Total articles: 94 Interested communities: 3 Interested individual participants: 21 Participants: 20 In-person event: 1 (Indic-Wiki-Imrove-a-thon on the theme of Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav of Wikimedians of Santali Language User Group

Obstacles
  • It's difficult to plan a suitable activity and involve communities in this kind of event.
  • Communities or individuals have a lot of things to participate and it's quite difficult to engage them everywhere.
Learning
  • 20 days long improve-a-thon went well due to brilliant editors who never ask for the event appreciation or recognition.
  • Santali community organised an event under the improve-a-thon. The community organised this event for the very first time after the lockdown. We realised these kinds of activities should be planned wisely for the language communities.

Indian Community Capacity Development[edit]

What?

A2K is working with Indian communities closely and A2K realised after COVID-19 communities progressing very slowly. This is an idea to boost communities and start taking initiatives for their own activities, growth and development.

Why?

A2K is working with Wikimedia communities very closely from the beginning. A2K is concerned about the growth of the communities and realised there is a need to focus more towards the Wikimedia movement in India. Communities need to take initiative to encourage more people and they have to initiate.

How?

A2K has tried to engage communities by scheduling some calls with user groups. There is page A2K that has started Indian Community Capacity Development, however, it is still under construction, is a program which is inspired by the Community Capacity Development program. The program was run by Asaf (WMF). CIS-A2K is following the initiative and trying to implement it in India. Community Capacity Development was an initiative that aims at identifying needs and ways to build capacity in different Wikimedia communities and then initiating specific actions to build specific capacities in specifically interested communities. CIS-A2K is also doing the same efforts with Indian communities and User groups. A2K has done calls with two user groups, the Odia user group and the Santali user group. A2K is working on making communities comfortable and sharing their problems and issues to sort out. A2K is focusing on their activities, growth, leadership, building capacity and etc. The program is for all Indian communities who want to work for their growth and want to make a strong user group. The program is going on with user groups or communities separately and the page will be completed after the first in-person meeting with a minimum of one community.

Links to approach communities:

Obstacles
  • COVID affects their energy which takes time to get active again
  • Communities are not much ready to put their energy into this due to their own personal reasons or commitments

Plan for second half of program year[edit]

  • Mini edit-a-thon: At least two content enrichment online/offline activities/mini edit-a-thon on the National level for all the language communities. This is a strategic activity to engage communities for two days so they can write collectively on the same topic and at the same time. Thorugh mini edit-a-thon communities feel enthusiastic because it takes only two days for editing. Within next six months A2K will organise ~2 mini edit-a-thons.
  • Photowalks: A2K did not organise any Photowalk activity in the first half but for the second half there will be 2 photo walks activities to encourage the communities to bridge the visual content gap via capturing photos and upload on Wikimedia Commons.
  • Indian Community Capacity Development In-person Meetings: A2K will conduct minimum two in-person meetings under Indian Community Capacity Development program with a user group to resolve their issues, to note where the group needs A2K's support and plan their future activities for their group. The effort is for the good health, growth and development of the group. It will consider any editing activity or training session as well.
  • Women Month Celebration: The month of March is a women month and there will be a special event on Women's History Month to encourage more women editors and increase content related to women. We will encourage Indian women to get together and meet with each other on the special occasion of Women's Month. There will be a one more activity to encourge new female editors and conduct workshop for them.
  • Diff posts for sharing the Stories: A2K will publish atleast 4 diff posts for the A2K learning stories and will try to notify the communities about A2K's work elaborativly.
