WikiAdvocates/Programs/HatchAWiki Project

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Overview

[edit]

At present, there are pending Wikimedia projects in the Philippines that are waiting to be approved by the Language Committee. There are existing requests on Meta and localization requirements were also almost completed. The lack of active editors and test wiki activity are what hinder from these projects to be fully developed. The aim of the Hatch A Wiki Project is to develop and maintain an active project, complete and proofread the MediaWiki interface translations, and complete the specific settings for the test project. At the moment, the team is working on Central Bikol Wikiquote (Wikisambit), Tagalog Wikiquote (Wikikawikaan), and for the next few months, Tagalog Wikivoyage (Wikibyahe) and Tagalog Wikisource.

Wikiprojects

[edit]

The Wiki Advocates Philippines volunteers were able to hatch three Philippine language based wikiprojects through a series of Hatch-A-Wiki Project. The very first project was the Central Bikol Wiktionary. Recently, Wikisambit and Wikikawikaan, the Wikiquote for Central Bikol and Tagalog, was approved. As of January 2024, the team are working on improving the hatched wikis and started to develop a new language edition of Wiktionary -- Rinconada Wiktionary.

History

[edit]
Bikol Wiktionary Edit-a-thon 2.0

Hatch A Wiki Project was a term coined by the first developers of the Central Bikol Wiktionary, although developing incubator projects were already the group's objective even before the name itself. It started on November 16, 2019, during the Bikol Wiktionary Trainer's Training and Edit-a-thons, wherein the proponent's(Imelda Brazal) goal is to train editors on how to use the templates for Bikol Wiktionary to add more entries to the Bikol Wiktionary and make it up and running for the Bikol Community, and to promote the Bikol Sentral Wiktionary for prospective users and Central Bikol speakers. Overall, it was able to run six meetings, invited 22 editors, and created 979-word entries. However, the incubator project was not hatched at the end of the program. The second project conducted to develop the specific incubator project was the Bikol Wiktionary Edit-a-thon. During its period, the entries reached 1800 words, 16 old and new editors participated, and it was finally hatched on January 12, 2021. After 13 years of its incubator status, it has become an official Central Bikol Wikiproject. After the success, the team agreed to work on other incubator projects; thus, the Hatch-A-Wiki-Project was initiated on June 1, 2021, under a rapid grant request from MaroBos.

The Central Bikol Wikiquote in incubator was requested by Kunokuno, co-founder of Wiki Advocates Philippines last December 21, 2020 and was verified by the Language Committee on March 1, 2021. It was then supported by 10 community members and editors; Exec8 , Sherlock808, Dang Brazal , JudgeVP , MaroBos , Daramlagon , Jheckpesino, Even Barrameda, GoldenLeaf21, Daniel Barrameda, and Sheanjean.
On April 6, 2021, another request for an incubator project was applied, the Tagalog Wikiquote. This was proposed by the project lead of Hatch-a-Wiki 2021, Marobos who is also a member of Wiki Advocates Philippines. This was verified as eligible by the Language Committee on May 21, 2021. Eleven community members and editors have supported the proposal; Kunokuno , Exec8, Elvilubi , Sherlock808, Unknown Wiki Robot , Jheckpesino , Sheanjean , GoldenLeaf21 , Daniel Barrameda, Daphpb, and 🍕 Yivan000 viewtalk.

Both projects were requested for approval on July 4, 2022 after it has been active since December 2020. To date, there were between 3 and 10 editors for 14 straight months, and there were 1542 pages including templates, for Central Bikol Wikiquote. Tagalog Wikiquote has also been active since December 2020, and 1978 pages were created including templates. On August 28, 2022, the Wikisambit was tagged as an approved project by the Language Committee. The Wikikawikaan was approved on the following month, September 6, 2022 after 13 years in incubator status.
