List of Wikipedias by page views

[edit]

Here is a beginning of a new kind of statistics, based on the projectcounts files published by Domas Mitusas since December 2007. ISO week numbers are used (as in continental Europe). I don't know if a static wiki page is the best way to present these numbers. --LA2 22:33, 6 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

There is an overflow problem in the Total Views column for the English language, so the number is incorrect. Best regards, Alpertron 11:32, 11 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
I would LOVE to see the numbers for the smallest projects THEY are really relevant if we want to understand the importance of these initiatives.. Thanks, GerardM 11:54, 5 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Language name problems

[edit]

"Central_Bicolano" should not have the underscore; "Emilian-Romagnol" is in Wikipedia as "Emiliano-Romagnolo". - dcljr 06:10, 17 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Talk archived again

[edit]

I've moved all discussion from before 2007-08-04 to Talk:List of Wikipedias/Archive 4. That date was chosen because it was the last date I could find (older than a couple of months) that cleanly separated earlier and later discussion. I took the opportunity to move some "misplaced" sections into their proper (chronological) places. This talk page is still 92 KB in length, but at least it's better than the 162 KB it had grown to.... - dcljr 08:50, 17 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Next suggestion for depth

[edit]

I think the intention of the current formula:

 edits/articles * nonarticles/articles * (1-stubratio)

is pretty good. The main problem I see is the calculation of stubratio. As I understood it this is dertemined by articles/nonarticles what does not make any sense at all in respect to the meaning of "stubratio" and leads to taking into account a the ratio of nonarticles twice. If we have no good measure for stubratio, we should either leave this part of the formula away or replace it by characters/article.

Furthermore I'd suggest not to count images as non-articles, as images in general should be placed at commons, and - if technically possible - substract botedits from the number of edits as they do not improve the article itself in most cases. Käptn Weltall 00:01, 27 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Not counding vandal edits and reverts would be a good idea too. But I'm not sure there's a way to count these out (and also bot edits), at least not at the current stage of development of MediaWiki software. --Smeira, 18:42, 2 March 2008

Developing a sound formula for depth should be the matter of the Mediawiki developers who put it into Special:Statistics. Please turn this issue to them directly. RobiH 19:35, 4 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

I suggest you enter those ideas as requests for changes in the code of Special:Statistics?action=raw into the Mediawiki bugzilla, or ask the developers directly on IRC, #mediawiki on Freenode. It would be better to change the default Mediawiki behavior than trying to calculate more and more complex in an external script that originally just aimed to read Special:Statistics?action=raw of all wikis and compare them. Maybe its good to first get some consensus on the desired changes and then bundle them up as one request on the mediawiki bugzilla. Mutante 19:38, 4 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Seems like we already have a flag for bot edits and a flag for whether the edit is minor. Those flags are not correct in many cases but that a seperate problem. Assumed it was corrected we should be able to get a better count of edits (meaningfuledits = totaledits - botedits - minoredits) without huge changes to mediawiki. --MarsRover 03:24, 5 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Several minor edits are not marked as minor, e.g. no IP edits can be marked minor. Besides lots of editors don't even bother to use this box. Some others use it as standard and then fail to remove the mark when they make important ones. Removing the marked ones would be pretty bad idea. You could even choose not to take into account edits from users whose name starts with "T" and "W" or any other edits randomly... - 78.92.36.36 20:12, 7 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Neither Botedits not Minoredits are currently being counted, unfortunately. If we decide to indeed count them, I suggest to also count Redirects. This would give three more figures in Special:Statistics, and its action=raw version, too. --Purodha Blissenbach 12:39, 11 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
If we wanted to count vandalism reverts, we likely needed another checkbox in edit pages. I believe this to be problematic due to foggy standards, and too prone to abuse. Vandalism ratio is vaguely linked to the size of the user base of a wiki, which goes with the wealth and the internet connectivity of population(s) using a language. Therefore, including the user count appropriately in the depth formula would be a first step towards a refinement without having to go into the details of counting vandalism/reverts. --Purodha Blissenbach 12:39, 11 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
We have to deal with "insecure" information anyway because, as pointed out above, whether or not an edit is marked as "minor" or a certain account is a bot is ultimately in the hands of the user/editor. I think in the end we have to see how to handle the "insecurity" or "probable error margin" in the information -- e.g. by estimating it (how many edits in average are vandalism-plus-revert?) and adding the estimation as a correcting factor to the formula itself. By the way, how would you, Purodha, add the number of users to the depth formula? That strikes me as an interesting idea.
On whether the Special:Statistics page should do these calculations: I think in the end Special:Statistics should give us raw data (e.g. number of pages in all namespaces, number of users, number of admins, etc.) but not more complicated calculations like depth, especially if it ends up involving a correcting factor that one might want to adjust several times. As it is now, Special:Statistics isn't bad -- as long as people don't want to read in it things that aren't there. --83.81.245.220 21:53, 11 March 2008 (UTC) --Smeira 21:58, 11 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Growth stats

[edit]

In addition to number of articles, users etc, I think a useful and interesting statistic would be growth. This could be either monthly, quarterly or yearly % growth, or some sort of new articles/users per day. Given that all the stats you'd need to calculate the growth are already there, surely it would be a cinch to add a growth column to the table? 220.237.171.188 13:45, 13 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Many people consider the value of the numbers of articles as less then useful when these numbers are equated with the importance of a project. I completely agree with this. This does not mean that there is no place for these stats it is just that they are not that relevant. I would consider the availability of stats showing the growth of the readers for a project more relevant. What I would really LOVE would be to have some numbers on the value of the localisation and the number of readers... Maybe even the number of articles as well..
The good news is that there are statistics about the quality of the localisation, now for someone to bring the numbers together ... Thanks, GerardM 11:50, 5 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Remove depth value for the wikies with article count less than 1000

[edit]

The value in the depth column for the wikies with less than 1000 articles (100+ articles) should be removed. Even the inactive wikies with 300 articles are showing a depth of 250. Wikies should not be condidered for depth calculation till it reaches 1000 artticles.--59.95.4.13 19:03, 13 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

1000 seems to be arbitrarily chosen. Why not 256 or 4096? RobiH 15:49, 27 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
I would hazard a guess that this choice may be somehow related to Homo sapiens' predilection for decimal numeral systems, based primarily on anatomical considerations rather than mathematics or logic, subjects which are known to tax the human brain. --222.106.128.215 16:52, 29 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Article counts in the press release about 10M pages

[edit]

"The largest Wikipedia is in English, with more than 2.2 million articles; followed by the German and French editions, each of which contain more than six hundred thousand articles. Nine other language editions contain 200,000+ articles, and more than 150 other languages contain 1,000+ articles."

Seems to me that, based on this article, the numbers in the press release are not true. I count 8 languages other than English, French and German with more than 200k articles, and 142 other languages with more than 1k articles.

Perhaps this article is out of date? --Nroose 17:49, 30 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

What is % of English only vs. non Eglish articles

[edit]

Is there a way to determine:

  • What percentage of the English (EN) of the 2,375,000+ have no other translations?
  • How many of articles in the non-English Wikipedias have no English (EN) version?
  • What percentage of all Wikipedia articles are written in English (EN) first, then translated to other languages?
  • And conversely, what percentage of all articles are written in non-English languages first, then translated to other languages?
  • Are stats like these kept? And if so, where? 75.136.245.72 20:34, 20 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

    Sranan Tongo

    [edit]

Why Sranan Tongo wikipedia srn: is counted with only 2 articles ? I read 294 pages ! Also the special statistics counts only 2 pages but... I see 294 articles on NS0

At a first glance, many articles are too short and don't even have a comma. One of the requisites for a page in the main namespace to be counted as an article is that it must include a comma. Best regards, Alpertron 12:40, 5 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
This would screw up languages that don't use commas, though (ex. Tibetan). -- Prince Kassad 13:57, 5 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Infact, that it's strange. So, 2 or 294, who is that deletes the 9 new wikipedias from the list ?
Ps: after control i've seen more than 2 pages with a coma, a map, a template. More than some of hundred stubs for ex. for municipalities also in en. . The special:statistics counter of srn could it be on a black out ?

    Stub ratio a farce?

    [edit]

Is it just me or is the stub ratio factor a bit of a farce. Because the definition of a stub can be arbitarily defined by the given wikipedia and some Wikipedias have substantially softer definitions. I can see one Wikipedia where only 9% of articles are greater than 2kb, yet 75% of articles are not stubs, for example. Blnguyen 09:13, 19 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Also, shouldn't the formula be the inverse stub ratio? Unless the depth increases for having a higher proportion of stubs. Blnguyen 09:20, 19 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

It is the Haitian one ( Krèyol ayisyen, ht: ), who had a very rapid growth. But i see also that depth is signed with a 0 and these 2 factors reminds me to the "lombard question" ( lmo: ). In december Lombard wikipedia reached quote 103,000 articles (with 0 depth) but in that same period it passed around a proposal for closing and losts almost all articles cause they were lots of stubs automatically created by some bots in english and catalan. Images - (question?)

    [edit]

I noticed that the stats of some languages have a very small number of images (Spanish lists 0 for example!). However, when actually browsing or looking at the wikipedia pages in the respective languages, there are lots of images on them! Why are the image statistics so skewed? Are some languages "borrowing" images from other wikipedias (English for example)?

Also, if someone downloads a copy of a "dump" file in a language for offline browsing, will the images be included? (for example, Spanish lists 0 images--will any images be downloaded, or in Swedish, will more than 26 images be downloaded?)

    Thanks!

The statistics show the number of images uploaded DIRECTLY onto proper Wikipedia, it means that there are not any images uploaded on Spanish edition. As you have noticed, there are plenty of images visible in the articles - it is possible thanks to Commons, which hosts a lot of images which could be used in all projects.
