Grants talk:PEG/Shared Knowledge/Annual plan 2014-15/Report
Add topicHi Bjankuloski06. Thank you for this report and apologies for the delayed comments. The team did review the report when assessing your Simple Annual Plan Grant proposal, but unfortunately have not written detailed feedback. Thank you for your patience. Congratulations on a very active year for Shared Knowledge! The group has obviously been busy and trying lots of different activities to support editors and content growth. We have a few questions/comments and look forward to your responses on the below.
- Wiki Loves Earth: Congrats on receiving so many more photos than expected -- 10,282 is quite a lot and many of them are really stunning! It's interesting that only 40 distinct photos have been used in articles, less than 1%. Why do you think this is the case? Do you plan on doing more activities around photo integration this year?
- Wikicrafts is definitely a culturally important project, but there were only three participants. Is this because the initiative for the project came from the organizing team and not from the volunteers? When considering taking on new projects, we encourage you to focus on those that have the best intersection of both relevance and excitement from people that want to edit about the subject. We hope more people get interested in wikicrafts and you can continue this work.
- Wikipedian-in-Residence at DARM: During the proposal phase of this grant and after submitting your interim report, we had a number of discussions about the role of the WiR. Our understanding was that the WiR would focus on scanning relevant chapters from various books related to the editing needs of community members and specific activities of the group. The WiR would also organize lectures and workshops to engage the staff of the National Archives, train editors, and engage experienced editors by providing source material. Our understanding from this report is that the WiR scanned 83 documents and 23 articles were written or improved -- almost all by the WiR her/himself or Bojan. Please let us know if this is correct.
- Wikiexpeditions: 51% usage of photos in articles is really impressive! Do you know why this is so high? Also, how did the group chose the locations and identify what areas would be most beneficial in terms of content? The quality of photos varies quite a bit, with the Wikiexpedition to Mijačija having really nice photos. Perhaps a photography training at the start of the year or a quick review at the beginning of each trip would be useful.
- The editing competition was very successful in terms of content generation -- 16 participants and over 500 articles created! Knowing that you have such active editors who participate in online competitions is definitely useful for future activity planning.
- It looks like you used the interim report format for the expenses section. Can you please fill out the sections with "placeholder text" that I added to the bottom of the report? This will clarify how much was budget vs. spent and what the underspend was. My understanding from this report is that there was an underspend of $7,286.72 EUR.
Thank you again for all your work in 2015 and this detailed report. Cheers, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 02:38, 16 April 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks for your comments and questions Alex Wang (WMF). Please find my answers in turn.
- Wiki Loves Earth 2015: The contest ended similarly to our previous photographic contests in terms of the number of images uploaded but, as you point out, the level of usage of the uploaded images was very low even several months after its end. This is mainly because: 1) the uploaded images were taken from places that largely overlap with those from the previous year and 2) the community did not run an initiative to increase the usage of images in articles. Changes were made prior to Wiki Loves Monuments 2015 so that prizes for the five best contributors were removed from contest in order to focus on quality rather than quantity. However, albeit having a substantially lower number of uploaded images, this did not help in diversifying the objects that the images were taken from. Finally, because of all these issues necessitating structural changes in the organising the photographic contests and the fact that the similar effect can be achieved through our other activities (e.g. Wikiexpeditions), we decided not to include Wiki Loves Earth and Wiki Loves Monuments in our annual plan for 2016.
- Wikicrafts: The main goal of the project was to "document a selection of the traditional crafts and trades of Macedonia that are on the way to being lost and forgotten or are culturally valuable as part of the national identity". We did not intend to include as many people as possible because of the expertise required to arrange the contacts and make the recordings of the traditional crafts.
- Wikipedian-in-Residence at DARM: The total number of scanned documents was 138 and the total number of created or improved articles was about 30. There are multiple reasons that prevented these figures to be higher: 1) the WiR was active during the summer period when most of the staff members take days off, 2) the materials available at DARM generally contain literature on topics that are well covered and 3) the Wi-Fi connection at DARM was reportedly slow. Yet, after completing the first three months of his residency, the WiR decided not to receive monetary compensation any more and continued as volunteer. The lessons learned from this experience were later taken into account with our WiR at MANU, who has been working hard on providing regular support to the community.
- Wikiexpeditions: The total usage of images in articles from the Wikiexpeditions in 2015 was 70,12% as of 13 March 2016. The main reason for the high rate of use is that we focus exclusively on quality and do not take duplicate images from the same objects if not necessary. All images were taken by a professional photographer who volunteers in our organisation except for those taken during the first two Wikiexpeditions. We have also allowed other users who participated in the Wikiexpeditions to upload their photographs but warning them that duplicating images should be omitted.
- We are going to fill out the sections with "placeholder text". Best regards.--Kiril Simeonovski (talk) 22:58, 17 April 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Kiril Simeonovski. Thank you for responding to our questions. Your responses helped a lot to clarify the issues. This portion of the report is approved. We still will need a report on the additional activities that were approved in the request for extension to close out this grant. Cheers, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 18:42, 18 April 2016 (UTC)
Report for use of remaining funds for 2015
[edit]This is a report on the request for use of remaining funds for 2015. Due to the nature of some projects, the activities for this re-use grant were officially extended into February 2016.
Description of projects
[edit]Archaeoexpedition
The project aims to visit different archaeological sites with professionals, photographing them, writing more and new information in existing articles or writing whole new articles about these locations. This expedition was to covered locations in Čaška Municipality, that took place on 11 October 2015. Three localities were covered: Hereon, a Roman underground tomb, Kale (Stari Grad), Bronze age and Roman era fortification, and Vrčvi - early Christian tombs.
Wikiexpeditions
Two Wikiexpeditions were held: one to the Rankovce region on 7 November 2015 and one to the Gradsko region on 8 December 2015. The expeditions documented villages, geographical areas/regions, churches, monasteries, buildings, schools and etc. throughout the territory of Macedonia and created and improved articles on them.
Editing competition
Olympic Games (Олимписки игри) editing competition was held on 1-30 November 2015, covering countries and sports at the Olympics, individual games, sportspeople etc. We are quite satisfied with the results of this competition and the number of articles created. Awards were given to the best three participants.
Edit-a-thon (no funds requested)
Not held due to absence of key people that were meant to participate.
European Science Photo Competition 2015
The European Science Photo Competition 2015 was a pan-European science photo competition organized to bring more science to Wikipedia. An international competition makes it possible to reach out to the wider scientific community and make them aware of the possibility to share their findings and passion with wider audiences using visual communication and free environment of Wikimedia. In Macedonia, as well as in other countries, it took place during November and December 2015. We had significantly more images than we expected, some of which were quite unique. These included anything from science students taking pictures in labs, to nature loves submitting images from their forays. We awarded the four best participants.
Physics experiments
This is a project aimed at recording high-quality videos of systematically selected physics experiments for the purposes of illustrating important scientific concepts and phenomena in various sciences. We made 25 high-quality (HD) images with additional sound and light equipment, where Prof. Zajkov at the Institute of Physics demonstrates various laws and phenomena in physics.
Wiki Loves Performing Arts (Drama Theatre)
This was a first part of a larger project group named Wiki Loves Performing Arts, designed to systematically illustrate the theatre actors of Macedonia (many of them TV and film actors too) by taking high-quality images in their theatres and improving their articles. We managed to photograph 17 actors in a uniform manner and improved the content of their articles or created new ones, where they didn't exist before.
Wikimedian-in-Residence (MANU)
The library fund of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts includes more than 160,000 units of which 56,310 books and 110,000 volumes of journals from different fields of sciences and arts. Having this in mind, the work of Wikimedian-at-residence is of great importance for making valuable contributions to Wikipedia with accurate, reliable and scientifically sound referenced information and data on various topics. Hence, the work of the Wikimedian-in-Residence at MANU is primarily focused on providing files and materials for creating, editing and improving articles with files uploaded on different scope of scientific topics and themes such as geography, physics, archaeology, ethnology, history, economy, agriculture, medicine, linguistics, biology, chemistry, arts etc.
Our Wikimedian-in Residence at MANU, Mario Šarevski (user Македонец) started working on 1 October 2015 and continues to do so in 2016 with significant success.
Lessons learned
[edit]Archaeoexpedition
Wikiexpeditions
Wikiexpeditions went smoothly, and except for weather conditions (especially in Gradsko, where we had problems with a fog), we don`t have any problems. These two expeditions were conducted one day per expedition, unlike others in 2015, because these municipalities were small and we had a chance to visit most of the villages in one day. We had a fewer number of photographs per expedition because of our decision to conduct these expeditions only one day per expeditions, but quality is among the best in whole year, and also now we had a photographs with coordinates, that is very important for us.
Editing competition
The competition went smoothly and we covered a great deal of countries. We had a good number of participants, but this can improve by posting about it on the global sitenotice (but still shown only to readers from the locale).
Edit-a-thon (no funds requested)
None, since it wasn't held due to absence of key people.
European Science Photo Competition 2015
The project lasted throughout November and December, prolonged from the original dates in order to gather more participation. We are quite satisfied as the organiser informed us that the average user from Macedonia added 15.9 images (three times more than in most of the countries). We could not meet the image use criteria, since we got many more images than expected when setting the goal.
Physics experiments
The experiments have become popular and we even featured due to their systematic nature and good quality. One consideration is the proper systematic description of what is going on in each video (rather than merely what phenomenon it illustrates), which needs to be done.
Wiki Loves Performing Arts (Drama Theatre)
We are satisfied with the quality of the images. However, but manager had some difficulty getting actors together to a photo shoot, and this was postponed due to other unforeseen activities they had. We managed to make photos of about 60% of the actors in that thatre, which is still, we think, satisfactory.
Wikimedian-in-Residence (MANU)
Since we've first had a WiR, we concluded that he or she needs to focus on researching and uploading valuable material (and using it in articles), rather than writing content related to it.
Project metrics
[edit]Project metrics
Project metrics | Target outcome | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
Archaeoexpedition
|
|
Many more articles were created because of the interest in what we found on the expedition.
Wikiexpeditions
|
|
These expeditions are conducted in one day per expeditions, because of weather conditions (cold weather and foggy days) and small size of municipalities. Because of these reasons we had a fewer number of photographs, but with better quality and with data about locations. Also, we continue with great percentage of usage of the photographs, over 70%.
Editing competition
|
|
There was a great response and effectiveness for this competition due to the interest in how various countries fare at the Olympics.
Edit-a-thon
|
not held | Edit-a-thon not held due to significant contributors being unavailable.
European Science Photo Competition 2015
|
|
Number of uploaded images exceeded our expectations, therefore target couldn't possibly be met.
Physics experiments
|
|
The measure of 50 articles was somewhat high due to the fact that it isn't easy to write descriptions of the experiment in the thumbnails on various language editions on Wikipedia, and requires more time and coordination with local editors.
Wiki Loves Performing Arts (Drama Theatre)
|
|
Out of the total number of people we managed to photograph, some have no available biography anywhere, and therefore their photos could not be used in articles.

Wikimedian-in-Residence (MANU)
|
|
The event organised was a presentation of the Wikimedia Movement and the role of the Academy in it to the assembled members. |

Reallocation report comments
[edit]Hi Bjankuloski06. Thank you for this detailed report on the reallocation activities. It's really helpful to have links to all your well-organized project/event pages so we can see the photos and articles! It was especially fun to watch the videos made as part of the physics experiments project. The results from the editing competition are very impressive -- the olympics are a popular subject! Your plans for the unspent funds are approved. Please be sure to include them in your Simple Annual Plan report. Cheers, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 20:44, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Bjankuloski06, it is so exciting to see the physics videos - I have told many people about that project since you and Инокентиј described the project to me at Wikimania last year. It would be really helpful if someone could translate the titles and descriptions of the videos so that more people are able to find and use them. Thanks! --KHarold (WMF) (talk) 21:11, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Bjankuloski06. This is to clarify that Shared Knowledge will use unspent funds for another round of physics experiment videos. Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 03:00, 4 June 2016 (UTC)
