The Wikimedia Usergroup Nigeria – Akwa Ibom Network is a branch of Wikimedia Usergroup Nigeria, dedicated to advancing Wikimedia projects and initiatives aligned with the Wikimedia Nigeria movement, as well as improving access to knowledge within Akwa Ibom State. It was established on October 26, 2024.

Our mission and focus
[edit]The network will focus on raising awareness about Wikimedia projects in Akwa Ibom State by involving local communities. Through workshops, training, and events, it aims to help volunteers learn how to contribute to platforms like Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, wikisource, etc. This will create more opportunities for people in the state to share knowledge, preserve cultural heritage, and contribute to the global Wikimedia movement. The network will rely on collaboration and coordination with Wikimedia User Group Nigeria to achieve its goals.
Objectives
[edit]- To promote Wikimedia projects in Akwa Ibom State.
- To train volunteers on how to contribute to Wikimedia projects
- To organize physical meetups for Wikimedians within Akwa Ibom State.
Proposed Activities
[edit]- Organizing Edit-a-thons for Wikipedia Wikidata, Wikivoyage and Wikisource in Akwa Ibom State.
- Promote editing of Nigeria-related content on Wikimedia projects.

- Wiki Loves Campaigns: When you hear Wiki Loves, you might wonder what it means, if you're new to our community.
The Wiki Loves Campaigns are global photography and contests organized by the Wikimedia community to document and promote free knowledge. They focus on themes like nature, monuments, folklore, etc. encouraging people to upload photos and media to Wikimedia Commons
Examples of the wiki Loves Campaigns include Wiki Loves Earth (nature and protected areas), Wiki Loves Monuments (cultural heritage sites), Wiki Loves Africa (traditions, cuisines, festivals In Africa) and Wiki Loves Folklore (traditions and festivals)
These campaigns help preserve history, culture, and nature while making information freely accessible to everyone. Anyone can participate by taking photos and uploading them to Wikimedia Commons. You can win prizes both at the International, national and State level.

Languages
[edit]The Wikimedia Akwa Ibom State community focuses on English, Ibibio, Annang, and Oron-speaking groups. Volunteers can communicate in these and other Nigerian languages. Most of the outreach and learning materials are in English, but they are working on creating materials in Ibibio as well.
