Wikimania 2005:Competitions

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

At Wikimania, the final judging and award presentation for a whole mess of competitions will be held. You do not have to be present to receive an award; although there is a special category for entries created while at or en route to the conference.

Both writing competitions and media competitions will be held, for content created in the past year.

General rules

All submissions:

  • can be entered for one category only.
  • must be your own work (collaboration is encouraged, however!)
  • must be licensed under the GFDL or CC-by-SA (multilicensing including one of these is fine), or released into the public domain.
  • must be fully copyright compliant (e.g., there should be no copyright concerns about the subject of any media or text)
  • should be suitable for use on one or more Wikimedia projects (if media content, should be suitable for more than just the Commons) - ideally demonstrated by being in use on a main-namespace page on such a project.

Deadlines:
The closing date for entries for content created before the conference is 3rd August 2005. Content must have been created and uploaded to a Wikimedia project by the end of August 3, in some time zone, and added to the nominations list before 23:59 UTC, August 4. Entries for content created en route to or at the conference must be nominated by 23:59 UTC, August 6th.

Judging

Judging criteria: Each judge will specify his or her criteria in some detail; however, there are some general criteria which apply to all contests. Important aspects of submissions will be:

  • Encyclopedic or educational value
  • Quality and style of the work
  • Collaborative effort

Judges to be announced. There will be a panel of judges for writing, and another one for media, including Sj and Bdk, respectively. If you know someone you think would make a good and impartial judge, or are interested in judging yourself, please add names here. There will be an initial round of judging to select finalists, by Friday; the finalists will be showcased at Wikimania. Finalists and submissions created on the way to Wikimania, will be judged during the conference, and awards will be handed out on Sunday at an awards ceremony.

Writing competition

There will be categories for:

  1. Articles - History & Biography
  2. Articles - Natural science & Technology
  3. Articles - Humanities, Social science, Art & Culture
  4. Articles - Current Events, Pop Culture, & Miscellany
  5. News (both summary and original reporting)
  6. Primary source material (preferably not formerly available online)
  7. Book modules & collections
  8. Quote & dictionary collections
  9. Wikimania - content written at or on the way to Wikimania...

There will also be special awards for the best stub, the most unusual subject, the most poetic use of wiki...

Rules:
Texts should be no more than 100,000 characters in length; or a representative sample less than that length should be submitted in lieu of the entire work.

Don't hesitate to submit your work!

Media competition

There will be categories for audio, video, and four categories for photography: "nature", "people", "places" and "objects". There will also be three extra categories (one for each of photography, audio and video) for media created at, or on the way to, the conference.

Rules:
Submissions should be uploaded to commons and listed at the gallery page on Wikimania Media Competition. They may be digitally manipulated to improve any aspect, but should remain a true and accurate representation of the subject.

Consideration will be given to the choice of subject, with unusual or difficult to obtain subjects being given extra marks, but the quality of the submission will be the primary consideration.

Submissions should be no larger than 20MB in size.

Categories:

  1. Sketches & Artwork: This includes all manner of sketches, hand-drawn or -painted illustrations.
  2. Photography - Nature: A specific insect, plant, animal etc. or a more general image of natural phenomena. Subjects must be accurately identified in order to make them fully suitable for the projects (i.e. "insect" is not sufficient, which species is it?)
  3. Photography - People: This can be a specific person mentioned on the projects, or a more general illustration of a person (for example doing a particular job or of a particular nationality).
  4. Photography - Places: This includes landmarks from particular places as well as more general images.
  5. Photography - Objects: A catch-all category. Might include an illustration of a recipe for Wikibooks, a household item for an article on Wikipedia, and so on.
  6. Audio: Entries in this category should be recordings of music, speech, sounds of nature, or other audio content. For information on and help with audio formats, see m:Sound and en:Wikipedia:Sound.
  7. Animation: Entries in this category should be animated gifs or shorts, or edited video of drawings, puppets, clay, etc.
  8. Video: Entries in this category should be video clips, edited shorts, or other true-to-life video content. For information on and help with video formats, see m:Video
  9. Wikimania: Media for this category should be created at, or on the way to, Wikimania. Facilities for uploading and processing, and for printing images, will be provided (I hope). There will be separate prizes for each of photography, audio and video in this category.

There will also be special awards for the most inexplicable and the most aesthetically pleasing submissions.

File types

  • Photos should be submitted as .jpg files and be suitable for printing at 20 X 30cm
  • Audio should be submitted as .ogg files
  • Video should be submitted as .ogg (theora) files. If you have difficult producing theora files, you can also submit non-free formats such as .mpeg, and we will convert them for you.

Contact NullC or Sj with conversion requests.

Awards

Awards will include gear from Wikipedia and Xiph.org, and O'Reilly books (German and English).
