Google Earth

Isn't it already possible to do what has been suggested here? In Google Earth simply check the Wikipedia layer (under "More") in the lower left.

Or did I misunderstand the idea? And btw. this content might be improved: for example the Wikipedia articles that show at a large zoom-distance could be the ones rated most important (via the vital-ratings or Wikiprojects assessments). Also there could be various ways for filtering and embedding the content of the articles etc.

Yes, actually I think You're right: Google earth does have something that (obviously perfectible) could resemble my idea: the point imho is to develop the idea in an independent platform that could grow as a new Wikipedia's Project; and, above all, that adds to the "Google earth model", let's say so, some other skills, such as the possibility of running through the time and Man's History. This, I think, should be the better news in the matter.

P.S: Please notice that, as I just said to another friend-contributor, I'm not an expert in such matters: I just had the inspiration for the idea, and even my contributions to the Wikipedia project are almost rare, actually. So any suggestions are more than welcome, recalling that the best thing to do at this moment is to advertise the project to as many people as possible, and to develop a great discussion with other Wikimedia members. Items

I think we could divide pages, or I would rather say the "objects" or "items" of the Wikiworld project in three different categories: Places; People; Events. Each of these items (whose shape and structure will be discussed here: therefore every suggestion is appreciated) should be positioned in a particular place in the World map - or more places (perhaps linked by a kind of track) - and in a precise moment of time - or a shorter or longer period of time. Subjects

The program should also be capable of allowing a user to focus the attention of a determined search depending on the main field of interest: if, for example, a user wants to make a search in the archaeological field, all the images (photos of artifacts etc.) events (discoveries, expeditions etc.) people (scholars, theorists, etc.) belonging to the category should have a greater prominence in the geographic area chosen by the user to conduct the research. Time Line

Visually, I personally imagine the Time Line tool of such a program as - intuitively - that same horizontal bar that every Internet user is accustomed to know when opening a window of her/his Internet browser: moving which towards the left or right in a determined geographical area, it should be possible to scroll forward or backward in time: and maybe, to facilitate the search and consultation, it will also be possible to see scrolling and approaching in the left and right of the bar, in chronological order and how through the pages of a book (e.g. in some PDF models), appearing in transparency, and with varying degrees of evidence etc., the images of the "items" in a smaller size ("Preview"), the most remarkable of that particular place and of the subject chosen etc. etc. (which requires a specific work on the categories of any object) Salvebrutta 16:09, 8 June 2016 (UTC)

WikiShootMe

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiShootMe already provides a world map that can display all items with locations. Currently it doesn't register the time dimension well, but that isn't that much extra code. Wikidata provides a strong basis. Wikidata provides the necessary data for a project like this. Wikidata currently doesn't have "Event notability" or item notability but adding a property for that would be possible through the normal Wikidata property creation process. Debating what notability happens to be isn't trivial but doesn't seem like a project to be funded by a grant. ChristianKl (talk) 15:39, 20 September 2016 (UTC)

As posted on the Project Grants startpage, the deadline for submissions this round is September 26, 2017. To submit your proposal, you must (1) complete the proposal entirely, filling in all empty fields, and (2) change the status from "draft" to "proposed." As soon as you’re ready, you should begin to invite any communities affected by your project to provide feedback on your proposal talkpage.
