How to participate as a translator

Wikipedia Content Translation tool video tutorial

You can participate as a translator without any previous Wikipedia editing experience! Just follow these simple steps:

1. Create a Wikipedia account and enable the Content Translation extension

[edit]

First, you need to create a Wikipedia account from a desktop computer by clicking on the button in the top right corner (choose any username you like) and then enabling the Content Translation extension. We also recommend enabling the email functionality.

2. Add your name to list of participants

[edit]

Next, please add your username by clicking on 'Edit' above and adding your username to the "Interested Wikipedians and translators" list at the bottom of the page. Don't worry, you can't break anything – any edit on a wiki page can be undone.

3. Choose an article that is still missing in your language

[edit]

Now, let's choose an article to translate into your language. Below is a list of articles in English that are 'ready' to be translated into your language. We will continue adding new articles to this list.

The list below shows in which languages these articles already exist. It's not meant to be a list of languages where they are needed, in fact they might be even more needed (and probably missing) in other languages.

Attention:

  • The task is to only translate the introduction (the part above the table of contents)!
  • Before you start, make sure that the article doesn't already exist in your language!

4. Translate away!

[edit]

As Wikipedians say: 'Be Bold'! You can't break anything. Full documentation of the Content Translation feature is available here.

5. Let us know once you're done

[edit]

Once you're done, let us know by adding the name of the article and your language here:

How to participate as a Wikipedian

[edit]
Participate as a Wikipedian!

As a Wikipedian, you can participate in the following ways:

  • translate (see above)
  • review translations listed in the 'let us know once you're done' section above
  • help offer Wikipedia training to translators by adding your contact details to the 'need help' section above
  • approach small Wikipedia communities and invite them to participate as well
  • improve the lead sections (the introduction) of any of the following articles and add them to the 'choose an article that is still missing in your language' section above so that the lead section is a (1) readable (for an international audience), (2) up-to-date, (3) well-referenced, and (4) complete (from an international perspective) summary of the article.

Lead needs improvement
