Incomprehensible

[edit]

Self-closed tags now work as in the HTML5 specifications. <b/> is an example of a self-closed tag. Pages with this error have been listed in a tracking category since 2016. They will be listed in Special:LintErrors/self-closed-tag. This doesn't affect <references /> or <ref />.

Vehicles can be used for transport. Cars are an example of vehicles. Defective ink cartridges could be returned to the manufacturer since 2016. They will be recycled. This doesn't affect boats.

Fair enough. Added an example to clarify. /Johan (WMF) (talk) 00:25, 6 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Johan (WMF): now it reads:
Self-closed tags now work as in the HTML5 specifications. <b/> is an example of a self-closed tag. It should be <b>. Pages with this error have been listed in a tracking category since 2016. They will be listed in Special:LintErrors/self-closed-tag. This doesn't affect <references /> or <ref />.
  1. Why should it be <b>? Is it a widely known fact that self-closed tags are morally abhorrent?
  2. "Pages with this error" - no error of any kind has been mentioned so far according to the ink cartridge manufacturer.
I know you don't want to explain the "why" of anything but this just reads as nonsense, just a non sequitur. Vehicles can be used for transport. (Self-closed tags now work as in the HTML5 specifications) People drive cars. (<b/> is an example of a self-closed tag) They should drive trucks. (It should be <b>) Gas station sandwiches have been listed in a tracking category. (Pages with this error have been listed in a tracking category since 2016)Alexis Jazz (ping me) 07:20, 6 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
By the way, <b /> in XHTML is equivalent with <b></b>, not <b> (the latter is how HTML5 interprets it), so to have it the same affect as before, it should be changed to <b></b>, not <b>. However, I’m not sure if we need to go into so much detail in the newsletter, probably there should be a link to mw:Help:Lint errors/self-closed-tag instead. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 10:17, 6 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
I see that link has been added (thanks Pols12). I added another clarification, to make more obvious what the item is trying to say. /Johan (WMF) (talk) 11:21, 8 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Johan (WMF): You removed a translation variable named $code2 but chose not to make translations fuzzy. This means raw “$code2” appears in them without any warning about outdated translation. This should be fixed somehow before distribution. (This affects most translations not marked with pink background on Special:Translations/Translations:Tech/News/2020/24/43.) —Tacsipacsi (talk) 11:32, 8 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I'll go through all translations and fix this before distribution.
(This kind of stupid mistake on my part is part of why I always briefly glance at all translations before distributing them ...) /Johan (WMF) (talk) 11:56, 8 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Johan (WMF): Thanks for the changes, now the text is fully clear. Alexis Jazz (ping me) 13:21, 8 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
Alexis Jazz: Well, thanks for making sure that happened. /Johan (WMF) (talk) 13:29, 8 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Delivery

[edit]

Hi, Johan. FYI, this issue was not delivered and I get a lot of log failure messages with your name on them. IKhitron (talk) 00:28, 9 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

IKhitron: Thanks. Must have been a partial delivery failure because I got my issue not just when testing but also in the actual delivery run. I'll look into this as soon as I can tomorrow. /Johan (WMF) (talk) 02:20, 9 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
Screenshot.
As far as I can tell, IKhitron, this seems to be a local abuse filter issue on Hebrew Wikipedia (and English Wikiversity)? I did a manual delivery/update to the affected community pages on both wikis. /Johan (WMF) (talk) 11:01, 9 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
I see, Johan. Looks like that, at least on hewiki, the problem is in "templatestyles", the word that can be used by autopatrolled only. Where is the #target page? I'll deliver the rest. Thank you. IKhitron (talk) 11:07, 9 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
Global message delivery/Targets/Tech ambassadors has the master list. Thanks! Maybe let the MassMessage delivery bot be autopatrolled to avoid this in the future? /Johan (WMF) (talk) 11:10, 9 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
