Two-days dedicated to Wikipedians and Wikimedias to visit exhibitions in Zurich focusing on colonialism, provenance, restitution, power dynamics and global critical perspectives.

The project "Decolonising knowledge in Switzerland" is bringing together Wikipedians, Swiss GLAMs (galleries, libraries, archives and museums) and researchers to enhance open content and open data related to colonisation, provenance, restitution, power dynamics and global critical perspectives. The aim is to improve articles and data on Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects based on a series of exhibitions organised in Switzerland in 2024-2025.

The project supports Wikipedians in accessing information they can use as a reference to amend and integrate entries on Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects and it offers training opportunities to GLAMs and researchers to learn how to prepare data for Wikipedians and edit articles and other data directly.

The initiative is promoted by the Institute of Design at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI), with the support of Wikimedia CH and with the involvement and collaboration of ETH Zurich, Landesmuseum Zurich, Ethnographic Museum - University of Zurich and Museum Rietberg.

Guided tours for Wikipedians will be followed by an edit-a-thon session on-site and online.

  • Free of charge but please register below. Interested Wikipedians are kindly requested to register on the project's website as places are limited. Admission is free upon registration.
  • Lunch:
  • Language: the guided tours are in English.
  • Starting time: please note that activities start on Saturday at 10 am and on Sunday at 11 am.
  • Weather: the maximum temperature experted on Saturday is 2° and on Sunday 4°. We meet inside the institutions :)
  • Contributing to the Wikimedia projects: please contribute in the language you prefer, add images to Wikimedia Commons, improve list of articles to review, check references, start adding content, create Wikidata item for relevant content, learn new perspectives... Please find below more info about content or refer to the Edit-a-thon page.
  • Universal code of conduct and Friendly space policy: we expect all participants to all events to follow the Respectful behavior space policy of Wikimedia CH. Please refer to Iolanda Pensa and Chiara Somajni for any problem.

Guided tour of the exhibition "Colonial Traces - Collections in Context" ETH Zurich: meeting room. Presentation by Agnese Quadri of the list of all exhibits with information about which exhibits are already available as digital copies (with metadata and permanent link) and under which licence they may be used. Free time to edit and discuss.

11 am CET Meeting point: inside the Ethnographic Museum - University of Zurich. Look for a Wikipedia sign. Entry is free of charge for everyone.

Guided tour of the exhibition "Benin Dues. Dealing with Looted Royal Treasures"

12 pm CET Free time to edit, discuss and have lunch. Considering the short time frame and the cold weather, we suggest having lunch inside the railway station and meeting afterwards at the museums.
1 pm CET Free time to edit, discuss and have lunch. Considering the short time frame and the cold weather, we suggest a sandwich in the Cafeteria of the Rietberg museum.
1.45 pm CET Meeting point: inside the Landesmuseum Zurich, near the ticket office. Look for a Wikipedia sign. . We have pass for the free access to the exhibition.

Please register for each event. Participation is free of charge, but for maximum 15 participants. The guided tours are in English.

An image of the exhibition, already uploaded by the ETH team on Wikimedia Commons. Review all the content presented in the exhibition.

The guides tour will start at 10.00 and it will last 45-60 minutes, including questions. Our guide will be Joel Michel. After the tour a room near the exhibition will be available for edits and discussions.

Agnese Quadri has prepared for us a list of all exhibits with information about which exhibits are already available as digital copies (with metadata and permanent link) and under which licence they may be used. The list will be presented after the guided tour.

Please note that we have been informed that

  • we are allowed to take our own photos in the exhibition and upload them on Wikimedia Commons and use them to illustrate content.
  • The exhibition texts may only be used if the authorship (Dr Monique Ligtenberg) is acknowledged. The sources used are indicated in the respective texts.
