== your three values ==
=== 1 ===
Responsibility - our obligation to be good partners in our mission, to properly use our resources, to respect our commitments, to make them thoughtfully and in mind of the vast network of collaborators who join us on this journey.
Cooperation - to put aside ego where necessary and create a playing field where all are welcome, where good ideas are listened to and good work is appreciated, where compromises are made to build to better outcomes.
Openness/Learning/Maturation - I struggled with how to express this one. This is being open to learning, growing, maturing - striving to always improve.
Responsibility - believe in meeting commitments and doing what you say you will do. Enabling others to succeed in meeting your part. Being mindful of resources. Using them wisely. There is a certain degree of humility that comes backed in. Especially when considering resources. Their time and money. Respecting the resources - time and money.
An element of stewardship and service. We are a service organization. I need to be clear that service means that we give them what they need to fulfill their roles and sometimes that is leadership. Requires being sensitive to their needs. Sometimes we lead from the back and sometimes from the front. The service is empowerment.
Cooperation - I see us as part of a big network of people around the world. That network is our goal. Not be the leaders, ultimately, but be a part of that larger network. We need to listen. We need to share honestly. What I like about crowdsourcing our projects. In some ways we overcome individual imperfections through the masses. By bringing in people to share work we can each help achieve perfection. We’re stronger together. An open community of givers and receivers. Central to my vision of cooperation. Open room for them to bring to the table and join you. We need to understand what they require of us so we can provide it. We need to be inviting. The best contributor is one who shares back. I realize that won’t work for everyone. Our ecosystem thrives when people contribute.
Committing to continual improvement. I thought about growth, because growth implies getting bigger. Embetterment. Continually getting better. Constant improvement. Becoming more than. Not in terms of more number of people. Need to be able to learn and make changes. Openness - you have to be able to perceive your errors and when the world has changed. Current. Must keep current. Openness is recognizing the evolution of our environment and making adjustments. You have to conscious about and thinking about it. You can’t do the jellyfish thing, floating around. You have to be a seeker. Curiosity is part of it.
== why are those good things? do they enable other good things? are they intrinsically good? ==
Talking about “to know” that it is almost sacred. We should be one of the modern wonders of the world. The drive to accumulate and share knowledge is one of the noblest we have. Our mission is not just to enable to consume, but to enable to contribute and to teach. A chance to be part of something, that’s what we’re offering. Transparency is pulling the veil of the secret back room of knowledge and allowing everyone in.
People count on me and I must deliver. Responsibility. I think the third one is where we should focus. Learning. It encapsulates the other two. Improvement means taking responsibility. And cooperating. It’s kind of a super value. Openness, learning, maturation, I don’t know what to call it. Why? Would it be a given that we are not doing it right. They only way we can get close is to keep trying. Because we need to do it right. This is something so huge and important. We must do it as well as we can. We need every person to care what we are doing because what we are doing matters. The only way to reach our goal is to keep pushing. Knowing that we are not doing it right. But we have an obligation to notice that and figure it out. Care. We are paid by people who look at our mission and say yes, this is a good thing. We have an obligation to deliver to them and make this mission real. Humility underlies them all. I recognize my own deep flaws and the foundations. If we ever tell ourselves we’re doing it right, we should step back and reassess. Until we’ve reached the end goal, clearly we are not doing it right. What could we be doing better? What could we be doing more?
Continual improvement for it’s own sake is not exactly it. It’s a means to another end. It’s so we can do this thing. Which circles back to responsibility. Why are we going there? People deserve it and need it. We have struggled with ignorance for the entire human history. The vast majority of human history. We kid ourselves if we think we’ve overcome that. The world is hurt by ignorance. Ignorance is not bliss. It is not a state of safety. It is an existence that allows humans to shirk. We need to do something that is better than what we have now. To be able to leave the world a better place.
We have a responsibility to eliminate ignorance. The internet has enabled me to see what people are saying. Access to information is huge in terms of allowing us to take power. If there were more information we might not need to take power. If they had access to true and honest information they might not be Trump supporters.
There is an obligation of continual improvement. Obligation of sharing back. Knowledge isn’t complete if it is coming from one source. The winners writing the history books. Colonial education has serious problems. Sharing back empowers people to feel part of the knowledge dialogue and the best way to learn it is to share it. Wikinews is a great source because they can share folk knowledge in meaningful ways because they can share original sources. Actively pushing forward a new and better existence. We have a responsibility to share back. Historically is the way humanity has conveyed knowledge is person to person. Crowdsourcing helps deal with bias and weaknesses. If we share it in a common pool, we get truth. We see common threads and it helps us to determine “what happened” objectively.
The diversity is part of it. I spent a fair bit of time combating systemic bias. Diversity is important in the ecosystem pool. Genetic deterioration in the ecosystem if they are homogenous. It’s vital to our healthy survival. The species needs it to grow in a positive -way. We can go the other way, but I don’t think we should. Diversity is critical to healthy survival. There are parameters: I believe in the scientific method. Just the fact that enough people tell a story does not make it true.
To me part of the dialogue of folk narrative needs to include recognizing scientific advancement and objective truth. We’re not here to encourage myth making, we’re here to help people identify truth. That means giving them the tools to recognize what is speculative and what is objective truth. Truth is super important to me. It’s got to be a central value for me. Truth, getting at it. Giving it to other people.
I think that the foundation is not as focused on truth as I am, it’s more focused on helping others create truth. “Empower and engage” others. It is our job to help people do it. The work is to empower people. Bring people into the conversation.
Our role is to bring people together and help pull them out. Our job is not to define it. It’s to engage me to find out what I think and put it into a common pool of shared understanding.
Pulling out what people have to offer. We have a goal. A vision. We are looking to inspire and facilitate and support. So as to empower and engage them to reach that vision and that vision is truth.
