requests for talk page deletion were denied. And all but lvwiki reverted his page moves. The most vandalized item that remains is the Wikidata item. 77.0.218.248 21:42, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
- That's true, I requested deletions (and the one on fr wiki was done) beacause you only post fake numbers about USB related subjects in goal of POV pushing. --Niridya (talk) 21:56, 1 November 2018 (UTC)

looking for your experience with images
[edit]You seem to be really experience with images so I'm hoping that you can give me some clarity on two items.
I've been wanting to add an image to a page, but I can only find 4 and not really happy with any of them. This is the page Nicolle Wallace and this is the link I get for searching https://tools.wmflabs.org/fist/fist.php?doit=1&language=en&project=wikipedia&data=Nicolle+Wallace&datatype=articles¶ms%5Bcatdepth%5D=0¶ms%5Brandom%5D=50¶ms%5Bll_max%5D=5¶ms%5Bcommons_max%5D=5¶ms%5Bflickr_max%5D=5¶ms%5Binclude_flickr_id%5D=1¶ms%5Bwts_max%5D=5¶ms%5Bgimp_max%5D=5¶ms%5Besp_max%5D=5¶ms%5Besp_skip_flickr%5D=1¶ms%5Bgeograph_max%5D=5¶ms%5Bforarticles%5D=noimage¶ms%5Blessthan_images%5D=3¶ms%5Bdefault_thumbnail_size%5D=¶ms%5Bjpeg%5D=1¶ms%5Bpng%5D=1¶ms%5Bgif%5D=1¶ms%5Bsvg%5D=1¶ms%5Bogg%5D=1¶ms%5Bmin_width%5D=80¶ms%5Bmin_height%5D=80&sources%5Blanguagelinks%5D=1&sources%5Bcommons%5D=1&sources%5Bflickr%5D=1 The only one close is the top one, but it's less than ideal. Any ideas on how to find more?
I thought you'd be a good person to ask because I came across you for removing an image on Maryse Ouellet. If you look in the history it says you removed it from Commons. But then a user added it back. When I do a search for images that image still appears and appears to show it still has a good license.
Can you clarify/help me any? thx Mike
- The top image is pretty clear copyright violation, do not upload it. It just looks like there are ne free images of her available. This is unfortunate, but very little we can do about it. Some people write to the subjects asking for a free image, but this typically works pretty badly - the subjects usually have no clue in copyright policies, they could send a picture taken by someone else which is in fact not free, and this picture could be deleted.--Ymblanter (talk) 10:21, 8 March 2020 (UTC)

Re: Cost of open access
[edit]Hello, I noticed your comment. Making one's work open access doesn't cost a dime: depositing your work on an open repository, even with a free license, is generally possible for free, with any publisher.
For more information: https://cyber.harvard.edu/hoap/How_to_make_your_own_work_open_access
See also how we helped make 3000 works open access without the authors spending a cent: https://blog.okfn.org/2017/10/26/how-wikimedia-helped-authors-make-over-3000-articles-green-open-access-via-dissemin/
Please don't propagate the myth that open access is a cost for authors. That's one very specific kind of open access, the APC-powered gold open access model, which is not the most prevalent and is definitely not necessary. Nemo 15:44, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
- Everything I published since 1996 is in the open repository, which is arxiv.org, and accessible to the general audience. We are repeatedly told this is not good enough, and that we will have at some point go to the gold access model. Btw deposition with free license is not compatible with the publication in top journals in my field.--Ymblanter (talk) 15:54, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
Nomination for Movement Strategy Transition Design Group
[edit]Dear Ymblanter, we had a call for regional nominations for Design Group to develop a plan for inclusive transition process from the movement strategy recommendations to the implementation. User:Yair rand has nominated you to be the representative of the Central and Eastern Europe region. In my understanding you are not really active in the CEE collaborative, yet you could bring a valuable insight regarding engagement of the online contributors. I would like to know if you would be generally interested in the participation or rather not.
The task will be to work with a diverse group of people from across the movement to design how the process of online events will be set up.
- The nominee should be familiar with the Wikimedia movement, interested in strategy, and ideally an active online contributor from the projects OR from an underrepresented community.
- The work is scheduled to begin with orientation next week and planned to conclude at the beginning of August.
- During this time, the group will meet 5 times virtually for two hours each time, and there is expectation to carry out some asynchronous work in between meetings.
Thank you for your kind attention and please let us know what you think! --KVaidla (WMF) (talk) 08:29, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
- @KVaidla (WMF): Thank you Kaarel. Yes, I would be interested to participate. The whole idea of nominating me last minute was that I am very active in the projects (also cross-project) but not with affiliate, my participation may add a missing perspective, and there were no CEE candidates anyway. I do have some boundary conditions for the meetings (I have a full-time job), but I guess anybody has and I am not unique.Ymblanter (talk) 08:40, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for such a swift reply and confirmation! There were some CEE candidates nominated by peers in the regional Facebook group, but their availability was not confirmed. At the same time I see how your perspective will be of value in the discussions and would help us improve the transition process. There will be boundaries of different kinds for participation across the group and we will try to overcome this and accommodate the needs. We will be in touch hopefully later this week regarding how we will proceed with the Design Group. --KVaidla (WMF) (talk) 09:01, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
- Great, thanks. That was not at all my intention to take somebody else's place; if there are issues because of this I have no problem not being part of the group, but generally I think my participation will hopefully be useful.Ymblanter (talk) 09:05, 23 June 2020 (UTC)

I have a question about this: Is there an actual speedy deletion process on this small wiki? I wouldn't expect one. AnotherEditor144 t - c 23:54, 19 March 2021 (UTC)
- There are no administrators there, and no community either, the project is esentially dead. I am dependent on the stewards. So far they deleted pages I marked for speedy, though sometimes with a large delay and after reminders on MetaYmblanter (talk) 07:09, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
Unblock
[edit]
Unblock request granted
This blocked user asked to be unblocked, and one or more administrators has reviewed and granted this request. Request reason: I am presumably hit by a range block. The block ID is #424705, imposed by Sakretsu. I am on holidays for a week, and will leave on Saturday. Presumably the range block can not be lifted before that, so would you please globally lock Alice7777 who is a cross-wiki spammer (I have learned about the block when I was trying to report them). Thanks.--Ymblanter (talk) 19:02, 22 July 2021 (UTC) Unblock reason: see below This template should be archived normally. English | español | français | italiano | 日本語 | 한국어 | Plattdüütsch | Nederlands | 中文 | edit |
- Now I got blocked on sah.wiki as well because my IP is apparently an open proxy. In the meanwhile, the cross-wiki spammer was allowed to continue, and my user page there is currently vandalized.--Ymblanter (talk) 05:50, 23 July 2021 (UTC)
- Lessened the block locally, and granted IPBE. You will need to pop over to SRGP to get global IPBE. I will look at the other pages and the user. If you are getting globally vandalised at small wikis, then let me know as I have a filter that sort of acts like soft protection. — billinghurst sDrewth 09:56, 23 July 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot @Billinghurst:. This is my last night at this accommodation (Schenna, South Tirol, Italy, for the record), and I hope this is not going to happen again accidentally this very night, but I will have this in mind in case I will encounter similar issues in the future.--Ymblanter (talk) 17:59, 23 July 2021 (UTC)

- Yes, I have already written at your talk page: I was under understanding that I am reverting the LTA, and my comments were directed at the LTA, not at you. My apologies.--Ymblanter (talk) 16:59, 26 November 2021 (UTC)

The IP is blocked for another 7 days, and has only been editing on that IP for 2. I think it's best to wait to see if they're on the same IP after the global block lets up before applying anything longer locally. Best, Vermont 🐿️ (talk) 20:33, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
- Sure locally there is even an admin, and they already had their talk page vandalized. I assume at some point they will take care of the IP. I just needed an immediate action yesterday and another one after an unblock today, and the stewards have clearly seen this. Ymblanter (talk) 20:45, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
