Wiki Loves Women SheSaid Hausa Phase II
The Wiki Loves Women/SheSaid Hausa Phase II is an initiative aimed at amplifying the voices and contributions of women through Wikimedia projects, particularly Wikiquote. In collaboration with women's organizations and local groups, this project will focus on adding quotations from notable women across various fields—science, politics, art, literature, and socio-economic development—highlighting their impact on history and society. The project is an extension of the global #SheSaid campaign, a significant movement for bridging the gender gap on Wikimedia platforms.
Why this project
[edit]Women continue to be underrepresented on Wikimedia projects, both in terms of participation and content. The #SheSaid campaign is designed to counter this imbalance by increasing visibility for women’s contributions. Through this project, we aim to address the lack of representation of African women in historical and modern narratives on Wikiquote, particularly within the Hausa-speaking communities. Our project focuses on sourcing and documenting quotes from notable women in Northern Nigeria, thus contributing to preserving their achievements for future generations.
Objectives
[edit]- Increase women’s participation in Wikimedia projects, particularly in Northern Nigeria.
- Document notable quotations from women in politics, science, literature, art, and socio-economy on Hausa Wikiquote.
- Create awareness around the **Wiki Loves Women** movement through social media amplification.
- Encourage more women to join and contribute to Wikimedia projects as editors.
- Collaborate with local women’s organizations to foster community engagement.
Planned activities
[edit]The project will involve a mix of online and offline activities, designed to maximize engagement and build a sustainable community of female editors and contributors. Key activities include:
1. Online Campaigns
- Social Media Flyers: We will design and distribute flyers featuring notable quotes from women on Instagram, Telegram, and Facebook.
- Online Trainings: We will conduct virtual office hours and tutorials on how to participate in the #SheSaid campaign and edit Wikiquote, specifically the Hausa Wikiquote.
2. Offline/In-person Events
- Workshops and Trainings: Three-day in-person workshops will focus on: Introduction to the Wiki Loves Women #SheSaid campaign.
- The history, policies, and significance of Wikimedia projects.
- Step-by-step guidance on contributing to Wikiquote and editing quotes from notable women.
- Focus on the Hausa Wikiquote and adding region-specific content.
3. Edit-a-thon and Contest
- Wikiquote Edit-a-thon: A dedicated edit-a-thon to inspire and motivate participants to contribute significantly to Hausa Wikiquote by adding quotes from women.
- Contest: A friendly competition to recognize top contributors and encourage continuous engagement.
Audience
[edit]Our target participants include women’s organizations such as:
- National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ),
- Northern Women Association (Matan Arewa),
- Women in Politics, and more.
The project will also extend invitations to new organizations, engaging women from diverse backgrounds to join and contribute to the Wikiquote project. Follow-up engagement will be conducted through post-event check-ins, mentorship programs, and continuous training sessions.
