Add topicCancellation of offline events due to Coronavirus
[edit]Hi Alex, hope you are doing fine in this period of stress. Some people are wondering why grantees only received the covid-19 email camcelling all off line events for grantees. There are numerous events happening under the banner “les sans pagEs” which are not directly funded this year by WMF but by local chapters and other institutions. We are also a user group. So maybe the WMF should communicate to all wikimedians holding events? Not just “grantees”? Put up a central notice on all projects? Kind regards, 06:13, 13 March 2020 (UTC)

Process
[edit]Hello Alex !
I added two documents to Grants talk:PEG/Africa Centre/Wiki Loves Africa 2014 and was wondering what else was actually expected from us and what was the timeline of the decision making process on your side. Sorry... our own timeline is short so I am curious to know where the situation stands and if we can launch the project or not ;) Thanks for your feedback Anthere (talk) 18:29, 19 August 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Anthere. We will review the documents and get back to you with any final comments/questions tomorrow. Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 18:31, 19 August 2014 (UTC)
Work pressure!
[edit]Alex—I'm picking up somehow that you're being pulled in about five directions at once, and that the revamp is adding to the pressure. So ... just in case you thought no one had noticed that you're overperforming, they do. :-)
Thanks for your updates in the draft application form. There was no report on the discussion at Wikimania, or chance for others to discuss the matter of strategic priorities. The laundary list was a problem, yes; but I think we're creating something with unnecessary distortions and bad messages. In short, hardly anyone will choose to "focus" on quality: they'll go for the easy ones like reach and participation. One of my fears is that any move to emphasise quality outputs (such as I put to the PEG evaluation video conference) might be stymied. I don't want to face a response by an applicant to the effect that "We chose to focus on increased participation, not quality". Rather, I'd like quality to be increasingly built into the design of projects; it can't always be, but often it can. The learning patterns are a new resource here.
I'd like to start a separate thread on that talkpage, and to refer GAC members and staff to it for a discussion on this part of the application form and that very first rubric bullet. Tony (talk) 01:41, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks, Tony : ). I'd welcome a discussion regarding how to message the strategic priorities differently if you'd like to start a discussion on that page. However, I don't agree that hardly anyone will chose to focus on quality since many projects we fund inherently are quality-focused projects, such as online writing competitions, GLAM, themed edit-a-thons, and education programs. Please note that I am on vacation August 28-September 7 and Asaf will be in Brazil for the community consultation so we won't be available to respond until the week of September 8th. We can pick up this conversation and your ideas around the PEG criteria then. Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 22:40, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
PS The only thing that you might consider adding to the application form is a stand-alone (or a clause in the invisible instructions) concerning quality assurance; is that the term you use for gaining feedback on programmatic quality? Whether it's a questionnaire or an oral survey of participants, summarised in the report, I'd like to see it built into more of the plans. Tony (talk) 01:45, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
- This is definitely an idea to consider. I will discuss with the Learning and Evaluation team on the best way to do this. Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 22:40, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
Probox
[edit]Hi Alex, you wrote to me: "the language has been updated in the new grant submission form. You need to look at "edit source" under the probox for the detailed instructions." – I'm not sure what the probox is (the infobox top-right?) ... or where the edit source button is. Tony (talk) 10:11, 11 September 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Tony. Sorry if that was confusing. What I mean is that on the template page, click "edit source". The third "paragraph" contains the infobox information (after "{{probox"). The text within the <---> are the hidden instructions. If you have any comments, please do not make any changes on the template itself. Please leave a comment here or on the template discussion page. Thanks, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 22:01, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
- Thx; ah, I saw the "please don't edit" afterwards. They're too fiddly and trivial to have talked through on the talkpage. Tony (talk) Except for non-trivial choose 1 strategic goal –> 1–2 ... I thought that's what appears elsewhere now. Tony (talk) 01:37, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

Your reversion
[edit]I will initially communicate about this with you by email. Tony (talk) 00:19, 2 October 2014 (UTC)
- Alex, your recent edit to the criteria: I wonder whether finishing on "lapse" would be less confrontational. After all, a lapse is a lapse, and means you are removed from membership.
- I updated the wording a bit. I think "lapse" is a somewhat confusing word, even for a native English speaker so I used "expire" instead. Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 16:12, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
- I'm going to add more to the Grants:Learning_patterns/Achievable_goals learning pattern; it would be good to get your feedback on it, so I'll let you know when. Tony (talk) 04:39, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
- Great, thanks! Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 16:12, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
Miscellany
[edit]Alex, this instructive post tempts me to compile a resource of useful WMF comments in context—but I won't just yet.
In that same post you encourage the applicants to aim higher, in one respect. I wonder whether you're entirely happy with the message coming across here, particularly in "Set realistic targets" and "Promise less, deliver more". I had a slight feeling on first reading this that it could give some Wikimedians the wrong idea. I suppose I could tweak it to avoid implying over-cautious predictions/planning ... Tony (talk) 10:47, 16 October 2014 (UTC) Later: Ah, Jonathan wrote it, I think. Maybe it's ok. Tony (talk) 10:50, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Tony. Yes, that could be confusing and contradictory to what I've been advocating for in our grant requests. It's not that I want people to inflate their metrics, but to be realistic and a bit ambitious. For example, with WMMX, they are planning to host at least one event per month and only get 5 new users? That seems really low since the metric is not "active users" but "new" users. The learning pattern is about setting realistic goals, which I don't think the WMMX metrics are (or were, because they've been updated). The last sentence of the learning pattern does say, "If the goals and targets you set in your project plan are too conservative, the people you ask to review and comment on your plan should be able to tell you so (this is especially true if you're asking them to support the project with money or time)". I will talk with Jonathan and see if we can re-word the learning pattern a bit. But you should also feel free to edit it as well. Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 18:50, 21 October 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks, Alex. Tony (talk) 04:52, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

Strong objection to the blanket funding of the CEE conference
[edit]Alex, first, I just wasted 20 minutes of my time because there was no indication on the talkpage that you've decided to fund this holiday event in full.
Second, funding such a poorly organised event, and one for which funding was applied for just 10 days before they want to start spending the money, sends very bad signals to the system.
Grantmaking should not be funding vague, disorganised, last-minute proposals. I'll be looking for real impact when the documentation comes through, both from the conference itself and from the report. Tony (talk) 06:02, 2 December 2014 (UTC)
Another holiday with no impact
[edit]Alex, as you'll see from my long post at the Wiki Arabia application, I'm not at all happy that we're continuing to repeat the same wasteful conference model: insufficient early community interaction; insufficient formulation of questions, options, strategies beforehand; no details on who will attend (bring anyone from each country, doesn't matter what their skills, background, commitment); no specific impact on WMF Arabic sites. What a waste of money. Can you assist them and/or hose this down to something less ambitious and less costly? Tony (talk) 13:33, 18 December 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Tony . Thanks for your useful comments on the proposal. I've had a couple calls with the group emphasizing the points you raised and pushing them to do more of the preparatory work needed to create an effective conference. I will continue to push on this. I've also just received the list of the most active editors per country on the Arabic Wikipedia. This is private information, so I will be reaching out to these individuals directly and encouraging them to add their ideas/concerns to the program page. The organizing team has gathered feedback from the active editors through a survey (although they only received 14 responses) and are actively reaching out to more. Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 18:05, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
- Alex, thanks—sounds good. I think I might use the next week or two, which everything's quiet, to write a learning pattern on how to plan effective conferences. It would link in part to Sue Gardner's recent blog about how to manage invited speakers; but more than that—I have in mind a model for three successive waves of personal interactions, before, during, and after a conference, each with its own role.
On a tangential matter, the responses to "fit to strategy" are going down a nowhere route of prefabricated generalised claims that mean nothing, really. "Increase participation and reach"; "pilot activities spurring growth in readership and editing"; "Encourage the health and growth of Wikimedia communities and the projects they sustain"; "Facilitate community efforts to create organizational models and structures that support the Wikimedia projects"; and " fuel the growth of communities and projects around the world"; "Local communities will be empowered"; "Sense of leadership will be raised". All vague ... I could have jotted them down in ten minutes, they're that unanchored in the details, the specifics of their situation. Maybe I'll try to give some good and bad examples in the learning pattern ... but it's not easy.
I want to know which parts of the territory they're covering have what kind of connectivity and what rate of mobile device usage—that, to me, is the start of planning programs.
So it would be good if you could look over my draft and provide advice on improving it. Tony (talk) 15:28, 21 December 2014 (UTC)

Adjustments
[edit]Hi Alex—I see two PEG talkpages in which you've added a section for "support with adjustments". I can find no adjustments. Could such secions start with a diff of how the PEG application has been adjusted? Tony (talk) 04:28, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Tony. I am adding that section as a permanent part of the GAC assessment at the top of each discussion page. This is because a lot of time GAC members put their name under "support" section but have a number of concerns with the proposal. The current structure does not accurately reflect their level of comfort supporting the request as-written. The ones already under review probably won't utilize this, but in future I've asked GAC members to add their names to this section during the review process and as the request is updated/improved to move their names to "support" or "don't support". Hope that's clear. Cheers, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 16:35, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
- Alex, I can see why you've done that; but the notion of signing to an "update" is necessarily time-sensitive, especially if (as I'd encourage, and I'm sure staff and GAC would encourage), the application process involves continual improvement of an application and the ideas that underpin to increasingly reflect the WMF's priorities. So GAC member X approves the update on 25 January, but there are more changes on 27 January. Does the GAC member support those changes as well? I suppose their signing comes with a date-stamp, but interpreting this when there's a raft of date-stamps would be quite a job. I can't help feeling that a more effective way of doing it would be for you to set a date for GAC "update approval", perhaps upon or after your own comments are posted on the talkpage. That could well function as a time-motivator for both applicants and GAC members (in a process that is a bit flabby time-wise), and I suggest would explicitly not preclude any further updates.
While on this matter, I'd be more comfortable if applicants were explicitly encouraged to express their updates on the application page itself, rather than scattered through the talkpage: when it comes to reviewing reports, it becomes difficult to assess exactly what the applicant's "contract" with the WMF was (and by proxy with the donors). Tony (talk) 06:46, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

In the meantime, you may wish to selectively read through this page and its links, such as this one. One piece of advice is to think of what you want to achieve in terms of the WMF's and PEG's priorities (not all, but at least some), and work back to the activities that would achieve them. Relocation of founds
[edit]Hello Alex. When I subbited my grant report for WLM 2014 (Grants:PEG/WM ES/Wiki Loves Monuments Spain 2014/Report) we asked for used the remaining founds for Grants:PEG/WM ES/GLAM National Museum of Sculpture of Spain, but as you know personal issued of the applicant doesn't allow her to start the proyect yet. Then, I think that I could be better to ask for use them in Grants:PEG/WM ES/Wiki Loves Monuments Spain 2015 in case it would be accepted. I know that in case we finally applied for a APG we must finish all our PEG before 2016, but we are considering to ask for a PEG for 2016 after our meeting with Katy in Mexico City.
The second issue is regarding the items of WLM 2014 and the Monuments of Spain Challenge. I don't know if we could send the prizes in two stages. One now for people who provided all their data and a second stage for people who will provide their telephone number in the following weeks. --Millars (talk) 09:32, 14 August 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Millars. Thanks for the update. It's fine to move the remaining funds over to the WLM 2015 proposal. If that proposal is ready for review, please change the status to "open" and let us know. Yes, we can send the prizes for the people that we have all the information for. Can you please re-send me the file that provides all the shipping information and exact prizes so I can work on it next week? Thanks, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 19:01, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

Letter request
[edit]Hello Alex,
Jan Strugnell and I are applying for a Community Engagement award to recognise the importance of collaborations between Wikipedia and other communities.
As part of the application we need signed letters of support on official-looking headed PDFs. We would love it if we could a half-page something from the WMF why these sorts of collabs are important to the WMF. Would you be happy to put something together? The deadline is a little tight (5 Sept 2016).
From the application instructions: "Signed letters of support written by participating organisations on official letterhead stationery should address outcomes and beneficial features of the collaboration and be attached to the electronic submission."
Let me know what you reckon!

New Proposal-confusion about the timings
[edit]Sir/Madam, I want to submit a proposal for a grant. The details are there in the following link.
[https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Literary_Content_Development- _Multiple_Languages_(LCD-ML)#Community_notification%7Cیہاں]
On the grants meta page I found following information. Tues, Oct 11, 0200 - 0300 UTC on Google Hangouts and IRC Join us if you're working on a proposal for the Project Grants open call, or are interested in getting started! We'll also be on IRC if you want to ask questions there. IRC channel = #wikimedia-office
Would you please tell on oct 11 0200 - 0300 UTC means what? Can I presume the available time on the Chat channels or The time Wikpedia follows. Please clarify.--Drcenjary (talk) 05:20, 11 October 2016 (UTC)
Thank you
- Hi Drcenjary. Great to hear you are preparing a Project Grant proposal. The Google Hangout was today, October 11th from 0200-0300 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time or Greenwich Mean Time). We typically publish call times in UTC because people are participating from all over the world. To find out what the corresponding time is in your location, you can use this website. The Google Hangouts are opportunities during the open call period where applicants can ask questions and get feedback on their proposal. It looks like your proposal has the correct status and is ready for community review. The next step in the process is to invite community members to comment on the proposal on the discussion page. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Best, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 20:10, 11 October 2016 (UTC)
Grant submission
[edit]Hi Alex, I have finally submitted the grants I wanted to submit. I have an appointment with the equal opportunity office of the University of geneva to review their possible implication in the project next year (they were involved in the Wikiconvention conference on non sexist language) but I cannot at this date confirm officially without receiving the green light. Brigitte Mantilleri and I have been so busy we could not meet before today to finalize. Things have been going so quickly since Esino Lario, and we are jumping from a small local project (that we are continuing) into a transversal francophone one. So I hope this presentation will do, and anyway I will be providing the answers if you ask. Kind regards, --Nattes à chat (talk) 21:16, 11 October 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Nattes à chat. Thanks for letting us know the project has been submitted! It is complete enough to start community review and you can add details to it as needed. It would be great to set up a call sometime soon to talk about how the project has developed. I will email you. Cheers, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 23:46, 11 October 2016 (UTC)
Question on project proposal
[edit]Hello, How to change the project from Draft status to Proposed status? Or if admins do that then please switch our project into proposed status here. I initially assumed that these drafts were automatically converting into Proposed status on 11th but could not contact you in the last hangout on 11th at 12am hangout because nobody of three main hangout people were entering into the hangout chat zone. Thank you. Orgio89 (talk) 04:15, 12 October 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Orgio89. I'm sorry you couldn't reach us on the hangout. I was there the entire hour, but maybe there were some technical difficulties. Your project was submitted by the deadline so not to worry! Cheers, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 15:18, 12 October 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you for reply. Orgio89 (talk) 23:19, 12 October 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you for your updates, before 31st we will restructure our proposal. However reaching too few schools will not make research and development impact to both local community and with the Ministry so we will plan the operation with 10 local schools covering different communities to realistically identify and engage the children's educational development involved with Wikipedia. Thank you. Orgio89 (talk) 00:31, 30 October 2016 (UTC)

Gender Diversity Mapping project
[edit]I am interested in participating in some capacity with this project. I am especially interested in identifying, quantifying and describing the gaps in medical articles about women's health topics. In addition, as far as I can tell, the majority of top medical editors are men. The medical articles identified as being a priority for translation do not include many of the top priority articles identified by WikiProject Women's Health. The WikiProject Women's Health is 'under' WikiProject Medicine and have come to question this, also. I look forward to hearing from you.

Program Officer Rapid Grants Application
[edit]Hello!
Very excited to see an opportunity to work with your team on the Rapid Grants program. The listing indicates that this role receives supervision from "A Senior Program Officer on the Community Resources team." Because I see that you facilitate a lot of the [discussions] about this program, I am wondering whether it would be most appropriate to address my application to you or to all three Senior Program Officers in the Community Resources team.
Many thanks!
- Hi RLR1689. Thanks for your interest in the position! The Rapid Grants Program Officer will report to me. Best, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 02:47, 14 August 2017 (UTC)

Calendar of events and interractive map
[edit]Hi Alex, thank for the talk at the wikimedia conference. Here is the interractive map and calendar that we use on les sans pages: https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Projet:Les_sans_pagEs/Calendrier
We will probably move to something like this provided by Wikimedia France if mapping is made available:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimédia_France/Actions This tool has been developped by User:0x010C but is lacking the coding for the moment to use it as an interractive map. I have talked with User:Harej (WMF) of Toolhub and also User:Pyb. User:Rosiestep and User:Camelia.bobanalso seemed interested in having a map listing all gender gap events. However, I was thinking this could be used by all wikimedians, as the tool allows anybody to filter by location, tag or type of event.
Thanks for all the work you do. I have made a short report of the conference here in French https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Projet:Les_sans_pagEs/Actualit%C3%A9s#Wikiconf%C3%A9rence_%C3%A0_Berlin_du_18_au_22_avril and will also do the same on the Wikiwomen user group, but I need to work through my notes first. --Nattes à chat (talk) 16:32, 23 April 2018 (UTC)

[edit]are requested to revoke the membership of Hasive from Grants:PEG/Grant Advisory Committee in light of his undisclosed-paid-editing activities, in direct contravention of TOU, as evidenced over this thread at bn.wiki. The findings led to him being de-syssoped and indefinitely blocked over there and a subsequent resolution by Wikimedia, Bangladesh to terminate his membership.
Also, see this thread at en.wiki which further highlights his UPE-editing at en.wiki with an extremely-promotional slant.Subsequently, he was also indefinitely blocked.

Bug detected on the banner of Gender Equity Report 2018.
[edit]Hi Alex,
I am just reading and translating the report. In the mean time, I want to submit some bugs I found in the layout of the repot on meta --
Translation of Navigation & Intro
[edit]- There is no translate banner for the Intro page and the navigation template, is it on purpose? I think both pages should be translatable.
That's it for now. Thank you for your effort of making this interesting work! --Liang(WMTW) (talk) 09:30, 12 October 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Liang(WMTW). Thanks for fixing the intro page. We've added translation for the navigation template. Thank you!! Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 21:51, 17 October 2018 (UTC)
- @AWang (WMF): Thank you for the follow up. I have translated the page into Chinese, however, there are two emerging issues:
- The text "Conversations with movement leaders" above the navigation buttons is not translatable. Is it possible to translate that?
- The outcome of the translated navigation is not in the designated language but English buttons with translate mark ups, like this page. Is it possible to find someone to fix the mark up issue?
- --Liang(WMTW) (talk) 09:49, 18 October 2018 (UTC)
- @AWang (WMF): Thank you for the follow up. I have translated the page into Chinese, however, there are two emerging issues:
Text issue
[edit]Hi Alex, I find two more errors -
- In this section "The section of this report about intersectional knowledge, above" is still using the sandbox link, but that inter link is not compatible to translated pages. So the internal link should be changed into the report en link.
- The end section of Best Practice, which is Communication practices, is not translatable. Maybe the translate mark up have not set properly?
Hope those reports help. --Liang(WMTW) (talk) 14:49, 13 October 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Liang. Thanks! These two issues should be fixed. Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 20:50, 17 October 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Alex, yes conirmed. Thank you so much! --Liang(WMTW) (talk) 09:49, 18 October 2018 (UTC)
Intro fixed & PDF format adoption
[edit]- Hi Alex, another update. I have fixed the issue I report by redirect the Intro page to the root page. And thanks to the cowork with User:五月雨恋歌, the whole Chinese translation for this report is complete. I am trying to ask for more people to review and also work on a smoother translation that can fit the wording habit of Traditional Chinese user in this google doc. I plan to put the whole report in a pdf format and spread the report in the pride parade in 27 October in Taipei. --Liang(WMTW) (talk) 02:02, 15 October 2018 (UTC)
- Hi User:五月雨恋歌 and Liang. Amazing! Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 20:53, 17 October 2018 (UTC)
Graphic vs Text Inconsistency
[edit]Hi Alex, I have found one extra point that confuse me a bit in the translation process. In the Communication Practice section under the Best Practice section, the number of Off-wiki is 80% in the infographic and the Both On-wiki & Off-wiki is 17%, but the numbers in the text are different -- they are 78% and 19% in the text. Which is more accurate? Also @Mjohnson (WMF): to reach out for clarification. Thank you in advance. --Liang(WMTW) (talk) 05:37, 15 October 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Liang. Fixed! The infographic is correct. Thanks! Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 20:53, 17 October 2018 (UTC)
Question regarding Defining Gender text
[edit]Another question, what does "Something around article deletion -- challenging notability??" in the Defining Gender section stands for? Also, I found that the Patriarchy glossary in the same page is not translatable due the the translate mark up have not been set properly by translate administrators. --Liang(WMTW) (talk) 16:34, 15 October 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Liang(WMTW). That was a mistake and we deleted it. Fixed the translation to incluede the patriarchy definition. Thanks! Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 20:59, 17 October 2018 (UTC)
Translatable graphic request
[edit]Hi Alex, I am also translating the infographic, I wonder can you make the following graphic translatable, so I can replace the original English infographic, like what I've already done for this graphic in the translated version:
- Number_of_interviewees for Intro section
- Projects_addressing_the_gender_gap_by_language for Intro section
- Primary_communication_channels for Best practices section
- Diversity_in_leadership_roles for Barriers to equity section
- Issues_with_existing_policies for Barriers to equity section
Thank you.--Liang(WMTW) (talk) 09:49, 18 October 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Liang(WMTW). It looks like already translated them all! You are a translation wizard. Please let me know if you need anything else and THANK YOU! Cheers, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 18:15, 19 October 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Alex Wang (WMF). True, the translation of the graphic is already done. However, those graphics is not able to put on the Chinese edition report since it requires the translation administrator to work on the page so I can use the translation extension to allow me alter the graphic link of the page. I may need your help as a translation administrator to assist the completion of update the materials to translate in the following three pages - here, here, and here. Thank you :) --Liang(WMTW) (talk) 02:06, 21 October 2018 (UTC)

Grant report table column widths
[edit]Hi Kacie and Alex. I noticed that the Template:Project/Rapid/Report/Table/Header1 prevents visualeditor from being used when writing grant reports and forces the outcomes column to be quire narrow. Since reports are generated via preloading a page anyway, could this be replaces with a normal table? T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 00:39, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
