Community and Team

The first Mumbai Meetup in recent times was in September 2010. The community has come a long way from there. In October 2010 it hosted a talk by Wikipedia Founder Jimmy Wales. On 15 January 2011, one of the biggest Indian Wikipedia X celebrations was held in Mumbai, which was attended by Barry Newstead, Global Development Officer at the Wikimedia Foundation. The first Wikipedia Takes Mumbai (Photowalk) was held as part of the Wikipedia X celebrations in January 2011.
WikiProject GLAM was kicked off in Mumbai by visiting Liam Wyatt, who was Wikipedian in resident at the British Museum in London in 2009. The local community took the lead on this and the first ever GLAM event in Asia was held in Mumbai in June 2011 (GLAM Creative Commons Workshop by Shishir Jha, Project lead, Creative Commons India). WikiConference India was first thought of by the Mumbai Community in March 2011. In the April 2011 meetup, Mumbai resolved to take the initiative and invite communities from all over India to Mumbai for the first ever national level Wiki-event in the country.
The Indian Chapter of the Wikimedia Foundation was registered in January 2011 after 2 years of effort. WikiConference India is being held under the chapter banner and will be the first big Chapter event in India. Currently, the Wikimedia India chapter is constituted by its Executive Committee. and you can get in touch with them by email. Use the form, Luke, to become a member of the Chapter.

The Team
[edit]The conference preparations are being led by members of the Mumbai WikiCommunity on the ground and is headed by members of the Mumbai WikiCommunity, who are playing a major part in various teams as well. Also part of various teams are members of the larger India WikiCommunity who have rugged it out for a few years and now share their experience in giving the hosts a welcome helping hand in this first national Wiki-initiative in the country. Four people in well regarded positions within Wikimedia have graciously agreed to join the team in advisory capacity.
The committee features people of varying backgrounds, including professionals, students, individuals well connected with various institutions, attendees of past Wikimania's, and longtime Wikipedians.
