The PhilWiki Community - Bicol is the branch of Philippine Wikimedia Community, Inc., also known as Philippine Wikimedia Community User Group or PhilWiki Community (PH-WC), based in the Bicol Region. The branch traces its roots from the Bikol Wikipedia Community which was founded in 2009 and eventually recognized as the Bikol Community in 2012. It was recognized as a branch of PH-WC in 2022.

Background

The Bikol Wikipedia Community was founded in October 19, 2009 by Filipinayzd, Ringer, and Geopoet, and it was formally recognized as the Bikol Community in April 27, 2012 for the objective of leading Wikimedia activities in the Bicol Region. In June 1, 2015, the community founded the PhilWiki Community based in Naga City.

With the expansion of PhilWiki Community outside its birthplace Naga City, PH-WC members revisited a proposal in 2021 for local branches inside the user group. Among the feasible branches as of 2021 are the Manila Branch and the Bicol Branch. Thus on June 25, 2021, the board approved Resolution: Policy on Establishing a PhilWiki Community Branch to establish branches of the user group.

On December 02, 2022, as the PhilWiki Community - Manila was founded, the activation of the Bicol Branch is in full effect. The branch will spearhead and organize all activities of PH-WC in the Bicol Region.

General Objectives

1. To create, organize, develop, engage, initiate, support, promote, and participate in projects, programs and activities of the PhilWiki Community that promote free, responsibly open-content resources and reference materials in English and Philippine languages, and of the Wikimedia Foundation, Inc. focusing in the Bicol Region
2. To collaborate, cooperate, network, and associate with other branches of PhilWiki Community, Chapters and User Groups of Wikimedians as well as with institutions, organizations and individuals to promote the free culture movement.

Specific Objectives

1. To conduct edit-a-thons in universities and libraries that will encourage students, teachers and other individuals to the use of the local languages in writing Wikipedia articles on literature, local histories, culture and traditions, and the arts;
2. To contribute images, audios and videos to Wikimedia Commons about the Bicol Region through photo-scavenger hunts, edit-a-thons, cultural walks, cruises, expeditions and tours.
