This is a final report od 2014-15 (Part 2) for the activities and expenditures of Shared Knowledge (Споделено знаење) covering the period from the beginning of March 2015 to the end of September 2015, as requested per agreement in our Annual plan of 2014-15.
General public activities and engagements
[edit]Attendance of Wikimania 2015
[edit]This year, three representatives of Shared Knowledge attended Wikimania 2015 in Mexico City. Two of them (Bojan Jankuloski and Kiril Simeonovski) participated with a WMF scholarship, while the third attendee (Tsvetko Nedelkovski) had been granted scholarship by Shared Knowledge. Here are the reports of Kiril Simeonovski and Bojan Jankuloski. Tsvetko submitted a separate internal report to Shared Knowledge.
CEE WikiCamp 2015
[edit]Although the CEE WikiCamp 2015 wasn't part of this budget, we still decided to list it as an activity of the organisation, as it has taken time and effort during the same year. Here you can see the Report on the camp.

Wikimedian-in-Residence
[edit]The Wikimedian-in-Residence at the National Archives of the Republic of Macedonia (DARM) was appointed in June 2015 to improve the presence of archival heritage of Macedonia on Wikipedia and its sister projects. This is achieved by scanning and processing the material, uploading it on Wikimedia Commons, describing, collecting and sorting it, and ultimately, using it in existing articles or creating new articles inspired by the material in question.

[edit]Wiki Loves Earth 2015
- Main page: Wiki Loves Earth 2015 in Macedonia
- Appointing Bojan Jankuloski as the organizer (coordinator) responsible for the project, as per discussion in Annual grant request.
- Meetings of the organising team. During April, the coordiantor, Bojan Jankuloski (as assigned by WMF) arranged with the more-or-less standard set of people who contribute towards the organisation of the event. Zoran Mečkarski was given the task of modifying the video tutorial to suit the needs, Daniel Kraljevski did the web hosting, web design and maintenance, and Dana Uževska was responsible for the PR side of things in the media and social networks. Daniel and Dana received compensation for their work, as outlined in the grant request.
- Selection of jury members. We used the same jury as for the other phonographic competitions so far. They were: Ognen Teofilovski (professional photographer), Dimitar Tanevski (tourist guide), Zoran Ivanovski (amateur photographer) and Igor Kuzmanovski (amateur photographer). They also signed contracts for their participation as members of the jury and were compensated for the service, as before.
- Adjustments to the video tutorial. As mentioned above, Zoran had made adjustments to the pre-existing video tutorial that explains what the competition is about, how to participate and upload images.
- Updating the official website. The domain for the official website named "www.wle.mk" was registered on July 2014, and this time, it was updated with new particulars about this year's competition. The web hosting services along with the web design was given to Daniel Kraljevski (mentioned above).
- Promotional activities. The project's promotional period started about mid-April, completing the design of the official website and providing all necessary information about it. The existing fan page with the name "Вики ја сака Земјата" (trans. Wiki Loves Earth) was maintained on Facebook, and updated with information concerning the project, while the project was also promoted through the page "Википедија на македонски јазик" (trans. Macedonian Wikipedia) which numbers around about 40,000 followers. Besides Facebook, articles announcing the competition were posted on some of the country's most popular media and Internet portals.
- Operating period of Wiki Loves Earth 2014. The competition officially started on 1 May 2015 and lasted until 31 May 2015. The main activities during its operating period were monitoring the process of uploading photographs, fixing the problems reported by some of the participants or other people who have observed them and responding on the questions regarding the project.
- Categorisation and sorting The days after the end of the competition were spent in categorisation and sorting of the photographs uploaded by the participants. Categorisation of all uncategorised photographs was necessary to conclude the final number of photographs that had to be later reviewed by the jury, while their sorting helped rate the most prolific contributors in the competition.
- Review of the photographs by the jury. The process of reviewing the photographs uploaded during the competition was made on 18 June 2015, which is somewhat later than planned, due to the fact that two of the jury-members were not in the country in the preceding period. The time necessary to sort the photographs by their uploaders and rate the most prolific contributors took about a day.
- Review of photographs by the organiser Bojan reviewed the number of photos uploaded, and made a selection of valid and invalid ones, in accordance with the rules, so that he could arrive at the final number and award the 5 biggest contributors (the second class of awards).
- Award ceremony. The Award ceremony for the competition was held on 7 July 2014 in the Decata od Našata Ulica Café Bookstore in Skopje. It was attended by about 40-60 people including the organisers, prize winners, Wikimedians and participants.

WikiCrafts
- Although this project should perhaps be under the GLAM heading, it was done quite seprately. Bojan Jankuloski was the organizer (coordinator) responsible for arranging matters.
- Planning. Discussed and agreed the nature of the project, planned the content and activity roles. It was decided that it's best to have both video footage and photographs. The video aims to illustrate as much as possible the processes involved in these crafts, also featuring audio comments by the craftsmen themselves. They showed the tools, explained them, told us how they received the craft, some history about it and its present state. There are also explanations about the names of various tools and the process involved.
- Research and contact

- Researched available crafts that need to be documented, either due to their rarity or their importance in national culture.
- Making contacts with various craftsmen, making visits, and explaining the project.
- Once the right craftsmen have been found and willing, a plan was made for shooting and recording their cradts.
- Recording and editing

- Recording sessions were done at different times for different craftsmen, according to their availability and the availability of our volunteers. The whole project, as may be recalled, had been postponed as we were waiting for the weather to improve (we've had a long bad spell).
- The recorded material was then edited and documented, and the result uploaded on Commons.

Skopje Zoo

Project planning and negotiations with the zoo had been going on for long, but the project could not be agreed upon for various reasons until June, including various absences of the decision-makers at the zoo and the long time they needed to establish the nature of our organisation and whether collaboration should begin.
The project later developed a subsidiary activity involving the University of South-East Europe in Tetovo, explained below. Here is the process:
- Praparatory meetings. Meetings with Vesna Mateska, appointed as project coordinator, to discuss various aspects of the project. Project plan was submitted on 18 April;
- Research. Researching the names and number of species at the zoo and creating a Project page listing articles that need to be covered;
- Solution. It was decided that the plaques and the codes themselves should be in three language versions: Macedonian, Albanian and general QRpedia (marked with "Your language" below the code). Macedonian and Albanian are both official languages of the City of Skopje, but they need separate codes, since a large proportion of Macedonian and Albanian population use an English interface on their phones, meaning that codes will not be shown in native language if only QRpedia is used.
- Editors co-opted to write or improve articles on animals in the zoo;
- Consultations for spin-off activities. Consultations and negotiations with the academic authorities at the South-East European University of Tetovo. This is necessary, as the Albanian Wikipedia has very few articles about the animals featured at Skopje Zoo, and it was decided to begin an editing project with English language students to translate articles. This will be included in their coursework - articles will be reviewed and marks will be given by heir professor as part of it. This is to begin in September, with the start of the new term;
- Change of project coordinator. Vesna was replaced by her sister, Fani Mateska (Board member), due to unforeseen need for going abroad.
- Creating codes. QR and QRpedia codes for each animal created and double-checked for consistency. It was decided to use a mixed approach in codes, and three codes were used for each animal;
- Agreement. Negotiations with the zoo result in an agreement with its Director;
- Organising manufacture of plaques. Several meetings and discussions held with the company that made the plaques; designs and materials discussed; content and layout discussed;
- Plaques were created and printed (around 85 in number);
- Several trips to the zoo to determine the place and manner of mounting the plaques on various fences, enclosures etc. The zoo requested that the plaques we should have plywood bases for stability and protection;
- Plywood bases made and tailored; plaques were mounted on them;
- Plaques all mounted and ready for the public;
- Promotional materials. Designing leaflets, brochures and other promo material for the public;
- Printing of promo materials;
- Official promotion for the media to be organised by the zoo itself in collaboration with the project organisers from Shared Knowledge;

Wikimedian-in-Residence at DARM
- The Wikimedian-in-Residence at the National Archives of the Republic of Macedonia (DARM).
His duties include scanning and processing the material, uploading it on Wikimedia Commons, describing, collecting and sorting it, and ultimately, using it in existing articles or creating new articles inspired by the material in question. General workflow is as follows:
- Deciding on material needed and working on research with archive staff.
- Looking at material provided, and deciding what to use.
- Uploading, making documentaton, description, metadata
- Adding files in articles or creating new articles with additional material provided by staff and other sources.

Edit-a-thons & Editing competitions
- Toni Ristovski remained an organiser (coordinator) of the edit-a-thons and editing competitions.
- Held meetings to decide on the scope of the edit-a-thons, the nature of the topics, organizational particulars such as place, tim and refreshments, ways of advertising the events etc.
- As written in the annual plan, promotional material (stickers and badges) have been acquired that are to be given at the events.
- Created lists of articles needed to be covered on the edit-a-thons, out of which the participants picked the ones they wish to write.
- A project page has been made, where participants write their names and the articles they have written during the edit-a-thon.
- Edit-a-thons and editing competitions held so far
- So far, there have been three edit-a-thons, advertised on wiki and one of them, in a TV show dedicated to Wikipedia. These were:

- Светско првенство во ракомет за мажи 2015 (2015 World Men's Handball Championship)
- Астероиди (Asteroids)
Educational programme
- Cvetko Nedelkovski is project coordinator for Education.
- Agrement. An agreement was signed with Josip Broz - Tito Grammar School in Skopje.
- Lectures. Cvetko Nedelkovski and Bojan Jankuloski have lectured on Wikipedia/Wikimedia, free knowledge, the nature of participation and the technical know-how to actual editing.
- Article creation. Articles given below were created during the school year, in February to April period. The rest of the term (until term end on 10 June), there were large-scale student protests around the city, and the students were not attending classes. Because of that, the project had been in suspension. The situation has now normalised, and activities are planned to continue.
- Ceremony. Award ceremony for participating students and teachers in the main school hall. Certificates to be given to all participants, while top contributors also got prizes.
The three educational institutions involved so far are:
- Faculty of Economics at the Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje;
- Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje.
- Josip Broz - Tito Grammar School in Skopje;
Wikiexpeditions
- Appointing Toni Ristovski as the organizer (coordinator) responsible for the project, as per decision of the Board Members.
- Organising matters. Meeting of the team members in the Wikiexpeditions. One general meeting between team members originally interested in the Wikiexpeditions occurs before the start of the Wikiexpeditions. Main topics on this meeting were the regions/places where we plan to visit, transportation issues, gathering information about the regions before the start of the Wikiexpeditions, finding local persons who knows the region, time frames for all Wikiexpeditions.
- Operating period of the Wikiexpeditions. The first part of the first Wikiexpeditions was on 4 April 2015 and the last one of the Wikiexpeditions was from 3 to 5 July 2015. In the first two Wikiexpeditions we have a little problems with finding places where to sleep and organising the whole group, but eventually we solved this problems and thus we separate the first two Wikiexpeditions in Negotino and Kratovo on two part each of the expeditions. So, thus, we have one day expedition in the towns of Negotino and Kratovo, and one day expedition in its surrounding areas; total we had four days in this two regions. The third Wikiexpedition was a little experiment for us and I had to say, for whole movement, because we organise our first Wikiexpedition with our bicycles around the one of most sparsely regions in Macedonia and on this way we have a pleasure to see untouched nature, forgotten villages, beautiful landscapes and a lot more. This expedition was held from 29 to 31 May in the village Manastir, where we sleep in our tent (bought for this particular expedition). Also, this expedition was part of the outdoor festival Mariovo Off-Road Experience, with which we made a cooperation. Our fourth and last expedition was in the region of Mavrovo where we stayed in Kalin Hotel in the village Lazaropole in period from 3 to 5 July.
- Transportation. On two occasions, first part of the first expedition in Negotino and our third expedition we travelled with train and this was a good option, because on this way we had a chance to take a pictures from every train station to our final destinations, Negotino and Prilep, respectively. On our third expedition, also, we travelled across the region of Mariovo with our bicycles and on this expedition we didn`t use any motor vehicle. On all other expeditions we used a car to visit the planned regions.
- Additional information. We make two additional expeditions, one for making pictures of railway stations along the routes of second and third Wikiexpeditions and one astroexpedition in prehistoric megalithic observatory Kokino (4th oldest in the world according to NASA) during the Perseid Meteor Showers and we have a cool pictures from Milky Way.

Lessons learned

- What worked well?
- Most of the activities relating the competition went well without any serious problems. Also, we are very happy that Macedonia ended very high place among other, much more populous countries, with 10,282 uploaded pictures.
- What didn't work?
Everything went as planned, except for the fact that part of the jury was out of the country in the period following the end of the competition, and so the decision-making and ceremony had to be done somewhat later than expected.
- What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?
- Wider outreach and promotion of aspects of the competition that did not go well. One would be the explanation of the importance of proper desciptions and taking care to do as much as possible to find out more about what is actually photographed. We have since had access to popular media (TV, radio) and we will use them in future to promote the competition.
WikiCrafts
- What lessons were learned that may help others succeed in similar projects, or that may change the way you are doing this project?

- What went well, or is going well?
- We are very fortunate to have Dzvonko Petrovski as our photographer and videographer, who is a professional in his field. His material is done in a manner which raises the standard for such projects and we are pleased that traditions can be presented in this way. Our visits were generally greeted with positive responses and the craftsmen were keen to see their crafts being promoted on such a large scale. They were all aware of Wikipedia and its importance for world knowledge.
- What did not go well, or is not going well?
- There was a time constraint in the availability of the craftsmen, so we had succeeded in documenting two of the intended four crafts. The editing of the footage is time-consuming, but that is something that cannot be solved easily. The biggest technical challenge was the size of the finished video material that needed uploading on Wikimedia Commons, which exceeded the limit for ordinary users, and required special privileges or to be done by admins.
- From your answers above, do you plan to change anything you are doing as your project continues?
- To announce the recording day earlier than we did, as these people are quite busy. Otherwise, it results in rather small time slots or inability to fulfill the requested.
Skopje Zoo
- What lessons were learned that may help others succeed in similar projects, or that may change the way you are doing this project?

- What went well, or is going well?
We are very satisfied with the quality of the content created and the quality of the plaques themselves.
- What did not go well, or is not going well?
The negotiations wit the zoo took unexpectedly long time, and plaques needed modification to suit the needs that were intended by them, but not properly communicated.
- From your answers above, do you plan to change anything you are doing as your project continues?
We would prefer wider engagement of the editing community in creating the necessary articles.
Wikimedian-in-Residence at DARM
- What lessons were learned that may help others succeed in similar projects, or that may change the way you are doing this project?

- What went well, or is going well?
The level of cooperation between Shared Knowledge and the National Archives is very high. The Director is very enthusiastic and helpful, and the staff takes active interest in Wikipedia and helping the movement.
- Emilija Jordanovska, Junior Research assistant at the Archives has already been actively included as a Wikipedian. She has also become a permanent assistant to our Wikimedian-in-residence in his duties.
- What did not go well, or is not going well?
Slow Internet connection in the archive sometimes makes work arduous and less effective. The other possible problem occurs when assistants needed for particular areas go on leaves or holidays, and have to be temporarily replaced by someone else, although we consider that unavoidable.
- From your answers above, do you plan to change anything you are doing as your project continues?
Work is going rather well, we would only wish there was a faster Internet connection at disposal.
Edit-a-thons & Editing competitions
- What lessons were learned that may help others succeed in similar projects, or that may change the way you are doing this project?

- What went well, or is going well?
- Topics were easy to pick and lists were comprehensive, and the articles are, for the most part, well-made and in accordance with the wiki-standards.
- What did not go well, or is not going well?
- The participants so far have been those that are already in close contact with each other, and we are yet to see an interest to participate in edit-a-thons by the wider editorship. We advertised on mk.wiki itself, wanting to attract only existing (and relatively experienced) editors for the edit-a-thons. This may have been due to the topics (both were on sports), or some inertness of the part of the editing community. We have not established the reasons yet. Project goals have been found to be unrealistic and need reducing to manageable ones.
- From your answers above, do you plan to change anything you are doing as your project continues?
- We probably have to diversify the topics, including those that are current and attractive for editors. Some other form of attracting participants seems to be wanting, although we have not had specific ideas yet. We also have to lower the project goals, as it is yet not possible to engage 25 participants per edit-a-thon or to create 50 articles on any one of them.
Education programme
- What lessons were learned that may help others succeed in similar projects, or that may change the way you are doing this project?

- What went well, or is going well?
- We have had very solid work done in Josip Broz - TIto Grammar School, with many students involved and a great number of articles written. The school principal was very satisfied with the results. She invited us to hold a ceremony to award the certificates to the participants, which will also involved food, drink and music.
- The principal asked us if we can continue this programme in future.
- What did not go well, or is not going well?
- The Physics department of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, where we held the lecture, has too few students and hence, writing activities could not be held.
- The unforeseen student protests cut the program short. In spite of this, we are pleased with what has been achieved. Since the turmoils are over, we expect significantly greater numbers of participants and articles in the next grant year.
- From your answers above, do you plan to change anything you are doing as your project continues?
- We intend to engage students from the entire Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in greater, more collective engagements. We are planning to extend our Education programme to several more institutions, as well as enlarging it in present ones.
Wikiexpeditions
- What lessons were learned that may help others succeed in similar projects, or that may change the way you are doing this project?
- What went well, or is going well?
Most of the expeditions went well without any serious problems. Also, we are very happy that we get so much pictures from the forgotten villages and regions in Macedonia. Most of the pictures are with good quality and on this way we enriched Commons with great photographs from places in Macedonia.
- What did not go well, or is not going well?
Had to postpone expeditions, because this expeditions depending of weather conditions and people interested in participation in them. On several occasions we had a problems with local citizens, because they did not allow us to take a pictures from local churches, but with personal talks and explanations we mostly get their permission to take a pictures.
- From your answers above, do you plan to change anything you are doing as your project continues?
Wider outreach and promotion of aspects of the expeditions. Also, I plan for next year to write letters to local authorities to report them that on that weekend Wikipedia visit their town and municipality and if they want we can make a cooperation.

- The implementation of Wiki Loves Earth 2015 in Macedonia had the following goals:
- to increase the number of freely licensed photographs from the natural heritage sites in Macedonia;
- to promote the natural heritage of Macedonia through the photographs uploaded during the competition;
- to improve quality of content on the Wikimedia projects by providing images to the articles;
- to support creation of new articles about natural heritage in Macedonia;
- to encourage active participation of photographs in the competition and simulate the creation of similar projects;
- to create new articles about natural heritage in Macedonia.
- Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 paragraphs.
- All of the goals mentioned above were achieved on various degrees. Some of them were even outachieved. We set out with the goal of at least 3000 uploaded photographs, but achieved a total of 10,282 by the end of the competition. A total of 8,540 of these were accepted and 2,288 rejected. The increased number of freely licenced photographs and the promotion of natural heritage can be evidenced through the uploaded photographs during the competition, the improved quality of content through the use of these photographs in different articles, the creation of new articles through the activity on the Wikimedia projects.
WikiCrafts

- The goal of this project was to document a selection of the traditional crafts and trades of Macedonia that are on the way to being lost and forgotten or are culturally valuable as part of the national identity to photograph the workshops, the craftspersons and the working process, make video recordings of those crafting processes and take video interviews, where the person will tell something of the meaning of their craft/trade, its history and how it was passed on to them.

- Our aim was to document four crafts, but due t the constraints explained above, we managed two so far. We ntend to complete the project as soon as possible, whenever craftsmen are ready to receive us again.
Skopje Zoo

The project was intended introduce QR-codes (incl. QRpedia) for all the species represented in the Skopje Zoo, which would lead to corresponding Wikipedia articles, many of which needed to be especially created.

Yes, it was achieved, as all articles were created, and all QR-code plaques were installed. Both the zoo employees and the public are very satisfied.
Wikimedian-in-Residence at DARM

The role of this person was necessary to address a significant problem we are facing as Wikimedians in Macedonia- the lack digitalised literature and material. It aims to improve and liberate knowledge in society by bringing it out of the dusty bookshelves.
- Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 short paragraphs.
We intended to have a Wikipedian-in-residence at the National Library, but due to negotiation difficulties, we ad placed him in the National Archives (DARM) in stead. In this sense, the modified goal was achieved, as e managed to scan and document a good amount of content.

- Edit-a-thons: The goals projected in the Annual plan for the edit-a-thons have subsequently be found to be unrealsitic, as there is no capacity yet to have 25 editors per edit-a-thon (100 for all 4 were planned) and 50 per edit-a-thon (200 for all 4 were planned). This has to be reduced to a more realistic goals of 20 articles and 10 participants per edit-a-thon.
- Editing competitions: These competitions were meant for users active on the Macedonian Wikipedia with the main goal of improving the quality of the existing articles or creating new articles on specific topics within specified period of time.

- Our goals, as written on the Annual plan page have been to introduce and increase the presence of the Wikimedia projects in the Education institutions, extend the cooperation with them, promote the Wikimedia projects, raise awareness and improve content on wiki by using knowledge and materials available to those institutions.

All of the goals mentioned above were achieved and even outachieved, even this was our first project of this type. We set out with the goal of at least 1000 uploaded photographs, but achieved a total of 1,049 by the end of expeditions. The increased number of freely licensed photographs and writing whole new articles about places and buildings from that pictures can be evidenced through the uploaded photographs during the expeditions and newly created articles, usage of these photographs in different articles.

- As is already the norm with our competitions, we are very satisfied about the project and we seem to have outperformed our goal at least threefold.
WikiCrafts
- The quality of the content was our primary aim, and this was achieved. The content itself will be ready to be shown soon. The number of intended craftspeople we managed to engage in the given period was due both to unforeseen circumstances and the lack of experience
Skopje Zoo
- The project went very well, and will be a valuable aid for people interested in animals. It is also a good permanent promotion of our organisation and the movement.
Wikimedian-in-Residence at DARM
The intention was to have a wider scope of activities, but the archive is very helpful and full of materials we are using to illustrate important topics in our articles.
Edit-a-thons & Editing competitions
The editing competitions are going very well. The edit-a-thons are not doing badly either, considering our capacities.
Education programme
- Project has been very satisfactory so far in the preparatory stages and partly in the writing of articles. The large participation and work starts soon. As it can be seen from above, so far the interest in students has been great and we expect many articles to be created during the following months.

Wikiexpeditions
- This project went very well and has a lot of success, especially when we knew that this project is first of this type which was organize in Macedonia. We can see that a organizing team visited four regions and also made two additional expeditions, one for railway stations along the routes for first and third Wikiexpeditions and one expeditions to Megalithic Observatory Kokino. Also, usage of the uploaded photographs in Wikimedia projects is one half (so far), which is very high percentage.

- The work increased the motivation of contributors through various projects. The competitions inspired active editors to create many articles, while the Educational programme inspired a large number of students to participate in the movement. The photographic competitions inspired amateur photographers to contribute to the projects with their images.
