What problem does this solve?

When you administrate a portal or resource on wiki, you may have multiple pages that address different steps, features, etc. When all your content is on one page, translation is easy, because there are several translation units in the same URL, and one message at the top to translate the page. When you have multiple pages, how can you centralize translations?

What is the solution?

Aggregate Groups is a special feature in the Translation Extension that allows you to group a set of pages to translate, organizing all the content in one link for volunteer translators.

Things to consider

All pages have to be marked for translation before you start creating the group. This feature is not very intuitive, so when using this as part of your content translation strategy, make sure you follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to Aggregate Groups on Meta Wikimedia.
  2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on Add a new aggregate group.
  3. Enter a group name. The name should be as simple as possible, because the URL will be created automatically off this title. Avoid using /or :. You can also enter a description, although this is optional. Click Save.
  4. You will see a new section with the title you chose, and the option to add a new page under that group. Enter the page name there. If the page was not marked for translation in advance, you won't be able to add it to the new group. If you mark a page for translation in between adding pages to the group, you have to refresh the page where you are creating your group to be able to see the page and add it.

Once you finish creating your group of pages, you need to find the link. The easiest way to do this is is to:

  1. Navigate to Language statistics.
  2. Choose the original language code, and un-check both boxes in the search options.
  3. Do a browser search of the title you chose for your group of pages: press Ctrl + F or Command + F and enter the respective words.
