Wikimedia projects contributors organize meetups to have a meet-and-greet with fellow content editors, socialize, and collaborate with them around the common goal of sharing free information. Anyone can organize a meetup that varies from a simple social meeting to a much lesser formal Wiknic, on a picnic with fellow Wikimedians. Most meetups happen spontaneously because no one needs permission to have a meetup and there is no requirement for anyone to have a meetup in a certain way. Due to the pandemic, some meetups are not in person but virtual as well. Some meetups are for discussing Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects, while others have the goal of convening people to edit. Many meetups have at least one experienced Wikipedia editor present, but lots of meetups have organized and accomplished their goals without an experienced editor attending.
Wikipedians from the Tagalog, Cebuano, Ilokano and Bikol communities first met at the 2012 Philippine WikiConference during the discussion on Building Regional Wikimedia Communities. Representatives from Philippine Wikimedia communities which included the Pangasinan, Pampanga, Tagalog and Bikol communities met again at the 2013 Philippine WikiConference in Pasig City, Metro Manila. A collaboration between the Tagalog and Bikol communities realized the Open Web Day at Ateneo de Naga University on 30 June 2012 and at University of Nueva Caceres on 24 November 2013 both held in Naga City. Rinconada Bikol Wikipedia Edit-a-thon was initiated by the Bikol community with technical assistance from the Tagalog community on 5 August 2014 in Naga City.
WMPH President visited the Pangasinan community at the Malong Building, Pangasinan Capitol in Lingayen, Pangasinan on 25 August 2014. Later he also paid a visit to the Bikol community at Central Bicol State University of Agriculture on 21-22 December 2014. On 1 June 2015, PhilWiki Community was formed by the Bikol community to serve as an organization of unaffiliated Wikipedians in the Philippines.
Engr. Ralff Nestor Nacor served as the Chair of Membership Committee (2021-2022). He is an administrator of Bikol Wikipedia. He is a Manila-based licensed Chemical Engineer and he is currently a pilot-scale brewer in a known Filipino beer company. His first meetup was in Naga and since then he has been active and also previously served as President of PhilWiki Community (2021-2022).
Philippine Wikimedia communities
[edit]There are eight (8) existing Philippine language-based Wikipedia projects namely Bikol Sentral, Cebuano, Chavacano Zamboangueño, Kapampangan, Ilokano, Pangasinan, Tagalog and Waray. Each of these languages has at least one million native speakers, except for Chavacano Zamboangueño which is threatened to be closed down for lack of editing activity. Among the existing proposed Wikipedia projects, Hiligaynon has over a million native speakers while Capiznon, Kinaray-a, Miraya Bikol and Rinconada Bikol have tens to hundreds of thousands native speakers. The Community strongly opposed the proposal to close down the Cebuano Wikipedia.
There have been contributors who actively promote Wikipedia projects in different parts of the country: Pangasinan Wikipedia in Lingayen, Pangasinan (Ilocos Region), Kapampangan Wikipedia in Angeles City (Central Luzon Region), Tagalog Wikipedia in Manila (National Capital Region), Bikol Sentral Wikipedia in Naga City and Rinconada Bikol Wikipedia in Iriga City (both in Bicol Region) and Waray Wikipedia in Tacloban City (Eastern Visayas Region), Bikol Wikipedia in Tacloban City}} ({{w|Contenadas.
