Hello, WMKO colleagues!

Thank you for this proposal. We have a few questions below.

Update on 2019 programs

Since you are still in the midst of your 2019 programs, it would be great to have an update since you posted the midpoint report.

• Have you been able to implement any changes for the wiki women editathons to encourage more participation?
• Have you managed to host the serial editathons for new and women users?
• What have the been the main outcomes from your partnership work over the last year?

Community support

• The proposal states that during last year's Wikiconference, participants agreed on the need for more innovation in order to attract more participants and suggested ideas. What were some of those ideas? Can these ideas be explored before the next WikiConference? Beyond innovation, are there other issues the community has identified that would be useful to address at a conference?
• How are you planning to understand if the objective of the conference are met? Will you be surveying participants before and/or after the conference?
• Were you able to support a Wikimania scholarship last year? If yes, did the recipient share their experience and inspire or organize a project as a result?
• The mentorship program sounds promising and we are excited to hear how it goes. How will you know if this program is successful?

Partnership

• Libraries: What have you learned from last year's work with libraries that will inform this program in 2020? What are the advantages and goals partnering with the university library? In other contexts we have seen that libraries and specifically librarians make very good partners. Training librarian cohorts who can then run their own programs in their libraries has also been a success. However, our understanding of this project is that the library is the space in which to host editing meetups with students. Is that correct? What would success look like for this partnership?
• NGOs: Beyond article creation, what is the goal of this partnership?

Support for sister projects

• Please provide more detail on the success of last year's camp so we can better understand the impact of supporting these projects.

Budget

• Last year, your budget overview included 20,644,000 in outside funding. Do you not expect to have any other funding beyond this grant in 2020 or did you just not include it in this year's budget?
• Please confirm how many staff are included in your budget request -- 1.5 FTE?

It would also be helpful to understand better what your offline volunteer community is like. Do you have a core group of volunteers who support projects in each of the three main areas? If yes, how many? If only in one or two programs, which ones? How are you thinking about or supporting the development of more leaders in your community?

Update on 2019 programs

Since you are still in the midst of your 2019 programs, it would be great to have an update since you posted the midpoint report.

• Have you been able to implement any changes for the wiki women editathons to encourage more participation?

We orginally planed consecutive editathons for women users. The first editathon was not successful, so we changed an approach, we hold single edtathons of which subjects could attract women users attention.

• Have you managed to host the serial editathons for new and women users?

We supported volunteer offline meetups for new users, and we estimated it was successful.

• What have the been the main outcomes from your partnership work over the last year?

Partnership with Yangjeong Girl’s High School was extended, and student from the school delivered presentation about their experience.

Community support

• The proposal states that during last year's Wikiconference, participants agreed on the need for more innovation in order to attract more participants and suggested ideas. What were some of those ideas? Can these ideas be explored before the next WikiConference?

Beyond innovation, are there other issues the community has identified that would be useful to address at a conference?

Participants thought the weaken community must be rebuilt, and conflicts among user also must be reduced. A user suggested revision of Korean Wikipedia's front page to provide useful information for new comers. A regular meetup were also suggested, and the first meetup was held on November 9th. The suggest ideas will be discussed and evaluated on the meetups constantly. At this moment, the innovation was thought to be the most important and emergency issues, but we discussed about how to help volunteer meetups and students. We will focus on those issues.

• How are you planning to understand if the objective of the conference are met? Will you be surveying participants before and/or after the conference?

As I mentioned above, we will hold regular meetups, where we will evaluate the projects suggested at a conference.

• Were you able to support a Wikimania scholarship last year? If yes, did the recipient share their experience and inspire or organize a project as a result?

Yes, we were. The recipient submitted his report on Korean Wikipedia, and gave a video presentation at last conference.

• The mentorship program sounds promising and we are excited to hear how it goes. How will you know if this program is successful?

We will survey new users who the mentors will help.

Partnership

In other contexts we have seen that libraries and specifically librarians make very good partners. However, our understanding of this project is that the library is the space in which to host editing meetups with students. Is that correct? What would success look like for this partnership?

We learned public librarians are conservative, and they don’t have a lot of interest in hosting Wikimedia events. We met a university librarian who are passionate for the project, and he helped us to host an event in the library. We will attempt to make a good partnership with public libraries, but we will change an approach to it. We will provide education program for librarians who intend to host Wikimedia events.

• NGOs: Beyond article creation, what is the goal of this partnership?

We will promote Open Access and free knowledge movement to them, because The movement is emerging in Korea, but it is still misunderstood.

Support for sister projects

• Please provide more detail on the success of last year's camp so we can better understand the impact of supporting these projects.

total 5 skilled users participated in the event. 391 photos were uploaded and 78 articles edited for two days.

Budget

• Last year, your budget overview included 20,644,000 in outside funding. Do you not expect to have any other funding beyond this grant in 2020 or did you just not include it in this year's budget?

We expect other funding next year, but we just excluded in this application.

• Please confirm how many staff are included in your budget request -- 1.5 FTE?

We will employ two staff members, all of them will be full timers. Part of the whole salaries will be paid with our own funds.

Book club being run by two skilled users and total 19 users are involved the group. Other online or offline edition was or will hosted by 3 or 4 skilled users this year. The front page is been revising by 3 users. We already have our own offline meetup support program, and we will extend the program. Simple APG Committee recommendation

We recommend that Wikimedia Korea receive a grant of 46,900,000 KWR for a year. We believe your program plans look reasonable, focusing on innovating in your approach to recruit new participants and maintain programs that have been successful over the last year. These include offline meetups for new users, education partnerships, and the annual wikiconference.

We understand there is an increasing challenge from a competing website and this year you will need to develop strategies and implement projects that make contributing to Wikimedia easier, friendlier, and distinct from its competitors. We see this as a stabilizing and strategizing year and hope we can support you through this period.

Wikimedia Korea’s grant is approved in the amount of 46,900,000 KWR for 12 months

Congratulations! This grant is approved in the amount of 46,900,000 for 12 months. We appreciate the work that you are doing through your three program areas of community support, partnerships, and support for sister projects.

Regarding community support, we see a good balance between engaging the existing Wikimedia community through the WikiConference, scholarship opportunities, and awards for dedicated users, as well as welcoming newcomers with a specific focus on women participants. We understand you are trying different strategies for editathons and meetups to see what type has the most engagement and retention. We appreciate you being flexible with your models in trying to meet different needs and interests.

We understand creating a welcoming environment for new participants is a key focus area, especially considering the challenges of having a competing website in Korea. This can be done in a number of different ways that you are exploring -- offline meetups, better Wikipedia home page, improved policies, mentorship program, and more. We will be very interested to see how each of these impact your ability to recruit and retain new participants.

Partnerships is another area where you seem to be trying new models as you learn from last year’s experience. We agree that focusing on training university and public librarians is a good approach.

We hear your concern about the future of the Wikimedia projects and editor numbers in Korea. We would like to establish a better channel for regular communication so that we can improve our understanding of your context and support longer-term thinking. We currently do not have a lot of staff capacity to work closely with all our grantees, but we are considering alternative ways we can offer this support.

We hope 2020 will be a year of innovation. We look forward to working together.

Request for a deadline extension for the final report

We need a deadline extension for our final report, because we hosted an online birthday party for Wikipedia 20 that we didn’t plan in the beginning of last year. Moreover, we need more time to settle our accounts for last year. Motoko (WMKR) (talk) 06:36, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
