Abstract:

Wikimedia Europe is an international association of 27 European affiliates. It was created in 2022 on the basis of FKAG EU. Its role is to further the Wikimedia Movement's interests in Brussels, the heart of the European Union. It also helps its members in public policy and advocacy in their home countries, making sure that our message stays unified by cooperating with national public policy staff. It will soon begin fundraising operations.

I would like to introduce WMEU's operations to non-members. I will also share ways we can cooperate and how you can ask us for help. (Can be combined for a longer session with Wikimedia CEE Meeting 2024/Submissions/How to influence national policy?

How will this session be beneficial for the communities in the region of CEE?

Central and Eastern Europe has not historically engaged in public policy efforts on a bigger scale. Unfortunately, we are now at a point when this activity will become more and more important every passing year. Fortunately, Wikimedia Europe was created exactly for that. We are here to help smaller affiliates and communities develop their own capacity by sharing the lessons learned, creating a unified strategy, and directly devoting capacity to certain problems. I hope that after this session more affiliates and volunteers will be familiar with the importance of public policy work and where they can ask for help with it.
