New translation template - no link to translation help

In the new translation process the pages for translation do not yet have a link to the Translation FAQ. If the pages for translation are going to be the landing pages for new translators in particular, then they need to carry a prominent link to the help pages for new translators, whether that is the Translation FAQ page, or a new "Translation help" or "Fundraiser translation help" page. You are completely right! It is on my todo list for this week, and I'll get to it tomorrow. Since the new templates work in a different way than the ones we have used previously I think we'll have to make it a branched version of the current FAQ. That said, the templates are meant to be as self-explaining as possible and should already be explaining most questions related to translations, but a separate page is still needed. Language selection

Why does the set of selectable languages here and at https://sugar.corp.wikimedia.org/translators/translators.php omit certain languages although they have active wikis? --::Slomox:: >< 08:09, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi, and sorry for the late reply. The form only has a random selection of languages; it is simply about what languages were in the Sugar database before we started this, so there isn't really a concious choice of not having languages there, it's just a coincidence.

As for this page, it has the languages that had translation when we began + a few other languages we wanted translations for. It hasn't been updated to add all other languages that have gotten translations yet though, I'll be sure to do that ASAP. Jon Harald Søby (WMF) 14:33, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

Reference text when editing

It is very helpful to have the English text displayed while editing, but that blocks the textbox... please fix it by adding a hide/expand template. --Bencmq 06:31, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

I found the problem. This is caused by Gadgets - Interface - add an [edit] link for the lead section. So if you have a problem hiding that box, you can uncheck this option. --Bencmq 14:15, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

Internal links

There are many internal links, for example, Stories2/en and Ways to Give/en. We do not have the corresponding subpages in many languages, to leave them as /en, or replace with the corresponding langcode, or only link to the parent page? --Bencmq 06:48, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

What can I do

IFrom http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:Translate-status/Fundraising_2011/pt-br I click FAQ to start the translating of Fundraising 2011/FAQ/pt-br but when I saved the page the previous informations at right with the original source text disappear. Colloquial versions of translations to Spanish

Jimmy letter 001

Is the Jimmy letter 001 going to be used if Jimmy letter 002 is not translated? The reason I ask is that I'm a coordinator for 2 languages and fatigue is beginning to set in! We were told at the beginning of the process that a minimum goal to aim for would be translation of the core messages, one letter and the central notice (+ extensions). We had achieved this, for both languages. If the Jimmy letter 001 is not to be used, then we've suddenly not achieved the minimum goal. Lloffiwr 21:42, 18 October 2011 (UTC)

The pronunciation for Kaldari is straightforward: /kald'ari/ (but he says he doesn't really care how it's pronounced, hehe). I haven't asked Alan Sohn personally, but I think it is pronounced like the English word "zone" (American pronunciation), but with an "s"; so approximately /soun/. Just to let you know that we have a page on the Wikimedia UK wiki with the extra phrases that we will need to make use of translated banners in the UK. Thanks to Lloffiwr we have Welsh, which is the most important from my point of view, but translations into any other languages spoken in the UK would be welcome. Conflict between appeals

A discrepancy between the most recent original and the one shown in "Expand"

Jimmy's letter #2 changed the number of Wikimedia employees from 73 to 93 on November 3, but the Russian translation sub-page shows the text with the number 73 on clicking its "Expand" link.

It doesn't really matter; both numbers get replaced with a template on donatewiki (which is where they are published) that automatically shows the right number (which for the moment is 95). It is easier if it is left as 73 and 93, because we can then just replace that number with the template when the page is published. :-) (But thanks for the notice!) There is a shameful mistake in the Hungarian translation!

I'll translate back literally the Hungarian translation to show what I mean by.

"When I founded Wikipedia, I saw business potential in it, with full of advertisements. But I didn't decide this way at last."

I think this is far beyond what Wales meant to say, but prove me wrong.

What about using local currencies

I think presently the donation system support many currencies including INR. Can we use ₹250/₹100 in addition to $5, €10, ¥1000?

Hungarian translation!

Would someone, please, overwrite the current Hungarian translation? Its highly shaming for Jimmy Wales and for the entire Wikipedia project!

A Google-nek közel egymillió szervere van. A Yahoo körülbelül 13 ezer fős személyzettel rendelkezik. Nekünk jelenleg 679 szerverünk és 95 fős személyzetünk van.

A Wikipédia az 5. helyen áll az internetes világ-toplistán, és havonta 450 millió ember használja – több milliárd oldalletöltéssel.

A jó üzleti érzék rendben való, a hirdetésekben nincs semmi rossz. De ezek nem ide tartoznak. Nem a Wikipédiába.

A Wikipédia valami különlegesség. Olyan, mint egy nagy könyvtár vagy egy közpark. Olyan, mint az elme szentélye. Ez egy hely, ahol mindenki gondolkozhat, tanulhat, megoszthatja a tudását másokkal.

Amikor megalapítottam a Wikipédiát, létrehozhattam volna egy haszonközpontú vállalkozást, tele kereskedelmi hirdetésekkel, de másképp döntöttem. Évekig keményen dolgoztunk, hogy a Wikipediát megtartsuk soványnak és feszesnek. Teljesítjük küldetésünketa, a pazarlást átengedjük másoknak.

Ha mindenki, aki ezt elolvasta, 1500 Ft-ot adományoz, akkor évente csak egyszer kellene adományokat gyűjtenünk. Viszont nem mindenki tud, illetve akar adományozni. Ez rendben is van. Minden évben épp elegendő ember dönt úgy, hogy adakozzon.

Kérem gondolja meg, hogy erre az évre 1500.-; 6000.-; vagy 15.000.- Ft-ot adományozzon, vagy annyit, amennyiről le tud mondani, a Wikipédia támogatására és fenntartására.

"Read Now" button in banners

The Hebrew banners have English text on the "Read Now" Button instead of Hebrew.

1. I wonder, does this happen in other languages, too?
2. I assume that this string comes from TranslateWiki.com. Does it?
3. And most importantly, what can I do to fix this?

Minor suggestion

Instead of resources you should use the Dutch word 'bronnen'. It wil be more obvious to people who have a lesser knowledge of foreign languages. (please forgive me if I spelled something wrong in English, it is not my primary language).

A "vmi nem ördögi" kifejezés merőben mást jelent, mint a "vmi nem ördögtől való" és az attól a mai nyelvi trendeknek megfeleltethető "vmi nem az ördögtől való" változata, ami szintén árnyalatnyi különbséget hordoz magában. Az első legismertebb és elterjedtebb jelentése, hogy mesterkélten, gonoszszándékkal kimunkált. Ezzel szemben a "nem ördögtől való" némileg vallásos töltetű, a politikai újságírás a jobb és a baloldal csatározására ezt egész szívesen használja. Míg a legutolsó lényegében ugyanazt jelenti, az irónikus értelemben a midnennapokban is használható, de alapvetően vallásos töltetű kifejezéssel szemben ez attól elfüggetlenedve, már-már idiómatikusan fejezi ki, hogy valami nem eredendően rossz.

Emiatt javaslom, hogy ahhoz a részhez ne nyúljunk hozzá, az ott rendben van!

Finnish banner wording

The Finnish translation of "Please read" to "Ole hyvä ja lue" clearly changes the tone of the message from a polite request to a demand. The Finnish language doesn't have an equivalent to the word "please", and the wording that's currently used in the translated banner ends up sounding quite curt and awkward. It'd be better to remove the "Ole hyvä ja lue" part altogether, I think. --KFP 02:37, 19 November 2011 (UTC)

German FAQ has been published unchecked

The German FAQ has been published without removing or even noticing the translators’ comments which now probably contribute to the readers’ confusion. Someone should fix this and sort out the issues mentioned in the FAQ. The FAQ is incomplete (because especially the payment procedures section cannot be localized just by translation) and contains broken links. Apparently the whole organisation of this translation project lacks some kind of final inspection. -- Zwaailicht 22:19, 19 November 2011 (UTC)

Google debe de tener cerca de un millón de servidores. Yahoo, alrededor de 13 mil personas en su plantilla. Nosotros tenemos 679 servidores y 95 empleados. Wikipedia es el quinto sitio web mundial, y sirve a 450 millones de personas diferentes cada mes, con cerca de un billón de páginas vistas.

El comercio es bueno, la publicidad no es mala, pero aquí no tienen cabida. No en Wikipedia.

Wikipedia es algo especial. Es como una biblioteca o un parque público. Es como un templo para la mente, un lugar a donde todos pueden ir a pensar, a aprender, a compartir nuestro conocimiento con otros.

Cuando fundé Wikipedia pude haberla creado como una compañía lucrativa con anuncios publicitarios, pero decidí hacer algo diferente. Hemos trabajado duro en los últimos años para no malgastar. Y hemos cumplido con nuestra misión, dejando el derroche para otros.

Alemannic (gsw) translations lead to the English version

I don't know if this is the right place for this, but when I click on the personal appeals on als.wikipedia, I don't end up with the Alemannic version (language code: gsw), but with the English one, even though the gsw-translations have supposedly been published. I'm currently in Switzerland, so I end up at [1], [2] etc. I don't know what happens when someone in Germany, France, or Austria (the other countries Alemannic readers are from) clicks on it. Yes that is the Alemannic version. I think what happens is that when you're in Switzerland, you are sent to a page where you donate to the Wikimedia CH chapter, and the gsw-Version has not been published there, so it defaults to the English version. --Terfili 07:49, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

To make a suggestion to improve the tnaslation

Elevating in Spanish can not be traslated to "elevando". I think thats transaltion without and adjetive only means to put something up or increase the altitude. I supose after read the letter in English, that the meaning or intention to use that word is about improve the category or standing of people. Is it the case, I suggest to add after elevate the adjetive Category who translatión is : elevando la categoria. Al the final the all sentence will be: ",estás elevando la categoria de la gente de todo el mundo que tiene acceso a este tesoro."

Regarding the poor quality of the Turkish translation of Alan Sohn's letter text - Fundraising 2011/Translation

To whom it may concern,

I am a wikipedia user (and a recent donater). I would like to help wikipedia in any way I can and for this purpose, I would like to bring to your attention a problem I have just realized.

I am sorry to tell you that the Turkish translation of Alan Sohn's letter is not upto Wikipedia standards; it has amateurish mistakes in it and it looks as if it has been translated by using some sort of computer utility. To be perfectly honest, certain sections in it are so badly translated that I am afraid any serious user from Turkey would have difficulty in taking this seriously.

I work as a lecturer in a university in Istanbul (my field of expertise is medical ethics). Turkish is my native language; I have published papers both in English and in Turkish and I also have professional experience as a translator. Needless to say, I would gladly translate the page in question. Unfortunately, I have realized that the letter has already been published.

If there is any way to improve/update the Turkish text in question, please let me know.

You have put "je" in the end of the article of Alan Sohn, Dutch version, in "als je het mij vraagt." in the rest of the article you are writing "U". I am not sure if it is incorrect but it is a difference in formal and informal language. Furthermore it is well-written.
