This is a short summary overview of the Source pages on Meta from 4th of June to 12th of June of Cycle 2 discussion. Healthy, inclusive communities - A

  • On the Dutch Wikipedia (1s to 23s), participants commented in terms of username that we should abandon using pseudonyms. (§nl9) They also discussed that the idea of inclusion by the WMF will be counterproductive. (§nl21)
  • On the English Wikipedia discussion (99s to 105s) participants commented that if we follow this theme can create the utopia that the internet was originally intended to be.(§EN103)
  • On the French Wikipedia discussion (49s to 72s) participants commented that we should partner with institutions and associations working in the fields of diversity, equality (§FR56) and organizations proposing mediation training, organizations offering non-violent communication training. (§FR59) One user also commented that inclusion necessarily implies to improve the design of the site. (§FR55)
  • On the German Language Wikipedia (44s), one participant said that the more inclusive Wikipedia is the more balanced and neutral the Wikis will get. (§DE1)
  • On the Hindi community one on one discussions (1s to 15s), participants commented that this theme is important because it is a prerequisite to talk about other themes (§HI1) and we can’t grow if there is no unity in the community. (§HI5)
  • On the Hindi Community Whatsapp discussion (1s to 18s), participants said that if we follow this theme we would see, less conflicts of interest, better understanding and new editors with frequent contributions.   • On the Polish Wikipedia (24s to 32s), Though one user commented that this theme is important because level of newbie-biting is very high (§PL24) but another participant disagreed because healthy community is not our goal to achieve but rather one of the resources we can use for some strategic purpose.   • On the Turkish Wikipedia (1s to 4s), participants said that healthy and organized communities should be the main theme (§tr4) and it would also effect the other themes. (§tr2)

The augmented age - B

  • On the Dutch Wikipedia (1s to 23s), participants discussed that this theme is important and we need a new interface with focus on simplicity. (§nl11) They also commented that there should be a way to integrate a Simple Wikipedia into the normal Wikipedia. (§nl3) They also talked about the failed projects and urged that we should stop focusing on them. (§nl13)
  • On the Hindi community one on one discussions (1s to 15s), participants thought that this theme is important because better tools are necessary to ensure that contributing to the movement is easy and also to ensure editor retention (§HI9) and it will be very useful if we work with organizations like Google, Bing and Microsoft. (§HI12)
  • On the Hindi Wikipedia (1s to 33s), participants suggested to collaborate with mobile manufacturers and service providers. (§hi18)
  • On the Meta wiki (73s to 86s), participants suggested to collaborate with developers and academics in field of automated translation, data handling for improving Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons and other mobile apps. (§Meta79)
  • On the Polish Wikipedia (24s to 32s), participants commented that more automation is needed (§PL31) otherwise we will become boring walls of texts in the era of the multimedia world. (§PL30)

A truly global movement - C

  • Affiliations Committee (1s to 45s) members commented that if we follow this theme we can overcome language barriers (§AffCom23) and we would actually become able to get closer to our vision to provide free access to the sum of all human knowledge. (§AffCom26) Participants suggested that affiliates also provide infrastructure support to help scale our shared strategic work. (§AffCom29) They also discussed about shared experience, (§AffCom32) gaps, bias (§AffCom34), project & resource distribution (§AffCom37), focus more on regional conferences, (§AffCom39) expand partnerships outside movement, (§AffCom40) and we could partner with telecom, education institiutions, NGOs (§AffCom43) and those organizations working in linguistic diversity. (§AffCom45)
  • On the Bengali community discussion (7s to 10s) participants commented that we need to make sure that every human being with necessary device can access our contents, (§BN7) and we can reduce the knowledge discrimination by informing everyone about the importance and usability of Wikimedia projects. (§BN8)
  • On the Hebrew Wikipedia village pump (24s) one participant said that this is the least important thing, because Wikimedia can't fix the world yet, and it does not have the resources to connect half of the world to the Internet.(§HE24)
  • On the Hindi Wikipedia (1s to 33s), participants commented that following this theme will help in actual globalization of knowledge (§hi19) and global dissemination of crucial knowledge is necessary. (§hi20)
  • On the Italian Wikipedia (90s to 100s), participants discussed that we need to deal better with innovation in the platforms. (§IT91) They also suggested that we should import (translate) content from small Wikipedias to big Wikipedias to fight cultural colonialism. (§IT97)
  • On the Meta wiki (73s to 86s), participants commented that this is utterly the most important of all themes. (§Meta82) Participants also talked about harassment and availability of art images (§Meta84) and non-free content criteria. (§Meta85)
  • On the Russian Wikipedia (32s - 36s), One participant commented that the geographical distribution is wrong − the global movement is not about continents, it's about rare languages and endangered cultures (§RS32) though another user disagreed. (§RS34) They also suggested to partner with educators from national schools and indigenous communities. (§RS36)
  • On the Spanish Wikipedia (47s to 48s), one participant commented that to be more global and incorporate knowledge from all over the world, we have to be less local. (§ES48)
  • On the Turkish Wikipedia (1s to 4s), participants suggested that opening regional and/or country offices would make this theme stronger. (§tr3)
  • On the Vietnamese Wikipedia, (20s to 27s) participants commented that we can incorporate many cultures' wisdom and knowledge into Wikipedia by being open, humble and acquisitive, (§VI24) and globalization can help us to promote Wikipedia in the world naturally. (§VI25)
  • Members of Wikimedia Morocco user group (1s to 4s) commented that accessing to Wikipedia isn't the only thing, we should make sure the content is available in maximum languages. (§WMMO3) They also suggested collaborating with institutions and governments that make efforts to add access to the internet. (§WMMO4)

The most trusted source of knowledge - D

  • On the Dutch Wikipedia (1s to 23s), participants suggested that more original research should be allowed.(§nl17) We should also focus on more traditionally encylopedic subjects and reduce the amount of current policies that we have. (§nl19)
  • On the French Wikipedia discussion (49s to 72s) participants suggested that empowering Wikiversity can surely increase the visibility and seriousness of the movement as a whole. (§FR70)
  • On the Hindi Community Whatsapp discussion (1s to 18s), participants discussed that becoming a trusted source of knowledge might help in bringing more editors (§HIWA10) and focus on content will create a more engaging environment for our readers. (§HIWA8)
  • On the Hindi Wikipedia (1s to 33s), participants commented that if we follow this theme we will be able to ensure credibility, better consumer satisfaction, and Wikipedia will be used as a source of reliable citations. (§hi2) They also suggested to collaborate with scientists, authors and students.(§hi28)
  • On the Polish Wikipedia (24s to 32s), participants discussed that this theme is the most important one. (§PL28) They also suggested to teach Wikipedians to find trusted sources. (§PL32)
  • On the Vietnamese Wikipedia, (20s to 27s) participants commented that can work with universities to make student assignments of checking sources and correcting information in Wikipedia articles. (§VI26)

Engaging in the knowledge ecosystem - E

  • On the Arabic Community discussion (8s to 16s), one participant commented that we should try to enhance our efforts on reaching and engaging all individuals and underrepresented groups around the world in the knowledge ecosystem. (§Ar16)
  • On the Hindi Wikipedia (1s to 33s), participants discussed that this theme is really important and Wikipedia's survival might land in a crisis if we don't follow this theme. (§hi30)
  • On the Italian Wikipedia (90s to 100s), participants commented that as an encyclopedia Wikipedia is already a part of knowledge ecosystem so they said how we are a part of it, and that depends on the other themes. (§IT99)
