Introduction

We were established in 2014, and approved as a user group in 2015. Finally, we were approved as a Wikimedia chapter in 2019. We are the only movement affiliate which is operated in South Korea. South Korea is not a multilingual society, so we are focusing on supporting Korean Wikimedia community.

We attempt to develop programs to provide users with friendly ambience and praise dedicated users. We've supported financially volunteer offline meetups before we applied for WMF's grants. We saw some meetups attract new comers and train them. Meanwhile, Korean Wikimedia community is facing a lot of challenges, because Korean Wikimedia project have to compete with both professional encyclopedias and commercial wiki sites.

Programs

Community support

Recently, Korean Wikimedia community has a difficulty attracting new comers, because online environment changed a lot. People spend time using their own smart phone, they pursue easy-to-read contents, and young potential users edit another wiki site. Participants suggested to rebuild the weakened community, and we will strengthen our community support program. In our annual conference, we will discuss and evaluate innovation we need. Despite this hard situation, we saw volunteer offline meetups attract new comers and train them. We will support these meetups financially.

WikiConference

We hold annually a national conferecce for both experienced users and newcomers in Seoul. In the Last conference, participants agreed Korean Wikipedia needs innovation for new environment around the project, and they suggested some ideas for it. This year, we will evaluate the suggestions and attempts for the innovation, and collect users' innovative ideas.

Objectives

• sharing ideas for innovation of Wikimedia projects

• sharing and discussing users' experience related to the project.

Wikimanina Scholarship

We have granted a travel scholarship to one Korean Wikimedia user to share global issue with Korean Wikimedia community.

Objectives:

• We will choose one grantee from Korean Wikimedia Community and request he/she to submit a report to share global issues regarding Wikimedia.
• We expect the report to inspire users to launch at least 1 new projects. To know it, we will require the grantee to report if he/she launch a new project and keep track of new Wikiprojects.

Awards for Dedicated Users

We have awarded users selected by Korean wikimedia community to praise their dedication. This year, we will give an award to a non-wikimedian or group who contributes to developing wikimedia projects. We will held a winning ceremony with an unconference.

Objectives:

• We will award cash prizes to 4 users from 4 categories. We expect the prize to encourage active users. To measure long-term impact of this program, we will interview the recipients and keep track of their activities for one year.
• We will give certifications to non-wikimedians or groups who contributes to developing wikimedia projects to praise and encourage them.

Regular meetups for innovation

In last conference, Korean Wikimedia users suggested that innovation for Korean wikimedia projects is necessary for the projects' surviving and regular offline meetups are essential to find solutions quickly.

Objectives:

• To discuss about the innovation and evaluate it, we will hold over 4 offline meetups regularly.
• We expect at least 5-10 users to participate in each meetup, and at least 2 project to be launched.

Supporting Offline meetups

Last year, we saw success of voluntary offline meetups hosted Wikimedia users. We evaluated they were very helpful for new users. Especially, a volunteer project called Book Club succeeded in attracting and training new users. This year, we will expand this support.

• To support volunteer offline meetups financially and train new comers individually, we will reimburse costs to rent a place or buy snacks. We will invite an author or a teacher if an editing group requests. We expect over 4 regular meetups hosted by Book Club, and over 4 single meetups hosted by other organizers.
• We expect at least 5 users to participate in each event, and at least 3 articles to be improved or created.

Support for mentors for new comers

As we can see in New Editor Experience report, newcomers need a personal mentor rather than a written manual, but Korean wikipedia's mentor system is not very active, because of the small size of the community. We will support dedicated mentors by praising and awarding them.

• To train new comers, we will organize a group of mentors for new comers and monitor their activities. We will give a small gift and certification to one or two dedicated mentors selected by peer assessment or users' recommendation every six months.

Partnership

We are in a tough situation in term of partnership. Wikipedia is not a dominant encyclopedia, and a strong competitor emerged, so we have a difficulty in persuade outer organization to join in Wikimedia movement. In spite of that, we found some vigorous partners in a library and a school. We will maintain partnership with them, and create a good case to promote the cooperative projects.

Libraries

Partnership with libraries was successful partially, we need to find more proper target. We think university libraries have more interest in educating or using Wikimedia projects.

• To draw potential users and encourage consecutive editing, we will establish a Wikimedia-editing group in Dongguk University Library. We anticipate 5-10 students joining in the group.
• One-two old Korean books will be typed in Wikisource.

Non-government Organizations

We found an organization for common knowledge. We will inform them how to share their researches in Wikipedia.

• To improve professional articles, we will cooperate with a common knowledge group.
• We expect 5-10 articles to be created or improved.

Schools

We maintain good partnership with Yangjeong Girls High School, and the teacher expanded the number of students who learned Wikipedia editing. We will continue to support them this year, and support for students who host their own offline editathons. Moreover, we will give certifications to diligent students recommended by their teachers. Moreover, we will promote Yang Jeong's case to other schools with the teacher's prsetation video.

• To draw and train potential users, we will support teachers and student who use Wikipedia as an educational tools. We will support for them both financially and non-financially.
• We will expect over 100 girls to learn to edit Wikipedia articles and over 60 articles to be created or improved.
• We will promote the project to other schools and we will develop new partnership with one-two schools.

Support for sister projects

We have developed programs to support Korean Wikimedia sister projects, because the projects are not much less active than Korean Wikipedia. We evaluate last year's camp program was successful, so we will host the program to collect resources and take pictures. We will encourage the book club to edit Wikiquote articles as well as Wikipedia articles.

WikiTambang

WikiTambang^* is a program for skilled users to collect resources in a less represented area or region. We started it last year, we evaluated it was successful in terms of quantity of the collected contents. Participants will collect resources and take pictures in a selected area, and edit articles for two days with other participants.

• To improve articles about less represented regions, we will host 2 camp events.
• We will collect over 200 pictures and improve 20 Wikipedia articles.

Photo Contest

We saw submitted picture decreased significantly in last's years photo contest. We think that was because we reduced the total amount of cash prizes. We don't plan to increase the amount of the cash, but we will find a sponsor to provide winners with souvenirs.

• To collect pictures of Korea natural heritages, we will host a local Wiki Loves Earth competition.
• We expect over 500 to be submitted during the contest.
• To promote the event, we will make pictorial calendars or books with winning photos.

Wikiquote & clubs

As mentioned before, we are running a book club which discuss about a book and edit articles related to it simultaneously. We think the club can also Wikiquote articles, and other kind of clubs such as movie club can edit Wikiquate articles in their offline meetups.

• To improve Wikiquote articles, we will encourage a book club or film club hosted by Wikimedians to edit articles in the project and support their offline editing meetup financially.
• We expect 5 articles to be improved or created.

WikiConference

Not yet. We will hold it in October. If the corona virus outbreak will continue until October, we should consider to host it online.

Wikimanina Scholarship

This year's Wikimania was postponed, so our scholarship program was also canceled.

Awards for Dedicated Users

Not yet. We will begin the vote in November.

Regular meetups for innovation

• To discuss about the innovation and evaluate it, we will hold over 4 offline meetups regularly.

Partially achieved. We hosted an offline meetup in January. All of our offline meetups has been paused , we held two alternative online meetups.

• We expect at least 5-10 users to participate in each meetup, and at least 2 project to be launched.

Achieved. We launched 2 online projects on Korean Wikipedia: Students Camp Project and Wikipedia Maintenance Project.

Supporting Offline meetups

We stopped supporting offline meetups financially, because of the COVID-19 outbreak. Instead of that, we are supporting volunteer online editathons.

Support for mentors for new comers

Not yet. We planned to organize offline regular mentor meetups, but it is impossible now. We have to change our initial plan.

Partnership

Libraries

Not yet. Following shutdowns of public libraries, we cannot build new partnership with them. Instead of that, Dongguk University Library is planning their own Wikipedia education program.

Non-government Organizations

We delayed all partnership building activities. Instead, we are planning to recruit students or volunteers who have professional knowledge through a government-run online platform. We can provide the volunteers with volunteer hours approved officially by the government on the platform.

Schools

Not yet. All offline classes were switched to online ones, so teacher cannot assign ordinary homework or host an offline Wikipedia education class.

Wikiquote & clubs

• To improve Wikiquote articles, we will encourage a book club or film club hosted by Wikimedians to edit articles in the project and support their offline editing meetup financially.

Partially achieved. Although our book club was halted, we hosted Wikiquote Editathon online in May.

• We expect 5 articles to be improved or created.

126 articles were improved, and total 12 users participated in the event.

Community support

In March of last year, we had to cancel all of our offline activities because of Covid-19 pandemic. Instead of them, we supported online edit-a-thons, and live-streamed events. We broadcast our conference for the first time, where professional presentations about Abstract Wikipedia and fact-checking were delivered. It was a valuable experience for our further live-stream events. As an alternative of offline events, we supported volunteer online edit-a-thons, and 5 events were hosted on Korean Wikipedia.

Originally, we planned four consecutive offline meetups for innovations on Korean Wikipedia, but we couldn't help but stop all of our offline activities. We evaluated and talked about our activities for the innovation in online events such as the conference and online meetups. As a result of the activity, we launched two new projects: Student Camp and Maintenace Project. The former aims to support and help underage users, and the latter was established to activate categorization of articles and removal of wrong deletion requests.

Because public libraries and schools were shut down, we couldn't perform our two planned sub-projects during the last year. We built partnership with Korea Broadcasting Journalist Association, and helped them to organize Factcheck-a-thon online competition. Thought the event, 5 groups composed of 14 participants uploaded 5 news articles on Korean Wikinews.

Support for sister projects

Throughout last year, we hosted and supported online edit-a-thons for sister projects, because we couldn't hold offline events. The online events were much more successful than we expected, so we will continue to support them. Especially, we attempted to activate Korean Wikinews project by supporting two events last year. We think long-term edit-a-thons need to be hosted for the project this year. Moreover, we was surprised by the success of Wikidata Online Edit-a-thon, and we will plan more activities to encourage users to edit Wikidata items this year. For more success of Wikiquote Online Edit-a-thon, it was suggested that we simplify rules of the edit-a-thon.
