Reaching diversity through technology

[edit]

Diverse users use the Wikimedia technical infrastructure and tools. Having different requirements and needs, contributors from all over the world need tools that serve them well in their work for the Wikimedia projects. People from all over the world should be able to access and use the content of the Wikimedia projects.

What hinders/helps diversity from a technology/users’ viewpoint? How can we bring multiple perspectives, experiences with workflows and local expertise into the Wikimedia software development? What do we gain from taking multiple perspectives into account? How can we best work together and what makes collaboration fun?

Zack and Birgit will give a short introduction and present some examples, main challenges and good practices.

We then would love to invite everyone to join the discussion and develop ideas together with us. Technical knowledge is not required :-)

About the facilitators

Zack edits Wikipedia Arabic. He worked with users from Hebrew, Somali and Urdu Wikipedias on templates and gadgets. He is a translator by profession and a coder. Birgit is working in Software Development. She is mainly focusing on developing collaborative approaches such as the Technical Wishlist, an approach to identify and prioritize technical needs from diverse users.

They both believe multiple perspectives to be a core value not only in software development but in the overall Wikimedia movement.
