Introduction
[edit]Wikimedians of Ruhengeri User Group is a group of Wikimedia Volunteers who aim to contribute to Wikimedia projects in Ruhengeri, Rwanda. The group was established to create awareness and increase the number of participations in Wikimedia movement in the Northern part of Rwanda in focusing on providing training sessions on Wikimedia projects by organizing Editathons, Contests, Photohunts, and Workshops.
Objectives
[edit]- To create and improve the Rwandan contents on all Wikimedia projects
- To provide training on Wikimedia projects
- To create more awareness about the Wikimedia projects in the Northern part of Rwanda.
- To enhances the capacity and visibility of Kinyarwanda Wikis.
- To increase the number of participants in the Wikimedia movement.
Activities
[edit]- Organizing edit-a-thons, contests and events for Wiki projects.
- Contributing on Wikipedia and other sister projects.
- Translation of contributions from other languages to Kinyarwanda Wikis.
- Training the Ruhengeri community and other neighboring communities on how to contribute on Wikimedia projects.

History
[edit]Based on Wikimedia survey named Conducting a detailed needs assessment of communities in the Africa Great Lakes Region conducted from 15th March to 15th August 2022, which research findings showed that there are huge gap of awareness and lack of representation from suburb and rural areas about Wikimedia movement in Africa great lakes region. Uwayezu Protais, a Wikimedian who was a member of data numerating team during research, gave a commitment in thinning gap and increasing representation from suburb and rural areas by sharing the knowledge he has with the people in and near Ruhengeri in the Northern part of Rwanda. In October 2022, He met with Nkurunziza Fabrice and Muyishimire Nicole who assisted a lot in conducting first trainings on 4th March 2023. Since then Wikimedia community in Ruhengeri started and is contributing to a world where open knowledge is accessible, inclusive, and used to benefit all.
