CN Banner

[edit]

I don't know how it is organized (or who takes care of the banner) but the 2018 translation chaos (asking me to do the copypaste) could have been avoided by use of Translate Extensions. Translation extension allows the translators to use familiar Translate extension and CN admin just need to click "(Publish, approve, or something like that)" to make it into the system. There were changes in how CentralNotice operates (Meta:Babel/Archives/2018-11#Changes to CentralNotice Access and the new "CentralAdmin-only protection") so it might be worth considering migrating for the future. — regards, Revi 09:28, 7 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

WAM 2019 banner on central notice

[edit]

Hi! I was one of the organizers of WAM on Spanish Wikipedia in 2017 and 2018, and again this year. I have a question about the central notice. Should we apply for it or will there be a common application for all languages participating? Another question is about the tool for evaluation, and this is the same question. Should we ask for it? Thanks! Millars (talk) 22:08, 2 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Expand and update articles

[edit]

We suggested from German Wikipedia to give points for updating and expanding articles, because there is a big need for suc work, even more than for new articles. --J. Patrick Fischer (talk) 21:50, 5 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

@J. Patrick Fischer: Unfortunately This year we don't have any input in Article Expansion. If the community wishes to have it's own prize it can have it on its own. WAM has prize for just new Article creation this year. Maybe next year as the Fountain Tool gets updated we can have this possible. Thank you for understanding. --Tiven2240 (talk) 14:53, 1 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia Asian Month 2019 in Bashkir Wikipedia

[edit]

We have been participating in the marathon since 2015 and we have many stub articles. According to the rules of the marathon, only new articles participate in the competition. But we would like to improve the existing stub articles. Let us know if you will consider improved articles? --ZUFAr (talk) 18:18, 12 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

The marathon is big enough, as it is. I recommend staying in this format. We can work all year round with our stubs and hitting local competetions as well. Therefore, stay in this format! It is perfect, as it is! Amici sumus, Deryni (talk) 21:10, 30 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

Hello, will this contest run? It's almost end of the month, and there are basically no info on the page besides a list of participant wikis. :) huwiki joins the first time, and I have questions about the tool and the overall process of the contest but the subpage for organisers is empty... A Wikipedia-wide banner announcing the start of the Asian Month?

[edit]

Last year there was a banner visible throughout all Wikipedia language versions announcing the start of the Asian Month. @Seddon (WMF): would you be willing to recreate a banner again (just the same one as last year, because the logo hasn't changed, but with "2019" instead of "2018")? Using wikidata to analyse submissions

[edit]

I really like the stats page from 2017. Are there any expertise involved who might be able to use Wikidata to organise submissions by theme (e.g. biographies, places, events, etc) or for the biographies some stats about dates of birth, places etc? New article in Waray Wikipedia as entry to the 2019 Wikipedia Asian Month

[edit]

Good day! I just created a new article in the Waray Wikipedia (here) and I wish to send it as entry for the 2019 Wikipedia Asian Month. But I found out that the Fountain tool only accepts new articles in the English Wikipedia. I would like to ask if the Wikipedia Asian Month only allows new (Asian-topic) articles in the English language or if it could accept entries from other languages. Thanks! —Nairb.Idi9 (talk)

@Nairb.Idi9: There seems some issues with the tool. It will be fixed soon. Stay tuned. --Tiven2240 (talk) 17:03, 5 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

word count controversies

[edit]

@Ле Лой: Hello, we got some complaints that the Fountain tool apparently counts words wrong in Hungarian. For example hu:Hanamaki repülőtér is deemed to have 227 words by Fountain but if I copy-paste the text (excluding templates, infoboxes and citations etc.) into Word, it gives me a word count of 341. Is it possible to understand how the algorithm defines "word"? Thanks a lot. Teemeah (talk) 13:53, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

  • Teemeah, Fountain only counts characters and words in coherent text, not in tables, quotes, lists, footnotes, headers and comments. Word includes these ones (except for comments) in its count, hence the difference. Le Loy 22:24, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Ле Лой this still does not account for the difference. It seems like that Fountain ignores much of the written text, too. We cleaned up the text, clearing off all templates and headers etc. and it still doesn't give the correct word count. Teemeah (talk) 15:01, 8 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Oh gosh, lists, too? That's wrong though... Sometimes it is clearer to list certain things in an articles than to write them into sentences. In any case, then, it seems that converting the list part back to normal fluid text solved the counting issue in Fountain. I would very much advise to rethink this restriction. If an article only contains a list, the jury can still disapprove it, but this discriminates other articles that may have a small portion of a list included. Teemeah (talk) 15:11, 8 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Questions from User:Wei4Green

[edit]

Hi, committee and all organizers of WAM. I contacted both User:Ле Лой and User:AddisWang for help as an organizer, but I think organizing my questions here would be better (all questions are in bold to navigate clearly). I have multiple questions to ask...

...as an editor (Quotes from Wikipedia Asian Month 2019/Organiser Guidelines#Rules):

  • The article is newly created by you (i.e. not expanding stubs) between November 1, 2019 0:00 and November 30, 2019 23:59 (UTC). What if there are both an article and an approved draft of the same topic created by different editors? Who is the real creator of the article (or topic in this case)?
'Approved drafts' are not participating in WAM. Le Loy 22:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
But what if the creator of the approved draft got his/her draft approved and replaced the existing article earlier?
Only new articles are accepted. If someone tries to submit an article that they haven't created, Fountain won't let them. Le Loy 01:55, 8 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • The article should be at least 3,000 bytes and at least 300 words in length. (exclude Infobox, template etc.) Which requirement excludes the templates, etc.? The 3,000-bytes or the 300-words requirement? Does it also exclude HTML tags?
The 300-word requirement excludes templates etc. The word count is done automatically by the WAM tool (Fountain). Le Loy 22:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Done
  • The article should not be a list. Could the article be a disambiguation-like or list-like article (e.g. en:Elizabeth (given name))?
No. Le Loy 22:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Why? Aren't they also articles?
Because the contest is organised this way. And no, they are not articles. See en:WP:DPAGE. Le Loy 01:55, 8 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • The article should be about any topic concerning an Asian country. Could the article be about multiple Asian countries and/or territories?
Yes. If your language edition doesn't have articles like 'Asia' or 'Indochina' or 'Mekong river' they all can be created for this editathon and will be deemed 'on-topic'. Le Loy 22:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
What about international relations?
Same. Le Loy 01:55, 8 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

...as a potential organizer for Simple English Wikipedia, English Wikipedia, and/or Chinese Wikipedia (Quotes from Wikipedia Asian Month 2019/Organiser Guidelines#Preparation and Wikipedia Asian Month/QA#Organizing):

  • Before 27 October 2019 . . . Post an invitation message on the village pump, Community bulletin board, mailing list, or even make a Site Notice, around two weeks before it starts. I only signed up for organizing Simple English Wikipedia's WAM contest today, so what should I do to make it more visible than ever to editors on Simple English Wikipedia?
Post an invitation message on the village pump, Community bulletin board, mailing list, or even make a Site Notice :) Better late than never. Le Loy 22:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
How do I make one of those WAM banners that appear on top of articles?
CentralNotice/Request. Le Loy 01:55, 8 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • A tool for keeping track participants' progress shall be available here (hosted at Tool Labs). What title, code, and project name should I fill out when I add a new project?
Look at the other editathons: English one has 'Wikipedia Asian Month 2019' as the title, 'asian-month-2019-en' as the code and it's held in en-wiki. Simple English one would have 'Wikipedia Asian Month 2019' as the title, 'asian-month-2019-simple' as the code and 'simple' as the project. I can see there's a bug that doesn't allow to type 'sim' in the Project field but you can copy-paste it from here. Le Loy 22:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
I typed in what you said, but why does the title field show that "[Wikipedia Asian Month 2019] already exists"?
Ah, right. Because it does :) Try 'Wikipedia Asian Month 2019 Simple' or something similar. Le Loy 01:55, 8 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • Could I organize multiple contests? Could organizers participate as an editor to win? Could organizers approve their own article entry?
Yes, yes, yes. Le Loy 01:55, 8 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
The jury should include some experienced editors who can check if submitted articles adhere to the rules. Invite them by writing to their talk pages and add them as jury members once they agree. Le Loy 01:55, 8 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

German banner

[edit]

„Dieser November ist der Wikipedia Asien Monat“ is poor German. First of all it has always been „Asiatischer Monat“ and unlike in English you cannot put a „Wikipedia“ first in German (or it has to be „Wikipedia-Asien-Monat“). It would have been better „Dieser November ist Asiatischer Monat der Wikipedia.“ „Nimm am Wettbewerb teil und gewinne eine Postkarte aus Asien.“ is imperative mood so there has to be an exclamation mark at the end. NNW (talk) 14:21, 9 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

@NordNordWest: where did you find seen the banner. Is it central notice or site notice? --Tiven2240 (talk) 17:58, 9 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Changed as NordNordWest suggested above. Stryn (talk) 18:17, 9 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Organizing WAM2019

[edit]

Hello, greetings from Assamese Wikimedia Community,

As you may know, Assamese-language Wikipedia is currently organizing Project Tiger 2.0 editahon. We as a small community don't have a lot of editors and the same few keep participating and organizing all the editathons. Since we are bit occupied with Project Tiger 2.0 now, we somehow missed out and didn't decide to organize Wikipedia Asian Month 2019. However, we have organized it earlier in 2015 and 2016 and would like to do the same this year as well. Will it be possible for us to organize it right after the Project Tiger 2.0 ends (which will end in January 2020)? I understand that it will be 2020 by the time Project Tiger 2.0 ends and I am not even sure if we will be logically able to call it Wikipedia Asian Month 2019. Looking forward to your feedback and suggestions. --SlowPhoton (talk) 09:52, 11 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

@SlowPhoton: we are happy to inform you that Wikipedia Asian Month and project tiger 2.0 writing competition has a partnership with each other. You can run both contest together on a wiki. Articles made for Wikipedia Asian Month can be added to project tiger 2.0 writing competition. You are entitled to get both prizes. This is almost on every indic Wikipedia and all have accepted it. Hope your community too accepts it and y'all too join like the other indic Wikipedia communities. Feel free to discuss any issues. Regards. --Tiven2240 (talk) 14:15, 11 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Tiven2240: I am aware of that, but we almost lost half of the month now. As we were occupied with Project Tiger 2.0, we somehow ended up not organizing WAM 2019. So now we are interested in organizing a dedicated Wikipedia Asian Month 2019. Please let us know if it is possible after Project Tiger 2.0 ends. --SlowPhoton (talk) 14:35, 11 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

You are requested to update information at Wikipedia Asian Month 2019/Ambassadors and Wikipedia Asian Month 2019/Status. Hope this helps. Thank you --Tiven2240 (talk) 09:57, 15 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Tiven2240: What's the status of this? Participants on fiwiki are starting to wonder when and how the address collection will happen. The instructional message I got after WAM said the collection rounds were scheduled for December 22 and 27, but I've found no updates on this anywhere, and apparently at least on fiwiki, participants have not received any links for the address collection. --Lentokonefani (talk) 20:38, 2 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Spanish Edit-a-thon ungraded on Fountain.

[edit]

Hi there, please note no article under wikipedia-asian-month-2019-es is graded on Fountain, although there seems to be 231 to grade, which, when graded, would be an impressive achievement of the community. As of this moment, we won't be able to determine the number of successful participants, hence we won't know who to send the postcard. So if you speak Spanish, feel free to apply here as judge if you will follow the rules and judge those articles fairly, and please spread the word, and let Spanish speaking editors know that their community may benefit from their help. @Ле Лой: please have a look --Tiven2240 (talk) 17:03, 16 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
There is no mistake. I must grade them. I'll do it asap. I'm sorry for that. Millars (talk) 22:15, 16 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Ambassador certificates

[edit]

Do I understand it correctly that Wikipedia Asian Ambassadors will have their certificates sent in paper to the same mail address they provide for the postcards? If so, are the certificates being sent at the same time as postcards or later? --Ата (talk) 13:35, 25 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

Hi Team,

Is there any update or ETA on when they will receive their post cards?

It looks like none of them from Tamil Wiki received their post cards.

Thanks, Dinesh on behalf of Tamil Wiki Community.

Spanish - Questions about the postcard

[edit]

Hello! Sorry for adding myself to the pile of questions about the same topic. I am from Argentina, and my local mail provider is not very trustworthy. I just wanted to know if the postcards have been sent yet.

I don'r really mind if I can't get it yet, but my worries are all about my card getting stolen.

I have sent my address before I had the link posted on my discussion page, but I filñed it twice.

Am I in the list? Was the postcard sent?

May I know what kind of data you want? For WAM 2019, We have a total number of 783 participants who submitted at least one article. Out of those, 470 submitted more than four articles. What's more, our participants have contributed 10135 articles. 9381 of those fits our standard and were accepted. Li-Yun Lin (talk) 14:18, 30 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
