Requests for new languages/Wiktionary Rinconada Bikol

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
submitted verification final decision
Discuss the creation of this language project on this page. Votes will be ignored when judging the proposal. Please provide arguments or reasons and be prepared to defend them (see the Language proposal policy).

The language committee needs to verify the language is eligible to be approved.

  • Check that the project does not already exist (see list).
  • Obtain an ISO 639 code
  • Ensure the requested language is sufficiently unique that it could not exist on a more general wiki.
  • Ensure that there are a sufficient number of native editors of that language to merit an edition in that language.
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code bto (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Rinconada Bikol Language name in English
Language name Rinconada Bikol Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...
Language Wikidata item Q12633026 - item has currently the following values: Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed.
Directionality LTR Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)?
Links Links to previous requests, or references to external websites or documents.

Settings
Project name Wiksyunaryo "Wiktionary" in your language
Project namespace usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace "Wiktionary talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads no Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone Asia/Manila "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Anything else that should be set
Once settings are finalized, a committee member will submit a Phabricator task requesting creation of the wiki. (This will include everything automatically, except the additional namespaces/settings.) After the task is created, it should be linked to in a comment under "final decision" above.

Proposal

[edit]

Rinconada Bikol is one of the spoken languages in Camarines Sur, Philippines, mostly around the 5th district of Rinconada. It is grouped under the Inland Bikol branch of the Bikol macrolanguage. This is also a language adopted by some of the Agta/Aeta, a group of indigenous people situated in the mountainous areas of Mount Iriga/Asog. It has 2 main dialects: Sinabukid and Sinaranew. In total, it has over 200,000 to 500,000 speakers worldwide. --Kunokuno (talk) 05:56, 3 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion

[edit]

This request is in behalf of new editors from the Rinconada Bicol population. This will be under the Hatch-A-Wiki program of the Wiki Advocates PH and local contributors for Bikol Languages of Marayum Dictionary. Kunokuno (talk) 05:56, 3 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

No test project yet? --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 09:19, 3 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
We'll be starting the main page by this week. I'm just waiting for a couple of translations from Rinconada Bikol speakers. Kunokuno (talk) 15:40, 3 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, we already created the main page for this project. Some templates are still on the process of getting completed. Meanwhile, my fellow editor Rvat2003 will take charge of adding entries, proofreading entries, and inviting new editors who are native speakers of the language. We hope to develop this in a span of 6-9 months. Kunokuno (talk) 15:26, 15 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • The creation of a wiktionary page for Rinconada Bikol is important because it currently has no extensive dictionaries or wordlists available to the public. Even the existence of dictionaries is not known. Although there have been multiple attempts of creating them, they have so far not been able to be completed and shared.
  • As we all know, a dictionary has a very important role in recording and preserving a language. Not just that, but for the sake of the language itself.
  • According to Ethnologue, the language enjoys vigorous use with a category of 6b. However, with the influence of Filipino and English within the school system and media, some children's first language is now Tagalog or even English. That's because parents who know either language now try to use these languages with their children instead of Rinconada Bikol. -- Rvat2003 (talk) 06:38, 15 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
